Actor Steven Seagal Keen to Rebuild Europe’s First Buddhist Temple in Belgrade

Jan 15, 2016 | Views: 689

Dear friends around the world,

I was very happy to come across these articles about Mr Steven Seagal planning to rebuild the Buddhist temple in Belgrade. I am reproducing these articles here for educational purposes as well as creating awareness towards this noble goal.

The Kalmyks originally came to Yugoslavia (now Serbia) during WWI to escape communism in their Russian Republic of Kalmykia. They were escaping the Bolsheviks. My grandparents, relatives and many of their communities migrated to Belgrade at that time. The Kalmyks wanted religious freedom in their practice of Buddhism. The Yugoslavians at that time gave full freedom and welcomed the Kalmyks to their communities. The Kalmyks worked hard, saved their money, farmed, and built their temple for worship. The Kalmyks and the Yugoslavians got along very well and the Kalmyks kept up their cultural heritage.

My mother Dana Bugayeff and her siblings (Uncle Naran, Uncle Giga, Aunt Elena and Aunt Meda) were all born in Yugoslavia. My mother loved Yugoslavia and often spoke of the old country. They had their house, land, and planted many vegetables. My mother, her siblings and many Kalmyks spoke fluent Yugoslavian as well as Kalmyk language. Their life was idyllic and happy till WWII where there was much upheaval and once again they had to migrate to the USA which became their final stop. Other ethnic Yugoslavians also migrated and settled in Howell, New Jersey along with my mother. They were our neighbors. Our Yugoslavian neighbors were warm, friendly, giving and were very simple and kind people. Some of my best childhood friends were Yugoslavians. My mother spent hundreds of hours visiting our Yugoslavian neighbors, enjoying Yugoslavian coffee, food and conversation about the old country. I really loved our Yugoslavian neighbors and their warmth.

While in Belgrade, prior to WWI, the Kalmyk community built their beautiful Buddhist temple which later was destroyed. They had their Kalmyk monks and geshes, and held traditional religious services. I have never visited this place but would like to one day. I am so happy to hear Mr Seagal will be rebuilding this historical Buddhist temple which meant so much to the Kalmyk community. I certainly would like to visit when completed. It would be surreal to visit a place where my mother was born and I heard so much about. I wonder if there are still Kalmyks living in Belgrade today. My mother prior to passing never had the chance to visit Belgrade and I always wondered why.

I offer my prayers to the supreme Buddha that this noble project by Mr Steven Seagal will reach fruition without much obstacles and I thank him from my heart. A Buddhist temple will indeed be such a blessing for the community in Belgrade and a testament to the Kalmyk people who brought Buddhism to Europe and America.

Sincerely,
Tsem Rinpoche

Actor Steven Seagal Keen to Rebuild Europe’s First Buddhist Temple in Belgrade

Recently granted Serbian citizenship, Hollywood action star, musician, and Buddhist Steven Seagal has expressed a strong interest in reconstructing Europe’s oldest Buddhist temple in the Serbian capital of Belgrade.

Seagal was granted Serbian citizenship in a special decree signed by the country’s prime minister, Aleksandar Vucic, on 8 January. The decree followed several visits to Serbia in recent months, during which the 63-year-old martial artist met the prime minister and President Tomislav Nikolic, and suggested that he could open an aikido school in Belgrade. The government also invited Seagal to train Serbian police in aikido. The actor, a friend of Russian president Vladimir Putin, said in a recent interview that he has big plans in Serbia: “I can do a lot here . . . I really want to bring Hollywood to Serbia. I want to bring the whole film community here. I want to build great, sort of a Hollywood-film infrastructure here.” (Sputnik International)

Europe’s oldest Buddhist temple, which was consecrated in December 1929, was constructed in Belgrade by political refugees from Buddhist Kalmykia in southwestern European Russia. Two years later, the street on which the temple was built was renamed Buddhist Street, and in 1934, the temple was presented with a golden statue of the Buddha from Japan. The temple was heavily damaged during World War II, and later demolished. The modern-day Republic of Kalmykia, a Russian federal subject of less than 300,000 people, is the only European region in which Buddhism is practiced by the majority of the population. As Tibetan Buddhists, the Kalmyks regard His Holiness the Dalai Lama as their spiritual leader.

