Top 10 Space Mysteries

Mar 9, 2011 | Views: 6,499

Advances in the fields of astronomy, mathematics, and physics has allowed us the tools to explore space more ‘in depth’. I find that life beyond our earth is not a maybe but a for sure. Buddha is clear on other existences, dimensions and life.  As science advances it will go very well side by side with Buddhism.

There are some interesting discoveries I’ve posted here. Take the time to study them and open your minds further… I love presenting my blog friends with interesting reads, facts, paranormal, dharma, thoughts, the past, history, strange phenomena’s, animal causes, and my works… just enjoy… Om Ah Ra Ba Za Na Dee…..

#10 Simulacrum in Eagle Nebula

One of the strangest photos that has ever been taken of space is that of the Eagle Nebula. The photo itself is supposed to show the birth of a star from the gaseous clouds. However, when the photo was shown on CNN, hundreds of calls came in from people reporting they could see a face in the cloud. When the color of the photo was adjusted, a large human form seemed to appear within the cloud. Scientist have not been able to explain this phenomena (though listverse very possible has on this list – see item 1). You can read more about it here.

This photo, taken on 1 April 1995 was named one of the best photos ever taken by the Hubble telescope. It shows the simulacrum of the Eagle Nebula. Stars are “born” here in each of the “fingers” of this formation. Therefore, this image has also been called “The Pillars of Creation.”

This image captures our imagination, not just for its beauty alone … but also because of an intriguing element hidden within the image. When this image was released by CNN on 2 November 1995, calls came in from people everywhere, claiming to see a mysterious face in the clouds of the nebula.

Can you see the face?

Look in the section of the nebula circled below..

Is this evidence of an extraterrestrial presence, or is it simply an illusion? There is no way to know for sure… In 2007 it was announced that the Pillars were destroyed by a shockwave from a supernova … and whatever was there, was gone before we ever saw it. According to scientists, we won’t be able to see its absence for another 1,000 years due to the limited speed of light. Nothing lasts forever, even the great birthplaces of the stars.

#9 Where Did Galaxies Come From?

Science has only recently been able to explain where the stars and planets came from. Now, scientists have turned their attention to a much bigger mystery, where did galaxies come from? What is known is that galaxies are not scattered randomly throughout space. Rather, they are found in clusters, known as “super clusters”.

Scientists have two main theories to attempt to explain galaxy formation. First, the gas left over from the big bang clustered together to form galaxies, in which stars and planets were born. Second is that gas from the big bang created stars and planets all over the universe, and they migrated through gravity into galaxies. Neither theory has been universally accepted yet.

Some scientists have seen an interesting pattern in the distribution of galaxies across the universe… they see this distribution forming fractals, which are geometric shapes where each smaller part approximately resembles a reduced-sized copy of the whole.

These geometric formations can been seen throughout nature in places like mountain ranges, rivers, trees, and plant life. How interesting that these patterns appear to extend from the smallest things here on Earth to the greater structure of our Universe as a whole.

#8 Other Earths

Our star, the sun, is just one of trillions in the universe. When you look at the fact that our star has eight planets, and do the math, it tells you that it is possible for there to be eight times as many planets in the universe than stars; an astounding figure. Is it not possible that just one of those planets might have life on it?

It is a fact that, since the year 2000, hundreds of extra solar planets have been discovered orbiting distant stars. Some of these have been found to be earth- like, such as Gliese 581d, a planet believed to have liquid water on its surface. Could it possibly contain life? Hopefully with advances in technology in the next decade, we will soon know the answer. Till then, it remains one of space’s greatest mysteries.

The star Gliese 581 is a red dwarf in the Libra constellation. It is the 87th closest star to our sun, making it a neighbour in astronomical terms.  There are several planets that encircle the star, which were found when scientists noticed the star wobbled slightly … this wobbling is caused by the gravitational pull of the orbiting planets.

