Dear pastors,

I sticked some mantras on to my ceiling fan previously so it can act some sort like turning prayer wheel. But then I found out prayer wheel should not be turned anticlockwise, and my fan is turning anticlockwise. Is there any negative karma through this? My mind did became a bit neurotic for that period. Bad thoughts, aggression thoughts pop up suddenly, and I was very busy doing confession and reciting 35 confession buddhas names all the times.

Another question, should we confess immediately for every neurotic aggressive bad thoughts that pop up suddenly in our minds, or should we just let it pass. It does take up a lot of time to confess and recite, and affected our work quality at office hours.

    Dear Teng,

    You should remove the mantras from the ceiling fan. Do not worry about the negative karma as there was no bad intention. When bad thoughts arise, note them and let them pass. Practise mindfulness and avoid non-virtuous actions of body, speech and mind. Meditate regularly to overcome your afflictive emotions. To purify negative karma, you can do the practice of the 35 Confessional Buddhas or the Vajrasattva purification practice with the 4 opponent powers once a day. Do not take purification practices lightly. We take the trouble to do these practices because we believe in karma.

Can sea creature like fish,frog lobster when they die take rebirth in human realm..?
How can one feel the rebirth in other realms..when there is absence of 4 elements..besides human and animal realm..

when somebody dies..where does mind instantly go to..in the air etc..? also when egg fertilize..consciousness enters..where does that mind comes from….?

    Dear Kunga,

    Depending on their karma, animals do take rebirth in the human realm when their karma in that rebirth has been exhausted and they have not committed any serious evil acts. Beings born in realms other than the human and animal realms belong to a different dimension, some with form and others formless and one may or may not have the awareness that one has been reborn.

In this life i feel like i have two main teachers one is H.E Tsem rinpoche and the other is Kushok Lobsang Dhamchöe. But their views on DS issues are completely different . WHICH VEIW SHOULD I UPHOLD. Should i go with my own personal view that if a person who wears the three robes of a monk is worthy of offerings and praise .

    And I quote from Rinpoche – “2. my second solution that comes from my ordinary mind is when you have two teachers who teach you ‘opposing’ views and practices, take on the advice of the first teacher and follow that through without thinking negative things about the second teacher, if this applies to you. Some explanation is required. For example, if your first teacher told you to practice Tsongkhapa and he has passed away, and the second teacher recommends you to do Guru Rinpoche as your main practice, since your first teacher has passed away and you cannot be excused from the practice, then naturally you have to tell the second teacher that you did not get permission to be excused and so you must remain status quo. The second teacher should never override the blessed instructions of the first teacher for this disciple, as it will create confusion. In my case, I have had hundreds of people come see me over the years and they will tell me that their teacher or a teacher told them to practice Nechung, Vajrakilaya, Tara, Ekajati, Manjushri, Guru Rinpoche, Tsongkhapa, etc. Can I tell them if this was the best practice for them or not? Except under extreme circumstances, I always tell them that whatever practices they are doing is more than fine, and I have nothing to change or add because ultimately that is the truth. I do not want to confuse them, nor disrespect their faith in their teacher, and I do not wish to disrespect their teachers either. So, if a person can stop their practice given to them by their teacher, they must receive the permission of the teacher who gave them the practice because no follow-up teacher has the authority to override the first teacher, if you really want to follow the rules strictly.”

I usually give the benefit of doubts to others..in addition I m receptive,gentle,peaceful,easy going person..but in a materialistic dog eat dog world..people miscalculate,misjudge thinking they got a easy prey or victim..and try to play games..to make the things happen in their favour through cajouling,mind game etc..and I feel bad and angry also to see such act and demeanor from other..should I remain at loss and victim..thinking that karma will punish them..Thank you.!

    How we look at things is important for our inner peace and happiness. To have a calm and stable mind, we must change the way we look at things. Basically, it is about changing our attitude, perspective and approach to people and the world around us. Everyday, we meet people with different states of mind, some positive, and some negative. Due to their delusions, some may have bad intentions towards you. We have no control over their minds but we can have control over ours. As H.E. Tsem Rinpoche said, “if you’re a Dharma practitioner, you must have proper motivation from Day One.” Are you practising solely for yourself or for the sake of others? If it is for the sake of others, then you will be able to bear the difficulties and not give up on them, whatever they do to you. Think about your family and loved ones. Would you give up on them if they have done something wrong and have hurt you? Getting angry and having ill-will towards others will not solve anything. There is a Dharma teaching by H.E.     You can do Vajrasattva’s purification practice daily. Vajrasattva is the manifestation of the purity of the body, speech and mind of all the Buddhas. I am interested in Buddhism. Please give me some clues as to how should I start to practice Buddhism if I do not go to a centre.

    Dear Siew Tai,

    Reading books on Buddhism is useful for gaining knowledge but if possible, try to learn the Dharma from a teacher who belongs to a lineage that goes all the way back to Buddha Shakyamuni. Through the teachings, we will receive the blessings of the Buddha and lineage masters. So it is better to go to a centre. According to the Sutras, there are advantages of hearing the Dharma directly from a teacher. The Buddha explained that when one listens to the Dharma with thorough attention, the five hindrances do not exist and the seven factors of enlightenment are complete. Furthermore, we find that in the Sutras and the Vinaya, almost all the persons who attained stream entry (first path leading to liberation/enlightenment) did so by listening to the Dharma. It is really worth one’s while to attend Dharma teachings as the teacher will be able to answer your questions and clear your doubts. On your own, it is difficult because you may not know whether you are going in the right direction and there is no one to advise you. Therefore, the advantages of going to a centre is definitely more than reading up on your own. I hope this helps.

