His Holiness Sharpa Choeje Rinpoche Jetsun Lobsang Nyima

The abbot, tantric master, Vidyadhara, pandit and Vinaya holder. I place his picture here so all of you can be blessed for seeing him and hearing his holy name. May all of you be blessed and follow in his footsteps. There is nothing new in samsara and nothing further to learn. Nothing more to explore. Practice Dharma and transform from the depths of your being.

His Holiness Sharpa Choeje Rinpoche Jetsun Lobsang Nyima the Lord of the East. He is from Gaden Shartse Monastery and a devoted student of H.H. Trijang Rinpoche and H.H. Zong Rinpoche.

He was in a 3 year, 3 month and 3 day Vajra Yogini retreat (Nyenchen) in Bomdila, North India after completing his term of abbot of Gyuto Tantric College. He did 10 million Vajra Yogini mantras during the retreat with four sessions a day and many offerings with full sadhana. After completing as per ritual, he did 100,000 fire puja offering to Vajra Yogini to conclude the Nyenchen. The fire pujas were daily  and all day and took him 1 month to complete. He did his multitude of sadhanas daily of other deities and commitments and also his Dorje Shugden pujas once a month as he has been doing for over 50 years!

After resting for a short while, he entered into ANOTHER Nyenchen for the next three years again! After he completed his second Vajra Yogini Nyenchen, he was instructed by His Holiness the Dalai Lama to become the abbot of Gaden Shartse Monastery.

I had the privilege/honor/good merits to meet him as the abbot and I had the great fortune to receive Vajra Yogini initiation from him. He did it privately in his room with around only 15 persons. I was too lucky. He did not like fanfare of any kind or honors or prestige. He was a simple and quiet monk although so high ranking, it never affected him in any way.

I use to have the great good merits once to enter into the washroom and personally wash his body, cut his nails and dry him off and offer him fresh robes. It is very meritorious to wash our gurus, wash their clothes, to keep their rooms and items clean and clean their temples where they teach dharma. We believe the act of cleaning holy objects like statues and temples and sangha residences is a very powerful way to gain merit and create the causes for us to eliminate ego. We believe you purify a lot of demerit. He allowed me to do this as I requested many times. After washing his holy body, scrubbing, rinsing, cutting nails, I dried him and offered him clean clothes to this pure and virtuous monk. I prostrated to him fully to thank him to allow a dirty, useless, ego filled person like me to touch his body, wash and clean this Vinaya holder. He patiently let me wash him and then dry him. After he put on his clothes, he allowed me to offer him some delicious Indian food as this was in India. I was so happy to offer him food and tea.

The next few days I took him for full medical checks as Sharpa Choeje Rinpoche manifested diabetes. I was able to find sponsorship for everything due to some kind persons. So I took him for the full round of tests and doctors. I wanted his diabetes to be under control. I was so happy to do this.  Some will not allow this as they have no plans to extend his life. Luckily for us, he extended his life therefore allowing this.

This is one of the masters that touch me deeply and tears flow when I think of him. I miss him very much and I feel fortunate to have received Vajra Yogini from him as he and Vajra Yogini have merged minds. He was a scholar of the highest degree, a tantric master, an abbot and Sharpa Choje which is throne holder of the East, next in line to be Gaden Tripa. He was always humble and simple next to his gurus and exhibited the freedom from the 8 Worldly Dharmas.

I follow and trust the mind, examples and works of beings like him. I strive to be like him although I know it’s a longshot. I will never listen to associates, family, peers, friends who advise me against dharma as they do not know what they are saying. They may have good intention, but without wisdom, good intents can lead to unhappy circumstances in samsara. I wanted to share this great master with all of you…I asked him once, if he didn’t become abbot of Gaden Shartse Monastery, what would he have done? He said without hesitation, he would have entered his 3rd Nyenchen of Vajra Yogini!

With my crown to his feet,

Tsem Rinpoche

His Holiness Sharpa Choeje Rinpoche Jetsun Lobsang Nyima the Vinaya Holder and Mahasiddha

His reincarnation as confirmed by Dorje Shugden and His Holiness the Dalai Lama. When you do your practice correctly, you do return to continue. Reincarnation and gaining control of it, is one of the beneficial features of tantra and Vajra Yogini’s practice. When one wishes to pass away, where to reincarnate and what circumstances will be a controlled choice of accomplished Vajra Yogini practitioners.

Please support us so that we can continue to bring you more Dharma:

Always a joyful to read the namtars of the great spiritual masters, who focused on a whole multitude of sentient beings.

    • Jacinta Goh on Nov 4, 2016 at 7:43 am

      Thanks Wai Meng.

