Dear everyone, We are saved! We are saved! We are saved! We are free. We are free. We are not going to die! We are not going to die. We are not going to die. What is open space? What is the sun? What is grass? What is dirt? What is wind? How come we can run aound? ~Chickens

Dear friends, Pleas support groups like this. If anything, share this information as much as you can so awareness is created so sufferings can be less.

Thousands of Californian hens have escaped being gassed after an anonymous donor provided $50,000 for some of them to be flown across the US on a charter flight to a happy retirement on the east coast.

The hens, who have reached the end of their egg-laying life, were due to be killed – a common practice in the US.

But after an approach from the Animal Place sanctuary in northern California, 3,000 of them will enjoy a comfortable retirement instead. Thanks to an unnamed benefactor, 1,150 of them will be flown to New York to be distributed to sanctuaries in the eastern US.

“It’s certainly the first time this many adult birds have been flown across the country,” said Marji Beach, education director at Animal Place.

Commercial airlines would not accept the 1,150-chicken load, which is why the group had to turn to a private jet company. Beach said the jet company did not seem shocked by the request.

Animal Place has saved 12,000 birds since it started in late 2010, the largest rescue operation it has saved 4,460 hens.

“If you met a chicken, they have unique personalities like dogs and cats and we think they deserve the same amount of compassion and respect that we give to dogs and cats – I promise we’re not crazy,” said Beach.

“They have not walked around, they’ve been in cages, they’ve never seen the sky before so it’s going to be quite an adjustment for them, hopefully they will adapt and be happy,” said Davies.

Please support all the animal sanctuaries, without support animals cannot be saved. It’s down to all of us to help. (s)

This is such rejoicing news for the 3,000 hens where change their destiny. It’s sad to know that the hen has been kept in confined space for their eggs and when they are old they will kill them. That is their life. The person who donated $50,000 has changed their lives and give the hen a great place for their remaining time. Such a big heart and generous person that does not see the hen as just an animal but a beings just like us deserve to live our life. May more people show their care, love, and respect to the animals to save their lives from cruelty and irresponsible act.

Wow …..rejoice to that an anonymous donor who had donated $50,000 just to save those chicken to be slaughtered. Thousands of Californian hens which supposed to be ready to the slaughtered house by chartered flight was safe and set free to a happy retirement on the east coast called the Animal Place sanctuary. That’s wonderful. Animal Place has saved many thousand birds since it commenced .
Thank you Rinpoche for this sharing to create the awareness to enable to safe as many as possible and less sufferings.

  3. Lin Mun on Apr 15, 2018 at 9:52 pm

I thank the donors for being so generous to donate USD 50,000 to rescue the chickens from being killed. He/She is very compassion and his/her action is very inspiring. Chicken is just like any other living beings but human will treat them like an item to generate products and profit. And then when their existence are no longer valuable we will just kill them. May more people who read this article will avoid animal killing and stop eating meat.

  4. Edward Ooi on Jan 11, 2015 at 10:38 pm

This is so good how these chickens can escape death and get the life they were entitled to when they were born! It is very sad to say but there are many more chicken that are being slaughtered every day and in the most painful ways in the millions just to please out taste buds. See how selfish we humans are? Killing to make a short taste in our mouths? Horrible

Also the poor animals ( not just chickens ) barely see daylight before they die instead they are drugged to have more meat, crammed into a cage with at least 15 more and kept in the worst conditions and even the workers abuse the animals for fun sometimes. The key to relieving this is awareness. Spread how animals are being slaughtered and reduce the numbers until eventually they are at 0.

  5. Lucas Roth on May 6, 2014 at 11:10 pm

All animals deserve a proper life, all lives deserve proper lives. Humans are so cruel and they think they are the best of all but they need to remember that we are not alone on this world. Who know maybe one day UFOs or something may come around to visit earth and they may think wow what a cruel disgusting place. Thank you for sharing Rinpoche.

  6. Wan Wai Meng on Sep 26, 2013 at 11:43 am

Save animals, without our support many more animals will die. We all can create the karma for animals to be saved.

  7. HelenaC on Sep 25, 2013 at 3:55 pm

Wow…this is a very heartwarming news indeed…! Will spread this beautiful news around and thank you for sharing Rinpoche.

