Esquire Magazine calls

Dear friends,

I received a message from my assistant that the international magazine Esquire wanted to interview me… I said ok… the time was set and they came over. The interviewer was a pleasant, intelligent and nice young man. I enjoyed the interview. Well here it is. Thanks to everyone involved.

Tsem Rinpoche

ESQUIRE (Malaysia), May 2012, pg. 90-91

In our May Meaning of Life Issue, we sit down for an interview with one of the country’s most avant-garde spiritual leaders. Tsem Rinpoche is a lama who founded the Buddhist organisation Kechara, and can count living on the streets, being scouted for acting roles, and modelling as just some of the more unusual parts of his past. So it’s no surprise we wanted to sit down with him, and hear his thoughts on Madonna, Steven Seagal, and his role as a spiritual leader. We have included special soundbites from our interview, so listen away!

This is the online version, click on this link to read the full article: http://www.esquire.my/People/What-Ive-Learned/article/Tsem-Tulku-Rinpoche

Here are seven choice quotes (In case the link not working, this is duplicated here):

I really didn’t want to be a monk just teaching compassion, and people walking off the streets, getting a blessing and walking out saying, “I didn’t understand anything.” I wanted to bring it out to contemporary people. I wanted people to look exactly as they look, but be different on the inside. (listen to this quote below:)

      Meaning of Life - Rinpoche - 1

Romantic movies, I know the beginning, I know the middle, I know the end. It’s not even predictable. You don’t have to be a Tibetan psychic monk to know it. It’s just boring. (listen to this quote below:)

      Meaning of Life - Rinpoche - 2

People’s general mentality towards spirituality is this: if I’m not happy, make me happy. I’m not at peace, so I come to get peace. I can’t get a girlfriend, I need your help to get one. They come with those kinds of motivations. And I look at them and say, “Take a real good look. Do I look like a dating agency?”

Oh, I wanted to be an actor. I chose to become a monk because it was an instruction from my teacher. And now, people tell me, you should have been an actor, then a monk, you would have been another Steven Seagal. But I thought to myself, don’t regret my path, just follow the path of what I’ve chosen. I trusted this old master all the way.

I said to myself, I’m going to blog about what I like. I’m not going to blog about what they expect. So you wouldn’t think it’s a Buddhist monk’s blog. I blog about Madonna, UFOs, food. I’m not trying to be different. Those are things I’m interested in. (listen to this quote below:)

      Meaning of Life - Rinpoche - 3

What I like about Madonna is that she never stays stagnant. She’s very up-beat and with the times. “Girl Gone Wild”, I love that song. (we thought this whole segment about a monk talking about Madonna was so unique, we have included the entire portion where Rinpoche talks about her. Listen to this below:)

      Meaning of Life - Rinpoche - 4

I dare say with the deepest respect to everyone, I don’t think one religion suits everyone.

We have also looked through the YouTube archives, and found some videos of Rinpoche before, during and after:

A younger Rinpoche talking about meditating.

Rinpoche responding to a question on his Facebook page on jealousy.

Rinpoche promoting his new show about the paranormal, which is set to air on NTV7 tentatively in August.

Esquire is an American men’s magazine based in New York City , it has been published by the Hearst Corporation since 1986. Found this old post and realised such an international magazine had interviewed our Guru Tsem Rinpoche long ago. Esquire described our Rinpoche as one of the country’s most avant-garde spiritual leaders. That’s true Tsem Rinpoche down to earth very special Lama and founded the Buddhist organization Kechara. We are fortunate to have Rinpoche in Malaysia, showing us the way.
Thank you Rinpoche with folded hands

A poem inspired by seeing a picture of my teacher, Kyabje Zong Rinpoche…

In the sport of correct views,
all that is correct is just a view,
    without permanence or substance.
As long as we hold onto views,
    our sufferings are gathered
    to be experienced without end.

Without the strong methods of emptiness
    and compassion, bereft of merit,
    we sink deeper without respite.
To arise from this samsara is but
a dreamscape on the deluded mind.
Therefore seek the guru, who confers the yidam,
hold your vows and fixate on liberation
free of new creations. Free of new experiences as
    there are none.

