Chinese Horoscopes

Aug 18, 2013 | Views: 14,788

Chinese Horoscopes may not have any religious basis. However, if it’s based on 5,000 years worth of human observation, similar trends can be found. It is the culmination of 5,000 years of observation by the ancient Chinese scholars to culminate into the analysis of each sign. Some are very accurate. Observation is the best way to gather information.

The Chinese Lunar horoscope is different from the  Western zodiac. The year you are born in isn’t the only thing taken into consideration, but also the month you were born, the time of your birth and your Western zodiac sign.

It is always interesting and entertaining to read about yourself, your good points and your horoscoped weaknesses. I guess knowing more about yourself will help you to work on what you need to work on.  It is nice to know who you can work, partner, and be friends with… also who you would find some conflict with perhaps. Of course getting along and not getting along ultimately relies on you. But it is interesting to see who you have ‘natural’ conflicts with if no efforts were made towards the relationship. It is also interesting to share with friends personality traits of people you would like to understand more about. It is always nice to have a some lead in order to find a beginning in our relations with others.

I thought this section on horoscopes would keep you coming back for further contemplations and it’s always interesting to find out more about others. Horoscopes should not be used as a weapon or be fixed. Whatever personalities are described of each sign has many mitigating factors and everything can be changed or overridden with patience, kindness, understanding and good old fashioned sincerity for others. Do not think whatever a horoscope says is fixed or permanent. It is a general guide to start from somewhere but don’t be stuck where it is… nothing is stagnant.  For example Snakes do not get along with Boars according to the horoscopes… But they can get along if they work at it. Horoscopes help you find ahead of time what we need to be aware of with other I guess.

Do take a look below to see which animal sign you are… It will lead to interesting discussions, ideas, and introspection’s. Have fun and enjoy. I put it here for my blog friends to enjoy… so please enjoy and share with others!!!

I keep coming back to this chart and its quite incredible how relevant most of the information is in here. It really sums up someone rather well… It gives an insight into why someone is the way they are and it is all due to the time they were born.

Could the time one is born be the workings of Karma as well? It surely must be as highly attained masters have total control over their rebirth, they could in fact choose the time/year they are born into… simple logic. Or do they by sheer workings of karma are born into such times based on their merits… hhmmmm… I wonder?

Thank you for the sharing Rinpoche. The Chinese horoscopes did highlight some of my characteristic. But I would take it to be a strong reminder to myself to be more mindful in my thoughts and action when I am dealing with others.Every action there would be a reaction. If I would be kind to others then reaction would be similar.I the context of my horoscope,my own ego and arrogance would be my biggest challenge to sub due .I would use the knowledge of the dharma to assist my self to follow the right path to overcome the so called inner nature of the Chinese horoscopes.

Horoscope is through 5000 years of observation and being set with the closest possibilities of each and every character, it is the same as how Buddha observe and learn from the human life’s cycle and gain realization, I would say Horoscope is quite accurate when we live our life accordingly but it still does not work on every single human being, because of different background and situation.

I used to have friend who are very obsessed about horoscope, they would look at horoscope in the morning almost on a daily basis, when there is days that they missed out the horoscope, they will feel very uneasy for the day and trying to reduce their activity almost to the minimum. there is so much of insecurity in their life. Horoscope may be accurate in certain way, it actually meant as a guidance for us and not for us to live in it.

If a person who knows to utilize horoscope, they should learn about their ‘potential’ weaknesses and to work on the improvement, not ignore it and hope for miracle. We reap our own created karma, no one horoscope can help us to avoid our karma, we still have to work our way through for any and every situation arises.

Dear Rinpoche thank you for sharing this information . I used to like to read about my fortune during beginning of every year that was those day before I meet the dharma, after knowing the dharma I think the important thing is our mind how our mind react to sudden situation with dharma even is a negative situation we can use dharma to resolve our problem. As a guide I think is good to know someone horoscope so that we can talk to them more easily.

  8. Cliff on Aug 24, 2013 at 9:00 pm

I don’t really know how much i can trust or believe in Chinese Horoscopes although it may most of the time be quite accucrate, we should still have to see it as a scientific fact that it is true because it has gone through 5000 years of observations so it should count for something i think haha. I am a snake and after reading through the description of the strength and weakness i do agree and disagree in certain areas but maybe in denial or over confident to certain descriptions. But it is definitely very entertaining and fun to read Chinese Horoscopes. One fact i strongly agree with is that snakes find it very difficult to have trust in others which has to be earned but can be easily lost when lied to, deceived or betrayed. I find it very hard to trust people and am quick to be judgemental, i hope i would be able to change and improve one of these personality traits of mine. Thank you for sharing this with me Rinpoche, i found it very interesting to read.

