Philip Morris Malaysia staff participated in KSK rounds
27 employees (pic below) from Philip Morris Malaysia taking part in today’s Kechara Soup Kitchen’s rounds. In total we have 58 volunteers.
More and more big corporations are interested in Kechara Soup Kitchen‘s cause – community action group that distributes food, basic medical aid and counselling to the homeless and urban poor of Kuala Lumpur. I am very glad that volunteers from various ethnic, religious, and cultural background come together and volunteer their free time during the weekends to provide food and warmth to the less fortunate.
It doesn’t matter what background you are from as it is important to take tangible steps to relieve any type of sufferings from others. When we do nothing for others and only for ourselves, this is not a natural state of being. This is not the natural way that our minds functions to develop true happiness. It is a cliche, but the more we do for others, the more we do for ourselves.
Observe people who only think of themselves and their whole focus is themselves. Their energy is unpleasant, you don’t feel comfortable around them. You do not enjoy long extended visits with them. You in fact think or suspect what they might want to use you for. When your around people who are giving, kind, caring and also do tangible things for others, we are automatically comfortable with them. We are inpsired by them and perhaps moved to tears. These people make us think and reflect deeper into our selfishness and laziness. If we do not like staying around self-absorbed people, and we feel unhappy with them, do you think they ultimately feel happy with themselves?

More and more volunteers are coming from the Corporate and business world to feed the homeless started by Kechara Soup Kitchen. One corporate company is Philip Morris Malaysia who organised a group of 27 people to come and distribute food to the homeless. KSK pack 700 packets of food twice a week on Saturday nights and Sunday evenings. I can see in the picture showing the happy staff of Philip Morris Malaysia who are all geared up to go on their rounds to distribute the food to the homeless. This group of people are not all buddhists. What is important is the virtues actions they do. Kindness and compassion does not only exist in Buddhists. But in all humans who feel compassion for another less fortunate being.
Salutation to the 27 employees from Philip Morris Malaysia, who, each with a kind & caring heart for the down and out, joint KSK in the rounds of food distribution to the homeless and urban poor for KL and PJ areas (Commonly known as the forgotten faces of KL)
Come Saturday and Sunday each week, KSK will make it’s rounds to relief the pangs of hunger from these forgotten people, by distributing wet and dry food to the needy in areas of Jalan Pudu Lama, Chow Kit, Petaling Street, Masjid Jamek, Jalan Klang Lama, Brickfields, right up to Section 14 of P.Jaya.
Since 2006, KSK was set up with the motive of not only to feed the needy, but also help to rebuild the lives of many if there arises the need and possibilities to do so. From the initial start of only 20 packets, KSK food distribution today has reached 813 packets in total of each (wet and dry food).
In appreciation and recognition of the tireless work done for the homeless and poor, Ruby Khong, the president of KSK was included in Forbes Asia’s Heroes Philantrophy 2010 list.
Congratulations and keep on with the GOOD WORK! You are their “Special Angel and Mother Teresa”, Ruby!!

When I read Philip Morris the thing that came to my mind was Malboro cigerettes and their tv commercials. I am glad that they are voluntary work. It is great to be involve in voluntary work. It makes one less selfish and also because there is no salary in or pay one tends to put more effort into as it is not measured in terms of money. I miss my voluntary work at the temple. It is really great to see different kinds of people at these places and I wonder what brings all these people together and what is their hidden agenda. Some are there to network to get more friends to grow their business some are there for blessing idiot like me do my work there cause i am bored at home and hate loneliness.
The energy and spirit were at their height during the food packing session with Philip Morris’ team, they are hardworking, happy and sincere people.
Sunday’s food distribution round ended with President Ruby Khong giving a comprehensive on-site sharing at Petaling Street distribution spot; with many Philip Morris’ staff promised to ‘come back for more’ !!
It is great to see Philip Morris using KSK as a group activity for their staff. Its great for colleagues to do good deeds together. I think this will instill a strong bond among work mates and it is also an opportunity to gain some merits.
I hope more organizations will see value as Philip Morris has and participate in KSK. I have personally seen people gain a lot value from participating in KSK.
I personally think it is also a good training for the staff especially big organizations. As there will always be disharmony issues and office political issues in the office, it is inevitable from happening due to opinion differences and disagreement, many leaders can actually organize and encourage their staff to participate activity like Kechara Soup Kitchen, not only it encourages harmony among the staff, team spirit as well as create awareness of others (not only the homeless, among working colleagues as well!)
I rejoice for anyone or company who cares. This will definitely benefit many staff and the company itself…