Dear Pastors,

If we turn the mani prayer wheel in opposite direction, will there be serious negative karma? I printed some chenrezig mantra image and sticked to my cds, so that they will turn when being played. But then, I found out the CD turn clockwise, and if clockwise the mantra will be spinning in opposite direction. Will this generate negative karma? If we want to disposed of printed sutras, buddha images, and mantras, how should we do it? Thanks.

    Dear Tan,

    There are reasons for turning the prayer wheel in a clockwise direction. When it turns clockwise, the mantra can be seen turning in the direction in which it is written. It is also the direction we follow when we circumambulate a Buddha statue, stupa or holy place. Another reason given is that it follows the movement of the sun across the sky.

    Normally, we do not turn the mani wheel in an anticlockwise direction. In certain tantric practices, the prayer wheel is turned anticlockwise in order to manifest more wrathful protective energy. But since we are not tantric practitioners, it is not advisable to do so.

    Don’t worry about which way your CD is turning and the direction the mantra is spinning as long as the sound comes out right.

    As for the disposal of printed sutras, buddha images and mantras, the best way is to burn them. Do not throw them in the garbage bin and do not burn them along with other trash. Burn them alone and as they burn, recite OM AH HUM. As the smoke rises, visualise that the essence of the Dharma is being carried to the six realms of samsara, blessing all sentient beings, purifying their minds and removing their suffering.

What does mahayana mention about the pali suttas,do mahayana monasteries study them ? Shakyamuni is said to have originally transmitted teachings in Pali/magadhi languages,then at what point of time did buddhists shift to sanskrit ? Hinayanists seem to be rejecting all Mahayana texts as being unauthentic,why did this rivalry arise ?

    Dear Aditya,

    There is no rivalry between the two main vehicles of Buddhism. It is said in the Lamrim (Stages of the Path to Enlightenment) that all the scriptures of the Buddha are without contradiction. This means that all the teachings of the Bhagavan Buddha are harmonious. The Mahayana and the Theravada seem to contradict each other but they are all nothing but the main practice to take us to enlightenment or a branch of its attainment. The foundation studies are similar in both traditions. The Mahayana monasteries also include the study of the Tripitaka (vinaya, sutras and the abhidharma). People practise according to their level of spiritual development. The Lamrim, which contains the 84000 teachings of the Buddha, explains the three scopes of spiritual application: (1) small scope: application based on the wish to gain higher rebirth, (2) medium scope: personal liberation from samsara, and (3) great scope: liberation possessed of omniscience as a means to benefit all sentient beings. When a person is at the level of the small and medium scopes, the Theravada teachings are suitable. When this person has made some progress and is at the level of the great scope, he/she can receive the Mahayana teachings. And when he/she becomes a suitable vessel for the tantras, then the Vajrayana can be taught to him/her. Thus, a person can follow the teachings and progress from the small scope to the great scope. All these practices are harmonious for a person to follow in order to be enlightened.

    The original Pali scriptures were rendered into Sanskrit by the Mahasanghikas who broke away during the Second Council. King Kanishka, a follower of the Mahayana in the 1st century AD convened the Mahayana Council and a Sanskritized version of the Dharma was finalised and many commentaries were written after that.

    In general, Theravada Buddhists do not subscribe to the Mahayana belief that one must strive to attain Buddhahood for the sake of all sentient beings. For them this belief has no ground because the Buddha never mentioned that he wanted to save all living beings. In addition, many of the Buddhas practised in the Mahayana school are not historical Buddhas and are therefore not given much attention by Theravada practitioners.

    As practitioners, we must respect all traditions and remember that everyone practises at his/her own level. Whatever tradition we belong to, whether Theravada or Mahayana, as long as we do our practice well, we will achieve the goal.

I want to ask about the shurangama dharani. Does it real power is to subdue demons and the like?. In its translation i read it will create a barrier as far as 12 yojanas. But for the least it will only create a protective as far as one self. What i really want to know is the exprn from those who acctually chant it. Once i asked a person he only told me thats a "hard mantra" literally to tell demons to "but off". Does this dharani really works, i have been chanting it for sometimes…but havent seen any "signs". I havent ask for any abhiseka to chant it though. Is it because of that i havent seen any…

    I do not know much about the Shurangama sutra and mantra. The recitation of the Shurangama mantra is a popular Chinese Mahayana practice to ward off demons and evil spirits. As you are practising it, you are in a better position to judge whether it is working or not. For any spiritual practice to have results, one must listen to the Dharma from a master, gain faith and knowledge, meditate and practice it well. If you are doubtful about the effectiveness of the mantra, it is quite certain you will not get any results. I suggest you find a qualified teacher to guide you and to give you the abhisheka.

In what way can a lay person purify her/his negative karma to have a better rebirth next life – can just chanting mantras and doing good deeds do ?

Or must it be something more elaborate for a lay person to handle ?

What are the things that will let us gain merits ? Is it the same ?