  8. Nancy ng on Sep 24, 2013 at 6:15 pm

If those chicken could speak the account of their suffering would be too much for us to bear. But they could not. And they do not deserve to sufferjust because they could not speak. They ‘ want the same things as we do..no suffering: Be a vegetarian

  9. nicholas on Sep 20, 2013 at 11:23 pm

Nothing much more happy than knowing more lives save from being killed. How can we enjoy our desire by letting others suffered. We just can’t accept it if it happen the other way round. It make sense. If we don’t want to be hurt same to the animals. The have feelings too, what worst is that they cannot tell and express so why we add on to their suffering.
Thank you very much for saving the chickens. Hope more and more people realize that every beings deserve to live and deserve to be love.

    Dear Rinpoche,

Yea!!! This is really great news!!! I really must thank the anonymous donor for being so kind to spend the money on saving the old hens from death and liberating them somewhere in the east coast.

It is really great news to know and i hope there will be more and more people who will chip in money for the happy retirement place for the hens that once produced the eggs that we eat.

Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this great news!

    Love
    Jutika

This is definitely something unusual…. Saving hens from being killed and flying them by private jet across the country to retire!! I am astounded by the effort Animal Place sanctuary has made and the kind donor who made this project possible. Such compassion they have! Thank you Rinpoche for sharing the article. This compassion act of people at the other side of the world teaches us that we too, if not the same can do more to help the unfortunate animals in our region.

  12. June Tang(KHJB) on Sep 16, 2013 at 7:57 pm

Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this great post to create awareness.Thank you very much for this compassion peoples to save these animals because they really deserve to live!! May more and more people follow this good action.

  13. Low Khjb on Sep 15, 2013 at 10:22 pm

Thank you for the sharing Rinpoche.I am glad to know that are those who still care for those defenseless creatures .Who had out served their productive years to help to supply to the food chain to us humans. It was a noble gesture to save those hens.
They really walk the talk when they charted a flight to make sure those hens arrived safely at their destination, cost was not at all an issue.
For those who committed to this rescue be blessed with outer and inner wealth as their determination showed sincerity, generosity and compassion at the highest level.

  14. wansan on Sep 15, 2013 at 7:36 pm

Wow! Thank you so much to the anonymous donor! I have definitely not heard of chickens being transported to another state by airplane. These hens deserve more than they were treated before that. Many people think chicken as another meat product but they never realised chickens are like other animals such as the dogs and the birds…. Now that they are in their comfortable place providing eggs for us humans, it’s definitely a relieve.

  15. Darren Kechara on Sep 15, 2013 at 11:06 am

Great news! May the anonymous donor will be blessed for his compassionate action. At least the chickens can retire in peace after being used for egg breeding machine…

  16. Cliff on Sep 15, 2013 at 4:06 am

I’ve never heard of 1150 chickens being shipped to another state by a private jet before haha, the person who had sponsored for their transportation and retirement has such a huge heart spending that amount of money for the chicken/hens well being. Its wonderful to hear when people would go so far for animals. Thank you for sharing this article Rinpoche it was pleasant to read.

  17. mitra on Sep 13, 2013 at 11:19 pm

I am happy that people now realise that chickens .great news.

  18. chandra shakya on Sep 11, 2013 at 4:30 pm

For me, it is the first chance to know about such act of benevolence by humans shown towards aging hens. I could feel a sense of happiness inside me thinking that there are good people in the World and their good efforts will keep on prevailing over the bad deeds of other human beings.
Thanks for this information and accept my obeisance, Respected Tsem Rinpoche.

  19. Edern Tan on Sep 11, 2013 at 4:17 pm

Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this article. this practice of letting hens out of their cages and have their freedom back should be done in other types of farms including other animal farms.

Fantastic act of compassion for fellow sentient beings , hope more people would do the same

  21. tenzin llhamo on Sep 10, 2013 at 8:20 pm

Such a wonderful cause!! How kind of them to treat the chickens well. Not only saving their lives but a place for them to roam freely until the end of their life. Thats the way it should be for all animals. Not just caged up and tortured and murdered just to satisfy our taste buds…

  22. Jack Harness on Sep 10, 2013 at 3:20 pm

Thank you Rinpoche for this fabulous news! How rare that such an organisation exists and importantly 3,000 lives were saved.

