Nepal Disaster 2015

Apr 26, 2015 | Views: 9,578

On April 25, 2015 an earthquake measuring 7.9 on the Richter scale hit Nepal. The epicentre of the quake was in Lamjung, 50 miles (80km) north-west of Kathmandu. Both Kathmandu and Pokhara were very badly affected, with the strong earthquake being felt as far away as Pakistan, Bangladesh, Delhi (India) and Shigatse (Tibetan Autonomous Region, China). This was the worst tremor in the Himalayan region in over 80 years. At the time of writing, 1,400 people are confirmed dead, with at least 1,700 people injured. Thousands more remain homeless due to countless buildings having collapsed or being in danger of collapsing. Older cities, for example Bhaktapur, are very badly affected because many of the buildings which were ancient traditional architecture have been reduced to rubble. Even the famous Boudhanath Stupa has a huge crack at the top.

The earthquake also triggered a deadly avalanche on Mount Everest and 18 people are confirmed dead. Part of the base camp at Everest where mountaineers stay to acclimatise to the altitude, is now partially buried and it is reported that at least 1,000 climbers were in base camp or on the mountain at the time of the earthquake. Many are leaving the mountain now, to seek safer shelter elsewhere.

Close to the epicentre of the earthquake. As you can see, the damage is extensive. No photos have been released of Lamjung, the actual epicentre, although India media reports that almost the entire town has vanished.

The Nepali government has declared a state of emergency and along with many NGOs, they have sent out appeals to the international community for assistance. Some governments have responded to their request, for example Indian prime minister Narendra Modi who ordered an immediate dispatch of relief and medical teams to Nepal, and the evacuation of Indian tourists. The Chinese government have also prepared their emergency relief team to go to Nepal to help.

The authorities in Nepal are working hard to organise rescue efforts for their people but it is difficult. Not only is the country poor, but the authorities do not have earthquake preparedness training and equipment to deal with such a huge disaster.

The epicentre of the earthquake on April 25, 2015

At present, the authorities have advised people not to stay indoors due to potential aftershocks, and to look for safe drinking water. As a result, many people have gathered in open spaces like fields to stay away from falling buildings. They are in for a very difficult night however because the latest weather forecast says that temperatures will drop to 12°C (54°F) in Kathmandu, with rural areas and places in higher altitudes likely to be much colder. Hence the Nepali authorities are trying hard to get to the most vulnerable people who have nowhere to stay for the night. In this task, they are facing difficulties reaching rural areas because many have become inaccessible due to road closures.

We in Kechara have been doing pujas all day today, and will do more tomorrow for our friends in Nepal. I have also ordered candles to be lit for Nepal. Life in Nepal is already very difficult and on top of this, now they have an earthquake which will add to the suffering to the people. I pray they will have a swift recovery and that the people of Nepal will unite to help each other in this catastrophe. I am very saddened and worried about this situation. I personally have good friends who live in Nepal.

I send my prayers to the people of Nepal especially and also the other affected areas Pakistan, Bangladesh, Delhi (India) and Shigatse (Tibetan Autonomous Region, China).

NEPAL

More photos which were taken near the epicentre of the earthquake.

A large crack can clearly be seen on the famous Boudhanath Stupa, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The smaller stupas surrounding Boudhanath are badly affected as well

Many of my Malaysian friends know this area well as we have visited many times on pilgrimage. We even have Kechara Lounge right next to the Stupa itself.

The ancient Dharhara tower, a landmark in historic Kathmandu city has completely collapsed as a result of the earthquake.

Nepali people come together to assist the injured and those trapped in the rubble.

Large cracks have appeared on the roads throughout Nepal, making it very difficult for rescue and recovery efforts.

Thanks to modern technology, our Nepali friends here in Malaysia were able to contact their loved ones back home and confirm everyone is okay. Some of their family homes have collapsed but thankfully none of their family members are badly injured.

Nepal’s narrow streets have made it very difficult for rescuers to reach some of the more densely-populated areas. Collapsed buildings have made narrow alleyways completely inaccessible.

Entire homes have collapsed while surrounding buildings remain in danger of collapse. Many are reported missing and feared trapped under the rubble.

Rescue workers rush a victim to receive medical treatment.

Nepal is famous for its ancient and unique architecture. However, they were not built to withstand such shocks and many have collapsed completely.

Monasteries near Boudhnath Stupa were badly affected. Everyone has been evacuated into safe open spaces.

It is a strain even for modern technology to protect buildings in earthquake-prone zones. It is no surprise many of Nepal’s old structures were unable to cope with today’s earthquake measuring 7.9 on the Richter scale.

The difference is very stark and obvious.

Even more modern buildings were not spared. The earthquake caused widespread damage. Not only have many people lost their homes but hundreds of businesses are affected too.

With so little to their name already, many Nepali people face an uncertain future and have nowhere else to go. For most, it will be a struggle to rebuild their lives.

In a country where the majority earn a subsistence income just enough to support themselves, Nepal faces a long and slow road to recovery.

Residents have been instructed by the authorities to remain outdoors and to seek shelter in safe places. There is a fear of aftershocks causing more already-vulnerable buildings to fully collapse

The earthquake left many buildings in danger of collapse.

With authorities straining to assist everyone, the locals are coming together to help the vulnerable and injured.

Residents have been advised to stay away from collapsed buildings and not to take matters into their own hands. However, with so many trapped and authorities finding it difficult to reach everyone, it is understandable that many feel they have no choice.