    Dear Lay Poh,

    The way one can purify negative karma to have a good rebirth is not through just chanting mantras and doing good deeds although these are virtuous actions and will certainly help us to collect merits.

    We can purify our negative karma with the four opponent powers: The power of repudiation, the power of refraining from the misdeed, the power of reliance and the power of applying the antidotes. Everyone can do this. It is certainly not something that lay people cannot do. The power of repudiation means having strong regret for one’s sins of the past. This is the most important of the four powers. If one has this the others will follow. This power comes from having faith in karma. The power of refraining from the misdeed involves firmly resolving to refrain from it and thinking, “From now on I will not do it even at the cost of my life.” The power of reliance is to take refuge in the Three Jewels and to generate bodhicitta. With this, we can either do the Vajrasattva purification practice and recitations of his mantra or recitations of the 35 Confessional Buddhas. The power of applying the antidotes means any virtuous practice done to purify the sin.

    There are many ways to accumulate merits, for example, through developing bodhicitta, through prostrations, through meditating on loving kindness, through making offerings, through petitioning the merit field, through rejoicing for the virtues of oneself and others, through offering the seven-limbed prayer and the world mandala, through meditating on “taking” (the suffering of others), and through taking refuge.

    Do read up on karma, accumulation of merits and purification of negative karma in order to gain more knowledge for your practice. There is a teaching on karma by H.E. Is it true that anyone can chant mantras and be helped even if that person is of a different religion?

    Thank you for your question. Yes, according to our practice anyone can chant mantras and it will help them even if they are of a different religion. The compassionate energies of the Buddhas do not discriminate depending on which religion you are. That being said mantras will be more effective if the person reciting them has good motivation, love and compassion for others, and wants to lessen the negative qualities that they may have such as anger and hatred.

    However it is important to respect other people beliefs and not force anyone to practice something they are not comfortable with. There are countries in the world where practicing another religion may be against the law. It is best to be respectful of other people’s beliefs.

I am just a layperson but I have read a lot about Buddhism and have attended a few prayer sessions whenever a high lama comes to my State at a Buddhist centre.

Recently I came across Kechara's website whilst searching for information on Buddhism and learnt about Lord Setrap. As such since I am experiencing personal obstacles in my life at the present moment I have been chanting Lord Setrap's mantra OM MAHA YAK CHAKSA SOHA daily. Will I be able to get a connection to Lord Setrap through my daily chanting so that my obstacles will be pacified ? Must I chant a certain number of mantras daily to seek Lord Setrap's help ?

While in this samsara..people make livelihood by both good and bad ways..Some people do all the non virtues things in their living or profession..yet they succeed with lots of material benefits,big families all grown up etc..They do business..but lie every day to make lots of money etc…I know..this gain is all for this life..may be setting a negative karma for next life..So the accomplishment or achievement they got in this life are becoz of their good karma…?Thank you.

    During countless lifetimes, we have created both good and bad karma. Karma once created will not disappear of its own accord. When the conditions and time are right, karma will ripen into results. Thus, the people who are seen to have a good life, who are wealthy and successful in spite of their non-virtuous actions, are enjoying the good seeds sown in a past life. But this good karma is being exhausted in this life and the black karma that is being created in this life will ripen in the next life or in future lives unless this karma is purified.

    All beings desire happiness and wish to avoid suffering. The cause for our having happiness is to create merits by avoiding the ten non-virtues and purifying our negative karma.     Pujas are very effective methods for calling upon the enlightened energies of the Buddhas for a specific purpose. As you have ordered a puja from Kechara, you must have had a specific outcome in mind. However the length of time for the desired outcome to manifest is not set in stone and depends on the karma of those in the particular situation, therefore I cannot give you a definitive time frame. The blessings of the Buddhas may not always fit your perception of how the situation should be resolved. Trust in the power of the Buddhas and the puja, and you will definitely see an improvement in the situation. The key is to be open to the compassion of the Buddhas, who will definitely come to your aid as long as your motivation is pure. Please do not hesitate to ask more questions here.

Do animals both tamed and wild,even insects have subtle and very subtle mind..? Do these animals conscious/soul/mind wander in the bardo for 49 days…?

2)How should I do a serious prayer…? Is there any protocol physically,mentally,emotionally to visualize any deities…viz..Tara,Guru Rinpoche,Tsongapa etc..I do it sincerely..but I don't know how to visualize properly…

    Dear Tashi,

    1) Yes, all animals have a subtle and very subtle mind. In fact all sentient beings have these minds. And yes, the minds of these animals do also wander in the 49 day bardo period after their death. Actually when in the bardo period it is not that one has to wander in the bardo for 49 days, it is just that depending on your karma it may take up to 49 days for you to enter your next rebirth, during which time you are in the bardo.

    2)There are specific sequences of practices and visualizations to follow when in engaging in deity practice, however this is more important for those who have received higher teachings and initiations. The key to prayer is sincerity, it is not necessary to have the visualizations 100% correct at the beginning stages of your practice. With practice and over time, as you familiarize yourself with the practices, the visualizations will become easier and stronger.

    For a practice to begin with I suggest you start with the Guru Yoga of Lama Tsongkhapa. This simple practice is the core practice of our lineage and has innumerable benefits. His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche has given a very good commentary, which can be found here:

As human life is in samsara..Is it good karma to be born as human being in samsaric suffering..?what is the higgest form of rebirth..? where can I see it..?

