Hollywood Legend Anna May Wong

Apr 25, 2016 | Views: 1,286

Anna May Wong (3rd January 1905 – 3rd February 1961) was the first Chinese- American actress and the first Asian American to have gained international recognition.

This is an amazing lady, who starred in 55 films, 100 years ago. She broke into Hollywood and became an international star. She has fought through racism, stereotypes, and insults that were thrown at her. Yet, she has triumphed as a powerful, sultry, charismatic superstar.

She is someone that we should look up to in the face of adversity. She has never given up on her dreams despite all the challenges that she faced, no matter how lonely that road to success was for her.

Big thanks to Pastor Shin Tan and Beatrix for helping me with editing and uploading of this article. Through the help of Pastor Shin, this article is finally live for all of us to read. Also, I would like to thank H.E. Tsem Rinpoche for giving me the opportunity to learn about this beautiful actress and to share about her on Rinpoche’s blog.

Background and Childhood

Anna May Wong was born as Wong Liu Tsong (meaning “yellow willow frost”) in Flower Street in Los Angeles, one block away from Chinatown, in an integrated community of Chinese, Irish, German and Japanese residents. She was born to a second-generation Chinese-American parents, Wong Sam Sing (father) and Lee Gon Toy (mother), and among the family of seven, she was the second child.

In 1910, her family moved to a neighbourhood on Figueroa Street where they were the only Chinese in that area, living alongside with mostly Mexican and Eastern European families. The move to the new neighbourhood helped Anna to assimilate better into the American culture. Together with her older sister, they attended public school, but then were forced to transfer to a Presbyterian Chinese school when they were the target of racial taunts from other students. Classes attended were taught in English, but Anna would go for Chinese language classes on Saturday afternoons.

It was around the same time where U.S. motion picture productions began to relocate from the east coast to Los Angeles, where movies were constantly shot around Anna’s neighbourhood. Very quickly, she became engrossed in cinematography where she would rather miss school and spent her lunch money in the cinema and Nickelodeon movie theaters. Her father was not happy with her taking much interest in films as he was worried that it may affect her studies. Anna pursued her acting career despite the objections from her father, which was understandable because being an actress at that time  was not seen as something reputable. Despite the stigma and objections, she insisted following her passion in pursuing her acting career.

Ever since Anna was nine, she would constantly be on the lookout for film producers and whenever she came across one, she would beg on bended knees in hope that she would be given some movie roles. Due to her innate nature of being highly curious and agog about her career, she eventually earned the nickname “Curious Chinese Child” (C.C.C). At 11, she came up with her own stage name of Anna May Wong.

Early Life

Anna was working at Hollywood’s Ville de Paris departmental store when Metro Pictures needed 300 female extras to appear in The Red Lantern (1919) by Alla Nazimova. Without her father’s knowledge, Anna landed a role as an extra carrying a lantern. She worked for the next two years as an extra in various movies.

While still in school, Anna came down with an illness, chorea, which caused her to miss school for months. Just when she was on the verge of an emotional breakdown, her father took her for Traditional Chinese Medication and her condition  improved.

Anna’s philosophy throughout life was strongly influenced by thoughts such as Confucianism and teachings of Laozi.

In 1921, Anna May Wong dropped out of Los Angeles High School to pursue her dreams of being a full time actress. She was determined to succeed as an actress and gave herself 10 years to do so.

“I was so young when I began that I knew I still had youth if I failed, so I determined to give myself 10 years to succeed as an actress.” ~ Anna May Wong, Motion Picture Magazine (1931)

In the same year, Anna received her first role on screen for Bits of Life, where she played the role of the wife of Lon Chaney’s character, Toy Ling. Later Anna recalled the memory of the film fondly as it was the only time where she played the role of a mother.  Her appearance on Bits of Life earned her a cover photo on the British magazine Picture Show.

Fame

In 1922, at the age of 17, Anna played her first lead role in The Toll of the Sea written by Frances Marion. The story of the film was based loosely on Madame Butterfly. Throughout this film, Anna was recognized for her great acting skills.

“Miss Wong stirs in the spectator all the sympathy her part calls for and she never repels one by an excess of theatrical ‘feeling’. She has a difficult role, a role that is botched nine times out of ten, but hers is the tenth performance. Completely unconscious of the camera, with a fine sense of proportion and remarkable pantomimic accuracy… She should be seen again and often on the screen.” ~ The New York Times

Despite these reviews for her great acting, Hollywood was reluctant to create leading roles for Anna. Her ethnicity prevented the filmmakers in U.S. from seeing her as a suitable actress for leading roles.

