Dear friends,

I found this informative article that is a must read for all who have dogs at home! This article comes from a reputable website dedicated to providing good and accurate information particularly on animal health issues. It is shocking to find that many of the food served on our plates are actually harmful to our dogs… even deadly in some cases.

Do read this article and share it with your friends, it will make a difference. It is very important for us to read up and become knowledgeable on animal care, especially if you have decided to take on one (or many animals) under your care… Taking responsibility of our pets and ensuring that they are well-taken care of should be priority.

Caring for an animal that cannot return the favour is an act of pure kindness… Which one of the foods below did you not know was hazardous to dogs till you read this article? Do leave a comment and let me know… Are there any more types of food that should be added to the list??

Tsem Rinpoche

Dangerous Food For The Dogs

Avocado

Avocados contain a substance called persin. It’s harmless for humans who aren’t allergic. But large amounts might be toxic to dogs. If you happen to be growing avocados at home, keep your dog away from the plants. Persin is in the leaves, seed, and bark, as well as in the fruit.

Alcohol

Beer, liquor, wine, foods containing alcohol — none of it’s good for your dog. That’s because alcohol has the same effect on a dog’s liver and brain that it has on humans. But it takes far less to do its damage. Just a little can cause vomiting, diarrhea, central nervous system depression, problems with coordination, difficulty breathing, coma, even death. And the smaller the dog, the greater the effect.

Onions and Garlic

Onions and garlic in all forms — powdered, raw, cooked, or dehydrated — can destroy a dog’s red blood cells, leading to anemia. That can happen even with the onion powder found in some baby food. An occasional small dose is probably OK. But just eating a large quantity once or eating smaller amounts regularly can cause poisoning. Symptoms of anemia include weakness, vomiting, little interest in food, dullness, and breathlessness.

Coffee, Tea, and Other Caffeine

Caffeine in large enough quantities can be fatal for a dog. And, there is no antidote. Symptoms of caffeine poisoning include restlessness, rapid breathing, heart palpitations, muscle tremors, fits, and bleeding. In addition to tea and coffee – including beans and grounds — caffeine can be found in cocoa, chocolate, colas, and stimulant drinks such as Red Bull. It’s also in some cold medicines and pain killers.

Grapes and Raisins

Although it isn’t clear why, grapes and raisins can cause kidney failure in dogs. And just a small amount can make a dog ill. Repeated vomiting is an early sign. Within a day, the dog will become lethargic and depressed. The best prevention is to keep grapes and raisins off counters and other places your dog can reach.

Milk and Other Dairy Products

Milk and milk-based products can cause diarrhea and other digestive upset as well as set up food allergies (which often manifest as itchiness).

Macadamia Nuts

Dogs should not eat macadamia nuts or foods containing macadamia nuts because they can be fatal. As few as six raw or roasted macadamia nuts can make a dog ill. Symptoms of poisoning include muscle tremors, weakness or paralysis of the hindquarters, vomiting, elevated body temperature, and rapid heart rate. Eating chocolate with the nuts will make symptoms worse, possibly leading to death.

Candy and Gum

Candy, gum, toothpaste, baked goods, and some diet foods are sweetened with xylitol. Xylitol can cause an increase in the insulin circulating through your dog’s body. That can cause your dog’s blood sugar to drop and can also cause liver failure. Initial symptoms include vomiting, lethargy, and loss of coordination. Eventually, the dog may have seizures. Liver failure can occur within just a few days.

Chocolate

The toxic agent in chocolate is theobromine. It’s in all kinds of chocolate, even white chocolate. The most dangerous kinds, though, are dark chocolate, chocolate mulch, and unsweetened baking chocolate. Eating chocolate, even just licking the icing bowl, can cause a dog to vomit, have diarrhea, and be excessively thirsty. It can also cause abnormal heart rhythm, tremors, seizures, and death.

Fat Trimmings and Bones

Table scraps often contain meat fat that a human didn’t eat and bones. Both are dangerous for dogs. Fat trimmed from meat, both cooked and uncooked, can cause pancreatitis in dogs. And, although it seems natural to give a dog a bone, a dog can choke on it. Bones can also splinter and cause an obstruction or lacerations of your dog’s digestive system. It’s best to just forget about the doggie bag.