Now only I know the spiritual biography in Tibetan is called Namtar. Yes, fully agreed with you that it is always joyful to listen or read biographies of great beings. They might manifested simple life however, it has lots more meaning than ours.

Thanks Rinpoche for sharing with us the story of this Master.

Thank you Rinpoche for sharing with us about this great master and his holy picture with us, I think being able to be engage in the retreat is the best thing that we can do for ourselves but unfortunately most of us will rather choose samsaric enjoyment than spiritual because of our habituation life time after life time so the only way is to inspire by this great master that can motivate us to be more committed in our spiritual journey.

  6. Joy on Nov 4, 2015 at 11:56 pm

Wow… amazing indeed to know that our lineage of vajra Yogini practice comes from such esteemed Gurus/living Buddhas. Now I recognise and understand this word “Nyenchen” from Rinpoche’s explanation that day. I always like how Rinpoche shares with us stories and experiences with such highly attained masters… it brings them to life, it brings us one step closer and connected with our lineage Gurus. It helps us appreciate our connection with Rinpoche and gives us direction to how we should aspire to become. Thank you Rinpoche for this sharing… and well I guess someone as highly attained as His Holiness Sharpa Choeje Rinpoche could not have been wrong or mistaken about Dorje Shugden. If His Holiness would rely on Dorje Shugden, obviously it is definitely good for us.

  7. Sarah on Nov 4, 2015 at 9:57 pm

    Dear Rinpoche,
I enjoyed reading your write-up H.H. Sharpa Choeje Rinpoche. He was such an attained master and yet so humble. I’m glad his reincarnation is back.

  8. Pastor David Lai on Nov 4, 2015 at 1:29 pm

    Dear Rinpoche,
I love Rinpoche’s stories for its honesty, emotion, devotion and powerful visuals. I am always overwhelmed with the many emotions that RInpoche portray within each story and how each has a message to relay. I love this story for the accomplishment of this great lama and for Rinpoche’s devotion. Such stories bring tears to my eyes and how rare it is to find such devotion in today’s world of materialism and self-gratification.

  9. Pastor Lim Han Nee on Nov 3, 2015 at 7:32 pm

Thank you Rinpoche for sharing about His Holiness Sharpa Choeje Rinpoche Jetsun Lobsang Nyima, this great pandit and tantric Master, abbot of Gaden Shartse Monastery, who was a great Vajrayogini practitioner.I read, with awe and amazement about his accomplishments. He went into two 3 year, 3 month and 3 day Vajra Yogini retreat (Nyenchen), one after another. After he had completed his second retreat, he was appointed abbot of Gaden Shartse Monastery by HH the Dalai Lama.Yet he was so humble about all this. When asked later what he would have done if he had not been appointed as abbot of Gaden Shartse, he said without hesitation, he would have entered his 3rd Nyenchen of Vajra Yogini!

But it was Tsem Rinpoche’s devotion to him that is itself a most powerful teaching on devotion to one’s Guru. Cleaning the holy body of one’s Guru, Rinpoche says, is a highly meritorious act, as well as serving him with food and taking care of his health; cleaning him is also a powerful practice of purification. The following account is a study in humility and Guru Devotion -that of Tsem Rinpoche toward his Guru, HH Sharpa Choeje Rinpoche Jetsun Lobsang Nyima.

“After washing his holy body, scrubbing, rinsing, cutting nails, I dried him and offered him clean clothes to this pure and virtuous monk. I prostrated to him fully to thank him to allow a dirty, useless, ego filled person like me to touch his body, wash and clean this Vinaya holder. He patiently let me wash him and then dry him. After he put on his clothes, he allowed me to offer him some delicious Indian food as this was in India. I was so happy to offer him food and tea”

Thank you Rinpoche for sharing an introduction and pictures of His Holiness Sharpa Choeje Rinpoche Jetsun Lobsang Nyima with Rinpoche’s experience in Gaden Shartse Monastery. We are fortunate to receive the blessings through the pictures of His Holiness Sharpa Choeje Rinpoche as well as knowing about His Holiness Vajra Yogini retreat (Nyenchen).

May Dharma continues to grow to all directions and more people connecting to Dharma practice through the current reincarnation of His Holiness Sharpa Choeje Rinpoche.

Thank you Rinpoche for sharing an insight into the practice of such a great monk as His Holiness Sharpa Choeje Rinpoche Jetsun Lobsang Nyima; and also how Rinpoche revered this great Guru and received the Vajrayogini empowerments. The information is valuable as one has the aspiration to receive such divine empowerments, as a ticket out of samsara and into Enlightment. As Rinpoche wisely quoted “There is nothing new in samsara and nothing further to learn. Nothing more to explore. Practice Dharma and transform from the depths of your being “. Thank you Rinpoche

  12. Jill Yam on Nov 2, 2015 at 6:11 pm

Thank you Rinpoche for this beautiful sharing.
Even though Rinpoche wishes to be in retreat but have not done so due to your compassionate nature to give us dharma teachings instead.
I pray that one day Rinpoche’s wish to be in retreat will come true.
And knowing that Rinpoche will be giving some students the VajraYogini practice is simply so wonderful.