“She built up a level of stardom in Hollywood, but Hollywood didn’t know what to do with her.” ~ David Schwartz, Chief Curator of the Museum of the Moving Image

During the next few years she spent her time in supporting roles providing “exotic atmosphere”, an example is the playing of the role of a concubine in Drifting (1923) by Tod Browning. The producers capitalise on Anna’s growing fame, but they only gave her supporting roles. Optimistic about her acting career, in 1923 Anna said “Pictures are fine and I’m getting along alright, but it’s not so bad to have the laundry back of you. So you can wait and take good parts and be independent when you’re climbing”.

At 19 years old, Anna was casted in a supporting role as a scheming Mongol slave in The Thief of Bagdad by Douglas Fairbanks. She played a stereotypical “Dragon Lady”, where her brief appearances on-screen caught the attention of the audiences and critics. This film grossed more than USD 2 million, and helped Anna make her debut to the public’s eyes. Conscious that Americans viewed her as “foreign born” despite the fact that she was born and raised in California, Anna began to cultivate a flapper image.

In March 1924, with plans to make films about Chinese mythology, Anna signed a deal creating Anna May Wong Productions. It was when her business partner was found engaging in dishonest practices that Anna sued him, and the company was dissolved.

It was soon evident that Anna’s career was and  would continue to be limited by the American anti-miscegenation law, which prevents her from sharing on-screen kisses with any person of another ethnicity, even if the character is an Asian being played by a white actor. The only leading Asian actor at that time was Sessue Hayakawa. Unless another Asian leading male actor can be found, Anna could never be the leading female actress.

Despite having offered exotic supporting roles, with favourable reviews, Anna became increasingly disappointed with her castings and began seeking other paths to success.

In early 1925, she joined a group of serial stars on a tour of the vaudeville circuits. When the tour became a failure, Anna together with the rest of the actors returned to Hollywood.

In 1926, Anna starred in The Dragon Horse (1927). This was one of the first films in the States to be produced with Chinese backing, the film was funded by San Francisco’s Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association. The setting of the story was during the Ming Dynasty and featured Asian actors playing the Asian roles of the film.

Hollywood’s Asian female characters were soon to be seen as two stereotypical characteristics, the naive and self-sacrificing “Butterfly”, or the sly and deceitful “Dragon Lady”.

Europe

In 1928, being tired of both the kind of typecast and how lead Asian roles are in favour of non-Asian actresses, Anna left Hollywood for Europe. She commented on Film Weekly in 1933 that “There seems little for me in Hollywood, because, rather than real Chinese, producers prefer Hungarians, Mexicans, American Indians for Chinese roles.”

Anna became an overnight sensation in Europe, starring in notable films like Song and Show Life (1928) and City Butterfly. In response to Song, The New York Times commented that Anna was “acclaimed not only as an actress of transcendent talent but as a great beauty”. The article noted that the Germans have overlooked Anna’s American background. “Berlin critics, who were unanimous in praise of both the star and the production, neglect to mention that Anna May is of American birth. They mention only her Chinese origins.”

In Vienna, she played the lead role in Tschun Tschi, an operatta, in fluent German.

“Fräulein Wong had the audience perfectly in her power and the unobtrusive tragedy of her acting was deeply moving, carrying off the difficult German-speaking part very successfully.” ~ An Austrian critic

While in Germany, her close relationship with several women throughout her life, especially with Marlene Dietrich led rumours of her being a lesbian, which was very damaging to her public reputation.

Anna’s first stage performance in UK was in the play A Circle of Chalk where London producer Basil Dean bought the play for Anna to appear with Laurence Olivier. Due to the criticism of her California accent that was described by one critic as a “Yankee squeak”, Anna sought vocal tutoring at Cambridge University, where she learnt a British accent.

In 1929, Anna made her last silent film Piccadilly, the first of the five English films which she had the leading role. The film created an impact in the filming screen in UK. Variety commented that she “outshines the star” Gilda Gray, the then top-billed actress.

Returning to Hollywood

During the 1930s, American studios were looking for fresh European talent when Anna caught their eye. She was then offered a contract with Paramount Pictures. Enticed by the promise of leading roles together with top billings, she returned to the States. Through the prestige and trainings that Anna received in Europe, she got the lead role on Broadway drama in On the Spot, where she did 167 performances. She later appeared in Dangerous to Know, where the play’s director wanted her to use stereotypical Japanese mannerisms that was derived from Madame Butterfly, in the performance of a Chinese character. Anna refused. Instead, Anna used her knowledge of Chinese style and gestures to imbue the character with a greater degree of authenticity.

Since her return to Hollywood in 1930, Anna repeatedly turned to stage and cabaret for creative outlet.

Keeping her promise to appear in a Josef von Sternberg film, Anna accepted a stereotypical lead role of Fu Manchu’s vengeful daughter in Daughter of the Dragon (1931). It was the last stereotypical “evil Chinese” role that Anna played. She starred appearances alongside with Sessue Hayakawa. Despite her starring role, it was not reflected in her pay cheque. She was paid USD 6,000.00, while Susse Hayakawa received USD 10,000.00, and Warner Oland  who appeared for only 23 minutes received USD 12,000.00.