  9. wansan on Aug 23, 2013 at 4:25 pm

I’m always interested in reading my own horoscope and zodiac. Every morning I will flip over my Star Newspaper to the part where the Horoscope is and read them. Of course like what Rinpoche says, “Horoscopes should not be used as a weapon or be fixed. Whatever personalities are described of each sign has many mitigating factors and everything can be changed or overridden with patience, kindness, understanding and good old fashioned sincerity for others.” I use them as a guideline of the day so that I know ‘who’ or ‘what’ to avoid/pay more attention to. Thank You Rinpoche
    for sharing this.

Dear Rinpoche, I am a tiger, hear me roar! Hehe
Some traits do stand true! And I even looked up the signs of my friends and family and it describe their nature well. 🙂

Sometimes if we know how certain people are, we can learn deliver our speeches and actions in a skillful manner.. It doesn’t mean that this is the manual for life to dictate how a certain horoscope should be. It is merely a guideline to learn more abt ourselves and the people around us so that we can communicate better to have a better relationship. 🙂

    Thnk you for sharing, Rinpoche!

  12. tenzin llhamo on Aug 19, 2013 at 10:51 pm

Thank you Rinpoche for sharing the above. As mentioned, above are based on years of observation and shouldnt let it control who we really are. Although it might say that certain signs are not compatible but if we work towards it, we can definitely work well with each other and people around us. I dont actually believe in these signs but no harm reading about it and get some info here and there.

  13. Grace Leu(KHJB) on Aug 19, 2013 at 8:52 pm

It was interesting to know our behaviour under chinese horoscope. But of course it was a guidance only, , everyone still different characters even though under same group.btw, I m a dragon.

  14. David Lai on Aug 19, 2013 at 8:28 pm

I love Chinese horoscopes because like many other ancient Chinese esoteric knowledge, I find them to be accurate and strangely compelling. However, I am not really a fan of the predictive quality of Chinese horoscope but I do find that psychological aspect very interesting. I think the account on my horoscope was pretty accurate with a few minor misses.

I think this observational knowledge makes for an accurate description of the personalities of each of the zodiac sign. I believe that this is a good guide for people and can be somewhat Dharmic is the self-reflection and helps us to apply the right remedies to counter character flaws and weaknesses. It would definitely help us to work or get along with certain characters as well. Ultimately, the Dharma is the best Zodiac for people. It just needs us to apply it and experience the rewards of transformation.

Dear Rinpoche, I’m a rabbit, my sister is an ox, my father is a dragon and my mother is a horse. I don’t know much about Chinese Horoscopes but I do know that if you are 6years apart than another person, then your relationship between each other wouldn’t be good.

  18. tsemtulku on Sep 5, 2011 at 6:54 am

The element you are born into has tremendous effect on your personality. A fire snake would be more aggressive than those born under a water snake. Water snakes are more quiet and not as aggressive but very versatile. Metal snakes are more stubborn or stuck on ideas as oppose to a fire snake. Fire snakes can be very vengeful where as a wood snake is more forgiving. Elements are important to understand and how it affects you. Take a read and learn up about yourself. Like our guru said, “Horoscopes are a general overveiw, but everything can be changed, so can karma also.” It all depends on whether the person has a strong determination and desire to overcome the undesirable predictions to make the necessary changes. Even the culmination of human observations centered on their trends of longtime behavioural traits can never be as impregnable as that of karma. HOWEVER, the strong belief on horoscope reading is no more centered on the chinese and asian nationals only. Many non-chinese nationals from the americans and european blocks have joined in the the astrological wagon, to propel the futuristic forecast into a reality for a good future. Every living being from the time of their birth wants happiness and not sufferings. It is therefore important to discover what will bring about the greatest degree of happiness depending upon their own efforts and not on the forecast of the horoscopes.

When I just born, my parents already used Chinese horoscope to identify my character which I hated they do like this. After I had growth up, I started read the horoscope, ya sometime it is quite accurate. But, as a reference or self-reflection is good, to me. Especially the main character is quite accurate!!!I like the part “How to work with…” very useful, hehe…!!!In Chinese we called 知己知彼,百战百胜也!