Persimmons, Peaches, and Plums

The problem with these fruits is the seeds or pits. The seeds from persimmons can cause inflammation of the small intestine in dogs. They can also cause intestinal obstruction. Obstruction is also a possibility if a dog eats the pit from a peach or plum. Plus, peach and plum pits contain cyanide, which is poisonous to both humans and dogs. The difference is humans know not to eat them. Dogs don’t.

Raw Eggs

There are two problems with giving your dog raw eggs. The first is the possibility of food poisoning from bacteria like Salmonella or E. coli. The second is that an enzyme in raw eggs interferes with the absorption of a particular B vitamin. This can cause skin problems as well as problems with your dog’s coat if raw eggs are fed for a long time.

Salt

It’s not a good idea to share salty foods like chips or pretzels with your dog. Eating too much salt can cause excessive thirst and urination and lead to sodium ion poisoning. Symptoms of too much salt include vomiting, diarrhea, depression, tremors, elevated body temperature, and seizures. It may even cause death.

Sugary Foods and Drinks

Too much sugar can do the same thing to dogs that it does to humans. It can lead to obesity, dental problems, and possibly the onset of diabetes.

Yeast Dough

Before it’s baked, bread dough needs to rise. And, that’s exactly what it would do in your dog’s stomach if your dog ate it. As it swells inside, the dough can stretch the dog’s abdomen and cause severe pain. In addition, when the yeast ferments the dough to make it rise, it produces alcohol that can lead to alcohol poisoning.

Your Medicine

Reaction to a drug commonly prescribed for humans is the most common cause of poisoning in dogs. Just as you would do for your children, keep all medicines out of your dog’s reach. And, never give your dog any over-the-counter medicine unless told to do so by your vet. Ingredients such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen are common in pain relievers and cold medicine. And, they can be deadly for your dog.

Wow!! I never ever gave this a thought that dogs cant sat so many things. Many people i know just simply feed their dogs anythin..including fruits. But luckily not gum as listed here because it is very gluey and will get stuck in their throat and suffocate the dog to death. Thank you very much Rinpoche for sharing this very important information with us _/\_ 🙂

I am curious if some hot peppers would have the same health benefits for a dogs health as they do for humans. I’ve been reading so much negative news about vaccines I kinda feel that sensible eating is more effective and safer than injecting posions and taking part in medical statistics by being that test subject

    • Tsem Rinpoche on Apr 5, 2016 at 3:29 pm

      Dear Michael Dearing,

Dogs are like humans. They have different body temperaments. Some things one dog can eat another may not. It would be good to do research if overall can dogs eat chili and do let me know your findings. I would be interested here.

And then we must experiment with our dogs if we find out that a certain food is generally safe for dogs to consume.

      Thank you.

    • Kps on Jan 22, 2017 at 2:24 am

Hot peppers have no health benefits to dogs and can cause digestive irritation.

  18. Sally on Sep 24, 2014 at 12:27 pm

Sorry to say so but some of this information is inaccurate. Not sure about all of it but I know for sure that garlic is totally fine for dogs and is used in many dog foods and also as a natural remedy for keeping fleas away. I’ve had several good vets tell me this and it has been used on dogs for hundreds of years.

    • Richard on Apr 26, 2017 at 7:17 am

Garlic is not fine golf dogs. It contains thiosulfates that cause clumping of red blood cells, reducing their ability to carry oxygen and causing them to die much quicker than replacements can be produced leading to anemia. Garlic is less dangerous than onion. If you look at the detailed ingredients of dog food that contains onion or garlic, you will find the quantities are less than a few milligrams per 100g or 1000g.

      • Pastor Shin Tan on Apr 29, 2017 at 8:42 am

Thank you for your comment. I read from a few articles that consumption of around 15 to 30 gram of garlic per kilogram for dogs will result in harmful changes in a dog’s blood. As the average clove of supermarket garlic weighs between 3 and 7 grams, that would be quite a number of cloves. A pet’s weight, type of breed and prior health history can vary the toxicity level of ingested garlic, so it is best to consult your regular vet. It may take up to two to four days after your pet eats garlic for symptoms to appear, so keep a look out of the symptoms, such as: include breathlessness, lethargy, diarrhea, vomiting, pale gums, an elevated heart rate, an increased respiratory rate, weakness, exercise intolerance, and collapse.