Anna then used her stardom to make political statements. She became more outspoken in her advocacy in Chinese American causes and for better film roles.

In a 1933 interview for Film Weekly entitled “I Protest”, Wong criticized the negative stereotyping in Daughter of the Dragon, saying, “Why is it that the screen Chinese is always the villain? And so crude a villain– murderous, treacherous, a snake in the grass! We are not like that. How could we be, with a civilization that is so many times older than the West?”

In 1932, Anna appeared alongside with Marlene Dietrich as a self-sacrificing courtesan in Shanghai Express by Sternberg. This is where her sexually charged scenes with Marlene was spoken about by many commentators and fed rumours to the relationship of the two stars.

The Chinese press had been giving Anna’s career mix reviews where they were less than favourable to her performance in Shanghai Express. A Chinese newspaper had the headline: “Paramount Utilizes Anna May Wong to Produce Picture to Disgrace China” and continued, “Although she is deficient in artistic portrayal, she has done more than enough to disgrace the Chinese race.” Critics from China believed that Anna’s on-screen sexuality spread negative ideology about Chinese women. The most hurtful criticisms came from the Chinese government. However, the intellectuals and liberals were not as opposed to Wong, as they awarded the actress with an honorary doctorate in 1932.

In both America and Europe, Anna had been seen as a fashion icon for over a decade. In 1934, the Mayfair Mannequin society of New York voted her for “The World’s best-dressed woman”. In 1938, Anna was named “The World’s Most Beautiful Chinese Girl” by Look Magazine.

Her success in Europe and prominent role in Shanghai Express does not mean she can get what she wants. Due to the the anti-miscegenation rules, she was passed over for the leading female role of Lian Hua in The Son-Daughter, in favour of Helen Hayes. Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer said that Anna was “too Chinese to play a Chinese” in the film. Hays Office also stopped her from romantic scenes as the male lead was Ramon Novarro, who was not an Asian.

After which, Anna was scheduled for the role of a mistress to a corrupt Chinese general in The Bitter Tea of General Yen (1933), but the role later went to Toshia Mori.

Returning to Europe

Disappointed by Hollywood, Anna returned to Britain where she stayed for nearly three years, appearing only in four films as she toured Scotland and Ireland as a part of vaudevilla show. She also appeared in King George Silver Jubilee programme in 1935.

In 1934, her film Java Head, although considered as a minor effort, was the only film that Anna kissed the lead male character, her white husband in the film. Anna’s biographer commented that it might be the reason why the film remained as Anna’s personal favourites.

While being in London, Anna met with Mei Lanfang, one of the most famous stars of Beijing Opera. Anna had long interest in Chinese opera. Lanfang offered to instruct Anna if ever she visited China.

Hollywood

Anna returned to the States in June 1935 with the goal of obtaining the role of O-lan, the leading female character in MGM’s film version of The Good Earth. Anna has made known her desire to play O-lan in a film version of the book since the novel was published in 1931. Several Los Angeles newspapers had been routing Anna as the best choice for the part since 1933. Because O-lan’s husband, Wang Lung, was to be played by Paul Muni of European descent, the studio never seriously considered Anna for the role of O-lan. The Chinese government had advised against casting Anna for the role. A Chinese advisor to MGM said that “whenever she appears in a movie, the newspapers print her picture with the caption ‘Anna May again loses face for China’ “.

She was instead offered the part of Lotus, a deceitful song girl who helps to destroy the family and seduces the oldest son of the family. Anna turned down the role telling MGM head of production Irving Thalberg, “If you let me play O-lan, I will be very glad. But you’re asking me– with Chinese blood– to do the only unsympathetic role in the picture featuring an all-American cast portraying Chinese characters.” The role that Anna has hoped and wished for went to Luise Rainer, who won the Best Actress Oscar for her performance.

The refusal of MGM to consider Anna for the most high-profile of Chinese characters in U.S. film is remembered as “one of the most notorious cases of casting discrimination in the 1930s”.

Returning to her roots

After the disappointment of losing the role of O-lan in The Good Earth, Anna announced her plans for a year long tour of China where she visited her father and his family in Taishan. Her father and her siblings had returned to his hometown in China in 1934.

Alongside with Mei Lanfang’s offer to teach Anna, she wanted to learn more about the Chinese theater and through English translations to better perform Chinese plays before international audiences.

“… for a year, I shall study the land of my fathers. Perhaps upon my arrival, I shall feel like an outsider. Perhaps instead, I shall find my past life assuming a dreamlike quality of unreality.” Anna told San Francisco Chronicle before her departure

As Anna was travelling in China, she continued to receive strong criticism from the Chinese government and film community. She had many difficulties communicating in many area of China as she was raised with Taishan dialect rather than Mandarin. Anna has mentioned that due to the variety of dialects, Chinese sounded “as strange to me as Gaelic”, she thus had the strange experience of talking to her own people through an interpreter.

