Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

As the symbol for compassion and enlightenment, Bodhi trees can be found in almost every Buddhist monastery. This is hardly a surprise given the energy generated by the monastic community’s ultimate goal – to practice undiscriminating compassion, and achieve enlightenment.

Recently, Bodhi trees have been sprouting wherever His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche, spiritual guide of Kechara, has a presence. It began with sprouts of a bodhi tree outside Rinpoche’s former Ladrang (a high Lama’s residence and private office), followed by sprouts outside of Kechara House’s gompa. The latest Bodhi tree has sprouted as an offshoot from a frangipani tree outside Rinpoche’s current residence.

The Bodhi tree outside Rinpoche’s residence a few years ago

It is very rare to see a Bodhi tree growing in Malaysia, because they are not native to this country. The tree also does not grow very easily, often taking 100 to 3000 years to become fully mature.

Since Bodhi trees are not native to Malaysia, there is no reason why they should be growing so frequently in this country…and so close to Rinpoche! Signs like this are therefore very auspicious as Bodhi trees represent compassion; it is said that Bodhi trees manifest where holy beings reside or where holy activities are conducted.

The Bodhi trees sprouting wherever Rinpoche goes is reminiscent of a story about Lama Tsongkhapa and the sandalwood tree. According to the legend, Tsongkhapa’s father took the afterbirth (placenta and fetal membranes) of his son and buried it in the ground. Moments later, a sandalwood tree grew right where the afterbirth was buried. The tree is now famously known as the Tree of Great Merit and emitting a pleasing scent, it also bears the impressions of the Buddha’s face and various holy syllables.

The Bodhi tree association with Buddhism and Enlightenment goes all the way back to the time of Siddhartha Guatama, the historical Buddha who is said to have achieved Enlightenment under the Bodhi tree in Bodhgaya, India. The current tree there is now widely regarded to be the direct descendant of the original specimen which Buddha sat under.

The Bodhi tree in Bodhgaya

Because of its close association with Enlightenment, which is the goal of all Buddhist practitioners, the tree has great sacred and symbolic significance. In the centuries after the Buddha, the Bodhi tree became a symbol of the Buddha’s presence and an object of worship.

With the blessings of the Buddha, we hope many Bodhi trees will appear at Kechara World Peace Centre in the future, a place where hundreds if not thousands of people will gather in the search for eternal happiness.

I rejoice for the Bodhi trees growing every where Rinpoche stays. Just like Shakyamuni who reached enlightenment under the Bodhi tree, enlightened beings have auspicious signs appearing around them.

Just like a few month ago, a Bodhi tree was found in front of H.E. the 25th Tsem Rinpoche’s gallery next to the Kechara Gompa. (picture)

May many people benefit from H.E. Tsem Rinpoche’s teachings and may the Dharma spread from Kechara Forest Retreat into 100 directions.

    Thank you for sharing,
    Pastor Antoinette

Great to see Bodhi tree which symbolising compassion and enlightenment are growing every where near to Rinpoche.
Now, one of the Bodhi tree in KL Ladrang is planted in Kechara Forest Retreat. Rejoice! May Buddhism grow and bless the whole area!

    Dear Tsem Rinpoche,

    Thanks for sharing Rinpoche.

The Bodhi-Tree is the world tree, and its roots drink deep of the waters of infinity. Its branches and leaves blow in the winds of the Void, and it is lit by the clear light. It is a tree of refuge, a place of safety from the raging tigers and dragons of desire. Each leaf has the bright green of spring, and its bark has the darkness and fragrance of the forest.

May the bodhi tree bring happiness to Rinpoche always.

    Regards,
    Venix

There’re many phenomenon and things happen and you can’t explain. But it doesn’t means it’s something not true or making up by some parties.

It might sound unbelievable for me before but now it seems convincing. We you have witnesses a holy being’s compassion and deeds, this is something easily accepted and appreciated.

Thank you Rinpoche for being here to benefit many in this country, this region and from here spread to the world.

