Good day to you, I hope this email finds you well!

I took my refuge vows online with HE Garchen Rinpoche. I do not live near a Center, my practice is done at home and I listen to teachings online. There is a Drikung Center near where my fiance and I are getting married and I would like to visit the Center while I am in that area. This will be my first time visiting a Center. I am nervous but excited for I feel a sense of home in the Dharma.
Can you offer me the proper etiquette when visiting a Center? Would I offer my khatak? I would like to make an offering to the Center in celebration of our nuptials. Is this appropriate? Could you kindly offer me advice on what type of offerings would be proper? I also, would like to make a 5 sensory offering to Buddha while I am there.

Dear Terri,

I’m glad you will be able to visit the centre. On arriving at the centre you should offer a khata to any members of the sangha you come across. If there is a lama present at the centre and you have the fortunate to meet him, then you should also offer a khata to the lama too. In the main prayer hall of the centre should be the throne of the lama, you should offer prostrations to the throne and also offer a khata to the throne.

In regards to make offerings, of course! You can make traditional offerings, which is a Buddha image, Dharma text and Stupa. If you do not have these things, then any other form of offerings is perfectly acceptable too: fruits, incense, packaged food that is vegetarian, flowers. You can also make a monetary offering to help with the upkeep of the centre, etc. They more offerings you can make to either the centre, the sangha there or on the altar, the better for you and your fiancé. 2. In regards to animals that are invasive, as Buddhism is a religion with non-violence at its core, we must try our best to solve the issue using means to repel the insects rather than to kill them. These days there are many different natural products that are readily available that can do the job. If you cannot find natural repellents then chemical repellants are okay as long as they do not kill the insects or are harmful to other animals.

In the case of animals that cause sickness for example, we need to get rid of them but as non-violently as possible. For example, if a mosquito lands on your arm, our natural instinct is to slap our arm and kill the mosquito. However, if you are mindful of being non-violent, instead of killing it, you would try to blow it off your arm for example.

There are other types of bugs that can infect our body or the body of animals and can cause serious harm. In those case, you will need to seek proper medical treatment, which will obviously kill that particular bug. When this happens, it is unavoidable as they can cause severe problems. If you have no choice but to engage in medical treatment which kills the bugs, then you should dedicate the merits from your daily sadhana practice so that it takes a fortunate rebirth. Unfortunately, the nature of samsara is sufferings, that means no matter how hard we try, some animals/insects will die. However, as part of our own spiritual transformation we should always strive our hardest to practice non-violence. I hope this helps answer your question.

May I know where to get kusha grass?(it says from new broom?) and in the eight sensory offering do I need a tiny torma as the food offering or I can put something else? and do the mandala set have to be on the altar all the time during the retreat? because I only have one mandala set. Thanks for your question. It’s fantastic that you would like to engage in a Lama Tsongkhapa retreat. In Asia, traditional brooms are made from long pieces of dried grass. This type of broom is actually Kusha Grass, so you can buy a new broom, and but some pieces of the grass from it to use for your retreat swastika.

For the sensory offerings, you do not need to use the little tiny torma for the food offering. You can use any sort of vegetarian food as the offering, some people like to use a fruit (like an apple or orange), other put packed biscuits, or even some nicely wrapped chocolates. Any food really, that is well packaged and won’t go bad when on the altar.

For the mandala set, yes you can keep it on the altar if you only have one. When you get the to mandala section of the prayers, use the mandala mudra rather than the physical mandala set. I hope these answers help and I wish you all the best for your successful retreat. Thank you.

If you wish to make a connection with Lord Yamantaka, you can keep either the Solitary Hero form or the form with the consort. Both are Yamantaka, so having the image on your altar, making offerings daily and making strong aspirational prayers to have a strong connection with him, will be very, very beneficial. You can choose whichever image you prefer or have more of a connection with. I hope this helps.

In the Five Precepts, it says refrain from harm, do not take a life/do not kill.
If you have a sick pet, and the vets advises to Euthanize the pet due to failing health conditions.
Is this breaking the precept?

Thank you for your question. I’m sure other pet owners would also have the same question. In short, the answer is that yes, even euthanising a pet due to failing health conditions would break the no killing precept if you have taken the Five Lay Precepts. The precept not to kill covers all sentient beings, including humans and all animals as well. I hope this answers your question. Thank you.

I can see how my mind is being terrible to others only after the incident has occurred and sometimes just after the thoughts have displayed itself. I do believe these are because of the sadhanas I do upon advice from Rinpoche’s blog. However I am not capable yet to transform the terrible reactions or stop it altogether! I wish to transform it totally as Rinpoche taught.

Dear See,

Thank you for your message. You’ve said that you are doing sadhanas, which is very good. The key to success in any sadhana is actually consistency. This means doing it daily, together with offerings on your altar, etc. It’s best not to do too many sadhanas, but stick to 1 or 2 practices and do it consistently. Only then we will see the benefits of doing sadhana correctly. For example, a great daily sadhana advised by Tsem Rinpoche is the Diamond Path, which is the combined practice of Lama Tsongkhapa and Dorje Shugden. Though any of the sadhanas on this website will be beneficial also, especially if you have a specific issue that you need help with dealing with.

The transformation that Tsem Rinpoche speaks about comes from more than just daily sadhana however. It’s about study, contemplation and meditation upon the Dharma and concerted effort to put it in to practice in daily life. Two things I would highly recommend are 1) study and contemplation of the Lamrim and 2) daily meditational practice (other than your sadhana).