The pressure on Anna’s personal life being an international public personality took effect in the form of her outbursts of anger, sudden depression, excessive drinking and smoking.

On a trip to Hong Kong, she was greeted with a shout of “Down with Huang Liu Tsong– the stooge that disgraces China. Don’t let her go ashore” when she was rude to the awaiting crowd. She left for a short trip to Philippines, and joined her family in Hong Kong when the situation was better. She spent over 10 days with in her family village and some time in the neighbouring villages before she continued with her tour of China.

Back in Hollywood

After being back in Hollywood, Anna reflected on her year away in China and her career in Hollywood, “I am convinced that I could never play in the Chinese Theatre. I have no feeling for it. It’s a pretty sad situation to be rejected by Chinese because I’m ‘too American’ and by American producers because they prefer other races to act Chinese parts.”

In order to complete her contract with Paramount Pictures, Anna made many B-grade movies in the late 1930s. The roles that Anna played were the non-stereotypical roles which were publicised in Chinese-American press for positive images. Smaller budgeted films were bolder than high-profile releases which Anna used this to her advantage portraying successful, professional, Chinese-American characters.

These roles were proud and competent of the Chinese heritage, which were against the prevailing U.S. film portrayals of Chinese Americans of that time. These has led to even the approval of Anna’s film roles in Daughter of Shanghai (1937) and King of Chinatown (1939) by the Chinese consul to Los Angeles.

In Daughter of Shanghai, Anna played the lead role that was written for her as the heroine of the story, setting the plot into motion than a more passive character that was originally planned. Everything was so carefully tailored to Anna that at one point it was renamed as Anna May Wong Story.

“I like my part in this picture better than any I’ve had before… because this picture gives Chinese a break– we have sympathetic parts for a change! To me that means a great deal.” ~ Anna told Hollywood Magazine

Death

Anna continued to act in movies, series and documentaries from 1942 to 1960. In late 1953 she suffered an internal hemorrhage, which her brother attributed to the onset of menopause, her continued heavy drinking, and financial worries.

Anna was scheduled to play the role of Madame Liang in the film Flower Drum Song by Rodgers and Hammerstein, but was not able to do so due to her failing health.

For her contribution to the film industry, Anna May Wong received a star at 1708 Vine Street on the inauguration of the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1960. She is also depicted larger-than-life as one of the four supporting pillars of the “Gateway to Hollywood” sculpture located on the southeast corner of Hollywood Boulevard and La Brea Avenue, with the actresses Dolores del Río (Hispanic American), Dorothy Dandridge (African American) and Mae West.

On 3rd February 1961, Anna died of a heart attack as she slept at home in Santa Monica. She was 56. This happened two days after her final screen performance on the television show The Barbara Stanwyck Show.

Her cremated remains were placed together at her mother’s grave at Rosedale Cemetery in Los Angeles. The gravestone is marked with her mother’s name on top, and the Chinese names of Anna and her sister Mary along the sides of the gravestone.

Legacy

Through Anna’s image and career, she has left a legacy behind. She has helped to humanize Asian Americans to white audiences during a period of overt racism and discrimination. Although Anna’s films and her established public image as an Asian American citizen, the law at that time still discriminated against Asian immigrants and citizens. Through her example, it clearly shows that the culture of the East and the West are very different. Sadly, Anna May was not considered an Easterner or Westerner as she was rejected by the Chinese as being too American, and the Americans preferred other races to act in Chinese lead characters.

Like all pioneers breaking into a new field or going into a new space, these heroines and heroes rally have to face all sorts of obstacles on their path.

Yet they persevered, and overcome all the problems that was placed on her path. Looking at the many pictures of her, you could feel that she is one versatile actress and he acting was not 1 Dimensional at all. In the end she silenced all her critics, with her hard work, enthusiasm and talent.

Anna May Wong, what a poignant lady, and the epitome of oriental beauty. It is sad to see that there was so much discrimination towards her because of her origins. Despite her talents in acting, she was not casted as lead for many films because of her being asian. Such discrimination during that time would have been difficult to bear, because I am sure the racial discrimination would have been very strong then.

Her determination, tenacity and fight to continuously promote her origins for main roles is admirable and an inspiration to many like me reading her story now. No matter how much adversities she faced, she didn’t give up, and kept trying, even travelling to other countries to do so.

Thank you for highlighting this and writing about Anna May Wong.

My first impression on Anna May Wong was that this lady is so beautiful, why appear in Rinpoche’a blog, must be something worth reading . When I continue reading the article, I was inspired by her story because she is such a strong, determined, passionate and of course pretty lady. Surviving in the unfair and racist community is definitely not easy, without a strong determination as a backbone she couldn’t have made it.
Anna May Wong’s biography inspires and reminds me to be strong when I am in a dilemma which is against the tide.
Thank you Vinnie and team for sharing this inspiring biography. I will share this with my students.