Seagal, a 7th-dan black belt in aikido, rose to fame as the star of a series of martial arts movies, including Above the Law, Under Siege, and On Deadly Ground. While his acting career has been on the wane in recent years, with many of his recent films being released direct to video, Seagal has branched out with a variety of other projects, including in the fields of music and law enforcement, and several business ventures.

In February 1997, Kyabje Drubwang Pema Norbu Rinpoche (Penor Rinpoche), a lama from Palyul Monastery in eastern Tibet (one of the six mother monasteries of the Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism) and head of the Nyingma school from 1991 to 2001, announced that Seagal was a tulku, specifically an incarnation of Chungdrag Dorje, a 17th-century tertön (treasure revealer) of the Nyingma tradition.

While Seagal’s recognition was a source of some controversy in the international Buddhist community, Penor Rinpoche responded by saying that the actor had merely been recognized, but not enthroned as a tulku. “In the case of Steven Seagal, he has been formally recognized as a tulku, but has not been officially enthroned. He has also not undergone the lengthy process of study and practice necessary to fully realize what I view as his potential for helping others,” Penor Rinpoche said in a statement. Seagal to Bring Hollywood Celebrities, Build Buddhist Temple in Serbia

After receiving Serbian citizenship, US actor Steven Seagal plans to keep busy: he plans to develop Serbian cinematography, promote martial arts and even build an ancient Buddhist temple in Belgrade, Seagal told Sputnik in an exclusive interview.

Over the past weekend, Seagal was granted Serbian citizenship after the country’s Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic signed a special decree on January 8. The decision came after Seagal made several visits to the country over the past few months.

Seagal has big plans for Serbia. He said he asked for Serbian citizenship because he plans to develop the country.

“I can do a lot here… I really want to bring Hollywood to Serbia. I want to bring the whole film community here. I want to build great, sort of a Hollywood-film infrastructure here,” Seagal told Sputnik.

In Seagal’s opinion, Serbia has a great variety of different landscapes that would allow filmmakers to shoot any scenes in the country.

At the same time, Seagal wants to take charge of Aikido in Serbia. Seagal has practiced the Japanese martial art since he was seven years old, and has used his abilities many times in movies. Previously, it was reported that Seagal, who is an Aikido 7th Dan Black Belt, was invited to train Serbian police forces in Aikido.

Lastly, Seagal said he was extremely interested in the restoration of Europe’s oldest Buddhist temple, allegedly built by the Kalmyk people. Currently, Seagal is doing research and studying the fate of the Kalmyk people in Serbia. If the Kalmyks had in fact built the temple in Belgrade, then the newly naturalized Serbian citizen plans to ask the country’s Prime Minister to rebuild the ancient Buddhist holy place.

The first Buddhist temple in Europe was built in Belgrade
by LJILJANA BEGOVIC, 2013/04/03

The Kalmyk Temple in Belgrade was the first Buddhist temple in Europe. (Photo: Wikipedia)

Although China is thousands of kilometers away from Serbia, there is a historical connection between the two countries. The first Buddhist temple in Europe was located in the Serbian capital of Belgrade.

Last week, the Confucius Institute of Belgrade and the Qigong Association of Serbia organized a lecture about the Kalmyks and Buddhists who lived and worked in Serbia at the gallery “O3one“ in Belgrade.

Kalmyk people or Kalmyks as they are called, began to migrate from their homeland of Dzhungaria in the seventeenth century. They traveled west until they reached the Don plain, where they raised cattle and lived a nomad life. The Kalmyks fought as elite horsemen in the Russian army, side-by-side with the Cossacks, defending the vulnerable southern borders of the empire. Since then, the area northwest of the Caspian Sea has been called “Kalmykia“ (today it is a republic in the Russian Federation), and there the Kalmyks struggled to gain autonomy.

In several waves, through the coastal towns located on the Adriatic Sea, many of them (around 400) came to Belgrade, where they formed the largest Kalmykia colony in Europe. At the beginning, they received assistance from the State Commission of the Russian emigrants in Yugoslavia, but as they were very poor, they also often worked in the toughest manual labor jobs to earn extra income. Most of the Kalmyks that came to Belgrade found employment at the brick factory and moved into cheap temporary settlements that were built around these brickyards in the periphery of town.