Gliese 581d is about five times the size of the Earth, and circles its star, Gliese 581, very closely… completing an orbit in just 13 days. It never gets too hot or cold though, because Gliese 581d orbits a red dwarf star, much smaller than our sun.  The average temperature there stays between 34 – 104 degrees Fahrenheit … much like our Earth. In addition, there are several other potentially habitable stars in the Gliese system.

#7 Are There Other Universe?

This is one of the more controversial arguments out there. The theory is that there are an infinite number of universes, each governed by its own set of laws and physics. Many scientists dismiss this argument as nothing more than speculation, as there is no evidence or mathematical law that allows for the existence of other universes. However, believers in this theory have argued that there are none that disprove it either. This is one mystery which can only be solved if we were able to travel there. However, with the expansion of the universe, it is unlikely humanity will ever find the answer.

Scientists have recently made an exciting discovery that gives some evidence to the theory that other universes may exist. A pattern of concentric circles have been found in the cosmic microwave background (the “echo” of the big bang). Astronomers believe that this may be evidence of “bruising” from contact with another universe…

Basically, the theory is that the universe may run in a cycle … when one ends another begins … and each old universe is contained within the new one. There is another theory that there are many universes, each of which exists in a kind of cosmic bubble … these bubbles jostle into each other and create these bruises as a result.

These are some of the very first discoveries regarding the existence of other universes. It is exciting to think what we may find as the research in this area matures.

#6 Dark Matter

Albert Einstein’s equation e = mc2 is perhaps the best known equation of the century. However when applied to space, an anomaly occurs. When we use it to determine how much matter the universe should have, we realize that we have only found four percent of the matter in the universe! Where is the rest of it? Many believe it is in the form of dark matter. Where is this dark matter? It’s everywhere, wherever there is no visible matter. Scientists have yet to show any conclusive proof that dark matter does in fact exist. The fact that you can’t see it, touch it, and light and radio waves pass right through it undeterred makes it extremely hard to detect.

A couple of good videos:

https://video.tsemtulku.com/videos/Dark_Matter_3D_Map.mp4

Or view the video on the server at:
https://video.tsemtulku.com/videos/WhatIsDarkMatter.mp4

Source: http://bigthink.com/ideas/24602

We know that the matter that we see must only make up about 5% of the matter in the Universe … what makes up the rest is a big question. Scientists believe that about 25% of this missing space is dark matter.

Dark matter should not be confused with regular matter that is simply “dark.”  Dark matter cannot be detected by regular means, but scientists know that it is there through special calculations. Many theories exist regarding what dark matter actually is, or isn’t… However, one thing is for sure… the existence of dark matter really shows us how much we still have to learn about the workings of the universe.

#5 Mars/Earth Connection

When talking about life on other planets, some say we need go no further than our own solar system. Mars has always been thought to harbour life by many conspiracy theorists, saying that NASA is covering it up. Many photos have also called into question the possibility of civilization on Mars, such as the face on Mars, pyramids on Mars, and the photo of what appears to be an ape-like figure sitting on a rock on Mars.

While scientists have come out to debunk these photos, they have also admitted that they believe liquid oceans once covered the surface of Mars before its magnetic field disappeared. Is it possible that life did indeed once exist? The current missions to Mars hope to answer this question.

Recently, NASA has made the exciting discovery that water may have existed on Mars when the Mars Rover became stuck in the mud! This mud was most likely formed from melting snow…  and NASA experts concluded that, “It seems likely the region (on Mars)… may have likewise supported a habitable environment.”

http://bigthink.com/ideas/24602

A much more controversial discovery by the rover is an amazing photo from Mars’ surface that appears to show a female figure. Some people have analyzed this photo and swear that it is a human figure, while others claim that it is simply an optical illusion… What do you think?