Thank you Vinnie, for the very elaborate article on a strong-willed Chinese lady in American land.

The article truly shows how Anna May Wong strives to achieve her dreams and she accomplished it with her unwavering efforts. This can be reflected in our daily lives and our dreams and goals as well.

She did so well and even better, despite all the racism, criticism given to her throughout her career, and she never gave up at the slightest rejection.

Truly a remarkable lady in those periods that inspires us.

    Thank you.

What an interesting lady, Anna May Wong! She exudes such confidence and style. I am sure that she must have such a hard time in Hollywood especially when there is actually a rule that the Whites cannot marry or even kiss a Chinese on screen. Definitely to be admired for her courage of pursuing her dreams and making a success of it. After watching the short clip from Shanghai Dream, I will certainly search out this movie to watch as it has pique my interest.
Thanks Vinnie for this interesting article.

Thank you Viennie for the article about Anna May Wong. I don’t know her but i know her now through you. Very inspiring lady who pursued her dream until the end of her life. In those day to be a Chinese actress in Hollywood seems impossible. She was actually chasing a dream that was near impossible at that time. Not only she has to face the racism in America but also criticism from her own community in China. I can imagine how much challenges she faced at that time. but she never gave up.

  9. Grace Leong on May 3, 2016 at 11:55 pm

Love Anna May Wong”s style !! She is able to assume different characters and different looks quite easily; exuding loads of confidence for an Asian woman playing in the fields of a western country in that era !! Very courageous ! Very admirable indeed ! Thank you for sharing this inspiring story Vinnie 🙂

    Anna May Wong

    Anna May Wong 遇强越强的耐力, 值得敬佩。

  12. ECheah on Apr 28, 2016 at 12:52 pm

Wow what a classic beauty she was, full of grace and elegance. A very interesting read, thank you. She has an intriguing story, though subject to so much racism and discrimination, she never gave up but tried different avenues, detouring road-block after road-block to achieve her dream. I remember watching old films in my childhood where most of the Asian roles were played by non-Asians and I always thought them quite odd. In Hollywood, the Asian character had always been the villian or the stooge or the mafia or get killed off or there just for the Kung Fu enternainment value. Never the leading role and never the hero. Sadly this has not changed much till this day. It’s quite inconceivable to have a “coloured” character triumphing over a “non-coloured”, people just can’t take it, specifically the Hollywood mass audience. To have it otherwise, the film just won’t sell.
She was considered by the west to be too Chinese to play a Chinese, what a joke. And to China, too western to be assimilated. This kind of neither here nor there situation is kind of familiar and is what many “overseas Chinese” (as my colleagues in China call us) seem to be subjected to even today. Wherever we go, we are still considered “foreigners”, whether we like to admit it or not. Discrimination and unfair treatment is rife, coming from the strong sense of “I”. The them and us syndrome. Whatever is not in the likeness of “me” is inferior. As long as this remains to be true, there can never be peace and harmony in this world.

I’ve heard of Anna May Wong many years ago but didn’t really know her story. It’s really not easy being a Chinese actress in Hollywood during her days. It’s still not that much easier to get leading roles for Asians in Hollywood nowadays either.

What’s inspiring though is that she never gave up trying to get better roles in her acting career despite the overt racial discrimination. This is what made her successful as an actor.

Determination and resilience are qualities of all successful people.

Thank you for the amazing read, Vinnie! (And Pastor Shin and Beatrix too!) I truly admire Anna May’s courage and ability to fight for her believes especially in an era where white supremacy ruled. She will go into my book of female heroines.

Amazing lady, she was born in an era in USA where racism was rampant, where blacks could never be mainstream but were always portrayed as maids, and where Chinese were always stereotyped in movies as having slanted eyes, short and fat, and it couldn’t be worse when Hollywood always cast whites in Asian roles, like in “The Lost Horizon” and many more. Then came this one and only Anna May Wong, beautiful, gorgeous, sexy, spoke perfect American English. She totally shattered the white people’s stereotypical views about Chinese and showed them that the “white superiority complex” is just a delusion.

  16. Pastor Shin on Apr 26, 2016 at 8:52 am

Anna May Wong’s is a great actress, but more than that, she is a woman who lives life with gusto, courage and does not bow down to circumstances.

She is a pioneering artist who succeeded in a hostile environment – with the stigma about acting at that time, and opposition from his family. On top of that, racism in the industry. It’s only been in the last decade that Asian characters have begun regularly showing up in mainstream television and film, so imagine what it was during her time.

She was the first Asian female to become a star, achieving stardom at a time when bias against her race was crushing. Despite her passion, determination, beauty and talent, she could not overcome the racial prejudices to act in a role she wanted very much, as O-Lan in The Good Earth. When she was disgusted with the way Hollywood treated her, she went to Europe where she was a smash, starring in English, French and German films and stage productions, in which she fluently did all the dialogue.