    • Frederick Law on Aug 25, 2011 at 5:20 pm

i agree, in chinese horoscope, character wise it is 90% accurate, but still the environment and people they mingle with also plays a part in shaping their character, so it is mostly like a guide to scan through the principal of the nature.

  21. Frederick Law on Aug 25, 2011 at 12:04 am

thank you for sharing the horoscope with us Rinpoche. i must say i was an avid believer in horoscope especially when it comes to the chinese animal zodiac during every chinese new year, i was so eager to know what is the luck of my zodiac sign on the coming new year, i am born in the year of Dog. most of the time what the horoscope predicted might be accurate, but most of the time its not, but still delusions clouded me, and i keep on reading for so many years, and still believing in the prediction.

it is when i learn Dharma, and understand about the cause and effect of Karma, and from Dearest Rinpoche explanation here, i started to see how the luck of one person does not really depends on the horoscope foretold, for horoscope is just a guide and prediction, but it is us who determine how the course of our life should be, even we can override the negative things through applying dharma. for it is due to our low minded thinking and the ignorance of karma that we blame luck, surrounding and ppl on on our misfortune.

Thank You again Rinpoche for sharing this wonderful article with us, for many to learn more about other zodiac sign, and in the same time allowing us to understand we can override what is negative in horoscope fortune telling.

i wish Rinpoche good health and long life. with folded hands.

  22. Tsem Rinpoche on Aug 24, 2011 at 8:16 pm

Horoscopes are a general overview, but everything can be changed. Karma is not solid and permanent hence, neither are the horoscopes. If we do nothing, then what the horoscopes can reflect what is happening with us…but If we do something about it we can override everything in horoscopes and samsara.

  23. patsy on Aug 24, 2011 at 6:34 pm

Even though I do not have an interest in horoscope, out of curiosity I check out my sign and a few of my family members and find that it is quiet accurate.

  24. Steve Tobias on Aug 24, 2011 at 10:06 am

This is very interesting, looked up myself (Dog) and a few other people and it’s pretty accurate.

I had someone close to me who was very into astrology. I found it frustrating because often times it made her very fearful and anxious, sort of defeatist, like things are a certain way and one can’t change them or act. It seemed to contradict karma, and cause negative results.

If astrology and horoscopes are accurate then maybe we have the karma to be born under a certain sign at a certain time — it would make a lot of sense.

  25. Janice Kwok on Aug 24, 2011 at 8:28 am

Towards the end and beginning of each year, i wld start veering myself to the section on horoscopes, both western and the chinese, to read and check on what is store for me for the year..really kiasu…hahahha. Having started now on Dharma, it is interesting to read it, not becos, the prophecies/projections by those authors will be more real but you start to think why did i become so uptight when i used to deal with those horoscope signs that are said to be less compatible with me? Thank you Rinpoche for starting this section to teach us who have heavy negative karma to learn how to contemplate and change our minds and behaviour towards others.

This horoscope is quite different because it is written by an enlightened beings and not ordinary human beings.it might refer to anyone of you.hehehe.

  28. Nicholas on Aug 23, 2011 at 7:10 pm

To be frank I didn’t really follow much on horoscope.
Use to think that attitude and behaviors influences by family, environment and friends. Not even bother to analyze or want to know peoples character as just so ignorance and selfish.

But after learning about compassion (which is still learning) we need to understand and even have to be more mindful about people personality.

Not to criticize but knowing how to work with them. As Rinpoche mentioned the personalities can be changed with patience, kindness & sincerity. By knowing our shortfall and we recognize it, it’s time to work on it for better.

    Thanks Rinpoche for blogging this.
A lot of people said it is so true to them. Me too. Hehehe…..

  29. Su Ming on Aug 23, 2011 at 5:43 pm

Horoscope and Zodiac Signs used to be my favourite topic to read beginning of every year. I used to have many books by various author. It was like my bible….ie will I be rich? will my career be successful? who and what to avoid?, which animal sign should I avoid or be friends with? and etc..hehehehe.

But after knowing dharma I realised that it is not the signs or animal that you were born under which mold us but the karma (good and bad) which is the driving force of who we are and MOST IMPORTANTLY how we can change things around for the better.

  30. VC on Aug 23, 2011 at 2:09 pm

Chinese horoscope is written by human.Human make mistakes and not God.Our life is fixed at birth.Human beings is watch by ’28 constellations heavenly beings’ up in the heaven monitoring each and every human beings deeds.i am not sure which heavenly beings responsible to fixed human life at birth or it is just follow some causal laws.It is written in some of buddhism books. So why bother horoscope if there is a religion to follow.I guess the heavenly beings will send their heavenly retinue or sages such as Sakyamuni Buddhas down to earth to save and liberate humanity when the time is right.