Kalmyks are Buddhists – lamaists – by religion and their supreme religious leader is the Tibetan Dalai Lama. With the help of the state and city, in just a few months in 1929 in Belgrade, a Buddhist temple was built to serve their religious needs. It was the first Buddhist temple in Europe. The ceremony of consecration in the presence of all of the Belgrade Kalmyks and many of their Serbian friends was held on 12th December in 1929. Two years later, in 1931, the street where the first Buddhist temple had been built was named Buddhist Street.

Buddhist temples all over the world are famous for their statues of Buddha. In 1934, the Belgrade temple also received its own golden statue of Buddha from Tokyo.

Buddhist past remembered

The Buddhists who lived in Belgrade were known as hard-working, humble and honest people who especially loved horses. They were the best coachmen and jockeys in Belgrade. At that time, many of the Buddhists kept their horses in the fields of suburban Belgrade. That is why that part of the city came to be called “Konjarnik,“ which means “a place for horses.”

The Kalmyks were considered good-natured people of the Buddhist religion, but they were also known to dislike communists and Bolsheviks. It was because of them that the Kalmyks had to leave their homeland. For this reason, the Kalmyks supported those who were against communism, and their closest allies were in Germany.

Basically, Hitler and the Nazis believed that the Aryan people originated from Tibet. This is why the whole story about the mystique of Tibet, Asia, secret societies and religion were closely associated with the Buddhists, especially the Tibetan branch of Buddhism. And when you see that connection, it is easy to explain why the Kalmyks saw great danger in the Bolsheviks.

The Bolshevik Revolution forced the Kalmyks out of Russia, and the same thing happened to them in Serbia. The Kalmyks, the great enemies of the Bolsheviks, did not want to wait for the Red Army to invade Belgrade, and so in late September 1944, they took all the holy shrines from the temple with them and fled Serbia to either Western Europe or the US.

During the combats of 1944, the Belgrade Buddhist temple was partially destroyed, and the new regime felt that since there weren’t any Buddhists left in Belgrade anymore, there was no need for a Buddhist temple. First, the dome of the temple was demolished and the ground floor was turned into a culture center, but afterwards the entire temple was taken down. There was nothing left of the first Buddhist temple in Europe, except for historical records, pictures and memories.

The Confucius Institute of Belgrade and the Serbia Qigong Association plan to preserve those memories in a museum to be built on the old site of the temple. There, visitors would be able to learn all about the first Buddhist temple in Europe.

Wonderful for actor Steven Seagal who is Buddhist, having granted Serbian citizenship, decided to has expressed a strong interest in reconstructing Europe’s oldest Buddhist temple in the Serbian capital of Belgrade. He is also a Hollywood action star, musician, and intend to bring celebrities into Serbia as well. Using his fame as an actor he wanted to do more in helping the Serbian . In fact he is recognized as a tulku, but has not been officially enthroned. Having a Buddhist temple will benefit those Buddhist , preserving their culture and religious heritage of the Kalmyks. The Kalmyks had a beautiful history connected to the Buddhist living in China. So having this temple will help to spread Buddhism further into eastern Europe.
Thank you Rinpoche for this sharing.

I am really happy to hear that Steven Seagal is taking steps to bring the Dharma to a place like Yugoslavia. When a dharma center is built then the dharma can grow and many people can get access to the dharma teachings.
I rejoice that Steven Seagal is taking an active role to grow the dharma, and using his fame and connections to bring the dharma to a region that has no dharma.

  3. Joy on Jan 25, 2016 at 11:16 pm

Great to know that Mr. Seagal is keen to rebuild Europe’s first Buddhist temple. This can revive Buddhism in Belgrade and even Europe. It’s nice to see celebrities give back to society in a positive way but what Seagal will be doing is even better because by rebuilding a Dharma temple. It can bring benefit to so many people in this and future lives. It can plant seeds of Enlightenment to so many. How meritorious for Him to be such a virtuous deed.

I really hope this project of his will pull through, that there will no obstacles towards this project and everything is smooth so that Dharma can be revived and spread in Europe again. Yes it would be awesome to visit this temple once it is rebuilt.

  4. Shelly tai on Jan 21, 2016 at 3:45 pm

Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this great news, rebuilding a holy place is important because then it will help the holy Buddha teaching to spread to more people is a very kind act that Mr Steven Seagal has proposed this plan to the PM of Serbia.

  5. Jutika Lam on Jan 20, 2016 at 9:54 pm

Steven Seagal’s plans for Serbia is really something wonderful.

It is great to see that Steven is optimistic to expanding the movie businesses beyond Hollywood to Serbia.

