I died in below freezing temperatures and weighed 5 pounds at the time of my death, I died with only 2 leaves in my stomach.
The Monster has been arrested that allowed Joshua to die and 2 other dogs to slowly starve and freeze, the 2 other dogs survived and have been taken by Animal Control.
Joshua’s abuser has been charged. Her name is Brittany Danielle Coble. Coble, a 22-year-old woman, now faced with a pair of animal cruelty charges after an investigation by the Lexington Police Department and The Ginger’s Fund.
An arrest warrant alleged Coble failed to feed a dog and house it out of cold weather, in addition to not providing medical attention. A second warrant stated Coble deprived the necessary sustenance for a mix beagle and miniature pinscher.
I spoke with Donna Grooms, Executive Director with the Ginger’s Fund. Grooms stated “ I actually had no doubt that there would be a felony charge for the death of “Little Joshua”. I’m pleased that the Lexington Police Department and Animal Control Officer “Sam Fritts” do not take animal abuse/cruelty/neglect lightly. “

In Death I’ve been given a name and I will soon be laid to rest with dignity. My name is Joshua and this is the story of how I died.
If only I could communicate with you, I would ask you not to cry for me. My suffering has ended, no longer do I shiver from cold or hunger for a morsel of food. Now that my necropsy is completed I will be laid to rest on a farm belonging to one of Gingers Fund Founders. I’ll be in the company of a little pit (Sammy), a Rottie (Jake) and a Great Dane (Zena) – hope we really do go to the Rainbow Bridge cause it looks like I’ll have some Big Friends to hang out with.
I wish I could tell you that I didn’t leave my miserable life hungry but that would be a lie. I was starving, cold and help just didn’t get here in time for me. A call was placed to 911 on 1/22/14 from a concerned citizen to report my situation. When the Animal Control Officer “Sam Fritts” with the Lexington NC Police Department arrived he found me dead, frozen, chained in the yard with no food or water but he didn’t leave me behind. He took my 5 lbs body along with my friends Jasper and Jasmine (who are still fighting for their lives) to Davidson Animal Hospital and called Gingers Fund.

Joshua died with only 2 leaves in his stomach,in freezing cold and weighing only 5 pounds! Joshua’s inhumane abuse by his owner is just beyond our imagination.Yet there are many like them who have no empathy and just blatantly ignore the suffering of gentle helpless beings placed in their care.
Thank you Rinpoche for helping to create awareness of the cruelty and inhumanity of humans towards animals and pets placed under their care.It is to be hoped that Joshua’s owner will be adequately punished by the law for cruelty to Joshua and two other pets, so that everyone will understand it is criminally wrong to hurt and abuse them. This will act as a deterrent to others of similar mind.Humans must continue to be educated about why it matters to be kind to animals and not to eat them or abuse them.
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing the real story with us and brought us the awareness of animals’ cruelties which are still happening now. No animal should be captivated and endured all the pain and suffering because of human’s deluded misdeeds.
The life of Joshua will not be gone in vain but serves as a lesson learnt for all of us that any animals’ cruelty or ill-treatment committed by anyone will be judged according to the law and regulations. By right, there will be no benefits gain for anyone who torture the animals but this act of cruelty will only deepen our negative emotions such as hatred, revengeful and wrong views that keep us forever in misery and unhappiness because outer negativity will not lead our inner self to peace and ultimate happiness.
May all the animals be free from pain and suffering, and able to receive the blessing from all the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas.

Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this article. Again and again so many pet owners abuse their pets by not taking care of them, not giving them proper food, not giving them the love, etc. This is inhuman and is animal cruelty. If the pet owners put themselves into their pet’s shoes, they will realize that there are much suffering. Why own a pet when you can’t or don’t want to take care of them? Might as well put them up for adoption. At least the pets don’t need to suffer so much.

Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this story to give us an example of animals are being abused everywhere in the world. I am glad that the person who is responsible for Joshua’s death had been charged and detained. I don’t understand of how a human being can treat loving animal with such harsh ways. They must had very distorted views on the value of the animal’s life to be able to commit such horrendous act.
But again, karma and imprints is all connected. They must had negative imprints to devalue life of others to be able to starve a poor animal to death. Wrong views and perception also arise from negative karma. With wrong perception, they create negative karma and imprints again. This is an vicious never ending cycle. This is why dharma is so precious. It breaks the cycle by purifying karma and remove wrong perceptions. Thus, liberating us from suffering caused by our own actions.

Pets and domestic animals are dependent on humans for their survival. If their human owners do not take care of them, and abandon them, they will die. The cause of death could be starvation as a result of animal abuse as in the case of Joshua. Or it could be due to the climate change which farm animals are not used to. These days, extreme cold in winter has resulted in herds of animals like reindeer not being able to get at the grass buried deep under the snow. If the owners do not feed them, many might starve to death. Natural disasters are not man-made but sometimes the owners have to abandon their pets. Not being able to find food, they starve to death.
There are many sad stories. What is important is not to just feel sad but to create awareness of animal cruelty so that there will be less of such sad stories. People should be educated in ethical behaviour towards animals. May all animals be free of fear and pain, hunger and thirst and all types of harm.
Animals should not be hurt! I absolutely love animals and i hope all the abusers and killers get their share of pain by karma in hell. They had it coming. On a brighter note, i will never hurt an animal and i am a proud vegetarian. Thank you for sharing Rinpoche.
This is terrible Joshua had to suffer both starvation and hypothermia before passing. I’m very glad to see the authorities of Lexington do not take animal abuse lightly. That I believe should be the way because all lives are equal, life is precious. I do hope the actions taking against Joshua’s abuser would fit the crime she had commited.
When i first clicked on this post, i wasn’t expecting such news. The first line i read already made me want to stop. Why would anyone do such things, i know this isn’t the right thing to say at this moment but i really hope that that women who is responsible for this cruelty will face charges. She was extremely cruel and doesn’t deserve to be let go so easily.
This is very sad, one innocent life is lost due to the cruelty of one human being. May Joshua will have a good and swift rebirth. Rest in peace Joshua! Om Mani Pedme Hung.

姑息养奸 －－This is a Chinese saying similar to the meaning of the quote. Our world will be a better one not because we have less bad people, but with more people who speaks when necessary and for those who can’t speak like Joshua.
I am indeed sad to know that there are those who enjoy seeing others suffer.I just could not understand, what pleasure they get out of such cruel acts of inhumanity.
For those who continue such practice they should know that, what goes around ,comes around.The laws of Karma is fair and acts without malice.
It is good to know that there are those who fights to defends the weak and helpless.For those kind souls,may they be bless with the means to carry out their noble acts of compassion as an example for the rest to follow.

Such serious ill-treatment of animals, inflicting purposeless pains and sufferings on them is undoubtedly, an exhition of “Sadism”, which every moral and sane human beings must denounced! In our Buddhist (in fact in all religions) scriptures, it is said, “Let him not destroy any life at all, or sanction the acts of those who do so. Let him refrain from hurting any creature, both strong and those that tremble in the world.” It is one of those things we need to consider seriously if we want to improve the World and save our poor souls! Your voice is our and clear, Joshua. Because of you there will be more awareness and actions taken against animal abusers. I am glad to see that animal rights are being upheld in the West and hoping that it will be the same in the future in Malaysia.
Humans that torture and kill animals should receive heavy punishment… in fact, equal punishment by law as taking the life of a human.
But as long as people remain meat eaters, such a law can never be passed… how can a judge give a heavy penalty to someone that killed a dog when his or her dinner after the session is a piece of rare steak?
So because of that, all these criminals get off easily… despite psychological studies shown people that torture and kill animals eventually become mass murderers in our society.
I guess the only way we can relief this situation for now is by preventing animals from suffering… one at a time. After all, animal cruelty will not go away as long as people remain as meat eaters.
Dear Rinpoche, I don’t what to say to Joshua or it’s abuser. But I do have something to say to the police. If you say abusing dogs is against the law then what about slaughtering cows, pigs,chickens and fishes? I’m not saying that abusing dogs is not wrong. I’m saying that they should shut down the abattoirs because they are killing more animals each year than you can imagine.
This is so sad, it brought tears to my eyes while I was reading through the whole article. How could that heartless 22 year-old girl starve 3 dogs to death? ( although 2 survived ). How could she do that? I hope that Joshua takes a good rebirth and never have to go through such a horrible process again. He did not deserve it.