Clearing all the rubble will require teamwork.

It will be many years before Nepal fully recovers from the damage caused by this earthquake.

May all who perished in this tragedy take a swift, good rebirths. OM MANI PADME HUM.

As the number of casualties rise, Kathmandu’s main hospital struggles to treat the estimated 1,700 people who are injured so far and the number is rising. Countless others who are not injured but have been left without homes, face many nights sleeping on the street.

Scene outside Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital. Overwhelmed with the injured, many have to wait outside to receive treatment.

At other hospitals, the wounded are treated outside the hospitals which have run out of space inside.

It is uncertain when any buildings will be declared fit for habitation and residents will be allowed to return to their homes. Many of Kathmandu’s buildings, for example, were not constructed according to any building or safety regulations.

It is believed that the earthquake destroyed many precious holy artifacts.

Rural areas have become near-impossible to reach, with mountain roads completely impassable due to major rock slides triggered by the earthquake.

Travellers lend a hand to help clear the roads.

Tour buses struggle to make their way through, as will rescuers and their equipment.

The Indian and Chinese governments have prepared their emergency rescue teams to assist Nepal in their rescue and recovery efforts. Here are the Chinese relief workers ready to head for Nepal.

The Chinese International Search and Rescue Team sets off for Nepal with specially-trained canines.

Rescue and relief aid on its way from India.

Within hours of the earthquake, and despite having casualties and damage of their own, the Indian government dispatched two military aircraft filled with relief workers, medicines and blankets.

The government has asked their people to gather in open spaces away from buildings that are at risk of collapse.

Too scared to return to their homes, and warned by the authorities to be ready for aftershocks, people prepare to spend a night on the streets.

With the latest weather forecasts predicting rain and temperatures as low as 12°C (54°F) in Kathmandu, the survivors are in for an uncomfortable night.

Food will have to be carefully rationed over the next few days as supplies may be difficult to come by. With so much destruction, cooking equipment and facilities were also lost. The government has advised their citizens to secure access to clean drinking water.

SHIGATSE

Neighbouring regions were not spared. In northern India, there is an estimated 34 deaths. In Shigatse, T.A.R., it is believed at least six have perished and in Bangladesh, two people.

The earthquake was so powerful, it was felt as far away as Pakistan, Bangladesh, Delhi in India and Shigatse (Tibetan Autonomous Region, China).

In Shigatse (where these pictures were taken), the earthquake measured 5.9 on the Richter scale.

Although not as extensive as Nepal, the damage to Shigatse was clear. Residents have been told not to enter buildings until further instruction.

The people of Shigatse are taking shelter in open areas.

The extent of the damage in Shigatse ranged from major cracks appearing on buildings…

…to complete collapse.

INDIA

People gathered in an open space after earthquake tremors were felt in Bhopal, in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh.

Bystanders looked at a collapsed house in Siliguri, in the Indian state of West Bengal.

Initial reports suggest 39 casualties as a result of the earthquake, with Bihar state being one of the worst hit. At least 26 people died in Bihar and 113 were injured while in Uttar Pradesh, at least 10 people died and 34 were injured. In West Bengal, at least three people died and more than 30 were injured.

MALAYSIA

As soon as I heard about the devastation in Nepal, I asked my friends in Kechara Forest Retreat to light 108 candles and dedicate it to the people of Nepal and their country.

Our wonderful Kechara Forest Retreat team lit the candles outside of Wisdom Hall, in front of our stone statue of Je Tse Zin Ma (Tsongkhapa in Long Life Form).

I requested our students to do a Dorje Shugden puja for our Nepali brothers and sisters. Here they are setting up the tsok offerings.

Pastor Shin sets up the altar for our Dorje Shugden puja.

I am so happy that our Nepali boys learned how to do Dorje Shugden puja in Nepali. Now they can recite prayers and dedicate it to their friends, loved ones, to the people of Nepal and to their beloved country.

I wanted to speak to our Nepali friends to offer my condolences and some words of comfort. KB, who is seated next to me, helped me to translate my message to them by speakerphone as I called them.

Our kind Kecharians doing Dorje Shugden puja in Nepali and in English. May Nepal recover swiftly, may all who perished take good rebirths and may no one come to any further harm. We have many Nepali friends who came to join in doing this puja. There are many Nepali expatriates who work in Malaysia.

In Kuala Lumpur, our team did a Dorje Shugden puja and in Kechara Forest Retreat, our team there also did a Dorje Shugden puja and lit 108 candles for the people of Nepal.

I asked my students to focus and to request Bhagwan Dorje Shugden to assist the people of Nepal.

Our Nepali friends, led by KB, lit 108 candles for the people of Nepal while reciting OM BENZA WIKI BITANA SOHA.

The candle stands were used today for the first time, to dedicate to our Nepali friends and the nation.

On the morning of April 26, 2015 our pastors and fellow teachers led their Sunday children’s Dharma class in offering candles and prayers for the people of Nepal.

Everyone queued up to take turns offering their candles and prayers.

Younger ones were assisted by our kind Kecharian Sunday Dharma class teachers. It makes me very happy to see our children being introduced to Dharma at such a young age. Dharma is the best gift any parent can introduce to their children’s lives because Dharma helps a child to learn how to make the right decisions for themselves and others when they are older.

Pastor Adeline offering her prayers for the swift recovery of the country of Nepal. May all rescue and aid efforts to benefit the Nepali people quickly come to fruition.