I was walking past a second hand shop on Western Ave selling old things. They had a Japanese-style clay Buddha which was beige in colour on the floor, holding the door open. I thought the shopkeeper would collect a lot of negative karma without knowing if he kept such a holy item on the floor as a doorstop. So I went in to talk to him, but he didn’t look like he wanted to talk or that he even cared. So I asked him the price and he said US$5. I purchased it so he did not collect more negative karma. I was 17 years old and that was in 1982.

I escorted my new Buddha home and washed it lightly and wiped it. I placed it on my altar and was happy with the Buddha. I would do my meditations, prayers, sadhanas, mantras and prostrations in front of this shrine daily. When I left for India in 1987, I could not bring this Buddha along and gave it to a friend. It was a nice size and I made offerings to this Buddha for many years in Los Angeles. In front of the Buddha I placed His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s photo. I remember I was so relieved that the price was affordable. But US$5 that time was still expensive for me but worth it I thought. But I was happy to have brought the Buddha home. Tsem Rinpoche

Love Rinpoche’s humour and charisma (as always) that comes across in this article and the picture accompanied. Best parts for me in the article are:
People: ”Why do you have hair?” Rinpoche: ”Because it grows.” LOL.
And the part about not hurting animals by consuming them. And how some nicer ghosts are scared of us. Oh no… Also love Rinpoche’s wish for people to be same on the outside but different (dharmawise) on the inside. _/\_

Nice post in the photo Rinpoche, u always make the different for us. The phase “one of the country’s most avant-garde spiritual leaders” very suitable for u. Our Guru pose and look is better that the magazine front page.

Thanks Rinpoche for the interview that make more peoples can connect to Rinpoche and Kechara.

I love how witty Rinpoche is! His quotes are short yet straightforward. One of my favorite part has to be when people asked Rinpoche why does Rinpoche have hair when He was modeling. “Because it grows.” So witty and profound! haha!
May everyone benefit from Rinpoche’s teachings.

    Thank you for sharing, Rinpoche.

  10. Davin on May 20, 2012 at 3:34 pm

Thank you to Esquire magazine. I like Rinpoche photo so much.. Rinpoche is cute in the picture. The question and answer that I like is people would ask Rinpoche why do he have hair and Rinpoche answer because it grows..
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this to us.

I always enjoy reading Rinpoche’s quotes and can’t help smiling or laughing at the same time.

It’s really cool of Rinpoche and I simply adores this hilarious yet interesting pose of his. Great job, Rinpoche!

    Dear Rinpoche ,
I showed the Esquire write up to some of my non-Kechara friends in the salon , and they think you are such a “funky” teacher , perfect for this generation !!!! Personally , I loved all the quotes . They were so point-blank on the issues . Also Rinpoche is so witty !!! Laughed a lot ! Thank you Rinpoche . Looking forward to Rinpoche doing more of such interviews with the media ,to spread the Dharma .

Dare to be yourself! Had always been the teaching of Rinpoche that stuck to me. Look at the photo, which Monk would dare to have such a picture taken.

This is it, the Lama for this modern world, courageous and different.

  20. Joe Ang on May 14, 2012 at 11:56 am

Nice interview, GREAT pictures. Though Rinpoche blogs about what he likes, and not what people expects. I find it’s what he likes that bring so many of us to read and learn from his blog. Rinpoche with great patience uses examples from the things he find interesting to share with us and allow us to learn in ways that are easy to absorb and understand. Like Madonna, we should never be stagnant. Keep up to the beat! No matter if you are young young or “still”, young…

  21. Deborah on May 14, 2012 at 9:51 am

I think Rinpoche’s picture should have been the cover. Super cute and who’d think a Lama was so approachable, down to earth and just so real!
hope there’ll be a follow up story soon.

  25. wt on May 13, 2012 at 3:02 pm

haha, like the picture very much, “Now you see me, now you don’t!”