The Buddha Shakyamuni and Bodhisattva Manjushri worked closely to expound the Dharma, although Manjushri himself had achieved enlightenment many lifetimes ago. According to the Avatamsaka Sutra, Manjushri is actually the Buddha Nageshvaraja who achieved enlightenment many eons ago in a different world system. In Shakyamuni’s time however, he took the form of Manjushri, a student of Lord Buddha himself. Indeed, many teachings arose just because Manjushri asked a question to Buddha Shakyamuni.

Manjushri is the embodiment of wisdom and knowledge, and this Namasanghiti text that recalls his names and qualities represents the pinnacle of all Shakyamuni Buddha’s teachings. Scholars classify it as a tantra of the non-dual (advaya) class, along with the Kalachakra Tantra.

The Namasanghiti was expounded by Shakyamuni Buddha for his disciple Vajrapani and his wrathful retinue in order to lead them to Buddhahood. The essence of the Namasanghiti text is that Manjushri Bodhisattva is the embodiment of all knowledge. The Namasanghiti is a short text, consisting only of around 160 verses and a prose section, which is a fraction of the vast Sutras such as Avatamsaka Sutra and Prajnaparamita Sutras, or the endless ocean of tantras such as Manjushri-Mula-Kalpa.

Need to be aware of visiting all this countries.

The veneration of relics is an ancient custom that plays an important role in major world religions such as Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, and Shamanism. For example, sites that house holy relics in Christianity are major pilgrimage destinations because it is believed that these relics are a benediction to the living and the deceased.

In Buddhism, holy relics generally refer to the physical remains or personal effects of Buddha Shakyamuni. Incredibly, some of Buddha Shakyamuni’s bodily remains have survived for two and a half millennia, including the much-revered sacred tooth of the Buddha in Kandy, Sri Lanka.

Most Buddhist temples have stupas, and these stupas are often created specifically to house precious relics. Such reliquary stupas often become the initial structure around which the whole temple is later based. Today, stupas may also hold the ashes or ringsel (relics in Tibetan) of prominent or respected Buddhist masters.

Towering imposingly and majestically in the sky, mountains are believed to possess supernatural properties because they are closer to heaven than any other earthly feature. Interestingly, many mountains are linked to spirituality and enlightened beings, such as the Buddha and Jesus.

From the earliest times, many peoples from the Greeks and Native Americans to the Indians and Polynesians have placed mountains central to their beliefs. The power of such sacred places is believed to enhance the mortal experience and sometimes, it is even forbidden to climb them out of respect.

The mountain calls to us with its calm and serene environment and is often chosen as the site for religious retreats. Pilgrimages to holy mountains are also a way to connect to the sacred and they allow us to purify our sins through the rigour of an arduous climb. In some religions, adherents are urged to make such a pilgrimage at least once in their lifetime.

Here is a selection of sacred mountains scattered across the globe. They are revered by people separated by vast spaces but united in their awe and regard for these magnificent giants of nature.

Labrang Monastery in Xiahe County, northwest China’s Gansu Province, is an annual destination for tourists, Buddhists and pilgrims from around the world. They gather to witness the unveiling of the world’s largest thangka (tapestry) of Buddha, as part of the Grand Monlam Prayer festivities.

Also called the “Sunning of the Buddha” ritual, at this time, Tibetan monks invite a giant thangka about 100-feet long and 65-feet wide of Buddha Amitabha, up a mountain near Labrang Monastery, which is the largest Tibetan monastery outside of Lhasa.

It is unveiled at first light on the side of the mountain so that the first rays of the sun illuminate the sacred painting.

This is not the only story about how Rinpoche helped others. I remember reading an article about Rinpoche buying lottery tickets from a woman in Thailand so she could end her day earlier with the income she needs for the family. Rinpoche always walked the talks, he didn’t just preach but he showed us how to put his teachings in practice. Never be afraid to be kind and nice to others, and when we are kind to others, it should not be with the intention to get something back from them. Be kind and be generous always, this is how we can make our planet a better living space.

If we want to go on holidays, it is better to go to holy places. Even if such places are not sophisticated, they benefit us spiritually; we can take a break and collect merit, plant Dharma seeds and be blessed. This is a good way of combining the pleasure of holidays with the spirituality of collecting merit.