Here at one end is it’s causal and on the the other end it ripening, interwoven with their secondary supporting karma.The cyclic experience of samsaric suffering goes round and round. The only way to put a stop to this is through wisdom of right view,But then to be fortunate enough to learn about right view required tremendous amount of good merits. While we are at it now, treasure it! _/\_
Thank you Rinpoche for putting this up. I truly support for what LT Loo has been saying. Before I follow the Buddhist way of life, I may have the same opinion like most of us (including those who have put their comment here) but recently I will feel that, the only explanation is Karma. Ignorance and the force of Karma may explain these but I am not expert in these.
‘Even a single being is the object for our compassion’ is what I have learnt so far. I am not supporting for the action that has been done neither do I condemned the person.
Animals have lives and they feel pain too. I feel animal abusers should be given the death penalty, and the meat industries should stop as well. Animals have minds too so i am sick when i hear this. Thank you for sharing Rinpoche.

It is sad to see such abuse exist and there are many that are being abused on a daily basis. Just wondering what compelled people to act this way? What joy it brings?
I do not understand why humans can be so cruel as to not take care of pets when they have them. If you are incapable of being responsible for their well-beings then don’t take them. I wish that this would happen less.
This is indeed a sad story of abuse and in this instance of a poor dog. Abuse of animals by someone so young at 22 years, Brittany D. Coble, will eventually lead her to abuse other forms of lives including her own. As such I am glad the police took this incident to task and have charged Brittany with criminal act.
As always it is very sad to see cruelty done to animals who can only suffer in silence. At least in the case of Joshua, he has not died in vain. Through Rinpoche’s blog millions will read of Joshua’s suffering and death from cruelty and abuse.

Thanks for the sharing. This is a sad news Joshua was die of hunger and tortured by a young lady. We need to share this story to stop another tradegy happen again.
I cannot believe such evil humans actually exist. I find humans that prey on the weak, especially animals that cannot fight back, cannot voice out and scream for help, the humans that abuse and torture them are really the lowest and yes they may get away now but they cannot get away from their karma and they will reap their repercussion in their next life… could be in hell. They are no different from a murderer that kill another human. It is so sad and shameful to see this as a human.
This 22 year old girl deserves to be arrested. I cannot understand how a girl can be this cold and leaves me to speculate that it is through her upbringing and people she is surrounded with could all be very disturb and violent. She must have learnt it from someone, hence this is why it is so important to teach our kids virtues and values from a young age, and if possible some spirituality/Dharma to help become better humans, sensitive and caring of others. At least do not harm others!
Joshua, I felt sorry for you after reading your message in facebook. Your story was a sad one. Please rest in peace as awareness has been created by H.E. Tsem Tulku Rinpoche for you and many others whom might probably experiencing the same fate as you.

We continue to read articles of animals being absued to such a stage that they eventually die. Just do not understand why some people can keep pets but abuse them.
Teary eyed..another sad story of life lost due to decline of humanity. When will all realize how precious life is no matter who it belongs to? I m still working on my own perception wt cockcroaches, mosquitoes n those in “pest” category. Om Mani Peme Hum!