#4 UFO Sightings by NASA Astronauts

NASA astronauts are some of the most highly trained and specialized people in the world. Often they are expert scientists that can explain almost anything. So when they see something they can’t explain, you can bet it is going to raise eyebrows. One of the most famous incidents occurred on a live broadcast on NBC in 1963.

Major Gordon Cooper was at the end of his 22nd orbit solo journey around the earth when he said that out of one of his windows he could see a glowing green object fast approaching. The object then made a sharp turn and shot away. He was sure he was not seeing things, as the radar in his spacecraft picked up the object as well. Upon his return to Earth, interviewers wanted to ask him about the object. However, NASA officials would not allow it. You can read about this and other astronaut sightings at this website.

Some of these sightings have been captured on camera, such as in this video:

Or view the video on the server at:
https://video.tsemtulku.com/videos/STS80_UFO_BestHighQualityVersionYet.mp4

In this video, a UFO appears to make a sharp right turn, take position, and then is joined by other UFOs…

Other conversations between astronauts and mission control seem to confirm that the astronauts were seeing UFOs. Check out this excellent video that shows some of the transcripts of conversations between astronauts on NASA’s GEMINI mission. Gemini was one of the first missions into space before the lunar missions.

#3 “White” Holes

One of Albert Einstein’s greatest accomplishments was proving, though mathematics, the existence of black holes. From the advances in technology, we now have been able to find several black holes, and believe one to be at the center of our very own Milky Way galaxy.

What is astonishing, however, is what Einstein also proved through his equations; white holes also exist. The exact opposite of black holes, white holes are believed to “spit out” an incredible amount of matter from seemingly nothing. Such an object should be easy to find, yet none have been. If one was found, it may help us explain other unknown mysteries, such as where the material that made the galaxies came from.

Some newer theories on the nature of white holes is that when a black hole collapses, a new universe emerges on the other side in the form of a white hole. Therefore, in any given universe, as many new universes would emerge as its number of black holes. The theory then goes on to state that some of these newly formed universes would be better suited for maintaining existence than others, resulting in a kind of evolution and natural selection on a grand universal scale!

It is fascinating to see patterns that we witness here on Earth, played out throughout the universe.

#2 Ruins on Moon

In this post, we have discussed the possibility of life on distant planets and in near planets. But could this life possibly at one time have been as close as the moon? This conspiracy theory states that there are indeed ancient ruins and buildings on the moon, but the government has been censoring them from the public. This theory had no backing until two recent breakthroughs.

A man who claims to have worked for the government censoring moon photos came forward with several, explaining how the censorship was done and that indeed there were structures on the moon. More recently, scientists announced they believe they have discovered water, possibly in ice or liquid form, under the surface of the moon.

For conspiracy theorists, this was all the proof they needed, while critics dismiss it as “ridiculous speculation”. You can read more about this, and watch a fascinating video, here.

According to some theorists, the Apollo astronauts took pictures of these lunar objects, which were later ordered to be destroyed. However, these orders were evidently disobeyed and these photos were leaked. Some people believe that it was not a budget cut that caused NASA to halt lunar exploration, but rather it was what they found on the surface that caused them to cease moon missions…

Conspiracy theorists see obvious traces of buildings and walls in these photos, such as these images included here. Other images also appear to show regular structures on the lunar surface.

#1 Dark Energy

Dark energy is the greatest mystery in the universe today, because of the fact that it is believed to be all around us, and it explains why there seems to be anomalies within the law of gravity. By the law of gravity, large objects, like galaxy clusters, should attract each other, and their gravitational pull should pull in other objects.

This however, is not the case, and the fact is most galaxy clusters are moving farther apart. This is due to the fact that the universe is expanding at an incredible rate. To answer the question of why this is, scientists developed the theory of Dark Energy, which has the opposite effect as gravity, pushing things apart. Mathematical calculations have shown that if it exists, it makes up 74% of our universe, outweighing gravity, and this is why the universe is stretching out. However we still have no conclusive proof, so it remains a mystery to us.