  5. Joy on Jun 19, 2012 at 4:21 pm

Yes it’s TRUE… wherever Rinpoche steps foot in… something miraculous always happens. This Boddhi tree did not just happened once… it happened in the old house Rinpoche was staying and the landlord did not planted anything trees there either. I take this auspicious signs to mean we got a REAL DEAL DHARMA TEACHER here… so where ever Rinpoche goes… Dharma will manifest and grow without a doubt!

  6. edward on May 7, 2012 at 3:47 pm

Wow! this is so amazing,it is so rare that a bodhi tree can grow in Malaysia and is in front of Rinpoche’s house.

  7. KYC on May 5, 2012 at 9:34 am

There is a bodhi tree growing on the balcony of the 15th floor appartment of the condo where I live with my Dharma sisters Adeline Tan and Tan Gim Lee. It started growing soon after we moved in in November 2011. It grew from a crack in the wall. Inside, next to this wall is H.E. Tsem Rinpoche’s throne. We believe it is because of Rinpoche’s “presence” that the bodhi tree grew. It is an auspicious sign and I take it as an inspiration and encouragement for us to do more Dharma work. The problem is, we can’t let it continue to grow from the crack in the wall. As it grows bigger the wall might crack even more. We are looking for someone to help us replant the tree.

  8. ECheah on Apr 10, 2012 at 11:49 am

Simply put, there’s a Buddha in our midst.

  9. Adeline on Apr 9, 2012 at 5:48 pm

Prince Siddharta Gautama attained Buddhahood under a Bodhi tree 2500 years ago, therefore i always like to associate Bodhi tree is a holy tree and it’s like a Bodhi mind of an enlightened being, to me our Guru H E Tsem Rinpoche is a Buddha that’s why Bodhi trees grow wherever He stays very auspicious!

  10. Irene Lim on Apr 6, 2012 at 9:26 pm

Bodhi tree always appears wherever Rinpoche is in the neighbourhood. It never fails to amaze me all the time.

  11. patsy on Apr 6, 2012 at 5:28 pm

Amazing! Signs like bodhi tree, mushroom and rainbow appeared where ever Rinpoche is around is so auspicious!

  12. Shin on Apr 5, 2012 at 8:23 pm

I remember I saw the Bodhi tree appeared/ grew outside of the Kechara House gompa (prayer hall), it was on the sidewalk!

You can say it’s coincidence if it happens once or twice, but not so many times at so many different places.

I truly believe that these are signs by the Three Jewels to encourage Kecharians and everyone to have faith in and practice Dharma, as Dharma is the only real “miracle” that can lead us to ultimate happiness.

    • DR on Apr 8, 2012 at 8:25 pm

In a house in BU which Rinpoche stayed for afew years, a Bodhi tree grew and grew so big. The house owner was so happy; he said that it is because a holy being lives there.

      • Cynthia Lee on Jun 13, 2012 at 11:48 pm

I totally remember this. The tree was already at least 20-30ft when I first saw this tree in Bandar Utama. I was told it has been trimmed off several times already cos it kept growing and growing. My friend’s uncle’s tree did not even pass 10ft after 7 years of trying to grow his Bodhi tree.

  13. Uncle Eddie on Apr 5, 2012 at 5:39 pm

Trees hold a special significance which have witnessed life on earth over large expanse of time. In some cultures, a tree symbolishes the Earth’s centre, where all times and places converge. For this reason, trees are said to be considered sacred and provide a focal point for meditation, guidance and prayers, if we are open to their energy; what’s more the symbolic Bodhi tree, which many buddhist practitioners have seen and known its significance, when Lord Buddha sat under it to receive his enlightenment in Bodhgaya, India. With all the good omens manifesting in the forms of mushroom shoots and sacred Bodhi trees wherever our Rinpoche is, we are very confident we shall be seeing many of them growing in our KWPC very, very soon!!!

  14. lewkwanleng on Apr 5, 2012 at 2:54 pm

Yes, can’t really explain 🙂 but always good to see Bodhi trees

    Thanks for sharing, Rinpoche.