  31. henry ooi on Aug 23, 2011 at 12:37 pm

Even though Chinese read and some rely on Chinese horoscopes there are also people from different Western countries who do. But as Rinpoche writes here these horoscopes do not mean that they are 100% accurate as each individual has his/her own mind. They are a good guide and I agree one should not get caught up in them thinking that a person’s characteristics according to the Chinese horoscopes are fixed and that he/she cannot change.

Venerable Ajahn Chah was a Thai Buddhist teacher of the Buddhadhamma and a founder of two major monasteries in the Thai Forest Tradition. Well respected and loved as a man of great wisdom, he was also instrumental in establishing Theravada Buddhism in the West. Interesting life story, how he chose to leave the settled monastic life and became a wandering ascetic. Walking across Thailand, lived in forests, caves and cremation grounds while learning from the meditation monks of the Forest of various monasteries. He wandered through the countryside in quest of quiet and secluded places for developing meditation. He even lived in tiger and cobra infested jungles, using reflections on death to penetrate to the true meaning of life. After years of wandering, Venerable Ajahn Chah established a monastery where he taught simple, practice-based form of meditation, and attracted a numerous of students including western foreigners. He was one of the greatest Dhamma teachers of the modern era. His wise teachings have continued to guide thousands of people along the path of Dharma. Venerable Ajahn Chah’s teachings of the Thai Forest Tradition gradually spread across all over the world. Several of Ajahn Chah’s Western students have since established monasteries throughout the world. Just in Thailand itself, there are more than 300 branch monasteries in Ajahn Chah’s tradition. Ven erable Ajahn Chah used his ill health as a teaching point, emphasizing that it was a living example of the impermanence of all things and reminded people to endeavour to find a true refuge within themselves. Wonderful blog written on the practice of Kalarupa for us to understand better. As an emanation of Manjushri, Kalarupa’s practice helps us to destroy ignorance and to develop wisdom overcoming our anger and suffering . Awesome Kalarupa manifested in multiple forms to help sentient beings who personifies enlightenment by the conquest of anger. Kalarupa also regard as one of the three main Dharma protectors of the Gelugpa is extremely fierce and ugly, and tames all kinds of spiritual ugliness. The fierceness of his iconography teaches us to remind ourselves that all the causes and effects of anger arising from ignorance are dreadful and distorted.
Thank you Rinpoche and Pastor Antionette for this detailed sharing,

Nepal is a very spiritual country, having a huge Dorje Shugden mural in Kathmandu, is indeed a big achievement for Kechara. Located on Charkhal Road in Dilli Bazaar, the mural can be found midway between our two Dorje Shugden chapels which are in Putalisadak and Chabahil. It is also very close to one of Kathmandu’s largest shopping malls. Many locals , tourist will be able to connect them to a powerful deity that is so closely associated with their culture. Well the mural not only beautiful but also full of symbolism and everyone merely by seeing it is blessed. Thanks to those talented artists and generous sponsors making it a success.
Thank you Rinpoche for this sharing.

All the art of living lies in a fine mingling of letting go and holding on. Letting go helps us to live in a more peaceful state of mind and helps restore our balance. A reminder for us all to go of attachment and meditating on impermanence and emptiness. We are to relinquish the domination of our ego and its habits to transform ourselves. A great reminder not to waste our previous life.
Quoted Ceasing to do evil, Cultivating the good, Purifying the heart .
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing such a meaningful teachings with folded hands.

Winning the lottery was part of my dreams, I tried so hard to win big but all to no avail, until I came across Dr Lucas online who made my dreams come through and made me win 10 million dollars. I was a logistics manager who lives in Lancaster, S.C. and works about an hour’s drive away, in Charlotte, N.C., I stopped at a store to buy a scratch-off lottery ticket during my lunch break, because Dr Lucas gave me all the assurance that the numbers are not going to fail after I did all he asked me to do. Dr lucas is a powerful Dr that is on a mission to eradicate poverty from people’s lives and i have confirmed that by winning $10 million with the numbers he provided for me, it is my promise to tell the world about my experience with Dr Lucas and that’s what I’m doing now, you can win the lottery fast with the help of Dr Lucas he is tested and trusted Email: Drlucasspelltemple@gmail. com or WhatsApp +234 904 794 3567 he will help you.