        • Richard on Apr 29, 2017 at 8:49 pm

If you’re cooking yourself than you may be able to monitor the exact amount of garlic. However, it is surprising how much garlic and onion is in some Italian/French/Asian recipes!

    Dear Rinpoche,

Though I don’t have a pet or dog I still find this article very helpful to me because with this article I can help other people who have dogs but don’t know about such facts at all, it may seem like a small article but it is a very big and serious thing when it comes to watching what your dog can eat and cannot eat.

This article has also boosted my knowledge on what a dog cannot eat as well as my knowledge when other people feed a stray dog one of this 16 foods and I see it and I would stop them from feeding the restricted food to the stray dog.

One out of the 16 foods that blew my mind was that dogs cannot eat bones because I have seen hundreds of dogs being feed and eating bones.

Anyway Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this very knowledgeable blog post.

    Love
    Jutika

These foodstuffs are really interesting because some like fats and dog bones are what most people feed their pet dogs. This is really good information for all dog owners so we can take care to ensure our dogs eat good food that do not cause long term damage to their little bodies. I think that Tsem Rinpoche takes care of his dogs really well and that this is a part of ongoing research that Rinpoche does with his students to ensure the dogs are always healthy and happy.

Thank you for sharing this really useful info. I used to feed my dog cheese! Also there were chocolate doggy treats which made me think that chocolates were okay for dogs (once i came home from work and found a kit kat wrapper shredded in the living room and i thought it was my husband who had eaten it but later found out it was my dog! My husband had asked me why i thought he had decimated the wrapper…)

Anyway i shall definitely keep these tips in mind and share them as all dog owners should know this.

  36. nicholas on Aug 19, 2012 at 1:01 pm

Thank you Rinpoche for this sharing.
I have been seeing people giving their dogs eat so many type of food and some of them mentioned above. We really need to be very careful and of course caring to our pets. What the do and don’ts. Instead of we thought that we are being good for sharing what we have with our lovely pets we actually cause more suffering to them. Learn up and get more knowledge is important and this is definitely a great sharing for all the dog’s lover. We show our care by our right action not by our negligent and irresponsible attitude.

  37. wei theng on Aug 17, 2012 at 8:47 pm

This is very informative. Now i learned that actually we should not give milk or dairy product to dog. Also, should not let them have raw eggs too. I must let my friends who have dogs to know about this as people used to told me that they let their dog drink milk and have raw egg so that it will be good to their fur. For Chinese, some also used to give their dogs left over food. this would be bad for the dogs too as it is normally salty and bad for dogs.
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing these. Now we have more knowledge to be a more responsible dog owner.

Thank you for sharing this. I have always known about chocolate, avocado and grape products, but the rest are new to me and this is very valuable information indeed. As they say, a dog is for life, and our dog’s welfare is totally dependent on us. So, since we have taken this living sentient being home and into our lives, we should educate ourselves as much as possible on how to provide the best care for them.

Rinpoche is a shining example of animal care, and if you ever have the chance to get to know Mumu, Oser and Dharma, you will be able to see for yourself how happy, well fed and well cared for they are. Rinpoche spares no expense when it comes to their health, and when they are very ill, as Mumu was a couple of years ago, Rinpoche even gets pujas and dedicates statues to their well being.

The last time Mumu was ill with pancreatitis, we had Medicine Buddha and Namgyalma pujas done for him, and a statue of Medicine Buddha dedicated for his long life and swift recovery. True enough, Mumu is back to normal, and hasnt had an attack of pancreatitis for a year now.

I found that giving the wrong type of dog food to my pet will cause him skin allergy. He is an English bulldog and he looks tough but he is such a sweetie. English bulldogs get skin rashes easily if they take chicken flavour pet food so I bought organic vegetarian lamb pet food instead. It worked. His skin rashes and allergy disappeared. We need to know all kinds of food our pet cannot take so we do not cause them harm.

  42. Su Ming on Aug 4, 2012 at 2:58 pm

OMG, I almost fed Gizmo some Avocado snacks the other day. I have threw those snacks away.

It is very scary and pet owners should look through all the ingredients before buying the snacks or food. Most of these manufacturers are very commercial and they do not have intensive research done to the food for animals.

Do not take this lightly as it can affect your pet in a long run and could be detrimental to their health in a short run also.