    Dear Dorjee,

    Yes, it is good karma to be born as a human being in samsara provided we are born with the freedoms and endowments of the optimum human rebirth. This means that we are free of the four unfavourable non-human states, that is, hell beings, animals, hungry ghosts and long-lived gods. These states are not suitable for Dharma practice. There are also four unfavourable human states: being born in a remote, barbaric region where there is no Dharma, being born in a place where the Buddha has not come, being born with mental or physical disabilities and holding wrong views denying Dharma. There are ten endowments; five are personal and five relate to others. The five personal endowments are: being born human, being born in a country where the Dharma is flourishing, having all one’s faculties, not having committed any of the five heinous crimes and having faith in the Buddha’s teachings. The five endowments in relation to others are: being born human in a world where the Buddha has come, being born human in a world where the Buddha has taught the Dharma, being born in a world where the pure Dharma is still being taught, being born human in a world where there are people practising the pure Dharma and being born in a world where there are sponsors and benefactors for Dharma practitioners.

    Therefore, the highest form of rebirth is the optimum human rebirth because it is with this optimum human rebirth that we can practise the Dharma and achieve enlightenment. I don't know…why human life is full of suffering.Is there any form of life seen by our eyes that is devoid of suffering…? Also I wonder where does mind roam..once death occurs.? lately..I m thinking and worrying too much about next life..please help..

    Dear Wangmo,

    Pabongka Rinpoche said in “Liberation in the Palm of Your Hand” that “as long as you have taken rebirth in samsara, you have not transcended suffering at all.” There is no being in samsara, whether seen or unseen, that is devoid of suffering. Human beings have to endure the sufferings of birth, ageing, sickness, death, having to part with what they like, meet with what they don’t like and not getting what they want. These sufferings are caused by our karma and our delusions: ignorance (of the nature of existence), desire and hatred. Therefore, to end suffering, we have to purify our negative karma as well as overcome these delusions by practising the Dharma and developing the three qualities: wisdom (realising the way things are), renunciation (of our desire/attachments) and compassion. These three qualities are the antidotes to our delusions.

    When death occurs, our consciousness does not end. It will definitely take rebirth, either in the upper realms (god, demi-god or human) or in the lower realms (animal, hungry ghost or hell). It is good to worry about the next life because this fear of the possibility of going to the lower realms will make us want to take refuge in the Three Jewels and practise the Dharma diligently in order not to fall into the lower realms.

Once I did a card and dice divination from indian fortune teller..he told me I m vey kind,generous and good heart..due to these nature..people like to take advantage..i asked him..why so..he told people are greedy and selfish..so they see somebody as easy prey..how is his explanation related to karma..Thank you…!

    Being kind, generous, and having a good heart are qualities which one should develop because we are benefiting others. Some people may take advantage of you but only if you have the karma to have this happen to you. As Dharma practitioners, we must practise kindness and generosity without expecting anything in return, or any karmic ripening effects. If our generosity is motivated by bodhicitta, the act of giving is a true practice of generosity. Never regret after giving away material things. Make strong prayers and set good motivation both before and afterward, thinking that the giving is being done for all sentient beings.

Meet the Pastors

Serving the community. Tirelessly

Combining the responsibilities of the ordained and the appearance of a layperson, pastors are the connection between the sangha and the everyday practitioner. They are ordinary people who have taken an extraordinary step in dedicating their lives towards sharing the Buddhist tradition. As laypeople holding vows, pastors will make the Dharma accessible to more people, giving them guidance and sharing knowledge. Pastor Chia (sangha to be)

As a pastor, Chia will dedicate his life to befitting others through spreading the works of Tsem Rinpoche and Dharma to many people, through the use of pujas, rituals, counseling and sharing of his knowledge.

Ordained as a Pastor in 2011, Chia Song Peng has had a rich and varied Dharma career. He has held a core position with the Kechara Paradise retail outlets, served as a personal attendant to Tsem Rinpoche, embarked on various pilgrimages and received initiations into higher yoga tantric practices. He is accomplished in many pujas and has a deep understanding of the Dharma.

As a pastor, Chia has dedicated his life to befitting others through spreading the works of Tsem Rinpoche and Dharma to many people, through the use of pujas, rituals, counseling and sharing of his knowledge.

When Chia first met Tsem Rinpoche, he was asked if he wanted to become a monk, however even though this was his aspiration he informed Tsem Rinpoche that he would do so at a later date. For Chia, as he has is already in the Dharma full-time, it would be best if he became ordained. Tsem Rinpoche has reminded Chia from time to time to work towards becoming a monk and he promised that he would do so in the future.

Kechara began from nothing to become a growing Dharma organisation with major projects such as Kechara Forest Retreat, so Chia thinks that this is the perfect time to become ordained as a monk. Recently Tsem Rinpoche asked Chia again if he would like to be ordained, this time Chia said yes.

Pastor Khong Jean Ai (sangha to be)

Jean Ai wishes to become a vessel that holds the teachings of Lama Tsongkhapa to benefit future generations, inspiring others to live by the Buddha’s teachings.