Everyone offers three prostrations to the Three Jewels before reciting their prayers, led by Pastor Niral.

Our young Kecharians focused strongly on the people of Nepal.

Since the earthquake struck on Saturday, the Nepali authorities have been working around the clock to rescue survivors and recover bodies.

Nepali police in Tribhuvan International Airport work to keep the crowd under control. Flights leaving the country are few and far between as huge delays are being caused by heavy air traffic, as Nepal continues to receive aid from around the world.

The cities’ narrow streets are difficult for the heavier machinery to navigate. As a result, much of the debris management and clearance has to be done by hand.

At Trishuli Bazar, rescuers carry the injured and elderly to waiting Indian airforce helicopters as they evacuate victims of Saturdays earthquake to Kathmandu. Rescue workers are still struggling to reach vulnerable mountain villages, which are now inaccessible due to roads being blocked by rock and landslides triggered by the quake. As a result, the death toll is expected to rise.

April 28, 2015 @ 7:18pm (GMT 8+)

  • Nine out of 10 Nepalese troops are said to be involved in the rescue efforts. About 90,000 personnel (of approximately 100,000) from the army and police have joined the quake effort.
  • Some 200 climbers stranded by the quake on Mount Everest are slowly being rescued. Because of the high altitude, the choppers can only ferry two people at a time. Up till now, about 60 of the climbers have been brought to safety.
  • The official death toll has reached 4,585. Approximately 8,235 are injured. (Source: Home Ministry)
  • 1,441 of the fatalities and 4,900 of the injured were from Kathmandu Valley.
  • Prime Minister says the death toll could reach 10,000.
  • Another 1,180 were from the district of Sindulpalchuk, east of the Nepalese capital.
  • Eastern Region: 51 killed and 212 injured
  • Central Region: 2727 killed and 2757 injured
  • Western Region: 264 killed and 350 injured.
  • Up to 8 million (more than quarter of population) have been affected by the earthquake. (Source: United Nations)
  • 1.4 million people are in need of food aid.
  • Over 100 aftershocks in the last 72 hours. Two were over 6 on the Richter scale and 96 were over 4 on the Richter scale.
  • Number of tremors and their intensity has gone down.
  • In India, 85 people were killed by the earthquake. China reported 25 people died in Tibet.
  • Sunday’s aftershock near Kathmandu resulted in an evacuation of airport officials. When a Thai Airways plane attempted to land in Nepal shortly after, the pilot learned the air traffic control tower was completely unoccupied.
  • Growing fears that there will be an outbreak of diseases like cholera and diarrhea due to lack of sanitation.
  • Homelessness is a growing problem. In Kavre district, for example, they have a population of 380,000. Not more than 250 were killed and around 900 were injured, but about 100,000 people had lost their homes.
  • In Bhaktapur, around 30,000 are thought to be homeless.
  • Villages near the epicenter are desperate for help. Rescuers have still been unable to reach them. Helicopters are struggling to conduct surveillance flights around mountain villages because of heavy cloud cover. Reports are coming in stating some villages in the Gorkha area are 90% to totally destroyed.
  • Rescuers are succumbing to exhaustion, due to three straight nights of frantic searching. They have been forced to use their bare hands, with no protective gear or heat detectors while searching for survivors in the ruins of Dharahara Tower.
  • Authorities are reporting that in some cases, entire families are buried under the rubble. They come to this conclusion because no one is left alive to report them missing.
  • National flag will be flown at half-mast for next three days
  • Five of Nepal’s eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites crumbled to the ground in Saturday’s earthquake. (Source: National Geographic).
  • Mass cremation of bodies has begun. As all the bodies could not be accommodated at the Arya and Rajrajeshwori cremation sites, the rest are being cremated at the banks of the Bagmati River.
  • Pashupati is now burning bodies 24 hours a day, hundreds of bodies at a time. On a normal day, they cremate 20-30 bodies a day. In the last three days, they have cremated 1200 bodies, and are running low on timber for cremations. The only light from Kathmandu at night is from that area.

  • United Kingdom: the Gurkha Welfare Trust which looks after veterans in Nepal, has mobilised medical teams and staff to try to get a better picture of the devastation in more remote valleys. Three Gurkha initial response teams have been dispatched from Kathmandu to get much needed aid and medical help to Gorkha, Lamjung and Bagmati. Each team includes additional Welfare officers, doctors, nurses, porters and drivers. A team of British Army Gurkha soldiers left the UK earlier this week, and are due to arrive in Nepal. The men from the Queen’s Gurkha Engineers flew out of RAF Brize Norton aboard a C-17, taking with them some 30 tonnes of aid supplies.

A team of well-trained doctors carrying important equipment with them will be travelling to Chautara and Tipini in the Sindhupalchok district tomorrow with 20 other Nepali medical staff. They will be the first medical team in Tipini, and their arrival will help relieve some of the pressure that the current medical team in Chautara is facing.
  • NGOs are also making their own disaster relief packages containing tarp / tents, blankets, food, hand sanitiser, water purification tablets and solar-powered torches.

Bad weather and rains have made for miserable living situations.

However, ongoing aftershocks lead many residents to be fearful of returning to their homes, many of which have not yet been inspected for safety or have been deemed uninhabitable.

At Bhotetol Village in Sindupalchowk district, villagers came to assist a truck delivering relief supplies.

A local NGO was delivering 70 sacks of rice, three sacks of dhal and 30 tarpaulins to this village about 4.5 hours from Kathmandu.