Dark energy can be described as anti-gravity… Without dark energy, the universe would be collapsing upon itself due to the constriction of gravity. However, science shows us that the universe has been expanding exponentially since the big bang. Scientists cannot come to a conclusion on how dark energy works, but it seems certain that it exists, and actually makes up about 75% of our Universe… It is amazing that such a major force in our universe goes unseen!

Our Human’s knowledge is usually learned. Thus, when we come to something which is not “normal” to us, automatically our logic mind will be shutting down. By looking at the space and the mysteries, we can’t ignore that there are life out there. How we human came from itself is already a big mysteries.

I like to look at space photos, it show me that how small we are and everything in life is impermanent, it opened up my mind to explore to more possibilites and not to be so rigid.

Interesting findings and discoveries by scientists ,what is up there in sky . Astronauts and scientists has taken many breath taking and interesting images of the universe. They then discovered that the possibility of life on other planets ,the existence of black holes, and so forth. The astronauts even saw UFOs. …sound interesting. Reading this article really me open up my views of what is existing beyond my imagination.
I do enjoyed reading it and learned some new words which I have not come across before.
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this interesting post .

I believe other universes exist. Why, is a bit harder to explain. In a way it kind of doesn’t make sense because I don’t “believe” in a lot of things in this world that I live in and yet without any apparent proof I believe other universes exist. The only thing it proves is the duality of our mind.

I enjoy reading about space, time and universe, the only problem is I don’t always understand or comprehend what I read. Space-time in particular fascinates me. We live in it, it ticks tocks away and it eludes us all.

The universe, outer space, the galaxies have always fascinated me since I was very very young. I loved pictorial books on planets and space. I’m sure I did not know what outer space, planets, stars and galaxies are all about at the age of 10 but somehow the images were comforting so to speak. But the science and academic behind space became too complicated to understand and I guess “real life” caught up as well while growing up. Occasionally I go back to read about them every now and then. I think I will come back again and again from time to time to read and re-read this article. That’s the beauty of this blog site, it’s timeless.

  4. Eliza on Mar 18, 2011 at 6:55 am

I hadn’t heard of quite a few of these, thank you.

According to Abhidharma, do other universes exist? Is it our job to save beings in them too, if they exist?

Thank you for posting about interesting phenomena.

    • tsemtulku on Mar 18, 2011 at 12:04 pm

Dear Eliza, definitely other billionsof universes exist and trillions of other planets/lifeforms exist. Yes when we generate compassion for all sentient beings, it definitely includes them. They are in samsara also. Earth is only one small speck of what exists in samsara. The classification ‘humans’ are not just the ones on earth but all over the universes. Even in dimensions that are formless. Much care, Tsem Rinpoche

Probably because having everything in the world doesn’t actually bring happiness, but only leads to an extremely depressed, empty and bitter life because happiness is from the inside. Therefore it is very refreshing to read what Mr Chen has to say.

Thank you Rinpoche for sharing with us the origin of Namkar Barzin, how he became one of the entourage of Dorje Shugden. From this story, we also learned that a high lama has the ability to subdue an unenlightened being and bind it by oaths to help to protect Dharma and Dharma practitioner.

Since this is the case, there must be a high lama who can subdue Dorje Shugden and bind him by oaths so he does not harm people. Why is that until today, no one manages to subdue Dorje Shugden? The only explanation is Dorje Shugden is an enlightened being, therefore he cannot be subdued. We can safely rely on Dorje Shugden to help us to remove our obstacles in life and provide us a conducive environment to practice Dharma.

There are many great men in India that we are not so familiar with, Mr. Rabindranath Tagore is one of them. He understood how important education to grow good leaders for the country. He also knew that report card is not everything but it is more important to educate the children about creativity and responsibility. Mr Rabindranath Tagore was very selfish, he believed strongly in his passion and he did everything he could to materialise his idea. He had a great care and passion for humanity, fame to him was not important at all.