Jean Ai met His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche as a young child and through her parents' involvement with Kechara over the years, she has never known a life without His Eminence. Jean Ai was a regular volunteer of Tsem Ladrang during her childhood and teenage years. After graduating with a BSc (Hons) in Psychology from the University of Warwick in the UK and working at the London Probation Service, she returned to Kuala Lumpur to join Tsem Ladrang's e-division. There she managed kechara.com, responsible for the weekly Kechara e-newsletter, including content generation and editing. Since then she has joined His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche’s writing team, responsible for executing Rinpoche’s personal instructions and managing his correspondence.

Having visited a nunnery in India in 2004, Jean Ai remembers noticing how happy and purposeful everyone was. She had a feeling of familiarity and the sight of the robes comforted her. Immediately, Jean Ai messaged her mother who told her to ask Rinpoche’s advice. Rinpoche told her to complete her secular education so that when she taught the Dharma her words would carry the credibility and weight of a university degree, something she completed with the motivation that some day she wanted to become a nun.

Through her ordination as a nun, Jean Ai wishes to become a vessel that holds the teachings of Lama Tsongkhapa to benefit future generations, inspiring others to live by the Buddha’s teachings. Through this she hopes to repay the kindness of her parents and her Guru. Above all she wants to abide in a state free of suffering, and she wants this for others as well.

Pastor Shin Tan (sangha to be)

For Shin, this is a great step forward to being fully committed to the cause of others and repaying others’ kindness through sharing the Dharma with others.

Before joining Kechara, Shin worked as a lecturer and provider of content and e-learning content solutions for various start-ups. Whilst providing training to educators teaching students in English for Specific Purposes (ESP) at various colleges, she was invited to attend a Dharma talk given by His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche at Kechara House. This event rekindled her interest in Tibetan Buddhism, as she recalled the joy of accompanying her parents to teachings as a teenager.

Joining Kechara Media & Publications in 2006 as a volunteer, Shin assumed a full time position there as a Marketing Executive, with the aim of making His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche’s teachings available to more people around the world. Shin is now a member of the Tsem Ladrang Team, who takes care of His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche’s secular matters, enabling Rinpoche to focus on teaching the holy Dharma.

Shin states that when she decided to join Kechara full time, she had already decided to be of some benefit to others and spend the rest of her life doing only that. Working closely with His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche, seeing his tireless effort in helping others and spreading the Buddhadharma through the Gaden tradition despite tremendous challenges has made her realise that the next logical step is to become ordained as she has the opportune conditions to study with her Guru. For Shin this is also a great step forward to being fully committed to the cause of others and repaying others’ kindness through sharing the Dharma with others.

Pastor Adeline Woon (sangha to be)

Since finding her spiritual home here in Kechara, Adeline has made dharma work her life’s mission and wishes to dedicate herself fully towards the benefit of others.

Adeline stumbled across His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche's blog towards the end of 2010 and has been following his blog and Facebook page ever since. Since graduating from Dharma Drum Buddhist College Taiwan with a Masters of Arts in Religious Studies in July 2012, she returned to Malaysia and joined Kechara as a Senior Education Executive. Adeline was attracted by His Eminence’s straightforwardness and impressed at Kechara's growth under his guidance. To Adeline, His Eminence is someone who walks the talk, keeps his promises and sincerely cares for others displaying an excellent example of guru devotion, qualities that she seeks to develop herself.

Since finding her spiritual home here in Kechara, Adeline has made dharma work her life’s mission. It was in May 2013 that she officially requested His Eminence for ordination as a nun to dedicate her life fully for the dharma. According to Adeline, become ordained means that she is being true to her calling to live according to the dharma and be of benefit to others.

This however can only be achieved by meeting and studying under her root Guru. Adeline has been fortunate enough to have met with hers - His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche.

Pastor Niral Patel (sangha to be)

It is Niral’s motivation for full ordination to better himself, learn the teachings of our lineage in order to preserve them for future generations. He wishes to benefit others, just as he has benefited and is still benefiting from Tsem Rinpoche’s explanation of the Dharma.

Niral was born and raised in the UK, having graduated with a BA in Anthropology, he was working as a Financial Administrator for a Serviced Apartment & Hotel company as well as a Management Services company before stumbling across His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche’s Youtube channel, entirelyby accident. It was through His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche’s teachings that he began to understand the importance of practicing the Dharma, in order to benefit himself and others around him.

Having been in contact with one of Tsem Rinpoche’s long time students in the UK, he was encouraged to visit Kechara in late 2012 for a 10 day visit. At the end of the visit Tsem Rinpoche requested Niral to come to work at Kechara, to which he agreed.

Niral moved to Malaysia in February 2013 to work as an education coordinator at Kechara House, assisting the Education Division in the creation and implementation of the new education syllabus, teaching teenagers during the Kechara Sunday Dharma School. Ever since meeting Tsem Rinpoche, he has always been encouraged by Tsem Rinpoche to do more Dharma work and strive to better himself. It is with that in mind, that Niral has requested monastic ordination.

It is Niral’s motivation for full ordination to better himself, learn the teachings of our lineage in order to preserve them for future generations. He wishes to benefit others, just as he has benefited and is still benefiting from Tsem Rinpoche’s explanation of the Dharma.

Pastor Tan Gim Lee (sangha to be)

Gim Lee’s main focus is to guide and help anyone who steps through Kechara’s doors through Dharma sharing, counselling, performing pujas and other Buddhist services. She wishes to repay Rinpoche’s kindness by spreading Lama Tsongkhapa’s holy teachings and inspiring others on the spiritual path.