At Jaisi Village in Nuwakot district, until the NGO arrived, the villagers had not yet received any outside help.

It took the aid workers four hours to reach the village – for the last 40 minutes, they had to walk their supplies up the hill.

The NGO distributed 100 tarpaulins and mats. All three school buildings in the village have collapsed, leaving the whole area around them without any schools.

In Chhogam Village in Sindupalchowk district, the NGO provided tarpaulins and mats to 45 families.

The group drove for three hours, then walked for six hours uphill to bring supplies to the villagers.

Local NGOs have been making use of helicopters to reach hard-to-access villages. At Kutumtsang Village in Nuwakot district, helicopter weight restrictions meant only 22 10-kg food packs (rice, dhal, cooking oil, salt), 70kg of tarps and packed noodles could be delivered.

The supplies delivered were enough for 22 out of 28 families living in the village.

Its really sad to see that Nepal has been hit by such a terrible earthquake. Nepal is already so poor, with families earning just enough money to support themselves. It would take many years to recover. Hundreds of ancient sites have been damaged or destroyed completely ,scores are dead and thousands are left homeless forced to sleep outside in the cold weather.
This disaster really tells us that nothing is permanent, no matter where we are we can be killed or injured, whether we are a 10000 meters in the air or 100 meters below sea level anything can happen to use. We are never safe anywhere.

I really hope that the dead will have a good rebirth, the injured be treated and healed and may the hungry receive food and drinks.

  2. Edward Ooi on May 17, 2015 at 12:36 am

Three things I have learned from this blog post are:

No.1 We always have to help each other regardless of the race and religion. Just like the China, they were one of the first countries that send help to Nepal. Although they are from different races and China do not owe Nepal a favor, China still helped them anyways.

No.2 Life is very fragile, people can sometimes easily lose their lives and homes. Nothing lasts forever and death is uncertain. And because of that, we should cherish our lives and our love ones more especially our parents. Even there is any disagreement, try your best to let go even though is not easy because they will not be with us forever or it might be the other way around.

No.3 There is a part in the blog post that mentioned this “The United States has deployed urban search and rescue specialists, with specially-trained sniffer dogs, to assist in the rescue efforts.” Why do we need dogs to help us to find people who were buried under the buildings? Because dog’s nose is 30 times better than humans, and they can easily find a person under the buildings a lot faster than us humans can. Therefore, it is a proof that humans are not the most superior being on this planet. The relationship between humans and animals are interdependent, so we cannot take advantage on them instead, we should be kind to them.

  3. Edward Ooi on May 16, 2015 at 9:44 pm

It is really scary how an earthquake is capable of destroying buildings. the death toll has been estimated more than 8,000 deaths. And just a few days ago, another earthquake stroked Nepal. It is really sad that the country was already in a bad condition because they have not enough money to make the citizens lives better, and that was even before the earthquake. This is going to take a very long time for the country to recover from its lost but I do pray for the country to recover fast and swiftly. PRAY FOR NEPAL!!!!!!!!

  4. Patsy on May 1, 2015 at 12:59 pm

Thank you, Rinpoche, for all the latest updates and detailed information on the Nepal Earthquake Disaster.

It is so heart breaking to see so many lives, homes, historical and holy buildings destroyed. It must be so painful and heart-wrenching for the families whose loved ones were killed, maimed or still missing in this disaster. Even though international aid has come forth, yet there are still so many missing or trapped under the rubble and I hope those survivors can be discovered soon especially in those remote and hard to reach areas.

As for our Nepali boys who are here with us, thank you, Rinpoche for initiating to rebuilt the homes of those affected.

The whole world mourn in sadness of this tragedy. Let us all pray and send our positive energies to all who are affected.

    Om Mani Padme Hum.
    Om Benza Wiki Bittana Soha.

  5. Irene Lim on Apr 30, 2015 at 8:53 pm

I pray all be strong in the wake of such tragedy and pain. May all be blessed by Lord Dorje Shugden. Hopefully the rebuilding and restoration will make Nepal a greater spiritual nation than before.

  6. Uncle Eddie on Apr 30, 2015 at 5:20 pm

Excellence news on Jane and June Gan! It is said that whether we are masters, disciples or entourage, when we entrust ourselves to our great Protector, He will guard us unceasingly in pacifying all negative circumstances and grant us safeguards and whatever desired attainments in our deep trusted wish! All our prayers and hopeful thoughts are with the victims and sufferers of this terrible catastrophy. Thank you Rinpoche for your kind sharing of these detailed informations and updates. Om mani padme Hung.

  7. Li Kheng on Apr 30, 2015 at 4:37 pm

    Dear Rinpoche and Blog Team

Thank you so very much for for informing and keeping all updated on the Nepal Disaster. This is a wake up call to us who are safe and enjoying the blessing and grace of mother nature in the safe grounds of our own home.

It is a call for us to be conscious of our environment and earthquakes are natural phenomenon but their frequency and damage is influenced by our interaction with Mother Nature. Moderate actions cause moderate consequences. I hope that the lives lost (very very very sorry for these losses and suffering!!!) will not be completely wasted if they remind us to live in greater harmony with the environment. Moderation is the key… So, it is not about stop using technology, stop driving, stop all air conditioning etc. IT IS NOT ABOUT THAT AT ALL.