Not many people might know much about Serbia right now but with Steven Seagal’s plans of turning it in to a global movie hub like Hollywood, the world would get to know about Serbia seeing that when much awaited movies start being filmed and produced from Serbia, more people would be curious to know about the country.

Apart from doing this for the movie industry, it is even better to know that Steven Seagal will also be doing something for Buddhism, which is the reconstructing of Europe’s oldest temple.

Restoring old buildings is not an easy task because the materials used to build the particular building last time may no longer be available anymore and alternatives have to be sourced.

Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this news!

  6. Sarah on Jan 20, 2016 at 4:47 pm

It is very kind of Steven Segal to offer to rebuild the first Buddhist temple in Belgrade. It is important to preserve this cultural and religious heritage of the Kalmyk people. If there are still Kalmyks living in Serbia, then this could serve as a place of worship for the community.

  7. Lucas Roth on Jan 19, 2016 at 7:24 pm

It is so kind of him to do that and he is aware of the significance of that temple, which I find impressive. The Buddhist religion is all over the world and it is a good one as it improves your understanding of life and how you live yourself. I am happy that he is a good promoter of a good thing that can benefit others, he is helping to spread the Dharma.

Also, I would like to add, that he is a good famous person. (If that is a fair thing to say) I say that because he uses his fame and fortune to build something good and promote something good. Something that people can benefit from hearing, seeing or knowing about. That is a smart and good thing to do. So good job to Steven Seagal for that.

  8. Julia Tan on Jan 17, 2016 at 10:49 pm

Thank you Mr Seagal for the great wish to rebuilt the Kalmyk Temple in Belgrade which is the first Buddhist temple in Europe. This is like restoring the history of Tibetan Buddhism in Europe and reconnect back the Kalmyks to Belgrade once again. I rejoice and looking forward to visit the temple in the near future.

  9. Lin Mun on Jan 17, 2016 at 2:28 pm

    Dear Rinpoche ,

Thank you for sharing this interesting article and heartwarming action by Steven Seagal. By rebuilding this first Buddhist temple in Europe it will definitely encourage more people to know and learn more about Buddhism.

I wish him great success in his dharma work and bringing more people to know the cultural of Tibetan Buddhism.

  10. Stella Cheang on Jan 16, 2016 at 9:28 pm

The history and culture of Kalmyks are really new to me; hence I find this blogpost intriguing to say the least. While I rejoice in Steven Seagal’s virtuous deed in rebuilding the Kalmyks’ temple, it also dawn upon the fact that it was human who destroyed the heritage of another human race all because of self-serving interest and politics. As a species, we should really reflect on ourselves and think hard on how to educate people around us and next generation to stop any form of persecution against another human being.

In Steven Seagal’s capacity as an international superstar, rebuilding Europe’s first Buddhist temple (in Belgrade) is a good way to let the general public remember Kalmyk people who brought Buddhism to Belgrade decades ago. It is also news to be that Steven Seagal is a recognized Tulku. I wish him all the best in his endeavor and may his deed create causes for more people in the Belgrade region to be blessed by the 3 Jewels and have the opportunity to learn dharma.

Thank you very much, Rinpoche for this insightful sharing. I have learnt something new.

    Humbly, bowing down,

For centuries, Buddhists travel around the world to share the Buddha’s beautiful teachings with some decided to settle down to blend the teachings into the local culture. It is due to the kindness of these people that the Buddha’s teachings is available until today.

In order to preserve the precious teachings, the building of the Buddhist temples or institutions is necessary as the temple is the point for people who share similar interests to gather to learn, study and practise the Buddha’s teachings.

Seagal’s initiation and interest in restoring Europe’s oldest Buddhist temple Belgrade allowing Buddhism to pick up again from where it was left, re-introducing this ancient wisdom to the modern world, thus giving the locals an opportunity to trace their culture as well as discovering the richness of the Buddha’s teachings. Thank you!

It’s interesting to know about the Kalmyk people and their history because it showed how prevalent Tibetan Buddhist was back then. Steven Seagal planning to rebuild Europe’s oldest Buddhist temple in Belgrade is a very virtuous project as it would revive and preserve the Kalmyk Buddhist heritage. On a spiritual level, it will plant seeds of Enlightenment to the new generation of the Kalmucks who visit the new temple.