She discovered Kechara by chance in 2006 and started to participate Kechara's activities almost immediately especially the retreat to collect 10 million Migtsema recitations. In April 2006, when Gim Lee met H.E. Tsem Rinpoche and first listened to his teachings, she wept uncontrollably. Though she could not understand it at the time, she had finally found her perfect teacher. She is especially touched by Tsem Rinpoche's compassionate method of teaching by setting his own examples.

Having joined as a staff of Kechara House responsible for housekeeping in 2009, Gim Lee is now one of Kechara House's Front Desk Managers predominantly based in the retreat centre in Bentong, Pahang. She also teaches the Sunday Dharma Class and moderates Dharma discussions on Tsem Rinpoche's blog chat.

The many teachings she has received from Tsem Rinpoche have changed her priorities in life. She found answers to her questions about the purpose of life, and she has realised that the way to overcome the sufferings of pain and anger is by following the path of compassion and wisdom as taught by Lord Buddha. These realisations have led to her request to be ordained as a Sangha member.

As pastor now, and later as a Buddhist nun, Gim Lee's main focus is to guide and help anyone who steps through Kechara's doors through Dharma sharing, counselling, performing pujas and other Buddhist services. She wishes to repay Rinpoche's kindness by spreading Lama Tsongkhapa's holy teachings and inspiring others on the spiritual path.

Pastor Loh Seng Piow (sangha to be)

Loh Seng Piow developed a strong wish to help Rinpoche in spreading the Dharma to the world. With that determination, Loh Seng Piow chose not to pursue his PhD degree in Cambridge University (for which he had been offered a place), resigned from his research job, and joined Tsem Rinpoche as full-time Dharma worker, and has never looked back since.

Back in 2001, Loh Seng Piow had no inkling of just how involved in Dharma he would become. As a Masters degree-holder in Engineering, Loh Seng Piow was working as a research engineer in Singapore when he met His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche. Rinpoche’s talk left a strong impression on him and after a few encounters with Rinpoche, Loh Seng Piow started developing websites for Rinpoche and Kechara.

Loh Seng Piow was trained in science, but soon realised that there were many questions that science could not answer. At the same time, he also felt that science and technology are not the solution to human problems, as humans are much better off compared to thousands years ago, yet the problems in this world are still the same, if not more, and we do not seem to be happier than our ancestors.

Loh Seng Piow soon realised that the Dharma is the ultimate solution to human problems, and that the methods used by His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche are very suitable for this modern era. Loh Seng Piow developed a strong wish to help Rinpoche in spreading the Dharma to the world. With that determination, Loh Seng Piow chose not to pursue his PhD degree in Cambridge University (for which he had been offered a place), resigned from his research job, and joined Tsem Rinpoche as full-time Dharma worker, and has never looked back since.

Meeting Rinpoche was a very refreshing experience for Loh Seng Piow, as he never knew Dharma could be so unconventional yet maintain its essence. As Rinpoche’s personal attendant, Loh Seng Piow has had many incredible moments with Rinpoche and considers himself extremely fortunate because he sees real Dharma in action, both on and off the throne. It challenges him to practice Dharma 24/7. In this way, Rinpoche has blown away his old and persistent way of thinking, which was very much focused on the outer rituals of Dharma.

Having seen that Tsem Rinpoche truly embodies what he teaches, Loh Seng Piow is convinced beyond doubt that it is possible to develop our minds to a higher state, and ultimately achieving enlightenment. All these factors have propelled Loh Seng Piow to take a step further in his Dharma career to become ordained as a pastor in order to be even more effective in sharing and disseminating the Dharma to benefit others.

Pastor Yek Yee

Naturally an introvert, Yek Yee has transformed what was once her weakness into her strength; making what was once impossible now eminently possible.

Independence was forced upon Kok Yek Yee from the tender age of nine, when she had to juggle between work and school to make ends meet. Always the introvert, Yek Yee had few friends and had difficulty expressing herself. So it was unexpected when she chose a career in journalism.

Yek Yee excelled as an award-winning reporter with Guang Ming Daily and Nanyang Siang Pau. Her articles garnered her a fanbase, and in writing, she found an outlet for the thoughts and feelings that she could not verbalise. However, despite her success, Yek Yee was not satisfied. Temporary happiness was not what she was looking for – success, money, relationships, or fame was not the key.

In her search for happiness, Yek Yee met H.E. Tsem Tulku Rinpoche, who told her “don’t retaliate with your speech, but use your power of writing to express yourself”. This led her to join Kechara Media & Publications as a writer; subsequently she was appointed Senior Editor as well as a Liaison to His Eminence.

Yek Yee now holds a core role in Kechara Care, giving advice, tours, counseling and teachings to whoever walks through their doors. Through courage and determination, she has transformed what was once her weakness into her strength; making what was once impossible now eminently possible.

As a Pastor, her patience and open-mindedness developed through her journey with Kechara will bring comfort and solace, and her new-found ability to nurture and teach others will bring hope to many.

Pastor Lanse Chiah

Having been a Pastor for a year, Lanse wishes to continue with her integral duties by renewing her vows again.

Lanse graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) from Jinan University in Guangzhou, China in 1999 and became a part-time lecturer for several years, teaching western medicine in a Traditional Chinese medical college in Kuala Lumpur.