I have a strong respect for all the religions, religious places and the mode of prayers they follow. I believe it is more important to have a strong faith, and this faith will lead us on the correct path.

Thank you for the precious sharing and bring us to the beautiful snow-covered peaks view of Gaden Monastery. I am bless to see the photo of Golden Stupa that encases the holy remains of Lama Tsongkapa’s blessed body/clothes/relics. I sure you must had enjoyed the wonderful experiences of the journey.

NASA’s planet-hunting Kepler spacecraft has discovered several terrestrial-mass planets orbiting. Interesting they have discovered the first Earth-size planet orbiting a star in the habitable zone . Wow… an Earth-sized world within the habitable range of its star, which could allow the presence of liquid water to exist. It has proven we are not alone in this universe where others being such as Aliens or UFO. I do believe definitely there are other unknown beings exist and other planets as well. Maybe in future , more discoveries.
    Interesting read .

Money is not everything in life and is not evil . But one uses it in a wrong way it creates harm and unhappiness. Money is the worst discovery in human life but it is the most trusted material to test human nature. With the money , we have use it wisely as one without money in life is tough and rough. If have more money than we need it is good to give away helping in charity and to those who needed badly. To teach our children the right way, never spoiled them with attachment. There is no easy way or short cut .
Thank you Rinpoche for this profound teachings.

The art of dinning come from the menu, style and the concept of the restaurant. I haven’t been there but the menu looks yummy. I love almost all vegetarian food that’s made from fresh and healthy ingredients. Vegetarian food leaves a deep impression of our nature. Heart breaking after watching the video. Its really sad watching those animals including bludgeoning, neck-breaking while many are skinned alive. The way they were killed just for their fur is horrible inhumane practices. In fact those animals are confined to relatively small wire cages with little enrichment. Millions of fur-bearing animals are killed every year by trappers worldwide. For many of us, wearing fur is simply cruel, and to be avoided at all costs. China is the largest importer of fur pelts in the world and the largest exporter of finished fur products. Glad that campaign groups such as PETA have long highlighted the cruelty of such farms. Fur farming is now banned in a number of countries such as Austria, Croatia, the United Kingdom and so forth. Not only causing the suffering and deaths of millions of animals each year, the production of wool, fur, and leather contributes to climate change, land devastation, pollution, and even water contamination. Hopefully the fur industry can work together with farms with better regulations.
Thank you Rinpoche for this sharing to bring awareness of the cruelty of animal at fur farm.

Beautiful Jog Fall located at southern state of Karnataka is India’s highest waterfall. It is a segmented waterfall which depends on rain and season becomes a plunge waterfall. Its one of the power where our Lama H E the 25th Tsem Rinpoche had visited years ago. From the beautiful pictures of Jog Fall can tells us more. Looks peaceful to do prayers, recitation , meditation, retreat as encouraged by our Lama when visiting holy place. When there is stupa we can also do circumambulations, offerings and more. Doing prayers at all these power holy places would be wonderful. There are many places as mentioned by Rinpoche do have powerful positive energy. It’s those place where great masters have visited , varies prayers done, meditation ,and retreats. All these holy places such as Lumbini, Bodhgaya, Sarnath-Varanasi and Kushinagara, Tsongkapa’s birthplace and many more all over the world is infused with the powerful energy of beings. A good article to read and great knowledge of some of the power place and go on pilgrimage.
We are fortunate to have Rinpoche here in Malaysia where Kechara Forest Retreat was conceptualized ….a holy place infused with powerful energy. It has indeed benefited many and many more to come.

A very unusual friendship which I have not heard of. ‘ Incredible true story of Pocho. a injured crocodile was found on the bank of the Parasmina River in Costa Rica after being shot by a farmer.
Even an animal as large and carnivorous can be gentle and loving. All animals deserve the chance to live.Thank you very much for the good article.

Most people think animal cruelty is mainly people being unkind to animals. Based on the article million innocent animals were tortured and killed for their fur or skin off their backs. The fur industry is such a cruel heartless business that is bad for the environment and unnecessary.