As with any story of success, there always comes with it tales of jealousy and envy. In Tulku Drakpa Gyaltsen’s life story, this is represented in the form of Depa Norbu. It was at Depa Norbu’s hand and under his orders that Tulku Drakpa Gyaltsen was murdered. While the run-up to the actual murder differs according to varying traditions, the end result is always the same — a hugely popular lama of high repute, erudite scholarship and unstained reputation was found dead with a khata (ritual silk scarf) stuffed down his throat.

I rejoice to see the 11th Panchen Lama has started to teach, fulfilling his duty as a high lama. The Panchen Lama reincarnation lineage is as important as the Dalai Lama reincarnation lineage. The previous Panchen Lama was highly respected by Tibetans and Chinese, he was a very high lama. The current incarnation has learned from a very qualified teacher and thus he is also very qualified to teach.

I have seen a video of him speaking in Chinese, he speaks very well and he is also very charismatic. He is still young, I am sure he can do a lot in preserving and spreading Tibetan Buddhism.

In 1987, the China Disabled People’s Performing Arts Troupe was formed. They are a professional performing arts troupe made up of 106 performers with hearing and/or visual impairments or physical disabilities. For the next 20 years, the 106 performers worked hard to turn professional in 2000. By 2004, they gave up their government allowance, began supporting themselves… and started raising money for charities! So beautiful no matter what angle you look at it from.

Aged between 14-19, they slowly-but-steadily learned the art of dancing through sign language with other trainers. To make up for the lack of one or more of their senses, they put in more time, effort and have immense determination. Determination is the key for all success for anyone.

For any one dance that they perform, they can spend up to one year practicing it for an average of 6-10 hours a day! Each move that they make is practiced about 100 times!!

They have acquired international recognition and have performed in highly-recognised venues such as Scala in Milan, Carnegie Hall in New York, The Kennedy Center (for Bill Clinton), the Opera House in Sydney and “The Egg” in Beijing. They have performed in more than 60 countries (10 times in the USA alone), been invited to perform at events such as the closing ceremony of the Paralympics in Athens (2004) and Miss World 2004 pageant… and was designated as “UNESCO Art for Peace” by the Director-General of UNESCO!

Daibutsu (or 大佛/大仏) means ‘Great Buddha’ or ‘giant Buddha’ in Japanese. It can also be used informally to refer to a big Buddha statue. One such statue is in Kamakura, Japan. The Daibutsu is a statue of Amitabha Buddha and is called The Great Buddha of Kamakura.

The statue dates back to 1252 AD, and is of Amitabha Buddha in sitting position. The statue is approximately 13.35 meters tall, weighing approximately 93 tons and is made from bronze. It is hollow and visitors can enter to view the interior.

According to the temple records, the current statue was preceded by another wooden Daibutsu. A court lady named Inadano-Tsubone, who was an attendant of Shogun Yorimoto, had raised funds together with a priest named Joko. When they collected enough funds, they started the construction work in 1238. That statue took 5 years of construction, but was destroyed after a storm hit the area in 1248. The hall that covered the statue was also destroyed.

They constructed it again, but this time they collected more funds and made a bronze statue. They then constructed a hall to shelter the statue… but it was yet again destroyed in 1335 during a large storm. The hall reconstructed once again, but a typhoon in 1368 brought it down. The 4th (and final) reconstruction of the hall stood for 127 years, until a tsunami hit Japan and destroyed it. However, the bronze statue remained intact and it has been left under the open air since.

The serene and majestic Mount Fanjing (or Fanjing Shan 梵凈山), its peaks towering above the cloud banks, is steeped in Buddhist lore and tradition. ‘Fanjing’ (梵凈) means ‘Buddhist tranquillity’. In another explanation, the mountain received its name “Fanjing”, as an abbreviation of Fantianjingtu, a Buddhist term which means “Brahma’s Pure Land”. Mount Fanjing is also called Yuejing (Moon Mirror) Mountain because the temple at its peak can be seen reflected on the surrounding smooth rock on a clear moonlit night.