For a long time, Lanse remained an atheist, subconsciously searching for a spiritual guru as she sought answers to questions she harboured in her mind, questions that had led her into a state of depression during her time at university. As such, she would often read philosophical books in her search for answers.

Lanse first came to know of Kechara in 2007, through her friend of over 10 years, Pastor Yek Yee. She was surprised to see a complete transformation in Pastor Yek Yee, whom she had always known as a non-spiritual person. The first book by Kechara that Lanse chanced upon was the Chinese version of Be Greedy. Naturally, Lanse was skeptical at first, thus she read the book in an attempt to find mistakes with the philosophy. However, she couldn’t find any and was left impressed by how logical the explanations in the book were.

In March 2009, Lanse joined Kechara Media & Publications (KMP) part-time to carry out Chinese translation and help with transcription. The following year, she contemplated upon whether to pursue a full-time medical or a Dharma career, finally deciding on the latter. Lanse came to realise that, although both careers share the same motivation of easing people’s sufferings, she felt that her work in Dharma could lead to a greater contribution for the sake of all sentient beings in a deeper, spiritual sense.

Having been a Pastor for a year, Lanse wishes to continue with her integral duties by renewing her vows again.

Pastor Han Nee

It was not until she witnessed how Rinpoche brought peace and comfort to her dying mother, that she realised she also wanted to touch others with the Dharma.

Lim Han Nee, a mother of two, is a retired secondary school principal. She retired in December 2000 after a 30-year career in education. She obtained her Master’s Degree in Education at Leicester University in the UK, at the end of 2001.

After gaining her master’s degree, Han Nee considered further options of embarking on a doctorate in education or spending her years in retirement, travelling and visiting family. At the same time, she was also in search of her spiritual path. She had begun exploring Theravadan and Chinese Mahayana Buddhism for answers to questions she had.

In December 2004, Han Nee attended a teaching retreat on the topic of the Lamrim and White Tara held by His Eminence Gelek Rinpoche. As the retreat proceeded, she found her questions were being answered. Then in June 2005, Han Nee was introduced to Kechara by her sister, where she met her spiritual guide, His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche, who has recently told her that she must go all the way in the Dharma for the benefit of others.

Han Nee had been a school guidance counsellor for nearly twenty years. However, it was not until she witnessed how Rinpoche brought peace and comfort to her dying mother, that she realised she also wanted to touch others with the Dharma.

A member of Kechara’s Puja Team, who conduct sponsored pujas in Shabten Khang, Han Nee is also a member of the Education Division with the portfolio of Content Development. Apart from this, Han Nee is also a member of the weekly Kechara Chat Time team.

Pastor David Lai

In 2014, with a sincere wish to benefit others, David decided to be ordained as a Buddhist pastor to continue serving the spiritual needs of the organisation.

David Lai has been a student of His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche for over a decade now and was one of the founding members of Kechara. He joined Kechara as a full time staff in 2005 and has been working in various departments beginning with the Kechara Paradise outlets.

Right from the beginning, David had been advised by His Eminence to go into writing. Overcoming various hurdles, David finally began his literary career with the publication of his first book and autobiography, There’s No Way But Up in 2009. The book charts his spiritual journey from his childhood and culminates in the meeting with His Eminence.

The positive feedback from this book led him to write various other publications like Vajrayogini and Other Power Places in Nepal – a pilgrim’s guide of Nepal, Tales My Lama Told Me – a book on short stories and Conversations in Love – a book on relationships. These books continue to inspire and bring people onto the Dharma.

Besides writing, David has found his passion in sharing the Dharma since his earlier days working in the Kechara Paradise outlets. Over the years, David has received innumerable teachings from His Eminence, ranging from public teachings to personal instructions and advice. He is known to passionately share these teachings whenever he can and to whomever he meets. In 2014, with a sincere wish to benefit others, David decided to be ordained as a Buddhist pastor to continue serving the spiritual needs of the organisation.

Pastor Henry Ooi

After following Rinpoche as a Dharma student for all these years, learning and practicing the Dharma, Henry knows the importance of the pastors’ role in Kechara founded by Rinpoche. He wants to become a pastor to serve Rinpoche, to serve Kechara, and to serve the public.

Born in 1952 in Penang, Henry moved to Kuala Lumpur in search of work after he finished his Form Five studies in 1969. He worked at different types of jobs and it was when he was jobless in 1997/8 that he met His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche at the house of his cousin, Ruby (now Dato’ Ruby Khong), when Rinpoche was giving a dharma teaching. At that teaching Henry was awed by how Rinpoche taught Dharma with simple yet profound explanations.

With the kind guidance, teachings and Dharma practices by Rinpoche including instruction to engage in their first spiritual retreat, Henry and his wife Angel started a small business that soon became profitable. A few years later after Kechara House Buddhist Association was founded, Rinpoche started to enrol students as liaisons and that was when Henry and Dato’ Ruby offered themselves. Later more students were elected as liaisons that saw the birth of Liaisons Council. The Liaisons Council is now known as the Board of Directors of which Henry is one of its members.

Currently Henry is the Project Director, overseeing the construction and completion of projects in the Kechara Forest Retreat. Prior to this appointment he was the Head of Department in Kechara Paradise retail outlets of which he served for about ten years. He still remains as its company director as well as director for most of the companies within Kechara. He served one term as vice president of Kechara House Buddhist Association from 2012 to 2103.