Bringing the film community of Hollywood to Belgrade is a great idea because it will create a lot of media coverage for the project. Tibetan Buddhism in the US is very popular and is one of the fastest growing religions in the country. Raising the awareness of Tibetan Buddhism via the film community is one of the most effective methods in my opinion. The film industry has tremendous influence on the masses. And if the film community is inspired by the project, they would produce movies and documentaries about it.

I rejoice in Steven Seagal’s noble project.

Thank you Rinpoche, for this important knowledge what to look for signs that our doggie in pain. By knowing what to do and look out for, it will certainly help owners to detect the situation. When we spend time with them we could understand them better when they are in pain. Since they are not able to tell us we have the responsibility to take care of them. Pain can be difficult to detect in older dogs. Doggie in pain tend to be more vocal, it’s not always easy to spot immediately. They will only express in a number of ways such as whining, whimpering, growling, and so forth. It is important for dog owners to recognize subtle signs of pain in their dog. Hence reading this post have help me to observe my doggie better.

Inspiring post of a soldier turned Buddhist monk living in remote raw Ural mountains of Russia . With little and much hardship , they never give up feeling happy with their struggles. They managed to build a spiritual community up in the remote mountains. Led by Mikhail Sannikov, now known as Lama Dokshit, a veteran of the USSR’s Afghanistan war . He established a monastery on an isolated mountaintop named Shad Tchup Ling, meaning “place of practice and realisation. The monastery is visited by thousands yearly by tourist and locals.
But sadly this monastery was built on private lands own by a metallurgical mining company . Since 2016, it has been desired to demolish the Buddhist Shedrub Ling temple on Mount Kachkanar. The Buddhist community have tried many times to legalize the structures. The mining and others have claimed rights to the land. The Buddhist community was asked to leave then. The latest update dated second February 2021 is that the monastery will be under the security of the mining company where the Urals Buddhists are allowed back to the mountain only certain days of the week. May this inspiring monastery up in the mountains continue to flourish and may the mining company not demolished it .

Reading this post reminds me of my first pilgrimage trip to Wu Tai San . Went with my Kecharians brothers and sisters few years back. Great memories indeed, we are so fortunate given the opportunity to visit such holy site of Lord Manjushri and more it’s a pilgrimage.
Mount Wutai is a sacred mountain, one of the Four Sacred Mountains in Chinese Buddhism. Mount Wutai, known as ‘the five terrace mountain’, is the highest in Northern China believed to be the earthly abodes of Lord Manjushri, the Buddha of Wisdom. Great ….Each peak is inhabited by a different form of Manjushri. Its five main peaks, positioned east, south, west, north, and in the middle, embrace one another with broad and plain . From the 1st century AD to the early 20th century many temples have been built on the steep slopes . Besides the religious aspect, the beauty of rising and falling ridges of mountains, exotic rocks, are really amazing. The beautiful scenery there is a masterpiece of exquisite acts of nature, predominantly visible over the five main peaks. What really important is that Mount Wutai have a connection and vast history with many Tibetan lamas. From Sakya Pandita Kunga Gyeltsen to China’s most benevolent rulers, Emperor Kangxi .
Looking through those beautiful pictures tell us all.
Thank you Rinpoche and Karen for this wonderful sharing.

Ullambana is a Buddhist festival celebrated on the 15th day of the 7th lunar month according to the Buddhist calendar. It is a festival of liberation, as to provide salvation and relief to the ghosts and spirits of the dead. The Buddhist origins of the Ullambana Festival can be traced back to a story that originally came from India. By observing the practice of Ullambana we could liberate the deceased from the three suffering realms and allow the living to enjoy a life of abundance, good fortune and longevity. During this festival, offerings such as light, foods, prayers are made to the spirits of the dead and to the hungry ghosts. On this day, Buddhists offer prayers both to their departed forefathers and to their living parents and elders.
Great …at Kechara Forest Retreat , Bentong, two powerful and extensive pujas will be performed according to the tradition of Gaden Monastery. We are fortunate this year even though we are not able to attend at KFR , these pujas will be streamed live. The two powerful and extensive pujas is to remove obstacles and generate even more merits.
Thank you Rinpoche ,Sharon Ong and those who are involved making it possible.