It is frightening to comprehend facts and figures when one delves into the disparity of what is killed and consumed in our society without regard for life or environment blows my mind and breaks my heart.

In Australia where I happen to live 20 million (est for 2012) chickens are killed every week to satiate demand. Nearly a billion annually certainly food for thought…

May Animal Place works and compassionate hearts & minds grow even bigger!!

  23. Han on Sep 10, 2013 at 11:07 am

    What a wonderful news!
Animals reserve the rights to continue their life, just imagine there are more people involve in this type of rescued act. Be the cause and become vegetarian certainly helps !

Thank you Rinpoche for this great post to create awareness.

  24. sarahyap on Sep 10, 2013 at 3:35 am

How kind… After so many years providing for humans, these hens do deserve a good and comfortable retirement. Nice to see that people are thinking of ways to repay kindness even if it’s to an animal. This may be something new, and some people may even find it ridiculous! But I think this is good conduct. Taking care of the animals (cows, hens, goats) after they are unable to produce for humans shows that they care, and are not here to exploit these animals or slaughter them when these animals are no longer useful to them.

  25. Wylfred Ng on Sep 9, 2013 at 11:07 pm

Thanks Rinpoche for the sharing. I really feel happy that some people would spend so much money to save the chickens that are supposed to be killed. For this moment, what i can do to help is to become a vegetarian. Hopefully i can become a full vegetarian in the near future

    This is crazy. 但等我们知道佛理过后,我们的心思会改变,会产生慈悲心,会有同情心,
    那是很自然的感觉。我会加油。。。 谢谢仁波切。

It’s just so amazing that someone cares so much for these hens as to secure their freedom!
Furthermore, they are flown to a retirement home where they can live out the rest of their days in peace and security!

“We are saved!” sounds like a joyous chorus from the hens!

    Thank you kind sponsor!

  28. Uncle Eddie on Sep 9, 2013 at 4:13 pm

Thanks to this kind “anonymous donor” thousands of California Hens have been saved! Yes, without Public support for all animals sanctuaries, animals’ lives cannot be saved – its up to us human beings to help save their lives. As Founder of Peta, Ingrid Newkirk has once said, “When it comes to pain, love, joy, loneliness and fear, a rat is a pig is a dog is a boy, each values his or her life and fights the knife”. Om Mani Padme Hum!

  29. KYC on Sep 9, 2013 at 4:12 pm

Imagine you were the chickens. One day you were about to die, the next day you are allowed to live your life as a free bird until you die a natural death. I’ve heard of stories like that about horses and cattle etc that have been put in animal sanctuaries after they have been “retired”. We must support organisations that take care of old and sick animals that are no longer useful to their owners.

  30. Albert Ratchaga on Sep 9, 2013 at 11:20 am

Not just dogs and cats, and not only chicken, in fact, all life beings has feeling, they need and they deserved love too from anyone else. We feel pain, sick, fear, hunger, uncomfortable or we feel love, comfort, joy, excitement, etc, etc.. Animals feel that too, human are not the exclusive one nor animal are not the special one, we are the same, we are exactly the same.

Although I’m not the animal person, but I do care and feel for them too, I’m very happy for these chicken to be released, they definitely deserved to have a happy and healthy life after all these years of hell type of living, they deserved to be free.

Thank you to all the anonymous’s donation and the shelter who take in the chicken, yes, you are never crazy, because you are definitely the most compassionate ones..

  31. Jessica Yap on Sep 9, 2013 at 2:00 am

Thank you anonymous benefactor! Because of your generosity and kindness, 3000 lives were spared from being gassed!! All animals and sentient beings can feel pain and trauma. Just because they’re at the lower rank on the food chain doesn’t mean that their lives are any less precious than ours..

I am so thankful that I was born into a healthy human body that would be able to help in any way I can. It is so hard to be able to be born into the human realm and be near our Guru and the Dharma.

    Thank you for sharing, Rinpoche!

Dear Rinpoche, I just liked CCTV-for-ALL-Slaughterhouses Facebook fan page. What Rinpoche wrote on the above is what I always think and say when I tell my friends about not eating animals. I feel so happy these chickens are freed from the slaughter house. I wish more animals will be free.

  37. Beatrix Ooi on Sep 8, 2013 at 12:10 am

This is something worth of rejoicing! Thanks to the anonymous benefactor who has kindly sponsored the chickens to be flown to the east cost! I like what Beach said, chickens are the same as dogs and cats, only if we change our mind setting, then we will realise that. Thank You for sharing Rinpoche.