  43. william on Aug 2, 2012 at 3:29 pm

Thank you for the informativearticle. Now I know so manyitems thsticould not feed my dogs with. I was guilty of feeding my dogs raw eggs and the left over meat/fats cos i thought it will be good for them. How ignorant of me! It will not happen again. Recently, I heard from a friend that a dog treathebought from a pet store has avacado in it! How could this happen? Doesn’t the manufacturer know better of what to put in or not! So, dog owners, please read the ingredients carefully before feeding your dog any food products.

  44. David Lai on Jul 30, 2012 at 10:24 pm

Omg! Zamkar would just eat everything and anything that falls off our plates and that’s very scary. I have to be extra careful because Zamkar always hover around sniffing every time I am having my meals. On the flip side, Zamkar’s stomach is made of steel.

There was a time, he dived into a cake and ate it all up and there was another time, he ate all the wax off the tea lights from a packet of tea lights. However, I am not going to risk giving him any of these types of food. In fact, I never give him any human food.

  45. Paris on Jul 30, 2012 at 3:34 am

It’s important to also find out the sensitivities of your particular dog’s breed. For example, schnauzers are prone to suffering pancretitis and kidney so their diets would have to be further adjusted accordingly to suit their health conditions (ie they shouldn’t be given so much meat, food with high fat level etc).

Then there’s the opposite side of the spectrum – our family have also had dogs that eat everything and nothing at all happens to them. So while it does take some time for us to ascertain each individual dog’s dietary habits, allergies, sensitivities etc, we should try as much as possible to go with what is recommended by the vets or on the many sources we can now find on dogs (on and offline). Always better to be safe than sorry, especially when a mumu’s life is in our hands.

Very useful information, would be sharing to all i know. Now i know why my Great Grand Mother stopped me from feeding the dog with chocolate when I was a young boy. And being a boy I used to teased the dog with hot chilli mixed with food. Luckily chilli is not in the list. Even though Dog is Man’s best friend, we have to be selective in sharing the food to avoid harming them.

  48. jennifer on Jul 29, 2012 at 4:54 pm

Thank you Rinpoche for the list of foods that furry babies cannot eat.
I’m also told that eggplant and tomatoes are not good for doggies as they can cause indigestion. And also chicken is very bad for doggies with very sensitive skin . I have a furry baby who is highly allergic to chicken and would break up in a most awful and distressing rash. Most the chickens that we purchase in the supermarkets and wet markets are not free range and would have had hormone injections, that would cause a terrible reaction to doggies who are hypersensitive.
I’m now giving my furry babies fresh vegetables like long beans and fruits like apple slices and carrot sticks for little treats instead of store purchase treats as these treats contain preservatives and colouring , and also they are fed with home cooked food like a variety of fresh vegetables, minced lean meat ( not chicken) and carefully deboned fish.
Our pets are our responsibility and we should give them the best what we possibly can.

After I read the above post, I feel guilty for giving my dogs raw egg with rice. I usually give them canned dog food and rice and once ion a while I will add raw egg with the hot rice so I don’t have to fry it as I find it oily. Daddy love to take the bones from his after meal to give to his neighbor’s dogs but he soaks and wash it beforehand so it won’t be salty. Daddy never give them chicken bones as it might choke the dogs with the sharp edge. This post is definitely an eye opener. Thank you Rinpoche for the information.

Thank you so much Rinpoche, for sharing this with everyone here. Although I know dogs should not be fed chocolate, I have been feeding milk to some stray dogs and puppies. I must stop giving milk to dogs from now. My mom used to add garlic and sometimes sugar into the rice for her pet dog. She believe it will give the dog a healthy coat. How ignorant we are. Instead of doing any good, we are poisoning them. Now that we have this guide, we will stop feeding any dogs these foods.

  53. EricLee KHJB on Jul 26, 2012 at 7:49 pm

  54. sweekeong on Jul 26, 2012 at 6:41 pm

Oh my goodness. There are so many foods dog cannot take, easily caused by poisoning, and lead to death. I would never have known about it. If we think it is better to be born a dog, think again, many foods we cannot take, and you can get easily killed from the food you take.

  55. Julia Tan on Jul 26, 2012 at 6:36 pm

Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this with us. This is definitely helpful to everyone. Whether we have a dog at home or not, I think it’s always good to know this common knowledge. If we care enough to protect and love our dogs or stray dogs, we have to be careful and keep this food away from them.