Never get tired of collecting merit because it offsets negative karma that leads to suffering. People without Dharma will not know this so for them, a holiday is a holiday. They do not know that their holidays will bring no long-term benefit. With Dharma, we are wiser.

We should go on pilgrimage to places where holy beings are known to reside or where great practitioners have engaged in profound practices. These places are vortexes of energy – an area where concentrated energy naturally converges on the planet’s surface.

Mainland Thai culture is heavily influenced by Buddhism. However, unlike most other Buddhist countries of East Asia, Thai Buddhists follow the Theravada school of Buddhism. Thai temples, known as wats, are usually adorned with lavish gold ornaments, and are easily identifiable by their multi-coloured pointed roofs. Pre-Buddhist traditions have been infused with the values of Buddhism, making Thailand a cultural powerhouse.

According to Buddhist history, the first recorded use of incense occurred during Buddha Shakyamuni’s time, when a woman named Magadha Sangmo offered incense and prayers to request the Buddha to come forth and visit her village. Magadha Sangmo was the daughter of the Buddha main patron, Suddatta. She mirrored her father’s immense faith in Buddha Shakyamuni and was his ardent devotee.

After marrying and moving to a village where Buddhism was not practised, she wished very much to meet her guru, the Buddha, again. So one day, she climbed to the roof of her in-law’s house, offered incense and sincerely prayed for the Buddha to visit her. Hearing her prayers, Buddha Shakyamuni, together with his entourage, descended from the sky to fulfil her request. It is said that upon meeting the Buddha and hearing his teachings, the entire village became Buddhists. In this way, Magadha Sangmo’s heartfelt request to the Buddha also benefited those around her and succeeding generations.

Magadha Sangmo recited the following verse while engaged in prayer to the Buddha:

MA LU SEM CHEN KUN GYI GON GYUR CHING
DU TE PUNG CHAY MI ZAY JOM DZAY LHA
NGO NAM MA LU YANG DA KYEN GYUR PAY
CHOM DEN KOR CHAY NAY DIR SHEG SU SOL

Malaysia’s rich cultural diversity is reflected in the country’s packed calendar of events and festivals. Most of these celebrations have religious or cultural origins and many are also designated as either state or national holidays.

Celebrated by everyone in the country, the colourful festivities which observe the ethnic traditions and beliefs of the varied backgrounds of the population are what gives Malaysia the label of “Truly Asia” that it is so well known for.

The national events and festivals of Malaysia are occasions for family reunions and for joyful community get-togethers. They are world-class examples of how diversity can be inclusive and celebrated.

Many of these days of observation follow the lunar calendar, thus the dates they fall on vary from year to year.

Before our globalised world of jet-setting travel, cosmopolitan cities and urban migration, the entire region of the Malay archipelago was, for more than 600 years, an international destination for Arab, Indian and Chinese maritime traders and European explorers who, through the centuries, settled down for trade or for love in these parts, thus creating cosmopolitan communities.

A true melting pot, Malaysia is one of those rare places in the world where people of different ethnic origins, cultures, traditions and religious beliefs have infused harmoniously to form a distinct multicultural society.

This country’s rich heritage includes hundreds-of-years-old temples, churches and mosques — some of these located within doors of each other, others having in one place shrines dedicated to deities of different faiths or denominations. All of them have played a key role (and still do!) in shaping the nation by being centres for the community to convene and connect spiritually.

Thank you for sharing this story with us Pastor Niral. It is a very warm story that fills my heart with joy and warmth. Rinpoche had always taught us to focus out and take care of the people around us and this will bring us great joy. Our little actions will have an unimaginable impact on those people who are in need of warmth.

I must thank my dharma blog team who are great assets to me, Kechara and growth of dharma in this wonderful region. I am honoured and thrilled to work with them. I really am. Maybe I don't say it enough to them, but I am saying it now. I APPRECIATE THESE GUYS VERY MUCH!

The Unknown

The Known and unknown are both feared,
Known is being comfortable and stagnant,
The unknown may be growth and opportunities,
One shall never know if one fears the unknown more than the known.
Who says the unknown would be worse than the known?
But then again, the unknown is sometimes worse than the known. In the end nothing is known unless we endeavour,
So go pursue all the way with the unknown,
because all unknown with familiarity becomes the known.
~Tsem Rinpoche

What the meat industry figured out is that you don't need healthy animals to make a profit.
Sick animals are more profitable... farms calculate how close to death they can keep animals without killing them. That's the business model. How quickly they can be made to grow, how tightly they can be packed, how much or how little can they eat, how sick they can get without dying... We live in a world in which it's conventional to treat an animal like a block of wood. ~ Jonathan Safran Foer