Buddhism is the combination of art & science of living. Tsem Tulku Rinpoche brings it to all regardless of their religions in order to improve and enhance everyone’s life in a modern way.

From the sharings, we can also see that Rinpoche is very authentic and honest to his likes and don’t. Where can we find a monk who said he likes Madonnna? 🙂

Like this write up very much, especially with the soundbites from interviews and Esquire is also making extra effort to find Tsem Tulku Rinpoche’s video clips from you tube.

May more interviews on the way and spread the name of Rinpoche to more!

When I heard that Rinpoche granted Esquire an interview, I was really pleasantly surprised! In some way I was nervous how Esquire would present Rinpoche. I am really impressed how the interview came out.

The interview is simple and yet reveals to the readers who Rinpoche is. This article not only tells the world who Rinpoche is but it gives a new perception of a modern day Lama. In many ways, people have a certain fixed “old-fashion” view of Lamas, this article and how they have presented the contents is very modern. Refreshing. Most of all, attractive to the new people who are the readers of Esquire. Being featured with the other candidates also gives the impact of new and modern popular people.

Good feature! Thank you to Jon Chew who interviewed Rinpoche and also the Esquire editorial team!

  29. DR on May 12, 2012 at 11:21 pm

This is our Rinpoche all right! Always speaks the truth, not what he thinks others like to hear. Sometimes truth shocks our system but when it is a heartfelt advice, it moves the listener and the result is beneficial.

I salute Esquire magazine for the bold move in featuring Rinpoche. To me, it is an expression of your respect to your readers that they have depth and appreciate some words of wisdom.

I love the comments from non-Kecharian readers. It means they are connecting with dharma and Rinpoche. Sometimes I am apprehensive about which dharma talks to link friends, to make sure it suits them and their predispositions. But really, people connect quite easily either way.

  34. Uncle Eddie on May 12, 2012 at 12:08 pm

The interesting interveiw between Tsem Tulku Rinpoche and Esquire Magazine, was indeed full of frankness, honesty, excitement and meaningful comments, humorous as well at the end. Truly a most modern, understanding and well-realised Lama, Rinpoche made this interview simple and easy to understand. Perhaps, some of the most salient comments made by him which attracted me most were:- (1) His remark calling on people not to treat a spiritual Lama like a dating agency or a matching bureau. (2) not sticking with the choice of becoming an actor first, then a monk later like Steven Seagal did, but Rinpoche went ahead to follow the path of his old master to be a monk all life through without regret. (3) He dared to be different and not stuck with the herd of blogging what is expected of a buddhist monk’s blog, but something different, exciting and of great interest for all! On his care, attention and treatment of animals, Rinpoche’s love, feeling and incomparable compassion to them is universial and a common knowledge to all who knows him -“A saviour of beings”! Om mani padme hum.

  35. Victor Phang on May 12, 2012 at 10:32 am

Rinpoche’s picture really funny and different than any other monks’ serious posture when taking pictures. Even the way of publishing this interview also very different -point by point instead of paragraph by paragraph. I believe both the interview and picture can really attract young and busy working community. Very good approach to introduce Rinpoche, Buddhism, Dharma and Kechara to youth who is the key decision maker for the future growth of Buddhism.

So after this introduction, what’s next that we can do to bring them closer to Dharma? I always like to ask “what’s next?” to myself because this is the essential question to keep me going and growing 🙂

Thank you Rinpoche for the sharing and congratulation for the successful interview.
    Take very good care.
    With love,
    VP

  36. Chandra on May 12, 2012 at 5:35 am

The picture is so adorable. It’s almost like a cute attack, with due respect to Rinpoche. I feel Rinpoche’s messages are like a slap on our faces. A kind wake-up call. The quotes are like ‘I’m calling a spade a spade’! A-M-A-Z-I-N-G.