It is about a vegetarian day a week (if 1 billion people eat vegan ONE DAY A WEEK, it will amount to taking 7.6 million cars of the road after 52 weeks). It is about buy what you need…consume in moderation. Replace SOME (not all) of our grocery shopping with affordable eco-friendly consumables. It is about taking a moment to appreciate the environment because when you are conscious of her kindness and awesomeness, you will choose to preserve her.

This post also reminds me to appreciate life by being aware that death can take us any moment. 1) Appreciate the ones that we love and 2) do not waste time and energy to make enemies because when the ground below us is shattered, all this does not matter.

It is prompts me to think that life is very short. What do I want to use my life span for? Combine some activities that will create greater sense of fulfillment within us NOW. Do not wait because we are too busy. Pick up the phone to call someone you wanted to call now. Send a whatssap message now. Send a facebook greeting now. Technology can help to make us more connect…more human in this way.

It is totally heart breaking to see the photos of earthquake calamity in Nepal. While we mourn for the victims and send them our sincere prayers and helps through the established authorities, we need to reflect on this great catastrophe and suffering.

What cause this natural disaster and why so many lives lost and many others severely affected?

Some may said it is due to wrath of God but why would God punish?

As Buddhist, this is the time we must seriously checking our own actions and chief of it all is constantly checking the motive of all our actions.

Although technically from Buddhist perspective, the earthquakes happen due to another Laws of Nature (Niyama) i.e. Utu Niyama, it is our own karma that determine how we are being affected by it.

In the end, it is still our own karma / actions that will determine our well-being and happiness.

So, be kind, be generous, be a good person that will benefit others.

    Om Mani Pedme Hum

    With folded hands,
    Pastor Gim Lee

“Utu Niyama is the natural law of non-living matter.”

It is very sad to learn about this earthquake happened in Nepal. I have several Nepalese friends in Malaysia and they are all very nice person. However it is also very heart warming to know that several countries had offered their help to Nepal immediately after the earthquake. This is the time that the Nepalese people know who are their true friends. My prayers for all Nepalese people and all rescue workers in Nepal. May they fulfill their mission without obstacles and be safe.

This is terrible. I cannot imagine how people have to suffer now in this situation. Everything is gone, family might be hurt or even killed, the house might be gone, the street destroyed, even entire villages.

Thank You to everyone for the prayers and the pujas. May the affected areas be safe soon. May those passed away have a good rebirth and those hurt and traumatized find relief. May the country have the strength to rebuild and bring security for their people.

Thanks to all the hardworking people who are in Nepal and surroundings to safe lives and to help.

Thanks for all these detailed informations and all the updates.

The earthquake news happen so sudden when i notice. Many of our Nepal friends was very worry about their family safety. Kechara Forest Retreat Team immediately did puja and make candle offering toward the earthquake victims.

Rinpoche also called our Nepal friends give them advice and make prayer for their family. Kecharian had arrange many prayers and puja to be done for this incidents to show our support and concern. Good news is later we get many news our Nepal friends and their family all safe.

Thank you for news and updates on the earthquake disaster that struck Nepal in this blogpost. Rinpoche and Kecharians continue their prayers and pujas for the victims and survivors and their families.

Many have lost their homes and many others are still buried under the rubble. Efforts by rescue teams were initially hampered by the series of after shocks that followed the devastating earthquake. Now, these aftershocks have died down. The massive rescue will have begun already. Many countries and aid groups have gone in to help in the work of rescue and relief. Survivors have been told to stay out in the open for their own safety. But they are without adequate supply of water, food and other necessities. May the work of the relief and rescue teams continue smoothly and successfully for the benefit of the victims of the earthquake.

Official death toll in Nepal 5,057
    Approximately injured 10,915
    Internally displaced 454,768

Recently, there have been a lot of disasters and its really heartbreaking to read about all these bad news.

And now, this. Earthquakes come without warning and those people didn’t even know what happened until its too late. Especially those that are in the rural areas. May those who need the help be reached asap. I hope that more survivors can be found.

But I am really glad to see that people of other countries have come forward to help in any way they can without hesitating.

How life is truly precious and we must do the best we can with it.

Thank you Rinpoche for compiling and updating us on this disastrous earthquake in Nepal. It is so heartbreaking to see all these photos as Nepal is a country close to my heart, having visited more than 10 times and have many good friends there. We also have many wonderful Nepalese boys in our organisation.

Death toll has rose to above 4,700, with more than 9,200 injured. These grim figures are likely to get even worse as hopes of rescuing any more survivors diminish every hour due to geographical challenges and more bad weather is forecast for the region in the coming days. Even as international aid pours into the country, overwhelmed hospitals are lacking vital medical supplies, people remain buried in the wreckage of buildings and rescuers are struggling to reach hard-hit rural areas near the quake’s epicenter.

Thank you Rinpoche for initiating the rebuilding of homes for our affected boys. Kechara will come together to ensure that their lives can get back to normal as soon as possible as this shell-shocked nation reels from its deadliest natural disaster in more than 80 years.

It’s really heart breaking looking at the victims of this natural disaster. So many suffered and young to old.

Thanks to Rinpoche and the team that tirelessly keep gathering latest update of the situation and pictures and also with all necessary and useful information for public to understand and in the know of their latest condition and situation.

Rinpoche actions always consistent in helping others which always give the best to make sure it’s benefit others completely.

Beside constantly updating on the blog Rinpoche also do Dorje Shugden prayers and encourage everyone to do so for the family, friends and the people in Nepal.
We at Kechara Forest Retreat has been continuously doing prayers and offered 108 candles for 3 days.