It’s horrendous, I can’t believe that fur from China has so much demand. Shock to see the industries cheapest and cruelest methods used in killing the animals. All the animals are victims of cruelty spent their whole lives restricted to filthy, cramped wire cages. This has to come to an end.

The industry will continue to grow wild if there is no restriction. The success of any business depends upon how they are creating the demand for a product in the target market and then, how they are managing the supplies to fulfill that demand.

Attitudes toward minorities have been marked by discrimination historically almost everywhere. In the United States’s history many forms of discrimination had been happening in U.S. Population growth and cultural has change throughout much of the U.S. Americans enjoyed legally sanctioned privileges and rights which were denied to other races and minorities. All these should happened just because of their religion, spirituality, race, economic background. Anyway it did happened in USA, as Rinpoche did experienced before where discrimination and there are people who are segregated because of their religious faith.
In happened in the Dorje Shugden’s controversy as well all because of their faith which has affected hundred thousands of Tibetan communities . Even to this day the discrimination still continue with the Tibetan Leadership interference politics with religion.
History has a tendency to repeat itself and those who do not learn history are doomed to repeat it. Hopefully it will not be repeated for peace and harmony .
    Thank you Rinpoche for sharing.

Beautiful rare and precious ancient thangkas . We are fortunate to have such an opportunity to see all the rare thangkas of Dorje Shugden , Sakya Pandita Kunga Gyaltsen, Five Foremost Deities – Mo Lha and so forth. They are all centuries old thangkas . Incredible all are private collections as well as from Rubin Museum of Art which been printed centuries ago. Merely by looking at it is a blessing and paints a thousand words. All these rare centuries thangkas has proven that the Tibetan Leadership is wrong in their judgements of the Dorje Shugden origin. It is visual proof that Dorje Shugden was practised by the other Tibetan Buddhist traditions as well and is not evil spirits.

Buddhism has a long history in Indonesia, and is recognized as one of six official religions. Numerous stupa, statues , inscriptions from the earlier history of Indonesian has suggested c Buddhism came to Indonesia a few hundred years after Hinduism. Buddhism is the second oldest religion in Indonesia, after Hinduism recording to history. Temples been built since then which still exist and came under the world heritage site. Borobudur,is one of them which is a 9th-century Mahayana Buddhist temple, in Central Java, Indonesia. The magnificent Borobudur temple is the world’s biggest Buddhist monument, an ancient site widely considered to be one of the world’s seven wonders and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Amazing just in the Borobudur itself there were over 500 Buddha statues . I have been to there yet , wish I could. Heard from friends the beauty of it, a peaceful place good for meditation and do prayers . Buddhism in Indonesia has an interesting history behind it. The Srivijaya Kingdom and its kings were influential factors in the spreading of Buddhism then. Interesting read.
Thank you Rinpoche and Valencia sharing this interesting article.

The Unknown

The Known and unknown are both feared,
Known is being comfortable and stagnant,
The unknown may be growth and opportunities,
One shall never know if one fears the unknown more than the known.
Who says the unknown would be worse than the known?
But then again, the unknown is sometimes worse than the known. In the end nothing is known unless we endeavour,
So go pursue all the way with the unknown,
because all unknown with familiarity becomes the known.

    3 yearss ago
What the meat industry figured out is that you don't need healthy animals to make a profit.
Sick animals are more profitable... farms calculate how close to death they can keep animals without killing them. That's the business model. How quickly they can be made to grow, how tightly they can be packed, how much or how little can they eat, how sick they can get without dying... We live in a world in which it's conventional to treat an animal like a block of wood. ~ Jonathan Safran Foer

Thanks to the effort of our outstation team, we were able to mobilise food provisions to 600 families living in Kelantan, Penang, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka and Johor during the Raya period with each of these families receiving RM200 worth of provisions. Adding onto the current 368 families in Klang Valley, a total of 968 families were benefitted from this. Special thanks to the sponsors who have contributed especially Hong Leong Foundation and partially from Tesco Malaysia (where we also ordered the provisions from). ~ Vivian @ Kechara Soup Kitchen