Although she was honoured on the Walk of Fame, her story is a reflection of the inability of Hollywood to make use of a star of her potential, whose roles reinforced racist stereotypes during her time. It’s such a shame because she has so much star quality. Nevertheless, her life story is very inspiring, and I’m glad I get to know about this great woman.

  17. Pastor Adeline on Apr 26, 2016 at 5:24 am

I like Anna May Wong’s determination, passion and courage in doing what she feels right. She was born in a time where discrimination is accepted and well practised by the mass, yet Anna May Wong continued her path despite the difficulties. She was the pioneer in the film industry for Chinese recognised on the screen – a great deal because she created an entrance that was non-existence before her involvement. She is THE reference point for the film industry from there onwards.

Her life story sends an unyielding message: with determination and consistency, everything is possible.

Thank you Vinnie and everyone who worked on this inspiring article.

  18. Pastor Elena Khong Jean Ai on Apr 26, 2016 at 4:51 am

If you look at pictures of Anna May Wong, you can see why she made it at a time when no one else of Asian origin had such a breakthrough. She was gregarious, engaging, versatile, charismatic, and modern and yet timeless. I mean, just look at the picture below…she could be a celebrity of today, posing in a black and white shot at some kind of party!

But at the same time, her story makes me both sad and proud. Sad because Hollywood’s attitude towards actors of Asian origin has changed little over the last eight decades, so much so that her photos of yesteryear would still look ‘current’ today. Sad also that actors of Asian origin continue to be cast in stereotype roles, as hypersexualised vixens and temptresses, or martial artists.

Having said that, there’s also reason to be proud. Since Anna May Wong’s time, the Hay’s Code which prevented interracial mixing and marriages has since been abolished. The Hay’s Code was the barrier to Anna May’s greater success because it prevented her from being cast opposite actors of other races. There’s also reason to be proud because she wasn’t just a bubbleheaded celebrity, but someone with substance and who spoke up against the difficulties she faced in Hollywood. She fought the good fight against the Hollywood machine, and dealt with constant disappointments throughout her life. Despite these disappointments, she still fought to be treated equally and because of her determination and outspokenness, she opened the doors for the Asian actors of today.

Perhaps if she lived in this day and age, she would’ve seen greater success in her life 🙂

What an amazing lady. She went all the way to be an actor and was very beautiful and successful. She was for sure talented but she worked hard too. It was for sure not easy to be the only Chinese actor and to have to deal with restrictions, prejudices and negative comments up to racism. But nevertheless she didn’t give up.

But on the other hand the Chinese Community and even the Chinese Government criticized her. Growing up in a foreign country, like the US for Anna Mae Wong, she always looked different, but at the same time she was not accepted by her own people in her own country. Very challenging.

Thank you Vinnie for this amazing lifestory of the beautiful Hollywood legend Anna Mae Wong. She is a real inspiration.

I wish she would have found Dharma so that she could live her life in a more meaningful way.

  20. Beatrix Ooi on Apr 26, 2016 at 3:23 am

Anna May Wong was indeed a courageous and independent woman, she was courageous and was not afraid to speak up against the racism in the industry. I’m sure that it was not easy to deal with the racism but again, she was determined to change the situation around.

It’s very sad to know how racist remarks can damage someone so badly and at most of the time, driving people to suicidal. We must always be very careful with our speech as sometimes it may result in hurting someone else’s feelings. Whether if it was the intention or not, the damage has been caused.

Although towards the end of her life, she kind of lost her way and went into depression, she still created a legacy and her death was truly a great loss to the film industry. It’s too bad that hollywood did not appreciate her talent.

  21. kb thapa on Apr 26, 2016 at 1:34 am

who don’t fall love with her Great actress and one of the most beautiful women of all time.. she will be always remembered and honored.. She was talented, glamorous, and beautiful knowing her life life story really amazing..

  22. Joy on Apr 26, 2016 at 12:55 am

Wow Hollywood sure is political and racist. It’s amazing to read Anna May’s bio and how much she had to go through and put and still would not get what she deserves even though people loved her and she had raving reviews. On both sides she is being shun upon; from the West they would not give her leading roles and on the Chinese side, which I thought would be more supportive, they thought she was a disgrace to their culture. I can imagine the pain, pressure and disappointment which resulted to her heavy drinking and smoking and eventual death.

Her story reminds me of samsara’s delusion how so many people keep chasing after their ‘goals’ and ‘dreams’ thinking it would give them ‘happiness’ and the get so attached and affected by it that they go into self-destructive mode which what Anna did. In the end she suffered even more knowing that you work so hard for something that will disappoint and cause you pain. That is the nature of samsara and that is the nature of Hollywood unfortunately. If only Anna had some Dharma, she would probably be alive today.