Constant care from Rinpoche is consistent and may more people get a great info from the tsemrinpoche.com and together we contribute either in monetary form or in any means to reduce the suffering of the victims in Nepal.

Thank you Rinpoche and the writers for working round the clock to provide us the latest updates and pictures of the Nepal tragedy. There are many useful information here. The teachings and prayers are valuable and comforting. There is indeed not much we can do physically as we are not trained for these rescues. However we can extend our care and love to those in need via the power of the Dharma and prayers. OM BENZA WIKI BITANA SOHA .

When Rinpoche first heard about the Nepal Earthquake on Saturday, Rinpoche was travelling. This did not stopped Rinpoche from

    1. Organising Puja to be done by our own Nepalese boys for the family and the victims of the Earthquake
    2. Organising calls to be made to our Nepalese friends in Nepal to check on their condition
    3. Arranging pledges from close students to enable us to look after the welfare of our boys and friends in Nepal

Rinpoche himself stayed up to 11am on Sunday to perform prayers for the victims and the country. And in between the commotion, Rinpoche insisted to be kept informed of the situation every hour.

As I type this, more prayers are being conducted by our own Kechara members in both the gompa and Kechara Forest Retreat.

Rinpoche told me on the phone that we should pray for

    1. the dying or death to have a better rebirth
    2. the living to have strength to continue on
    3. the country to rebuild themselves

Tonight, there will be another set of Dorje Shugden prayers, including lighting of 108 candles to our Protector conducted by Pastor Henry Ooi in Kechara Forest Retreat for the Nepal Earthquake victims.

Kechara thoughts and prayers are with the victims on this catastrophic event.

May there be light in the darkness felt in Nepal.

To begin to even comprehend or feel what Nepal and its people are going through is almost impossible. I remember the minute Rinpoche found out about the earthquake, Rinpoche had sent out many messages of concern for his friends in Nepal, arranged for prayers to be done, candles to be lit, and asked us to remember their pain, to propel us to always be kind to the foreign workers and suffering in their own ways. Having to leave their country, culture, loved ones, friends, comfort behind and go to a foreign land to earn a living goes far beyond our own daily suffering that we seem to be constantly faced with. Imagine being alone, working for others in a foreign land, having no friends, not enough money, a huge responsibility back home, and add in the devastation this earthquake has caused, the worry, anxiety, pain, and you are not allowed to fly back to be there with your fellow countrymen to rebuild your lives and country. If they go back, they go back to.. fear, horror, lost, devastation, destruction, death, and might have lost all their possessions. My heart goes out for them, and the least I can continue to do, is send my prayers and good wishes, and be good and kind to the Nepalese and foreign workers I cross paths with.

Thank you Rinpoche for your never ending compassion and kindness. It is also great to see countries unite, especially China, who immediately responded and sent help and assistance over to Nepal.

  22. Joy on Apr 27, 2015 at 1:28 am

Thank you Rinpoche for this comprehensive post, updates, and advice given to our dear Napali friends.

My deepest heartfelt prayers and thoughts to all Nepali brothers and sisters and friends. Condolences to those who has passed, may take a swift and good rebirth.

I myself am still in shock and sadness of this whole incident. Nepal has been such a beloved pilgrimage place with so many nice warm precious memories. Such a despair to see so many suffering, so many holy sacred temples and stupas in ruins now. The people are always polite, gentle, smiling no matter how tough life presents to them. It is already such a poor country and now this tragedy happen. I cannot even begin to fathom how they feel, sleeping outside in the gold uncertain weather with scarce food and clean water. So much hardship for them, unbelievable.

But I am so glad that in times of such dire straits situation, Nepal’s neighbours India and China immediately took action to give a helping hand. That is the beauty of humanity, of harmony, of love that is appreciated by all especially our Nepali friends I am sure. Will continue to send positive lights and prayers… may Dorje Shugden swiftly and quickly help them!

It’s very heart wrenching to look through the pictures and updates of the current situation in Nepal. The pain they are suffering is indescribable, as I am writing here, the number of casualties is increasing. I have also read about the aftershocks, they are so bad that even part of Taiwan is affected. I pray that may everyone be safe and may the deceased take good rebirths. I’m very touched to see countries such as China, India, Japan etc are offering their help to Nepal. OM BENZA WIKI BITANA SOHA, may everyone be safe. _/\_

Good news! After the Dorje Shugden puja, Jane and June Gan were found and in good condition. Their parents were very happy to let us know this great news! Especially in times of trouble such as this earthquake, we do need divine assistance.

We are very lucky and thankful for Rinpoche to teach us this sacred practice.

      • JP on Apr 27, 2015 at 12:42 am

Our Kecharian member brought Jane and June’s parents to today’s Dorje Shugden puja at Kechara House which was held specifically for the people in Nepal. The puja started at 1pm and ended at 2.30pm.

Jane and June were trekking in the Mt Everest base camp area when the earthquake happened. Their parents lost touch with them after the earthquake and were extremely worried.

At 3pm, the parents called to inform our Kecharian member that Jane and June are both safe in Nepal. Our Kecharian member was very happy and relieved that the puja helped his friends. He asked me to thank Pastor Adeline and Jerry for assisting in explaining about Kechara, Lama Tsongkhapa and Dorje Shugden to his friends.

Kechara is dedicated to bringing hope and relief to everyone without prejudice.