  37. bengkooi on May 12, 2012 at 4:45 am

I am very happy that this has come to fruition. The original email from Esquire requesting for an interview with Rinpoche seems like ages ago now, and Rinpoche agreeing to give the interview was a very pleasant surprise. I was one of the lucky few to be present during the interview and photoshoot, and reporter Jon Chew did a great job. The actual interview lasted for over 3 hours and the content was superb. Its a shame that there wasnt enough space to publish the whole interview, but perhaps Esquire will do a full feature on just Rinpoche next time 🙂

  38. Cynthia L on May 12, 2012 at 3:57 am

I think it means something for Esquire to want to interview Rinpoche! This is just one of the few for many more interviews and exposures in the medias to come!

Esquire has written the article in a manner which is easy to read, appeals to readers and on top of that presented Rinpoche’s videos and audio (in the website) which doesn’t appear to be forceful and hardsell while totally blend in with the whole article. It was very very clever. We should learn this sort of creative writing and structure from them.

I do hope that this article will be able to shed some light to the public who picked up a copy. May Rinpoche’s teachings are able to reach them in future.

  39. Don Buchwalter on May 12, 2012 at 3:54 am

What a wonderful article! It is so nice to see magazines of popular culture add a little depth to their pages. I am sure that many people will benefit from Rinpoche’s appearance!

  40. Sharon Saw on May 12, 2012 at 2:11 am

It’s fantastic that a classy magazine like Esquire wanted to interview Rinpoche. I thought it was great that Rinpoche was featured alongside luminaries like Stephen Hawking, Alec Baldwin, Ethan Hawke, Helen Mirren… Rinpoche was a spiritual person in the feature yet it is amazing that someone in robes fitted right in! It is Rinpoche’s refreshing, joyful and charismatic personality which lets him stand out from the crowd… even in such illustrious company!!

    • Mc on May 14, 2012 at 4:01 am

I couldn’t agree more with Sharon. Rinpoche appearing in Esquire, an international brand is really fantastic and I bet it has fired a lot of imagination. It is great how Rinpoche breaks the traditional mould and makes dharma actually fun. I love the thought provoking answers delivered with a lot of wit and candor.

  41. mayy on May 12, 2012 at 1:37 am

Rinpoche protrays the compassion side of him to benefit many who needs spiritual guidance and help. He is not here to look for fame for he forgoes all the pleasures and privacy that we chase after. Instead he has to endure all the pains and disappointments of his students and friends to continue to bring dharma and guide them.
He brings dharma in many different ways down to our level of understanding and practicality without changing our outlook but mind transformation. In fact, spirituality that appeals to everyone in many different levels in this modern age.

  42. Koh Hee Peng on May 12, 2012 at 1:32 am

When I was a model, people would ask me very interesting profound questions like, “Why do you have hair?” And I would give interesting and profound answers like, “Because it grows” – Can’t stop gigling reading this quote from the article (couple with the the imagination of Rinpoche’s facial expression):D

In his earlier life, Rinpoche was given a choice as whether to be ordained or to lead a normal life, of which it was predicted by Rinpoche’s guru that Rinpoche would achieve celebrity status should Rinpoche chose not to be ordained. Due to Rinpoche’s strong imprint in his past lives, Rinpoche has chosen to be be ordained in his early 20s. Guess what, 30 years later, Rinpoche has also achieved the celebrity status despite having ordained due to Rinpoche’s unerring compassion towards all beings.

that is very good ours rinpoche interview with international magazine.this is nice way to promote kechara i love it.

  50. Paris on May 11, 2012 at 10:26 pm

Hooooorah! A lovely piece – as much fun being in the interview proper as it was to read the article afterwards. I do especially love how they’ve called Rinpoche avant-garde… which I suppose he is!

This is exciting too, for it marks Rinpoche’s first public interview in a globally loved and respected magazine – yet another dynamic way Rinpoche brings his teachings out to people and places where you’d least expect to see spirituality. And the article (selection of quotes) reflects this perfectly – that joyous diversity, juxtapositions and dichotomies of Madonna / mantras, Hollywood / holiness, Dharma / disco.

I daresay Rinpoche makes a perfect example of a true Esquire man – real style, openness and on the pulse of anything, everything, anyone, everyone he meets.

  51. Ana Montero on May 11, 2012 at 9:47 pm

The article was so HOT! It was great, entertaining, inspiring… Kechara will grow and grow! I love the picture of Rinpoche hiding behind a big leaf. So cute!.