Sad to see those homeless people and now with the pandemic , it is even more . Thousands of homeless people were housed in temporary shelters during Malaysia’s COVID-19 lockdown . We have to face and accept them they exist every where. Its true that the homeless and the people living on the streets, and many off them much as the thought might create discomfort and uneasiness among many of us. Occasionally, we might come across one sleeping on the pavement, smelly, begging, sitting on pavements with a vacant look in their eyes, walking with a sack and on the lookout for foods. Many have returned to the streets and are now living hand-to-mouth….
    H. E Tsem Rinpoche knows how it is to be homeless as he had experienced homelessness while teenager back in US. Tsem Rinpoche then set up Kechara Soup Kitchen (KSK) to distribute warmed foods from 15 packets to thousands . With many volunteers helping up during the distribution in downtown Kuala Lumpur . Not only serves foods , giving free hair cuts and KSK’s volunteer doctors provide free medical check ups, wound dressings. These are some of the services provided. KSK team has done a wonderful jobs. The homeless deserves a much more caring society. Thanks to KSK team and volunteers , keep it up.
Thank you Rinpoche and and Pastor Henry for this sharing.

The sacred and magnificent Jade Dragon Snow Mountain in Lijiang, Yunnan,at 5596 meters high is a famous snow mountain in China. It a tourist place for sightseeing, climbing, hiking, as it is covered by snow all year round. Having two new dharma centre in Yunnan province built has proven the growth of Dorje Shugden’s practice around the world. The first is a Dorje Shugden stupa in the Jade Dragon (Yulong) Snow Mountain area . The second is the rebuilding of Chosang Temple in Shangri-la. Looking at those pictures is a blessing , these temples at the snow- capped mountains will definitely benefits many and many more to come. I have been to Yunnan the famous snow mountains but not been to these 2 temples as mentioned in this post. It was a very nice challenging to go up the Jade Dragon Snow mountain. I did enjoyed a nice and mysterious view anyways. Loved to visit Yunnan again if given a chance.

Amazing………talented Korean artist painter An Jung-hwan creates realistic paintings that look like portals into vivid landscapes. His painstakingly meticulous technique simply amazing as perfect as a photograph . Each nature scene is so enticing in its clarity, he spends numerous weeks and countless hours working on a single painting. His stunning landscape paintings have been exhibited throughout Korea and Asia. He did held several solo exhibitions in Korea. Looking at those paintings in this post tells all…..so realistic. It could not see the difference whether its real or just paintings. Loves all his paintings.
Thank you Rinpoche for this sharing of a GREAT artist.

Unsung Hero of a Kenyan famer Patrick Mwalua who goes all the way out to save wild animals after witnessing a thirsty buffalo sniffing at an empty water hole during the drought. Since then he decided that he use his evenings to bring water to the animals to prevent them from going into the villages in search of water. The Kenyan hero have been supplying drinking water to animals. Patrick Kilonzo Mwalua known to many as the Waterman of Tsavo. He gained admiration over his passion to save the ecosystem by supplying clean drinking water at the Tsavo West National Park when the country was reeling from a prolonged dry spell. He found a cause that is more meaningful , giving new meaning to nature conservation. Inspiring indeed what he did is truly amazing travelling miles just to bring water to wild animals. Wish there were more like people Mwalua doing a good job saving animals.

Tunnels are echoey, dark and often damp are where the perfect places for ghostly encounters. That’s why so many tunnels are said to be haunted. They’re more than a little creepy as they are mostly abandoned railway tunnel with histories as former dwellings, burial grounds and so forth.
Interesting to know all about those most haunted rather creepy tunnels across the globe. Wow ….it never come across me that there so many of them . Reading through these post and seeing those creepy pictures tells all some still continue to echo today. The legend behind this haunting of each tunnel really will scare people away yet many tunnel still carries trains today. Many reports said that strange lights, ghostly appearances and, most often, groans of agony.
Thank you Rinpoche for this interesting read.

Tsunmo Tsel Monastery was once a summer residence for Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo and Princess Wencheng. Tsunmo Tsel is a Gelup monastery that was founded by Duldzin Drakpa Gyeltsen in 1420 in central Tibet. Interesting history of this Gelup monastery , located in Tsunmo Tsel village, Tibet where Dulzin Drakpa Gyaltsen’s body was placed in a stupa. It’s a beautiful Stupa and so blessed able to see it during my trip back in 2019. It seems that during renovations when his body was removed from the stupa, a fragrant scent permeated through the entire place. Well its a sign of his pure moral discipline being a close disciple of Lama Tsongkhapa. He was well-known for holding his vows . Interest read.

