Early Years Bill Porter was born on 3 October 1943 in Los Angeles, California. His father, William A. The Life of Yul Brynner (1920 – 1985)

Yul Brynner was an actor most famous for his portrayal of King Mongkut in Rodger and Hammerstein’s musical, ‘The King and I’. Writing this article brought back many fond memories of my childhood. When I was a child, my parents let me watch the old 1956 version of ‘The King And I’ and I...

Comparisons of the Dorje Shugden Ban With Historic Persecutions

We respect and admire His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama Tenzin Gyatso for his constant effort to spread the Dharma and benefit millions of people. However, in 1996, the Dalai Lama made a controversial statement about Dorje Shugden that essentially degrades an enlightened deity as a mere worldly spirit and a damaging practice that...

Rexie: the Australian Heroine

I first heard about Rexie, a German Shepherd who was actively saving lives in the 1960s, from my teacher H.E. the 25th Tsem Rinpoche. He sent me a documentary about Rexie and said that he wished to have Rexie’s story on his blog. As I progressed in my research, I became enamoured by this...

Danzan Ravjaa: The Controversial Mongolian Monk

Several months ago, my teacher His Eminence the 25th Tsem Rinpoche gave me a book about the 5th Noyon Hutagt, Danzan Ravjaa (1803 – 1856). This book was titled Lama of the Gobi: How Mongolia’s Mystic Monk Spread Tibetan Buddhism in the World’s Harshest Desert by Michael Kohn. When I read it, I was quite...

Agvan Dorjiev

The idea for this article came about when my teacher, His Eminence the 25th Tsem Rinpoche, mentioned Agvan Dorjiev during a conversation. Through my research, I realised that he had an interesting life. Although he was not Tibetan by birth, he served as the attendant and confidant of the 13th Dalai Lama. In addition, he...

The Samding Dorje Phagmo – The Courageous Female Incarnation Line

I have never heard of the Samding Dorje Phagmo until several weeks ago when my teacher advised me to research and write about this illustrious incarnation line. As I embarked on my research, I became fascinated with this female incarnation line, starting from the 15th century princess Chokyi Dronma, who went against the social norms...

Blog Chat Etiquette

These are some simple guidelines to make the blog chat room a positive, enjoyable and enlightening experience for everyone. Please note that as this is a chat room, we chat! Do not flood the chat room, or post without interacting with others.

EXPAND
Be friendly

Remember that these are real people you are chatting with. They may have different opinions to you and come from different cultures. Treat them as you would face to face, and respect their opinions, and they will treat you the same.

Be Patient

Give the room a chance to answer you. Patience is a virtue. And if after awhile, people don't respond, perhaps they don't know the answer or they did not see your question. Do ask again or address someone directly. Do not be offended if people do not or are unable to respond to you.

Be Relevant

This is the blog of H.E. Tsem Rinpoche. Please respect this space. We request that all participants here are respectful of H.E. Tsem Rinpoche and his organisation, Kechara.

Be polite

Avoid the use of language or attitudes which may be offensive to others. If someone is disrespectful to you, ignore them instead of arguing with them.

Please be advised that anyone who contravenes these guidelines may be banned from the chatroom. Banning is at the complete discretion of the administrator of this blog. Should anyone wish to make an appeal or complaint about the behaviour of someone in the chatroom, please copy paste the relevant chat in an email to us at [email protected] and state the date and time of the respective conversation.

Please let this be a conducive space for discussions, both light and profound.

Many companies especially in overseas are very considerate and allow their employees to bring their dogs to work. I personally think that this is a very good practice where the employees no longer have to worry about leaving pets at home alone. The work environments that cultivate loving kindness, caring and compassion create a much more positive and productive place to work. Besides, it may influence everyone especially those who do not have pet to be more kind to the animals.

Nevertheless, the employer and employees may have to work together to maintain the safe and cleanliness work place such as reduce odour, provide clean air and many others.

Thank you for this interesting article as a reminder to us to love and be kind to animals no matter where we are.

Superb idea and very creative. Home farming in the cities ! Appreciate all the hardwork and ideas to produce Growroom. It’s just like putting a big puzzle and making the whole process so much easier to plant in cities where we always have limited spaces.

We should support more people to come up with such ideas so we can eat our own food and cultivate self sustainability.

When on the hospital bed nearing our last breath, nothing matters except for the practice and transformation we have done in dharma in our lifetime.

Our money, wishes, houses, clothes, jewelry, reputation, spouses, desires, dreams, greed, anger, possessions, explanations will be of no use at all. It will in fact even be a hindrance scratching at our mind’s energy to let go and we cannot.

Since they are no use at that momentous event, we should continue that thought now and understand what we should truly cultivate now. This thought must translate into action not just scholastic thoughts and meanderings of the mind for self deception or imitation spiritual satisfaction. This is what I think daily and everyday as part of my meditations on death and impermanence according to first chapter of Lam Rim.

Amazing and very creative architecture designed space for our home grown foods. It is a good idea for those living in the cities. The Growroom is beautifully produced made it convenience which enables people to connect with nature surrounding with plants. The smell of herbs and plants makes cities dwellers to live in happiness and healthy.
Its takes alot of effort and determination for anyone to build a growroom.Well they can do it,if they have the will power….hoping someday KFR will have one too.
    Thank you Rinpoche for sharing.

This is a very informative articles on dogs in monasteries and Tibetan breed. Gonsar Rinpoche explained it very clearly on the different breeds and how dogs are taken care and live in monasteries. We should also take good care of the dogs as they are living being in different form. Hence we should take care of their food and their well beings and not treat them like an ‘item’ to reject or discard them when our selfish mind arise.

Thank you Datuk May for sharing this article. I do know some people who will only give when they have extra or only if they do not need the items. There are some who would keep giving even if they do not have much because they understand that his gift (whether it is time, resource, material, knowledge and etc) is for the benefit of others.

I think it all comes from each individual generousity, compassion and kindness. I believe all these good values can be practised and we can be better each day. We should not give up but be aware of our weakness and keep transforming to be better.

“Somehow, Rinpoche knew I did not believe in Buddhism and so he used a skillful way to give me a teaching. He said that even though I can’t see the Buddha, that does not mean that the Buddha does not exist. This is just like electricity; we can’t see electricity but when we see the lights are turned on, it proves electricity does exist. Similarly, when we see the growing Sangha community and the temples, it proves the existence of Buddha, because without electricity, there would be no light and without the Buddha, there would be no Sangha. After listening to that sound logic, I was still stuck on the need for more proof that the Buddha existed. But it made me think deeper because what Rinpoche said made a lot of sense.” – Pastor Albert Rachaga

We definitely would love to read more stories like this. It is so heart warming to know that people do not care if it is an animal or human but extend their assistance to save the horse. What makes me surprise was the guy who was captured by Officer Frank Pomodoro came to help the horse too.

It is true that everyone has a Bodhi mind and compassion. We just need to practise and express it.