However her perseverance and determination to be an actress is admirable. Unfortunately she had no dharma nor any good support. It also goes to show, just beauty alone will not help in life and it is in fact often used and exploited by others.

  23. Martin on Apr 25, 2016 at 11:21 pm

What an incredible story which is courageous and tragic at the same time. How Anna May Wong refused to be contained by the prejudice of the time and how she broke all the barriers is admirable and encouraging. Most people would quit after trying for a time but this amazing person lived an entire lifetime not allowing discrimination stand in her way.

I have not seen any of Anna May Wong’s movies but after this post I will make it a point to. Beyond her acting, is a giant of a character who pushed on with her passion despite being rejected by both the cultures that defined her. In this story, you can see how she kept trying various ways to be acknowledged in her craft and yet I do not read her ambition as being blind and obsessive. Instead I see a person who refused to be denied and powered on based on the integrity of her self-believe.

For that she is remembered and honored over half a century after her passing. Most people are forgotten weeks after their death because most people do not do much with their lives.

  24. Valentina Suhendra on Apr 25, 2016 at 5:29 pm

    Dear Vinnie

Thank you for this beautiful article about Anna May Wong. When reading the article, I could feel that she was a strong-headed girl who was very determined in pursuing her passion in acting. I wish though her passion had been directed to helping and benefiting others as well. Regardless, I believe her legacy is she has opened the road for future Asian actress to be successful in America and Europe.

In the end, a pile of remains under a dusty tombstone. How real is the woman in photos and films? What is glamor and fame? Where is the person who grasped? How real am I and the people I see around me?

    • Pastor David Lai on Apr 25, 2016 at 9:02 pm

Nice and informative blog post on Anna May Wong. She is such a charismatic and powerful actress but not many know about her. It’s sad that she had to endure such discrimination and was never fully appreciated for her talent. It would take another generation for an asian actress like her to be recognized in Hollywood. I see her as a tragic figure as she did not live long enough to see this.

Aside from that, I appreciate her persistent and tenacious character. I am sure she had to fight very intense personal and external battles to succeed. She had a lot of things going against especially the obstacle of her own ethnicity which is unavoidable. She was somehow caught in between east and west, neither really accepting and embracing her. Somehow, she broke through and succeeded when many orders could not or have long given up. In this manner, she is inspirational to all of us.

Venerable Ajahn Chah was a Thai Buddhist teacher of the Buddhadhamma and a founder of two major monasteries in the Thai Forest Tradition. Well respected and loved as a man of great wisdom, he was also instrumental in establishing Theravada Buddhism in the West. Interesting life story, how he chose to leave the settled monastic life and became a wandering ascetic. Walking across Thailand, lived in forests, caves and cremation grounds while learning from the meditation monks of the Forest of various monasteries. He wandered through the countryside in quest of quiet and secluded places for developing meditation. He even lived in tiger and cobra infested jungles, using reflections on death to penetrate to the true meaning of life. After years of wandering, Venerable Ajahn Chah established a monastery where he taught simple, practice-based form of meditation, and attracted a numerous of students including western foreigners. He was one of the greatest Dhamma teachers of the modern era. His wise teachings have continued to guide thousands of people along the path of Dharma. Venerable Ajahn Chah’s teachings of the Thai Forest Tradition gradually spread across all over the world. Several of Ajahn Chah’s Western students have since established monasteries throughout the world. Just in Thailand itself, there are more than 300 branch monasteries in Ajahn Chah’s tradition. Ven erable Ajahn Chah used his ill health as a teaching point, emphasizing that it was a living example of the impermanence of all things and reminded people to endeavour to find a true refuge within themselves. The legacy of Venerable Ajahn Chah’s teachings and legacy continues into the modern age.

Wonderful blog written on the practice of Kalarupa for us to understand better. As an emanation of Manjushri, Kalarupa’s practice helps us to destroy ignorance and to develop wisdom overcoming our anger and suffering . Awesome Kalarupa manifested in multiple forms to help sentient beings who personifies enlightenment by the conquest of anger. Kalarupa also regard as one of the three main Dharma protectors of the Gelugpa is extremely fierce and ugly, and tames all kinds of spiritual ugliness. The fierceness of his iconography teaches us to remind ourselves that all the causes and effects of anger arising from ignorance are dreadful and distorted.

Nepal is a very spiritual country, having a huge Dorje Shugden mural in Kathmandu, is indeed a big achievement for Kechara. Located on Charkhal Road in Dilli Bazaar, the mural can be found midway between our two Dorje Shugden chapels which are in Putalisadak and Chabahil. It is also very close to one of Kathmandu’s largest shopping malls. Many locals , tourist will be able to connect them to a powerful deity that is so closely associated with their culture. Well the mural not only beautiful but also full of symbolism and everyone merely by seeing it is blessed. Thanks to those talented artists and generous sponsors making it a success.