Interesting read of this Xiangshui (Perfume) Nunnery with an interesting legend behind it. All about a wealthy Han family having a daughter named Qiaoyun. She was considered to be as the emanation of Guan Yin, the Goddess of Mercy . As a young age, Qiaoyun was already inclined towards Buddhism, refusing arranged marriage as her interest is in Buddhism. Her life story tells all how she managed to save many lives in the village even before she was ordained a nun. Great explanation of the significance of fragrant scent in Buddhism and sharing of the 33 manifestations of Guan Yin . Loved those pictures of Quan Yin , beautiful indeed and seeing it is a blessing.

Yes this 12-year-old Mongolian boy name Uudam is really amazing . He sang beautifully in his song ‘Mother in the dream’ in the China got talent contest. He rendered the song full of emotion and delivered it deep from his heart, looking at his expression. His singing touched every audience and the judges as well . Even though not many people understand the lyrics in Mongolian yet his singing voice simply amazing and emotion . Such a great song indeed. All I could say he is truly talented .

Shocking reading this again as it happened in Malaysia . At the Petknode Cat Boarding center or pet’s hotel in Damansara Damai and Sungai Buloh had been allegedly abandoned and starved 200 cats and a dog . Anxious pet owners and animal lovers came to the rescue. Over 100 cats and a dog were rescued from the Damansara Damai location ,while another 100 cats at Sungai Buloh. 300 starved and 13 died- Many outraged Malaysians including celebrities , social media Facebook groups expressed their anger over it. Hopefully stern punishment should enforced on those who abused animals. Animals should be given a chance to live, love by all, they are one of us . Teaching kids early to love ,care for animals should be taught in schools.

Great teachings from this post to practice the Dharma well . We have to practice the preliminaries well before going further and deeper. The purpose of the preliminaries practice is to purify negative karma and accumulate merit . Once the teachings become realisation, and we prepare the mind for advance practices. Reading this will help us to realise the importance of learning dharma, transforming our mind and putting into practice. We should not of the importance of human rebirth and impermanence and all about at the time of death.
Preliminary practice is Dharma practice. I have still plenty to learn from this knowledgeable post. Reading this over and over again to understand better.
Thank you Rinpoche for this great teachings.

The Unknown

The Known and unknown are both feared,
Known is being comfortable and stagnant,
The unknown may be growth and opportunities,
One shall never know if one fears the unknown more than the known.
Who says the unknown would be worse than the known?
But then again, the unknown is sometimes worse than the known. In the end nothing is known unless we endeavour,
So go pursue all the way with the unknown,
because all unknown with familiarity becomes the known.

What the meat industry figured out is that you don't need healthy animals to make a profit.
Sick animals are more profitable... farms calculate how close to death they can keep animals without killing them. That's the business model. How quickly they can be made to grow, how tightly they can be packed, how much or how little can they eat, how sick they can get without dying... We live in a world in which it's conventional to treat an animal like a block of wood. ~ Jonathan Safran Foer

Underprivileged residents of two PPRs in Kuala Lumpur recently received a total of 427kg from our longterm surplus produce sponsor, Lotuss Stores (formerly Tesco Stores). The 65 families are our regular beneficiaries, and are grateful to receive fresh vegetables on a consistent basis right at their doorstep. One of our recipients, Rajeswari, 52, single mother of 2 children, shared that she stopped receiving welfare aid due to unforeseen circumstances. Her words: "Saya cakap untuk Kechara [Soup Kitchen] banyak terima kasih sebab kasi makanan. Dan lebih mau tolong orang lain yang susah seperti saya". Our heartfelt thank-you goes to Lotuss Stores for being a dependable source of food aid and for #helpingthepoor with us. #kecharafoodbank #makingadifference #kitajagakita #charity #foodbank #bantuan #ngomalaysia #givingback #strongertogether - Vivian @ Kechara Soup Kitchen

#kecharafoodbank: In collaboration with Good Shepherd Services (GSS) based in Ipoh, we travelled to Buntong with food rations for 33 families. Some of the food items given include rice, noodles, cooking oil and biscuits; in total, we gave 726kg of food to these beneficiaries from the underprivileged class. We are glad to have been able to contribute, especially to families with children and in poor living conditions. We wish to thank GSS for alerting us about those in need, and we look forward to extending more support in the future together with this not-for-profit organization doing good work. - Vivian @ Kechara Soup Kitchen