  38. Pastor Han Nee on Sep 7, 2013 at 10:23 pm

Wow! Thousands of Californian hens not only escaped being gassed, but were flown by their kind savior to a happy retirement home on the east coast!

  39. Sean Wang on Sep 7, 2013 at 9:10 pm

I really have to thank the anonymous donor. The chickens really deserve a life of freedom after their life of torment. Animals do not deserve to be held hostage just to give to people who only harm in return. They need freedom. They need to be saved!

This is truly a great news, i hope through this inspiring story more and more people can develop compassion and not harm or kill any animal just to satisfy our palates, please stop eating meat, these hens deserve to live after they have reached the end of their egg-laying life. How wonderful that something like this is being done. Imagine these poor fowls whose meat many enjoy are tortured way beyond ordinary perception.

They are bred in most uncomfortable situations, to breed, then slaughtered for our insensitive appetite,
    and when old killed prematurely.

I rejoice for the kindness of this benefactor.

  47. Sharon Saw on Sep 7, 2013 at 11:31 am

What a lovely story for the weekend. It’s great that there are some people out there who believe that chickens deserve to live too. The majority of humans have been claiming dominion over animals for so long, believing that they can control those who are powerless to fight against them.

It is heartening to know that a minority care for animals and don’t just talk about it but walk the talk. Maybe the actions of a few may not make a huge difference, but for the chickens who were saved, it is HUGE 🙂

The anonymous donor will be blessed for this compassionate and altruistic action. We may say but we can’t afford to do what he or she did, by buying these chickens up to save them.. or that in our country, there isn’t a sanctuary like in the USA. It is true that we may not have the funds but what we can do – and easily too, with zero cost – is to stop eating meat because it’s all basic economics – demand and supply. When there is less demand, there will be less supply and these animals will suffer less.

    Thank you for sharing this.

  48. Irene Lim on Sep 7, 2013 at 11:11 am

Be happy and retire peacefully dear chickens. May the donor always have good health, live long and abundance wealth.

  49. MartinC on Sep 7, 2013 at 4:12 am

It is said that chicken are the most abused of farm animals and the conditions that they are placed in, the worst. For the egg industry, hens are “sentenced” to an entire life of suffering without a single day of reprieve while male chicks are immediately put to death. And when we consider that chickens have the same cognitive capabilities of mammals (they understand and feel pain/discomfort) it is frightening to imagine what they are put through. In that way, the poultry and egg industry is a business of death and suffering.

And considering the world-wide demand for eggs and chicken meat, I would not be surprised if chickens are one of the most abused and slaughtered beings in the world. From the day chicks are hatched, they are immediately inflicted pain.

It is quite a refreshing change to read this post and I am quite grateful that there are people who would go out of their way to rescue these animals who must also rank one of the highest abused animals to be ignored.

This story is also a reminder of how quickly and suddenly things can change. One minute, you are on death row and the next, you’re being flown on a private jet to freedom. The reverse also applies and just as quickly and suddenly.

  50. Pastor Yek Yee on Sep 7, 2013 at 2:23 am

As we can see in the video these people can help others through these powers , such abilities can also be developed through reciting mantras consistently on a daily basis. It is really interesting of to understand the existing of psychic, which may come from birth or by disaster like lightning.
Always fascinated by people who have psychic powers. Wonder how it feels like to be able to know and see things the way they do. Personally I don’t know anyone with this ability.Thank you very much for this interesting and educational article.

Thank you Pastor David for sharing all the wonderful encounters of shopping with Rinpoche. As we know Rinpoche rarely goes shopping for himself but as gifts for various students. Reading this post simply have me thinking, one must be observant to develop knowledge, and to apply what we read from the Lamrim topics into our lives. Being observant of our surroundings and practicing situational awareness at all times.

nteresting ….in Tibetan culture wild mushrooms spotted is a symbol of good luck. At Kechara Forest Retreat ,H.E. Tsem Rinpoche’s private garden, mushrooms been spotted which is considered a good omen something good or arrival of good news , very auspicious symbol. Associated with nature and the beauty of the forest, having mushrooms popping up on one garden is rare and is very auspicious in Tibetan Buddhism, which will represent the Dharma will flourish in the near future. It’s indeed an auspicious sign.
    Thank you for this sharing.