The conditions are so bad as we can see from the pictures and the videos that so many people have loss their home and family. Very interesting and informative article. In most cultures, women is consider as lower in status compared with men. Ancient times in India, man took the lead while women is seconded. But times has changed for the better where women are not degraded in society. They receive equal recognition, appreciation, and stature, yet in countries and places around the world, women are still viewed as inferior and treated accordingly. But in Buddhism women have been increasing in number and has proven that many of them have gained full enlightenment in a female body. In Buddhism is concerned there’s no discrimination toward women ,both men and women are equal. There‘s many female Mahasiddhas and Yoginis as in this blog. May it inspired many more to come. Interesting article and its great sharing knowledge.

Sleep paralysis is a feeling of being conscious but unable to move. It occurs when a person passes between stages of wakefulness and sleep. During these transitions, one may be unable to move or speak for a few seconds up to a few minutes. Some people may also feel pressure or a sense of choking. Sleep paralysis is a temporary inability to move or speak. It’s not harmful and should pass quickly, but at times can be frightening. It can affect anyone but is most common in young adults and they might have hallucination. The scary facts about sleep paralysis is those who suffer from it have said it felt like someone was choking them on their chest so they could not breathe.
As for me I have not experience as such before as least i know now what i can to do.
Thank you Vinnie Tan for sharing. Interesting read of these stories related to sleep paralysis.

nteresting as this texts been composed after being inspired to do so . That’s interesting as this nature are traditionally considered exceptionally potent in their blessings if the claim of divine inspiration is authentic. According to the account in the introduction, the author composed this text after being divinely inspired to do so. It’s a very rare kind and its acceptance been recognised and received praise by very high lamas of our tradition. Reading this article tell us all of how powerful Dorje Shugden when we invoke in our prayers.

That’s wonderful Rinpoche has composed prayers in English so as everyone could recite and practice. For beginners is such a meaningful insights and perspectives without commitments and initiation. Moreover each prayers is for a specific blessing that helps practitioners to gain attainments and overcome obstacles. Easy and simple for everyone to start off.
We are fortunate that everything Rinpoche did brought tremendous benefit to all sentient beings. Whatever prayers Rinpoche has composed are especially potent with blessings.

A great article , revisit this again of Tibetan Lamas and their dogs. As now I have a pet doggie with me, I came to understand more of them . Dogs are the most amazing creatures, they give us unconditional love. For me, they are the role model for being alive. Buddhists believe dogs also have the potential to become enlightened and can teach us about responsibility, love, and other Buddhist principles. The Q & A by Sandra Klein’s interview with the Venerable Gonsar Rinpoche gave us a better understanding and very informative of Tibetan dogs under Lamas care. ccording to the Buddha Dharma, all sentient beings have Buddha nature — from ants to humans. Though we often look at dogs as wonderful companions an teach us to embrace Buddhist principles. They, themselves, embody many of these principles.
Thank you Rinpoche for this great sharing.

Living with my wife, whose world is meticulously painted with the hues of OCD, is a journey that intertwines the essence of love with the complexities of the human mind. Her relentless pursuit of cleanliness and order, transforming even the most negligible corner into a testament of organization, often dances on the fine line between admiration and frustration. The sight of her steering clear from trash bins as if they were labyrinths of chaos, serves as a poignant reminder of the battles she fights within. Yet, it’s through these very battles that I’ve learned the profound language of patience and the unspoken strength of support. Therapy, in its gentle embrace, has been a beacon of light for her, guiding her through the stormy seas of OCD. It has not only offered her solace but has also unveiled the strength of her spirit, teaching us both the beauty of resilience. As she journeys through the pathways of healing, I stand by her, a testament to the power of love and the enduring promise of hope. Together, we navigate the complexities of her world, discovering that within the challenges lie opportunities for growth, understanding, and an unbreakable bond. https://www.mindfullyaliveonline.com/obsessive-compulsive-disorder-ocd/

Venerable Ajahn Chah was a Thai Buddhist teacher of the Buddhadhamma and a founder of two major monasteries in the Thai Forest Tradition. Well respected and loved as a man of great wisdom, he was also instrumental in establishing Theravada Buddhism in the West. Interesting life story, how he chose to leave the settled monastic life and became a wandering ascetic. Walking across Thailand, lived in forests, caves and cremation grounds while learning from the meditation monks of the Forest of various monasteries. He wandered through the countryside in quest of quiet and secluded places for developing meditation. He even lived in tiger and cobra infested jungles, using reflections on death to penetrate to the true meaning of life. After years of wandering, Venerable Ajahn Chah established a monastery where he taught simple, practice-based form of meditation, and attracted a numerous of students including western foreigners. He was one of the greatest Dhamma teachers of the modern era. His wise teachings have continued to guide thousands of people along the path of Dharma. Venerable Ajahn Chah’s teachings of the Thai Forest Tradition gradually spread across all over the world. Several of Ajahn Chah’s Western students have since established monasteries throughout the world. Just in Thailand itself, there are more than 300 branch monasteries in Ajahn Chah’s tradition. Ven erable Ajahn Chah used his ill health as a teaching point, emphasizing that it was a living example of the impermanence of all things and reminded people to endeavour to find a true refuge within themselves. The legacy of Venerable Ajahn Chah’s teachings and legacy continues into the modern age.
Thank you Rinpoche for this great sharing.