All the art of living lies in a fine mingling of letting go and holding on. Letting go helps us to live in a more peaceful state of mind and helps restore our balance. A reminder for us all to go of attachment and meditating on impermanence and emptiness. We are to relinquish the domination of our ego and its habits to transform ourselves. A great reminder not to waste our previous life.

We are members of the Buddhist Temple in Taman Desa Jaya, Kepong, Kuala Lumpur and we have been issued membership by the president (DATUK YIP KUM FOOK), we are very sad because we are the foundation of this Temple

Now we can know who is always messing with people, and he always cheats money and women, he even uses Buddhism to find money.

Also, need to be careful with his brother-in-law (Simon Low Kok Meng) because he is a spy (CID) for DATUK YIP KUM FOOK and we will write some letters to AGONG SULTAN IBRAHIM IBN ALMARHUM SULTAN ISKANDAR as soon as possible.

The matriarchal cultures of the grandmothers have specific symbolism of animism shamanism, such as the horse, especially the blue horse, and the deer. These are two main symbols of a shaman woman and you can find them in many cultural folk lore, especially the Russian, Slavic, Siberian, Nordic, Finland, and Norway. It’s nice to see the Matriarchal Shaman Animism diety represented in Chinese.

An inspiring act of a selfless Lama feeding strays whether its night or day. Truly an example for us all to feed those lonely strays . Yes I do agree compassion starts with feeding strays. Reading this blog again to refresh myself to do more. Strays animals generally lead a life of poor welfare on the street. Feeding strays is a compassionate act.

Demons are disembodied spirits, supernatural being or spirit and unseen beings. We know they do exist and I believe they do. They have no physical form to them whatsoever. Demons do definitely exist. They are intelligent beings who are evil malicious spirits and are all dangerous entities. Valak is not to be summoned capriciously by anyone as they are dangerous beings when we invoke them having to face a heavy consequence. There are spiritual practices that we can ask for help a ritual of the wrathful Manjushri in the form of Trakze. Having a doing the practice daily without fail, consistently, as this Trakze practice has been proven to be efficacious to break the hold the Valak and other spirits. All thanks to our Guru bringing this practice to Kechara Forest Retreat, Bentong Malaysia.

May H E Tsem Rinpoche’s sincere advice to reach the far shore of liberation to everyone reading this blog. The most truly generous people are those who give silently without asking any in return. There is no exercise better than reaching and lifting people up. A kind gesture can reach a wound that only compassion can heal. Well creating and lighting for others we naturally light our own way. Helping others especially those unfortunate ones, make us feel more positive about our own circumstances.

Lama Tsongkhapa was an influential Tibetan Buddhist monk, philosopher and tantric yogi, whose activities led to the formation of the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism . Lama Tsongkhapa was hailed as the second Buddha by contemporary Buddhist masters of his time. Famous for reviving Buddhism in Tibet and revered for elevating the Dharma to all its present glory. Hence having a 12 ft Lama Tsongkhapa Statue at new Kechara Gompa (Prayer Hall) is indeed a blessing. Its truly beautiful. Merely by looking at it is a blessing .

The Unknown

The Known and unknown are both feared,
Known is being comfortable and stagnant,
The unknown may be growth and opportunities,
One shall never know if one fears the unknown more than the known.
Who says the unknown would be worse than the known?
But then again, the unknown is sometimes worse than the known. In the end nothing is known unless we endeavour,
So go pursue all the way with the unknown,
because all unknown with familiarity becomes the known.

What the meat industry figured out is that you don't need healthy animals to make a profit.
Sick animals are more profitable... farms calculate how close to death they can keep animals without killing them. That's the business model. How quickly they can be made to grow, how tightly they can be packed, how much or how little can they eat, how sick they can get without dying... We live in a world in which it's conventional to treat an animal like a block of wood. ~ Jonathan Safran Foer

Umze for the day was Siew Hong. She's just been with us for slightly more than a year now but she's proven her capability in leading the puja. Our Penang group members are so proud of her and her commitment in attending the weekly puja. Despite being eloquence and smart, she has beautiful chant as well. When she leads, make sure you are there to hear her chant for yourself! Kechara Penang Study Group by Jacinta.

Dharma sharing by Hue before we proceeded with DS puja & Rinpoche Swift Return puja. Hue is one of the long time Kechara Penang members and he comes to puja regularly. He shared that he truly believes that Dorje Shugden and Rinpoche always there guiding him. He shared how sometimes DS will give him hints to avert troubles ahead or to alert him when he 'misbehaved'. Hope many will come to know more about this powerful Dharma Protector, Dorje Shugden aka DS. Having Dorje Shugden is like having a powerful ally that will protect us day and night. Just trust Him and have faith. Kechara Penang Study Group, 25/11/2023 by Jacinta.