Religion should not come into politics as it is not one religion among other. These two should not mixed together or the results would be catastrophic To these days religion and politics seem to be all mixed up. It is happening to the present day where the Tibetan Leadership is against the Dorje Shugden practice. Its far too long the Dorje Shugden controversy been going on which is unnecessary and illogical causing sufferings, disharmony , discrimination and so forth among practitioners and non-practitioners. The Tibetan people should be given religious freedom to practise how and what they want. The Dalai Lama who promotes peace and harmony should do more to help those affected by the ban and not specking against them causing confusion. Hopefully the previous advice against Dorje Shugden should be retracted for the sake of a peace and harmony. It would be wonderful if Dalai Lama could have discussion with the Chinese leadership to solve the present problems once for all. China is a great and powerful nation, it would be good to have a good closer relationship . May Dalai Lama live long and back to his homeland Tibet soon. And may Dalai Lama lift the ban against Dorje Shugden .
Thank you Rinpoche for this sharing.

Tsem Rinpoche was one definitely a modern Lama ,it was Rinpoche that we have online knowledge , learning and practicing Dharma. Being one of the first lamas to recognise the benefits of using the Internet to spread dharma teachings for free. We are very fortunate to have met Rinpoche , whereby we are able to learn, practice Dharma teachings. I myself got to know Rinpoche through his blog . Since I stumbled across Rinpoche blog, there is no stopping for me. I have visited it daily and to increase my Buddhism knowledge . Its amazing each day I learn something new , really interest and inspiring.
Rinpoche had set the blog to preserve the teachings as taught by his many Gurus. Rinpoche was truly a modern Lama yet maintaining all traditional commitments, guru devotion, daily practices and so forth.
Thank you Rinpoche with folded hands and Pastor Jean Ai for sharing this wonderful post.

Helmut Gassner, known as Venerable Gelong Jampa Lungtog is a senior Buddhist monk from Austria. He was an electrical engineer before, and became interested in Buddhism after meeting Venerable Geshe Rabten Rinpoche. Throughout his lifetime, he has translated for many high lamas, including His Holiness the Dalai Lama, and is a strong advocate for the practice of Dorje Shugden. Helmut Gassner were annoyed and upset by the ban of Dorje Shugden by Dalai Lama ,as he knew that the practice of Dorje Shugden is an integral part of the Gaden Tradition. He bravely spoke about it in his speech at the Friedrich-Naumann-Foundation in Germany. Its wonderful of him to tell the truth with his experience and knowledge. May more people dare to speck up about the truth.
Thank you Rinpoche for this sharing.

Great teachings and inspirational for us to ponder, thank you Rinpoche. Each words and sentence tell us a thousand words. Great things never come from comfort zones, is the result of hard work and hustle over time that one is successful. We ourselves got to put in action as no one else is going to do it for us. Sometimes later becomes never. We have to use each day as an opportunity to improve, to be better and to transform our mind. It might sound like a lot of work but with determination and hard work nothing is impossible in life.
    Thanks again with folded hands.

Interesting biography of Gendun Gyatso the second Dalai Lama. Gendun Gyatso previous Incarnations was Gendun Drub the First Dalai Lama b.1391 – d.1474. He was born an extraordinary child, able to speak in song of his previous life and expressing the wish to return to his monastery, Tashilhunpo. Even before he finished his studies , incredibly he could give teachings and give initiations. He was a renowned scholar and composer of mystical poetry, who travelled widely to extend Gelugpa influence. He was remembered as one who built the monastery Chokhor Gyel Metok Tang and involving an extremely important decision of Lhamo Latso. Lhamo Latso is a sacred lake located in southern Tibet where senior Tibetan monks go for visions to assist in the discovery of reincarnations. It is one of the most significant pilgrimage destinations in Tibetan Buddhism as to this day. He left a legacy with many volumes of verse, composition, and practice instructions.

Thank you Rinpoche for the sharing . FEARLESS is getting back up and fighting for what we want over and over again without giving up. Successful people have no fear of failure they stay open to all possibilities of the outcomes. We embrace change, even change that appears negative by thinking positive. Being fearless is more about who we are, rather than what we do. Fearless people are great, they are full of life, good energy, passion and self-belief. We must try as we never know if we do not try. Keep trying as the success rate is higher than we thought.