  56. Cynthia Ng on Jul 25, 2012 at 11:28 pm

  57. patsy on Jul 25, 2012 at 11:00 pm

I do not have a pet dog now but during my younger days and still living with my parents, we did have a dog. We fed our dog with leftover food including chicken bones and when our dog was a puppy we even fed him milk, chocolate and cakes. Gosh, lucky thing nothing happened to him and he died of old age.

Thank you, Rinpoche, for sharing this information so that dog owners will be more aware of not giving these food to their dogs.

  58. yenpin on Jul 25, 2012 at 10:16 pm

I didn’t know dogs cannot consume raw eggs and milk/dairy products. We have been giving our family dogs those stuff! At least we know now. Thank you Rinpoche for sharing.

  61. Yvonne Yap on Jul 25, 2012 at 1:54 pm

    Thanks Rinpoche for sharing,

Yes, this is the things we should know, some people eat what then they will let the dog eat the same things, this is very dangerous for a dog, because dog can not talk , if the owner never observe, the will get harm.

We should take care all the animal _/\_

  62. pat on Jul 25, 2012 at 10:36 am

Thank you for this great info for all dogs lovers.Didn’t realise there were so many forbidden food for dogs.Only knew chocolate and salt were not allowed, usually we feed dogs with leftovers and table scraps but now we must be very careful as not to make them feel uncomfortable and suffer.

  63. wah ying on Jul 25, 2012 at 12:40 am

I do not know avocado was hazardous to dogs, I only know chocolate and salt are the most common food should not feed to dogs.

Other food I get from Animal websites that to be harmful (to some dogs and some not, but better to avoid) are mushroom. Actually mushroom sell on supermarket or market are not poisonous but it’s with the purpose to avoid dogs to develop the habit of eating mushroom, especially some wild mushroom which are poisonous when they come across one outside.

Raw meat is another food to avoid. Most veterinarians don’t like it because of the toxic bacteria that is present, such as E. coli and Salmonella.

Pork is not a meat that dogs easily digest because of its high fat, it often makes them vomit, whether cooked or raw.

In small amounts liver is good for dogs, but if the liver intake is too high it can cause nutritional problems because liver has a high content of vitamin A. Consumption of this vitamin in large amounts can lead to vitamin A toxicity, or hypervitaminosis.

Hot food would do harm to dogs’ nose, reduce it’s sensitivity. Too cold the food, it would hurt dogs’ stomach and cause diarrhea.

  64. Paul Yap on Jul 25, 2012 at 12:37 am

Never though of milk will cause diarrhea and other digestive upset as well as food allergies.
We so use to feed puppies with milk, but after reading this, no more milk for them! I hope more people read this too!

  65. lucy yap on Jul 24, 2012 at 11:30 pm

Didn’t know there are so many foods that dogs can’t eat.The most common I know is chocolate. The only extra food I give my dogs are hard boiled eggs and apples, besides dog food/biscuits.
Thank you Rinpoche for this information to save our dogs from suffering of diarrhea, vomit and etc.We must love our dogs and treat them as part of the family.

Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this informative article,it is really help^_^ I only knew that dogs cannot eat chocolate,i just realise that many types of foods and fruits cannot feed to dogs after i read this article.I will remember and share this information to my friend whom are the dogs owner!!

  67. Lim (KH JB) on Jul 24, 2012 at 9:32 pm

Normally we will give the dogs to eat the food we left and dog foods, but from this article we learn that there are many more foods that we should give to dogs. Thanks Rinpoche for sharing this informative article to us however whose have no dog at home, we may share this info to others.

Sometimes we feel that give our lovely dog to eat some special food but it will get harm for them. So we must be more careful when take care of them.

  68. Low ksjc on Jul 24, 2012 at 8:57 pm

Thank you Rinpoche for the sharing. We must be more careful when we intend to feed a stray dog the next time.In the past,we always assume that the dog stomach is much stronger then human.By looking at the list we better make sure we do not feed the dog left over mutton curry it is definitely a big NO NO .