  52. Lim Han Nee on May 11, 2012 at 9:26 pm

Wow, Rinpoche, you really show the world that Buddhism and compassion can take on an ‘avant-garde’ look.

Kechara, through Rinpoche, will now hog the limelight. Why? Because its spiritual leader, is seen (by a leading magazine Esquire )as one of the most ‘avant-garde’ spiritual leaders of this country, who posts about Madonna ,food, UFO and the paranormal and Chinese horoscope on his blog, who wanted to become an actor but became a monk because it was his teacher’s instruction, who became a model for a short period to show his students that they could be whatever they wanted to be.

Buddha will appear to you in different form or any form that you didn’t expect, so do High Lama, they have no ego issue, no pride, no agenda, what they do is only benefiting people, how they can be on help to make you a better person. H.E.Tsem Tulke Rinpoche is the one that I know of, he is not someone who wanted fame, but for Rinpoche to be famous, it means he will lose out all privacy where everyone can have, But still, Rinpoche doesn’t mind to go to this extend, because his only agenda in life is very simple, to bring dharma to as many people as possible.

This feature of Rinpoche is awesome. I love it! Whilst reading the article, a few words popped into mind: Fun, Light, Casual, Jovial, Down-to-Earth, Different, Cool, Knowledgable and Amazing. I feel the feature portrays Rinpoche very well, it exudes the energy that Rinpoche leaves on everyone.

Best of all, I love Rinpoche’s photo!! Whilst all the other photos are so prim and proper, Rinpoche’s photo for the feature totally strikes a difference – even if you’re flipping through the magazine, it’ll make you pause on the page because the page is so bold, cheeky and cute! It never fails to make me smile.

Thank you Esquire magazine, for this wonderful feature. And thank you Rinpoche, for without you, there would be no feature.

    Love,
    Carmen

I really love all the quotes.

Rinpoche always relate the essence of the teaching in a very easy, fun and modern way for a lot of people to understand. Rinpoche is a real Lama that everyone can really feel the compassion from Rinpoche teaching and actions.

This article really shows the unique ways of how Rinpoche deliver Buddhism in a modern, fun, meaningful & beneficial.

  59. william on May 11, 2012 at 6:33 pm

Even though it is just one page, it reveals a lot about Rinpoche on who he is. He is different from the rest of the other monks because he uses real life situations to relate to the people and not stories from ages ago. He comes off as human in this article same like any of us, yet different in many many ways!

Thank you Rinpoche for revealing yourself to the world. Esquire, you have made the right choice!

  60. Andrew James Boon on May 11, 2012 at 6:29 pm

Brilliant article (both printed and online version). It really does sum up Rinpche’s style and method of delivering very pertinent and profound insights and Dharma. Truly a well deserving spot amongst the other personae.

Perhaps a solo next!!! Thank you Esquire!

  61. su an on May 11, 2012 at 6:08 pm

“I attract people because I think different. Sounds like an Apple ad, but I do.”

Rinpoche has been showing the world that Buddhism is adaptive, dynamic, contemporary, it is not burning incense and worshipping a statue and sitting in a cave. Rinpoche shows that Buddhists are not hermits and boring inert people who cannot do this cannot do that, cannot joke, cannot act cute, cannot be cheeky… I’m sure the Esquire readers would really enjoy this article and have their minds teased about their perception of Buddhism and Buddhist monks =D

  62. Wan on May 11, 2012 at 5:26 pm

i love Rinpoche quotes in Esquire Magazine and of course a humor photo of Rinpoche too.. Its a very good to read quotes and listen the VDO together.. thank to Esquire for this option.

Rinpoche quotes show us of how Dharma can be fun and entertain as the same time Rinpoche take Dharma practice seriously..

  63. KH Ng on May 11, 2012 at 4:47 pm

This is a sign that Rinpoche and what he represents is gaining acceptance in today’s world. Rinpoche and Kechara can bring Dharma to today’s world.

