Save the Earth through Kechara Earth Project
“Save the Earth Now!” is the slogan for Kechara Earth Project (KEP), and everything that they do revolves around it…
As a Kechara division that is keen to bring awareness to the preservation of the environment, KEP has been carrying out various recycling activities and awareness campaigns.
KEP was formed on 25 April 2010 by a student of mine, Wai Meng. He started this initiative as he cares about the environment, and strongly believes that we should be more aware of our actions as they have a great effect in the long-run.
The main activity that KEP does is collecting recyclables every 2nd Sunday of the month. When they first started out, recyclables were collected from the offices around SunwayMas. Now, their services have extended to all over the Klang Valley! About 1-2 tonnes of recyclables are gathered every month.
Besides these monthly recycling initiatives, Wai Meng and a handful of volunteers have been actively participating in all major Kechara events, such as the Mooncake festival, Kechara Gompa opening etc. They make sure that the recyclable trash is collected. It’s because of them that Kechara events are turning out neater and more eco-friendly!
The response of the general public has been very positive so far. People are willingly giving their recyclables, and are even prepared to assist KEP to separate and classify the recyclable items!
For the past few days, KEP has been holding their first awareness campaign outside Kechara. From 15-17 April 2011, they will be at the Smart Kids trade show at Putra World Trade Center (PWTC).
In collaboration with Manjushri Kids Class (MKC), KSK and KAS, KEP has taken their first step in their campaign to bring their cause to a wider audience. There were several activities offered at the KEP booth and it has attracted people of all ages! The public participated in book mark designing, photo frame designing and bag painting… they could also learn about environmentally-friendly habits while they’re at it too!
Wai Meng is leading the team of volunteers at PWTC… and so far the response from the crowd has been very good and many people are enjoying themselves!
KEP is a wonderful project. It is a great way to show how much we care about the people around us by keeping the environment clean, just like how a parent keeps the house clean and tidy for the comfort of their children. Although there’s nothing glamorous about picking up trash, KEP members certainly disagree with that! They find it a very rewarding experience…

It is so good to know Kechara have another department is doing recycling which called Kechara Earth Project. Promoting recycling program to the children and schools is definitely a good idea because children can influence the way of their parents’s thinking. Everything start from education, awareness and responsibility for environment should be planted at a young age. It is good that program combined with arts and craft, creativity make the process become more fun.
Good job Wai Meng, this is very meaningful.
It is very important to bring the children, especially in their formative years closer in understanding about the values and the ways to be a responsible citizen of the earth. Through art and craft, and hands on participation, younger children will be able to relate better. Thank you KEP team.
Wai Meng did a great job in this event promoting KEP’s recycling program to the children and schools. The response was very good because many schools wanted to instill environmental awareness and responsibility values in their students at a young age and the children were attracted to the arts and craft.
I understand from Wai Meng that he will be doing more to promote recycling. I’m looking forward to this initiative becoming a full fledge department of Kechara.
This is our very own way to do our part ti save the world. We might not be able to totally said to plastic yet, we are reducing and reusing.
Kechara earth project it’s very not easy, because no one from the committee actually have experience to deal with rubbish. Wai meng is heading this project together with Yek Yee from Kechara Care.
They are working very hard to protect the mother earth, to due with the environment problem, education is the key. To attend this event actually bring awareness to the young kids. By doing art and craft with environment friendly products actually bought the message across to young generation.
Thanks KEP to make this happen.
Kechara Earth Project has filled a much needed void within Kechara’s community services. This is our first environmentally friendly, green initiative to serve the people of the Klang Valley and later, beyond.
Wai Meng single-handedly pulled the team together, formed a committee, went out into the urban jungle of Sunwaymas creating awareness and telling people about his vision. Well, with much effort, determination and sheer single-mindedness and devotion to the green concept, Wai Meng has made Kechara Earth Project into a reality that is making strides into greening the urban areas of Malaysia.
On a personal note, I really like Kechara Earth Project’s mission and vision… another way that Kechara can serve the people of Malaysia, and share our message of world peace with all!
Great job to Wai Meng and everyone involved