  69. Milly on Jul 24, 2012 at 4:46 pm

I didnt know that yeast dough, avocados, persimmons, peaches, grapes, raisins are not good for dogs. I thought that all fruits are good as contains vitamins and fibre. My dog’s vet advised not to feed chicken or beef if a dog has skin problem. To feed only lamb, salmon or duck. Perhaps dogs can also have a vegetarian diet for a healthier lifestyle. Thank you Rinpoche for your concern for all sentient beings and animals well being are also constantly in your mind.

  70. Sheryl KH (JB) on Jul 24, 2012 at 4:18 pm

This article is informative, for it may have listed quite a number of foods that we shouldnt give to dogs.

While I have known some foods listed here, other foods such as yeast dough and avocado surprise me.

To keep a dog healthy, we surely have to be aware of those foods which we shouldnt give them at all, such as coke during celebrations and human medicine during emergency cases. Their bodies simply function differently from us.

Better be careful than sorry. For organ failures or sudden sickness can easily take away the lives of our beloved pets unnexpectedly.

  71. Han on Jul 24, 2012 at 3:46 pm

Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this informative article, I used to give my pets some human food, and I now only aware that actually there are so many food that dogs need to avoid.
All dogs owner really need to be extra careful and aware of all the 16 things that dog can’t eat.

I used to scare of any dog (big or small) as bitten by dog during i was a child. But only started this year i have rescued Longlong from street. A lot of these informations i am still learning. It really gives me better understanding about what and what not to give to dog to eat. Must remember now… and always beware of these delicious food of human is a poison to our little furry kids at home!

Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this wonderful for all dogs lover. So far i only know that dog cannot eat chocolate only. In fact there are so many things that dogs cannot eat. Will keep it in my mind not letting my pets eat all the food mention above.

Sometimes we wont notice that they eat these food if we didnt keep all these food properly. Have to keep awareness to store our food where the dogs can reach.

  75. Sofi on Jul 24, 2012 at 12:32 pm

My goodness, I have given my dogs some of those stated above. Avocado and garlic. Thought those are good for them. Thanks Rinpoche for this timely posting. I think its an eye opener for many dog owners as well.

  76. Mei Fong on Jul 24, 2012 at 11:40 am

OMG!! My dog will eat up anything that is dropped on the floor by accident. I will need to be careful about this. Sometimes its hard to prevent since he is super quick and swift in getting the food. There was once he nearly eat a whole loaf of bread which he manage to cause it to fall off the dining table. For those that allow their dog to do strolls by themselves outside in the evening are very dangerous as they are exposed to people who might not have knowledge about this and might even provide the doggies with their leftover food which normally is cooked with onions and garlic.

  77. Jace Chong on Jul 24, 2012 at 11:35 am

    Thanks Rinpoche for sharing these.

Omg! I should bear in mind not to give all these food to doggies! Sometimes, when we have extra fruits at home, we just cut and feed them, now have to remind myself fruits like avocado, grapes, persimmons, peaches and plum are not the right food the give them.

But raw egg can save a dog life according to Dr.Hank, a veterinary. I used to have a dog in my house, we will let the dog go out and have a walk by himself in the evening and he will come back by himself around 1 hour. One day, the dog came back and start vomiting, after a while he started to choke. He must had eaten something poisonous outside. We were so worried but we did not know what to do. The dog died, it was so sad for us.

After that I called Dr.Hank, he told me I should break a raw egg and force to the dog mouth. As the raw egg is sticky, it will stick all the things that stuck in his throat, he will throw out everything. This could save his life.

I hope dog owners can also bear in mind that this could help during the emergency.

    • Amber on Sep 3, 2013 at 2:08 am

Specifically dogs cannot have raw egg whites. Yolks are good for them. If I bake with egg whites, I mix the remaining yolks into my dog’s food. There is a chemical in egg whites that binds to a B vitamin and minerals that make the dog (or human) unable to absorb them.

Beautiful paintings explaining about the life of Lama Tsongkapa. That’s great sharing more readers will get to know and understand Lama Tsongkapa the great Tibetan Buddhist monk, philosopher and tantric yogi. Reading his brief biography and his great life story in 15 beautiful and meaningful paintings. Fortunate to practice the Guru Yoga of Lama Tsongkhapa as it is a short, profound and concise practice which has vast, innumerable benefits. This very powerful, yet accessible practice as it does not require initiation or empowerment. Looking at those beautiful thangka as in this blog is a blessing.