We are members of the Buddhist Temple in Taman Desa Jaya, Kepong, Kuala Lumpur and we have been issued membership by the president (DATUK YIP KUM FOOK), we are very sad because we are the foundation of this Temple

Now we can know who is always messing with people, and he always cheats money and women, he even uses Buddhism to find money.

Also, need to be careful with his brother-in-law (Simon Low Kok Meng) because he is a spy (CID) for DATUK YIP KUM FOOK and we will write some letters to AGONG SULTAN IBRAHIM IBN ALMARHUM SULTAN ISKANDAR as soon as possible.

The matriarchal cultures of the grandmothers have specific symbolism of animism shamanism, such as the horse, especially the blue horse, and the deer. These are two main symbols of a shaman woman and you can find them in many cultural folk lore, especially the Russian, Slavic, Siberian, Nordic, Finland, and Norway. It’s nice to see the Matriarchal Shaman Animism diety represented in Chinese.

An inspiring act of a selfless Lama feeding strays whether its night or day. Truly an example for us all to feed those lonely strays . Yes I do agree compassion starts with feeding strays. Reading this blog again to refresh myself to do more. Strays animals generally lead a life of poor welfare on the street. Feeding strays is a compassionate act.
Thank you Rinpoche and Anila for this sharing.

H E Tsem Rinpoche’s Sungbum project aim to preserve the teachings and practices that have been passed from teacher to disciple in an unbroken line beginning with Lama Tsongkhapa himself . History has taught us the importance of preserving Buddha’s stainless teachings. Its important to preserve and safeguard the Buddhist tradition for future generations.

Demons are disembodied spirits, supernatural being or spirit and unseen beings. We know they do exist and I believe they do. They have no physical form to them whatsoever. Demons do definitely exist. They are intelligent beings who are evil malicious spirits and are all dangerous entities. Valak is not to be summoned capriciously by anyone as they are dangerous beings when we invoke them having to face a heavy consequence. There are spiritual practices that we can ask for help a ritual of the wrathful Manjushri in the form of Trakze. Having a doing the practice daily without fail, consistently, as this Trakze practice has been proven to be efficacious to break the hold the Valak and other spirits. All thanks to our Guru bringing this practice to Kechara Forest Retreat, Bentong Malaysia.
Thank you Rinpoche for this wonderful sharing for us to understand better.

Wow ,reading all these powerful quotes had me realised much better of giving even I have little. May H E Tsem Rinpoche’s sincere advice to reach the far shore of liberation to everyone reading this blog. The most truly generous people are those who give silently without asking any in return. There is no exercise better than reaching and lifting people up. A kind gesture can reach a wound that only compassion can heal. Well creating and lighting for others we naturally light our own way. Helping others especially those unfortunate ones, make us feel more positive about our own circumstances.
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing all these powerful quotes.

Lama Tsongkhapa was an influential Tibetan Buddhist monk, philosopher and tantric yogi, whose activities led to the formation of the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism . Lama Tsongkhapa was hailed as the second Buddha by contemporary Buddhist masters of his time. Famous for reviving Buddhism in Tibet and revered for elevating the Dharma to all its present glory. Hence having a 12 ft Lama Tsongkhapa Statue at new Kechara Gompa (Prayer Hall) is indeed a blessing. Its truly beautiful. Merely by looking at it is a blessing .
Thank you Rinpoche and team effort making it possible.

The Unknown

The Known and unknown are both feared,
Known is being comfortable and stagnant,
The unknown may be growth and opportunities,
One shall never know if one fears the unknown more than the known.
Who says the unknown would be worse than the known?
But then again, the unknown is sometimes worse than the known. In the end nothing is known unless we endeavour,
So go pursue all the way with the unknown,
because all unknown with familiarity becomes the known.
~Tsem Rinpoche

What the meat industry figured out is that you don't need healthy animals to make a profit.
Sick animals are more profitable... farms calculate how close to death they can keep animals without killing them. That's the business model. How quickly they can be made to grow, how tightly they can be packed, how much or how little can they eat, how sick they can get without dying... We live in a world in which it's conventional to treat an animal like a block of wood. ~ Jonathan Safran Foer

He shared that he truly believes that Dorje Shugden and Rinpoche always there guiding him. He shared how sometimes DS will give him hints to avert troubles ahead or to alert him when he 'misbehaved'. Hope many will come to know more about this powerful Dharma Protector, Dorje Shugden aka DS. Having Dorje Shugden is like having a powerful ally that will protect us day and night.