Happiness is not made by what we own, it is what we share and giving generously and sincerely. A simple gift by June Tang tells all. Given sincerely from her heart on her birthday to Rinpoche . It’s all done without money, that’s very true and that’s what I consider true generosity for sure. Giving what she could. She give all and yet she feel as if it costs her nothing. But to Rinpoche its mean a lot of sincerity We seek to give with an open, pure heart, with no attachment to what we are .
Quoted… no true spiritual life is possible without a generous heart. Generosity allies itself with an inner feeling of abundance—the feeling that we have enough to share.
Thank you Rinpoche for this sharing .

There is no one that can help us, but us. Methods are given, but whether we grasp, apply and practise it is entirely up to oneself. If we don’t change then there is no point in learning the Dharma.
A transformed mind is our own best protection. That mind can only come from consistent practice over time. When we see results, we will be encouraged to push ourselves more to practice well.Thank you very much for sharing a good article.

Wonderful news ……the Chinese government has introduced a plan to encourage and reduce its citizens’ meat consumption by 50%, It’s a great move that China has done in the effort to avoid runaway global warming and for health reasons. The climate campaigners has been hoping for it. New dietary guidelines by the Chinese health officials have recommend and advise individuals to limit their meat consumption. As more evidence of chronic diseases such as heart attack, strokes ,hypertension and so forth are related to meat consumption. And for most to maintain a healthy life styles. They also implement dietary guidelines encouraging the general public to consume plenty of cereals, tubers, whole grains, legumes, vegetables and fruits as well. The Chinese government also put up billboards in attempt to reduce meat consumption by highlighting health risks associated with consuming meat. What we eat contributes to global greenhouse gas emissions and every one of us is responsible. People nowadays are reducing their meat consumption and opting for vegan and plant-based protein to improve their health . Hopefully more countries will follow China reducing the meat consumption. In a way more animals could be save in the slaughter house. And for the future generations to come .
Thank you for this wonderful news .

Different parts of the world have each various interesting traditions and customs which individual will celebrate and follow. Religious festivals like Gadhimai festival, which is an animal sacrificial ceremony, and dog meat festival where dogs are slaughtered to celebrate the summer solstice have gathered cultural significance over the centuries. In Gadhimai festival , they believe that animal sacrifices to the Hindu goddess Gadhimai will end evil and bring prosperity. In Spain bulls festival or the Toro de la Vega, bulls are torture and kill. Same goes to the Pero Palo Festival where scared donkey being dragged unwillingly through the packed streets . Drive hunting where dolphins and whales are caught and killed for their meat. All these are some of the hidden cruelty and crime against animals in the world which many are not aware of it and do not want to know. But with social media , more and more got to know about it and are trying to end all these animals cruelty. The Indian officials are cracking down and trying to stop the transportation of animals for this festivals. It is good that the number of animals slaughtered during the Gadhimai festival has dropped sharply over the years. The Yulin Dog Meat Festival, which happens every year is a gruesome display of the dog meat trade. Chinese officials are doing their best and discouraging people from eating dog meat which is harmful in long term. Recent years there has been a drop in the consumption of dog meat in the China. Many people are aware of the abuses and torture of those poor dogs before been kill as meat. Looking at those pictures in the articles, tells a thousand words of all the suffering of these animals in the moment before death.
Thank you Rinpoche and Shakila Rajendra for this sharing raising awareness of animals been abuse , torture and so forth.

The Unknown

The Known and unknown are both feared,
Known is being comfortable and stagnant,
The unknown may be growth and opportunities,
One shall never know if one fears the unknown more than the known.
Who says the unknown would be worse than the known?
But then again, the unknown is sometimes worse than the known. In the end nothing is known unless we endeavour,
So go pursue all the way with the unknown,
because all unknown with familiarity becomes the known.

What the meat industry figured out is that you don't need healthy animals to make a profit.
Sick animals are more profitable... farms calculate how close to death they can keep animals without killing them. That's the business model. How quickly they can be made to grow, how tightly they can be packed, how much or how little can they eat, how sick they can get without dying... We live in a world in which it's conventional to treat an animal like a block of wood. ~ Jonathan Safran Foer