  64. Lai on May 11, 2012 at 4:40 pm

Rinpoche teaching is very interesting and funny and close to our daily life. I used to think Dhama teaching is serious and boring. Rinpoche show us spirituality can be fun!

  65. Girlie on May 11, 2012 at 4:36 pm

    Look – Rinpoche playing peek-a-boo with the photographer. That’s Rinpoche’s not-so-serious side.

  66. Elena on May 11, 2012 at 3:38 pm

Aiyoh I love this interview, because it captures Rinpoche so well. Rinpoche is fun, playful, youthful, extremely intelligent, witty and above all, kind. Actually, the article is a really good reflection of how compassionate our lamas are – they will manifest any kind of behaviour to attract us to the Dharma. After all, this is what will appeal to Esquire’s readers, who are not the goody-goody crowd…they wouldn’t be so impressed by a monk on a high throne going, “Ommmmmmm” but they will like a monk who is peeking from behind a tree hehehe

  67. joey wong on May 11, 2012 at 3:27 pm

I love this article so much!! It really shows and proves to people that spirituality dosent have to be boring!! Thank you Rinpoche again!

  68. patsy on May 11, 2012 at 3:06 pm

Rinpoche’s quotes are so thought provoking and practical. Rinpoche’s approached to dharma is practical, down to earth, logical and inspiring. It can reach out to the young and old generation.

    Nice photo……Rinpoche looks very cute!

Thank you Esquire for doing a great job!

  69. JG on May 11, 2012 at 2:42 pm

Rinpoche is so cute in this pic. And i like this ,” I wanted to bring it out to contemporary people. I wanted people to look exactly as they look, but be different on the inside. ” & ” “Take a real good look. Do I look like a dating agency?” hahaha…

Shelter from the rain of problems ? People got problems, find dharma ; People find dharma because got problems ? Most people look externally for the source of their problems..After we go deeper in this pathway, We feel extraordinarily fortunate to have the circumstances for Dharma … Not only open our eyes to all the things that are going right in our lives, but … our problems enable us to become better people and find our inner strength.

  70. Wan Wai Meng on May 11, 2012 at 2:38 pm

Love the soundbites and all the videos links that is inclusive. An articles about Rinpoche’s work is simply not enough, his work is so so vast and encompassing, there are so many dimensions to what Rinpoche represents to all the people in the world!

Tsem Rinpoche is such a modern lama, how he delilvers Buddha in such creative, modern, humorous way for us to understand easily… I dare he is the one monk I came across with such quality. How fortunate we are to be his students in this very life time. Now the world is watching, it’s infectious!!!

This is just incredible. I love every single quote of Rinpoche’s because they are so thought-provoking and it gives insight towards improving ourselves in every sense of the word. I like the fact that he is so worldly and yet has a lot of wisdom to share. That is really a rare quality in a holy man these days. I will buy my very first copy of Esquire very soon.

Buddhism is not about hiding in a cave and just to meditation It is about transforming our mind. Malaysia is a country which is considered a barbaric country when it comes to Buddhism, because most of the people here just pray to get good luck, good business, a relationship, etc.

Rinpoche brings the “seriousness” of Buddhism to us in a fun and “easy-to-absorb” way. Don’t miss out his talks, and don’t forget to transform our mind!!

  78. MayOng on May 11, 2012 at 12:39 pm

    • Shin on May 12, 2012 at 2:45 am

Beautiful paintings explaining about the life of Lama Tsongkapa. That’s great sharing more readers will get to know and understand Lama Tsongkapa the great Tibetan Buddhist monk, philosopher and tantric yogi. Reading his brief biography and his great life story in 15 beautiful and meaningful paintings. Fortunate to practice the Guru Yoga of Lama Tsongkhapa as it is a short, profound and concise practice which has vast, innumerable benefits. This very powerful, yet accessible practice as it does not require initiation or empowerment. Looking at those beautiful thangka as in this blog is a blessing.