Mount Fanjing is part of the Wuling Range in south-western China’s Guizhou Province. Its highest point stands 2,572 meters above sea level and the misty summit is the highest of the entire range. For centuries, both the mountain and the surrounding jungles have been a sanctuary for Buddhist masters seeking solitude in nature. Numerous Buddhist temples are spread across the peaks and slopes, most dedicated to Maitreya and Buddha Shakyamuni. Maitreya, or The Next Buddha, is the patron Bodhisattva of Mount Fanjing.

In an area of some 120 square kilometres, not far from the picturesque Mount Huangshan, and located in Qingyang County, Anhui Province in China, is a haven that is nestled between the Yangtze River and the Yellow Mountain. Here, in a verdant landscape of pine trees and walls of tall swaying bamboo, lined with streams, waterfalls, hidden caves and rocky configurations, 99 peaks rise up from the soil and protrude through the clouds. The tallest peak is called Shiwang Peak (Peak of Ten Kings) that sits at an elevation of 1,342 metres above sea level. This summit is well known, as are eight of the nearby peaks – Tiantai Peak, Tianwang Peak, Lianhua Peak, Duxiu Peak, Luohan Peak, Wulao Peak, Fuhu Peak and Furong Peak.

Together, the peaks are known as Jiu Hua Shan (Mount Jiu Hua) or the Nine Glorious/Heavenly Mountains and are considered to be the abode of the Bodhisattva Ksitigarbha, known as Dizangwang Pusa in Chinese.

Jiu Hua Shan is one of the four holiest sites of Chinese Buddhism. The other three are Mount Wutai in Shanxi province, Mount Emei in Sichuan and Mount Putuo in Zhejiang.

Pu Tuo Shan, also known as Mount Putuo is located on an island southeast of Shanghai, in the Zhoushan prefecture of Zhejiang province in China. Pu Tuo Shan is believed to be the bodhimanda (place of awakening) of Avalokitesvara, more familiarly known as Guan Yin in China. Due to this believe, Pu Tuo Shan gained its place as one of the five holy mountains in Buddhism and flocks of pilgrims visit this place all year round to get blessings.

During the Tang Dynasty, Pu Tuo Shan became the center of Chinese Buddhism solely for Guan Yin, while the silk road was being constructed and developed. Ever since then, Pu Tuo Shan has been the main destination for all Guan Yin worshipers. Guan Yin (or Chenrezig, or Avaloketishvara), resides as the patron Bodhisattva on Mount Putuo.

Pu Tuo Shan consists of many temples and monastic institutes, besides being a place of study for the holy Dharma, it is also a place where many people visit for geological, marine and forestry studies.

The Unknown

The Known and unknown are both feared,
Known is being comfortable and stagnant,
The unknown may be growth and opportunities,
One shall never know if one fears the unknown more than the known.
Who says the unknown would be worse than the known?
But then again, the unknown is sometimes worse than the known. In the end nothing is known unless we endeavour,
So go pursue all the way with the unknown,
because all unknown with familiarity becomes the known.
~Tsem Rinpoche

His Holiness Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche makes offering of khata to Dorje Shugden.
Trijang Rinpoche never gave up his devotion to Dorje Shugden no matter how much Tibetan government in exile pressured him to give up. He stayed loyal inspiring so many of us.

What the meat industry figured out is that you don't need healthy animals to make a profit.
Sick animals are more profitable... farms calculate how close to death they can keep animals without killing them. That's the business model. How quickly they can be made to grow, how tightly they can be packed, how much or how little can they eat, how sick they can get without dying... We live in a world in which it's conventional to treat an animal like a block of wood. ~ Jonathan Safran Foer