Inspiring teachings from Pabongka Rinpoche. Taking refuge in Tibetan Buddhism is the foundation of all Buddhist practice, marking the entrance to the path by committing to the Three Jewels . It is a profound and active process of seeking protection from suffering by consciously adopting a Buddhist direction in life. The act of going for refuge marks the point where we decides to take the Dharma as the primary guide to the conduct in one’s life. Taking refuge is a form of aspiration, leading us a life with the Triple Gem at its core.

From ancient times to the colonial era courtesans are deeply rooted in the historical fabric of India. Their culture refers to the historical role of high-class, educated female entertainers in societies. These women held significant cultural and social influence, acting as patrons of the arts. They are known for exceptional skills in classical music, dance and poetry. It was during the British colonial rule and the rise of modern social values , these cultures seems to decline. Many women nowadays began to receive equal recognition, appreciation, and stature been noticed. And yet there is still in some place women were seconded in some societies. When it comes to mind training and the development of compassion and wisdom, gender does not matter. In Buddhism, there’s no discrimination toward women, both men and women are equal. It has proven that many women have gained full enlightenment in a female body.
Thank you Rinpoche for this inspiring sharing.

Mount Wutai is a sacred Buddhist mountain. The cultural landscape is home to forty-one monasteries. Its central area is surrounded by a cluster of flat-topped peaks or mesas roughly corresponding to the cardinal directions. Significance of Mount Wutai is one of the Four Sacred Mountains in Chinese Buddhism. Each of the mountains is viewed as the bodhimaṇḍa of one of the four great bodhisattvas. Wu Tai San is the home of the Bodhisattva of wisdom Manjushri. Beautiful architectural temples have been built since from the 1st century AD to the early 20th century. The temples are inseparable from their mountain landscape. Those monasteries of Mount Wutai remain an important repository of Buddhist culture. Every year it has attract thousands of pilgrims from across a wide part of Asia. Mount Wutai is an exceptional testimony to the cultural tradition of religious mountains that are developed with monasteries. The temples demonstrate a long history of construction and reconstruction. Wutai Shan is worth visiting for its rich Buddhist culture, historical temples, and stunning natural scenery. Visitors can experience a spiritual atmosphere, see numerous temples. I am fortunate joining Kechara group visiting these Holy places at Wu tai Shan years back, witnessing the beauty of the mountain landscape, even though that time some areas still be under construction and can be crowded. Beyond its cultural sites, the mountain offers impressive natural scenery with lush greenery, mountain streams, and panoramic views.
Thank you Rinpoche for this sharing as it reminds me of my pilgrimage trip.

The right attitude when receiving offerings is one of gratitude, humility, and joy, recognizing the act as an expression of the giver’s generosity and a means to fulfil their spiritual path. It is important to accept gifts graciously, as refusing them can be impolite or seen as rejecting someone’s kindness. Appreciate the giver’s generosity and understand that the offering represents a sacrifice of their own resources. Rejoice in the giver’s generosity: Be happy for the giver’s spiritual practice of making the offering, which helps them to reduce their own attachments to material possessions. In Buddhism, receiving offerings requires an attitude of rejoicing in the giver’s generosity, understanding the offering as a practice for the donor, and a commitment to use it to benefit others. Recipients should have a compassionate and selfless motivation, viewing the act as a mutual opportunity for generosity and a way to help the giver reduce their attachments. Well using the offering wisely to further spiritual practice and the benefit of all sentient beings. We encouraged to make offerings to the Three Jewels but even more so, we are encouraged to make offerings to our gurus, considered the most precious of all. A precise teachings from this post.
Thank you Rinpoche and Khong Jean Ai.

Offering butter lamps is a Buddhist practice symbolizing wisdom dispelling ignorance. Many benefits when we offer butter lamps such as accumulating merit, purifying negativity, achieving spiritual clarity, and receiving blessings for wealth and well-being. The act is a powerful act of devotion, helps guide the deceased, and is used to focus one’s mind for meditation. When we practices with correct motivation it lead us to greater wisdom, clarity of mind, and the ability to discern virtue from non-virtue. The ultimate goal is to use this practice as a step toward enlightenment and liberation from suffering. The flame of the lamp symbolizes wisdom, and lighting it represents the removal of the darkness of ignorance and confusion. Awesome …offering butter lamps is seen as a way to generate good karma and merit for oneself and others. As this light offerings brings happiness, liberation from suffering, enlightenment, and the ability to help others as well.
Thank you Rinpoche for this sharing. with the detailed explanation of why we do butter lamps. A profound teachings.