Inspiring teachings from Pabongka Rinpoche. Taking refuge in Tibetan Buddhism is the foundation of all Buddhist practice, marking the entrance to the path by committing to the Three Jewels . It is a profound and active process of seeking protection from suffering by consciously adopting a Buddhist direction in life. The act of going for refuge marks the point where we decides to take the Dharma as the primary guide to the conduct in one’s life. Taking refuge is a form of aspiration, leading us a life with the Triple Gem at its core.
Thank you Rinpoche for this profound teachings.

From ancient times to the colonial era courtesans are deeply rooted in the historical fabric of India. Their culture refers to the historical role of high-class, educated female entertainers in societies. These women held significant cultural and social influence, acting as patrons of the arts. They are known for exceptional skills in classical music, dance and poetry. It was during the British colonial rule and the rise of modern social values , these cultures seems to decline. Many women nowadays began to receive equal recognition, appreciation, and stature been noticed. And yet there is still in some place women were seconded in some societies. When it comes to mind training and the development of compassion and wisdom, gender does not matter. In Buddhism, there’s no discrimination toward women, both men and women are equal. It has proven that many women have gained full enlightenment in a female body.
Thank you Rinpoche for this inspiring sharing.

Mount Wutai is a sacred Buddhist mountain. The cultural landscape is home to forty-one monasteries. Its central area is surrounded by a cluster of flat-topped peaks or mesas roughly corresponding to the cardinal directions. Significance of Mount Wutai is one of the Four Sacred Mountains in Chinese Buddhism. Each of the mountains is viewed as the bodhimaṇḍa of one of the four great bodhisattvas. Wu Tai San is the home of the Bodhisattva of wisdom Manjushri. Beautiful architectural temples have been built since from the 1st century AD to the early 20th century. The temples are inseparable from their mountain landscape. Those monasteries of Mount Wutai remain an important repository of Buddhist culture. Every year it has attract thousands of pilgrims from across a wide part of Asia. Mount Wutai is an exceptional testimony to the cultural tradition of religious mountains that are developed with monasteries. The temples demonstrate a long history of construction and reconstruction. Wutai Shan is worth visiting for its rich Buddhist culture, historical temples, and stunning natural scenery. Visitors can experience a spiritual atmosphere, see numerous temples. I am fortunate joining Kechara group visiting these Holy places at Wu tai Shan years back, witnessing the beauty of the mountain landscape, even though that time some areas still be under construction and can be crowded. Beyond its cultural sites, the mountain offers impressive natural scenery with lush greenery, mountain streams, and panoramic views.
Thank you Rinpoche for this sharing as it reminds me of my pilgrimage trip.

The right attitude when receiving offerings is one of gratitude, humility, and joy, recognizing the act as an expression of the giver’s generosity and a means to fulfil their spiritual path. It is important to accept gifts graciously, as refusing them can be impolite or seen as rejecting someone’s kindness. Appreciate the giver’s generosity and understand that the offering represents a sacrifice of their own resources. Rejoice in the giver’s generosity: Be happy for the giver’s spiritual practice of making the offering, which helps them to reduce their own attachments to material possessions. In Buddhism, receiving offerings requires an attitude of rejoicing in the giver’s generosity, understanding the offering as a practice for the donor, and a commitment to use it to benefit others. Recipients should have a compassionate and selfless motivation, viewing the act as a mutual opportunity for generosity and a way to help the giver reduce their attachments. Well using the offering wisely to further spiritual practice and the benefit of all sentient beings. We encouraged to make offerings to the Three Jewels but even more so, we are encouraged to make offerings to our gurus, considered the most precious of all. A precise teachings from this post.
Thank you Rinpoche and Khong Jean Ai.

Offering butter lamps is a Buddhist practice symbolizing wisdom dispelling ignorance. Many benefits when we offer butter lamps such as accumulating merit, purifying negativity, achieving spiritual clarity, and receiving blessings for wealth and well-being. The act is a powerful act of devotion, helps guide the deceased, and is used to focus one’s mind for meditation. When we practices with correct motivation it lead us to greater wisdom, clarity of mind, and the ability to discern virtue from non-virtue. The ultimate goal is to use this practice as a step toward enlightenment and liberation from suffering. The flame of the lamp symbolizes wisdom, and lighting it represents the removal of the darkness of ignorance and confusion. Awesome …offering butter lamps is seen as a way to generate good karma and merit for oneself and others. As this light offerings brings happiness, liberation from suffering, enlightenment, and the ability to help others as well.
Thank you Rinpoche for this sharing. with the detailed explanation of why we do butter lamps. A profound teachings.