Wonderful blog written on the practice of Kalarupa for us to understand better. As an emanation of Manjushri, Kalarupa’s practice helps us to destroy ignorance and to develop wisdom overcoming our anger and suffering . Awesome Kalarupa manifested in multiple forms to help sentient beings who personifies enlightenment by the conquest of anger. Kalarupa also regard as one of the three main Dharma protectors of the Gelugpa is extremely fierce and ugly, and tames all kinds of spiritual ugliness. The fierceness of his iconography teaches us to remind ourselves that all the causes and effects of anger arising from ignorance are dreadful and distorted.
Thank you Rinpoche and Pastor Antionette for this detailed sharing,

Nepal is a very spiritual country, having a huge Dorje Shugden mural in Kathmandu, is indeed a big achievement for Kechara. Located on Charkhal Road in Dilli Bazaar, the mural can be found midway between our two Dorje Shugden chapels which are in Putalisadak and Chabahil. It is also very close to one of Kathmandu’s largest shopping malls. Many locals , tourist will be able to connect them to a powerful deity that is so closely associated with their culture. Well the mural not only beautiful but also full of symbolism and everyone merely by seeing it is blessed. Thanks to those talented artists and generous sponsors making it a success.
Thank you Rinpoche for this sharing.

All the art of living lies in a fine mingling of letting go and holding on. Letting go helps us to live in a more peaceful state of mind and helps restore our balance. A reminder for us all to go of attachment and meditating on impermanence and emptiness. We are to relinquish the domination of our ego and its habits to transform ourselves. A great reminder not to waste our previous life.
Quoted Ceasing to do evil, Cultivating the good, Purifying the heart .
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing such a meaningful teachings with folded hands.

Winning the lottery was part of my dreams, I tried so hard to win big but all to no avail, until I came across Dr Lucas online who made my dreams come through and made me win 10 million dollars. I was a logistics manager who lives in Lancaster, S.C. and works about an hour’s drive away, in Charlotte, N.C., I stopped at a store to buy a scratch-off lottery ticket during my lunch break, because Dr Lucas gave me all the assurance that the numbers are not going to fail after I did all he asked me to do. Dr lucas is a powerful Dr that is on a mission to eradicate poverty from people’s lives and i have confirmed that by winning $10 million with the numbers he provided for me, it is my promise to tell the world about my experience with Dr Lucas and that’s what I’m doing now, you can win the lottery fast with the help of Dr Lucas he is tested and trusted Email: Drlucasspelltemple@gmail. com or WhatsApp +234 904 794 3567 he will help you.

We are members of the Buddhist Temple in Taman Desa Jaya, Kepong, Kuala Lumpur and we have been issued membership by the president (DATUK YIP KUM FOOK), we are very sad because we are the foundation of this Temple

Now we can know who is always messing with people, and he always cheats money and women, he even uses Buddhism to find money.

Also, need to be careful with his brother-in-law (Simon Low Kok Meng) because he is a spy (CID) for DATUK YIP KUM FOOK and we will write some letters to AGONG SULTAN IBRAHIM IBN ALMARHUM SULTAN ISKANDAR as soon as possible.

The matriarchal cultures of the grandmothers have specific symbolism of animism shamanism, such as the horse, especially the blue horse, and the deer. These are two main symbols of a shaman woman and you can find them in many cultural folk lore, especially the Russian, Slavic, Siberian, Nordic, Finland, and Norway. It’s nice to see the Matriarchal Shaman Animism diety represented in Chinese.

An inspiring act of a selfless Lama feeding strays whether its night or day. Truly an example for us all to feed those lonely strays . Yes I do agree compassion starts with feeding strays. Reading this blog again to refresh myself to do more. Strays animals generally lead a life of poor welfare on the street. Feeding strays is a compassionate act.
Thank you Rinpoche and Anila for this sharing.

The Unknown

The Known and unknown are both feared,
Known is being comfortable and stagnant,
The unknown may be growth and opportunities,
One shall never know if one fears the unknown more than the known.
Who says the unknown would be worse than the known?
But then again, the unknown is sometimes worse than the known. In the end nothing is known unless we endeavour,
So go pursue all the way with the unknown,
because all unknown with familiarity becomes the known.
~Tsem Rinpoche

What the meat industry figured out is that you don't need healthy animals to make a profit.
Sick animals are more profitable... farms calculate how close to death they can keep animals without killing them. That's the business model. How quickly they can be made to grow, how tightly they can be packed, how much or how little can they eat, how sick they can get without dying... We live in a world in which it's conventional to treat an animal like a block of wood. ~ Jonathan Safran Foer

One the day of Losar (new lunar year), it is always beneficial for Buddhist practitioners to get together in making abundant offerings to Buddhas on the altar to usher in goodness, prosperity and well-being of our loved ones. Umze for the day was Siew Hong. She's just been with us for slightly more than a year now but she's proven her capability in leading the puja. Our Penang group members are so proud of her and her commitment in attending the weekly puja. Despite being eloquence and smart, she has beautiful chant as well. When she leads, make sure you are there to hear her chant for yourself! Kechara Penang Study Group by Jacinta.

Dharma sharing by Hue before we proceeded with DS puja & Rinpoche Swift Return puja. Hue is one of the long time Kechara Penang members and he comes to puja regularly. He shared that he truly believes that Dorje Shugden and Rinpoche always there guiding him. He shared how sometimes DS will give him hints to avert troubles ahead or to alert him when he 'misbehaved'. Hope many will come to know more about this powerful Dharma Protector, Dorje Shugden aka DS. Having Dorje Shugden is like having a powerful ally that will protect us day and night. Just trust Him and have faith. Kechara Penang Study Group, 25/11/2023 by Jacinta.