Found this old post , an example shown to us how compassionate Rinpoche was, helping those vendors on the streets . No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted. Be kind whenever possible we could do to help those in need. It is always possible. In the second video showing how much care Rinpoche serving foods to workers and sharing, explaining with them about Dharma. Rinpoche kindness in action has inspired us to be kind and helping those who might fighting a hard battle. Everywhere we go, leave a glitter trail of kindness behind us if possible..

Pilgrimage is important in Buddhism because it deepens spiritual understanding, fosters a connection to the Buddha’s life and teachings. It also provides us the opportunities for personal transformation. It helps practitioners to purify negative karma, cultivate positive merit, and strengthen their devotion to the Three Jewels. Visiting sacred sites can also inspire virtuous conduct and a sense of urgency in practicing the faith. Some places of pilgrimage have powerful energy which can bring our mind to present moment. Major sites of Buddhist pilgrimage are often found in northern India in places associated with the Buddha’s life, teaching and enlightenment. Going on a pilgrimage gives us a chance to step away from the chaos of our schedules.
Reading this article again reminds me of my pilgrimage to Nepal years back,. It’s a once life time trip but I am glad made it twice.
It’s a great memories for Pastor David and Paul who brought their parents om pilgrimage to India and Nepal. Awesome …they embarked on a spiritual journey in India and Nepal visited sacred temples, ancient Buddhist sites and Serpom Monastery.

The Nature of the mind is a central concept across various philosophical traditions, It generally refers to the mind’s intrinsic characteristics. As it believed to encompass awareness, purity, and a capacity for both peace and agitation. Most spiritual traditions offer some combination of four practices for those who would seek to know their true nature. We could self-transform through training our mind. When we face difficult situations and things go poorly in our lives, if we’re able to change our attitudes toward them, we’ll be able to transform these experiences into ones that will further our spiritual progress. A profound teachings indeed for us to understand more about the true nature of our minds and how we can transform our minds through sincerely practicing.

I started a healing journey with Dr EHIMARE for 4weeks because I had a chronic infection . He is absolutely the best! He recognizes every ability and modifies for all his patients . I love his page on Instagram and is so informative about health issues. I was at the 3rd week of my healing journey when I decided to go for a test with out him knowing. I was shocked, my dr was also shocked , and tears of joy rolled down from eyes. Because am free from the deadly infection.

The Unknown

The Known and unknown are both feared,
Known is being comfortable and stagnant,
The unknown may be growth and opportunities,
One shall never know if one fears the unknown more than the known.
Who says the unknown would be worse than the known?
But then again, the unknown is sometimes worse than the known. In the end nothing is known unless we endeavour,
So go pursue all the way with the unknown,
because all unknown with familiarity becomes the known.
~Tsem Rinpoche

What the meat industry figured out is that you don't need healthy animals to make a profit.
Sick animals are more profitable... farms calculate how close to death they can keep animals without killing them. That's the business model. How quickly they can be made to grow, how tightly they can be packed, how much or how little can they eat, how sick they can get without dying... We live in a world in which it's conventional to treat an animal like a block of wood. ~ Jonathan Safran Foer

Inspired by Kin Hoe's (Ipoh) and Sam's (Kuantan) updates, here... introducing our No. 1 members, Mr. Teo and Aunt Betty. They are always early for preparation, cleaning, and arranging. Bottom pic is Hue & Mr. Loh. They are sharing and exchanging views on ritual practices that support spiritual practices before puja. KPSG by Jacinta.

Tormas are regularly being changed. It's solely the commitments from one of our dedicated members, Choong Soon Heng. Without him, we would not have gathered an abundance of merits. Thanks! Kechara Penang Study Group by Jacinta.

It's been a while since our last update. When KFR was busy organising, serving & helping visiting monks together with their chunks of activities in Bentong, back here in Penang, our small but sturdy Penang Study Group has been consistently having their weekly Dorje Shugden Puja @ every Saturday at 3 pm. Here's one update, completed on 6th September 2025. Kechara Penang Study Group by Jacinta.