After following Rinpoche as a Dharma student for all these years, learning and practicing the Dharma, Henry knows the importance of the pastors’ role in Kechara founded by Rinpoche. He wants to become a pastor to serve Rinpoche, to serve Kechara, and to serve the public. As he aspires to be a monk as he grows older, being a pastor of Kechara will pave the way for his aspiration. Henry believes that as one gets older in life, one should have already prepared for the imminent, death. And what a beautiful death it will be, to die in Kechara Forest Retreat in a monk’s robes. This is the kind of death that Henry wants. But before the imminent death happens, Henry wants to continue working in Kechara Forest Retreat, serving the community and whoever comes into it in whatever way he can. And when he is not physically anymore to serve others, he will request instructions from Rinpoche to enter into retreats in Kechara Forest Retreat.

Pastor Patsy Gooi

All that Patsy wants now is to spend the rest of her life doing dharma work, dharma practices and being of benefit to others.

Formerly a full time housewife with plenty of free time, Patsy had the great fortune to visit Gaden Monastery and meet H.E. Tsem Rinpoche almost twenty years ago. That one week stay in the monastery changed her view of life. Prior to that, she had no spiritual inclinations but meeting Rinpoche stirred something inside her, and she realised that there was more to life than just eating, sleeping, shopping and having fun. Rinpoche’s approach to dharma was logical and practical but most importantly, he stressed that we should always focus out and work towards benefitting others. Rinpoche made dharma easy to understand and his advice was and still is, to “change inwardly, not outwardly.”

In 2009, after years of practicing and applying what she had learned from Rinpoche’s teachings, Patsy decided to set up a Kechara retail outlet in Penang to share the dharma with others. She knew that Rinpoche’s teachings were very applicable to the people of our time and that his activities would benefit others just as they had benefited her. She also wanted to repay the kindness of her Guru who had constantly helped and guided her. Today, Kechara Paradise Penang is not just a dharma shop but also organises puja sessions, animal liberation and dharma talks.

In 2010, again with Rinpoche’s blessings, Patsy set up the Kechara Soup Kitchen Activity Center in Penang. Saddened to see the plight of the homeless and urban poor on the streets, Patsy decided to practice “compassion through action” as taught by Rinpoche in the most active way she knows. Today, together with her team of volunteers, Patsy feeds the homeless and urban poor four times a week and provides basic food provisions to many hardcore poor families on a monthly basis.

All that Patsy wants now is to spend the rest of her life doing dharma work and dharma practices, and that she may be of benefit to others.

Pastor Albert Ratchaga

In 2008, Albert Ratchaga began working as a part timer in Kechara Paradise, but as he learned more about the works of Rinpoche and Kechara, Rinpoche’s kindness and compassion touched him deeply. He realised that his work gave his life more meaning and decided to join Kechara full time.

Through his work as a sales executive, Albert was able learn more Dharma from Rinpoche's teachings and use this wisdom to assist those who entered his store to overcome their problems, thus improving their lives.

Albert soon developed a deep wish to follow in Rinpoche’s footsteps and in 2016 was ordained as a Pastor to continue benefitting and serving others.

    I got separated from my partner due to irreconcilable differences and my husband had custody of my 2 kids.     Wow…..stunning Jade Buddha for Universal Peace. The Jade Buddha for Universal Peace sits 8 feet tall and weighs 4-and-a-half tons.It was discovered in 2000 in Canada, later carved by skilful Thai artisans. The four-tonne statue was consecrated by the H H Dalai Lama. The purpose of exhibiting the Jade Buddha around the world was to raise awareness of Buddhism and promote peace. Merely by looking at this beautiful Buddha is a blessing. It seems millions of people, who have seen the statue and have therefore have had strong imprints placed in their minds. Even merely by seeing the Jade Buddha, brings them extensive benefit. The Jade Buddha after touring around the world, was finally placed inside the Great Stupa of Universal Compassion in Bendigo,Victoria, Australia. Back in 2013, Malaysian were lucky to have a look at it, exhibited at Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia.

    We are not alone after-all with many sightings of UFO around the world. Those sightings are frequently reported globally, with significant historical instances. So far no official government investigation has ever publicly concluded that UFOs are indisputably real. Back in June 2010 ,Sichuan Province, China UFOs have been reported , a giant blimp-like object floating overhead in sky. It looked like something straight out of a sci-fi movie, silently hovering above the city recording to reports. On July 7, 2010, Hangzhou Xiaoshan International Airport in China was forced to suspend operations, divert, and ground flights after an unidentified flying object was detected on radar. A reported by local residents, it has seem causing a major, unexplained incident that drew international attention. Not only that pilots of a flight preparing to land spotted an unidentified, glowing object in the sky. Airport was shut down for more than an hour as air traffic controllers saw what they believed to be a UFO buzzing the airport. It is the eighth time that UFOs have been reported in China. In the latest episode, several passenger jets were diverted from the airport at else where for safety reason. After about an hour, the object and the lights suddenly vanished. Through watching the videos , it is very convincing that its UFO.

My Dharma boy (left) and Oser girl loves to laze around on the veranda in the mornings. They enjoy all the trees, grass and relaxing under the hot sun. Sunbathing is a favorite daily activity.