Found this old post , an example shown to us how compassionate Rinpoche was, helping those vendors on the streets . No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted. Be kind whenever possible we could do to help those in need. It is always possible. In the second video showing how much care Rinpoche serving foods to workers and sharing, explaining with them about Dharma. Rinpoche kindness in action has inspired us to be kind and helping those who might fighting a hard battle. Everywhere we go, leave a glitter trail of kindness behind us if possible..

Pilgrimage is important in Buddhism because it deepens spiritual understanding, fosters a connection to the Buddha’s life and teachings. It also provides us the opportunities for personal transformation. It helps practitioners to purify negative karma, cultivate positive merit, and strengthen their devotion to the Three Jewels. Visiting sacred sites can also inspire virtuous conduct and a sense of urgency in practicing the faith. Some places of pilgrimage have powerful energy which can bring our mind to present moment. Major sites of Buddhist pilgrimage are often found in northern India in places associated with the Buddha’s life, teaching and enlightenment. Going on a pilgrimage gives us a chance to step away from the chaos of our schedules.
Reading this article again reminds me of my pilgrimage to Nepal years back,. It’s a once life time trip but I am glad made it twice.
It’s a great memories for Pastor David and Paul who brought their parents om pilgrimage to India and Nepal. Awesome …they embarked on a spiritual journey in India and Nepal visited sacred temples, ancient Buddhist sites and Serpom Monastery.

The Nature of the mind is a central concept across various philosophical traditions, It generally refers to the mind’s intrinsic characteristics. As it believed to encompass awareness, purity, and a capacity for both peace and agitation. Most spiritual traditions offer some combination of four practices for those who would seek to know their true nature. We could self-transform through training our mind. When we face difficult situations and things go poorly in our lives, if we’re able to change our attitudes toward them, we’ll be able to transform these experiences into ones that will further our spiritual progress. A profound teachings indeed for us to understand more about the true nature of our minds and how we can transform our minds through sincerely practicing.

The Unknown

The Known and unknown are both feared,
Known is being comfortable and stagnant,
The unknown may be growth and opportunities,
One shall never know if one fears the unknown more than the known.
Who says the unknown would be worse than the known?
But then again, the unknown is sometimes worse than the known. In the end nothing is known unless we endeavour,
So go pursue all the way with the unknown,
because all unknown with familiarity becomes the known.
~Tsem Rinpoche

What the meat industry figured out is that you don't need healthy animals to make a profit.
Sick animals are more profitable... farms calculate how close to death they can keep animals without killing them. That's the business model. How quickly they can be made to grow, how tightly they can be packed, how much or how little can they eat, how sick they can get without dying... We live in a world in which it's conventional to treat an animal like a block of wood. ~ Jonathan Safran Foer

Inspired by Kin Hoe's (Ipoh) and Sam's (Kuantan) updates, here... introducing our No. 1 members, Mr. Teo and Aunt Betty. They are always early for preparation, cleaning, and arranging. Bottom pic is Hue & Mr. Loh. They are sharing and exchanging views on ritual practices that support spiritual practices before puja. KPSG by Jacinta.

Tormas are regularly being changed. It's solely the commitments from one of our dedicated members, Choong Soon Heng. Without him, we would not have gathered an abundance of merits. Thanks! Kechara Penang Study Group by Jacinta.

It's been a while since our last update. When KFR was busy organising, serving & helping visiting monks together with their chunks of activities in Bentong, back here in Penang, our small but sturdy Penang Study Group has been consistently having their weekly Dorje Shugden Puja @ every Saturday at 3 pm. Here's one update, completed on 6th September 2025. Kechara Penang Study Group by Jacinta.