1: If the Buddha is already present in the statue, why should we do an invocation prayer?
2: For my Sadhana, I do 2 practices in one. Yidam and protector practice. DO i have to do 2 dedications for the 2 practices, or do I only need to do one dedication that over-arches BOTH practices
3: The NKT organization has insulted HH The 14th Dalai Lama saying that he is a fraud and dictator for banning Dorje Shugden. Is this right, what should one do?

Dear WLY,

The invocation is to draw upon more of the Buddha’s energies in order to effect transformation. We need to constantly call upon the Buddhas to provide their blessings and assistance. You are right that a properly consecrated statue will already have the energies of the Buddha present in it, however that doesn’t mean the energies of the Buddha are present in our lives physically helping us. The purpose of Buddhism is about self-transformation, but this is a process which doesn’t happen overnight. Similarly, prayer in Buddhism is not about asking for this from the divine, rather it is about transformation. So when you can on the Buddha again and again daily during the invocation section of the prayers, you are inviting those enlightened energies again and again to aid you in your self-transformation.

If you are doing two particular practices, for example a yidam practice and a protector practice, you only need to do one dedication to cover both. That is if you are doing both practices in one sitting. If you are doing the practices at different times of the day, then you need to do a dedication at the end of each.

In regards to the views of other Buddhist organisations, here at Kechara, following the views, advice and teachings of His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche, our views are different. We do not believe that the Dalai Lama is a fraud, that would contradict what Tsem Rinpoche taught. The issue is a very complex one and Tsem Rinpoche wrote many articles that try to explain his view. In the Yonten Shigyurma, a section of the prayer says "…,the supreme of vehicles, Vajrayana." does this imply that Vajrayana is the best vehicle?

Dear Anonymous,

Vajrayana is considered the supreme vehicle. This is not in the sense that only Vajrayana can lead you to enlightenment, and other vehicles cannot. It is considered supreme in terms of being able to lead practitioners to enlightenment quicker than others. Even though it is considered supreme, in terms of time taken to achieve enlightenment, it can also be more dangerous, hence needs to be practiced correctly, under a qualified lama, holding all the associated vows and commitments.

Think of it like this. We need to get from point a to point b. There are different ways we can do this, we can walk there for example. Better would be to use a vehicle to help us get there. Let’s take a bicycle and a car. Both will get you to that point. You need to learn how to use a bicycle before it can get to you to point b properly. It takes even more effort to learn how to use and drive a car though, and it’s more dangerous. A car, however, will take you to point b quicker than a bicycle, but there is more effort and danger also involved. So, you need to learn from someone very good at driving a car in order to be able to drive it properly. Vajrayana is like the car, other vehicles are like the bicycle. Both get you to your destination, however one is more faster than the other. I hope this explanation helps. Thank you.

In the Bodhisattva vows, it says to not retaliate in any siyation, even at times of murder. How can this be? I can't defend myself? Wouldn't be good if I fight back, because I prevent the murderer to actually murder someone.

Dear Luna,

Yes, that is correct. In the Bodhisattva vows, it includes not retaliating when we are harmed by others. The vows themselves are based on the development of Bodhicitta, itself is an advanced practice which needs a lot of groundwork, study, contemplation and practice to reach. A core aspect of Bodhicitta, is to take negative experiences we have and actually transform them into experiences which further spiritual progress and not simply create karma, which keeps us bound in Samsara or cyclic existence. This includes retaliating when harmed by others. In regards to this point itself, it is actually common throughout all of Buddhism.

The reason why is that when we retaliate we create negative karma, because the act of retaliation is a negative one. At the same time, it shows that we have not fully understood or comprehended karma yet, because any action that someone does against you, is the result of your own karma from earlier on in this life and countless future lives. If you retaliate, you simple create more karma which you will need to suffer from in the future.

At the core of it though is that wanting or needing to retaliate is due to self-cherishing. That is the core of why we are still in Samsara and not enlightened yet. All Buddhist practice is geared towards reducing self-cherishing and eliminating it completely. This is actually a part of the teachings on emptiness also, which is the key to achieve enlightenment.

Obviously keeping this vow is not easy to do, that is why you need to have studied, contemplated and meditated on many Dharma topics before reaching this stage. This is all explained and outlined in detail within the Lamrim.

This is all in regards to if the person being harmed is ourselves. If someone is harming another person or sentient being, then according to Bodhicitta practice, yes we can and should try to stop them for harming another sentient being. But if we are being harmed, according to this vow, we should not.

Also another point to note, is that this is auxiliary vow related to the perfection of patience. As such, even you do not manage to keep this vow (though you should always try to keep the vow as strong as possible), if you break the vow you can purify the infraction. It is not like the root Bodhisattva vows, which if you break means you have lost all of the Bodhisattva vows. I hope this explanation helps, in order to further your understanding you should study, contemplate and meditate on the Lamrim. It is all explained in a lot more detail than we can manage here. The historical form of Buddha Shakyamuni was a nirmanakaya form. The Sambhogakaya form of Buddha Shakyamuni is exactly like the form we visualise or depict in images or thangkas. I just saw a video on Tsem Rinpoche about that we need an enlightened being can only purify our karma. Does this include beings that are outside of Buddhism? Like the great sages and Gurus of Hinduism or the great Saints in Christianity. My second question is that, could Buddhism all possibly be just a placebo affect? Or does it really happen. Like when we visualise Tsongkhapa going into our heart and we feel better, does Tsongkhapa actually go inside and helps us feel better? Or is it just placebo affect

Thank you for your question. I couldn’t comment on the great sages or saints of other religions, because I do not know much about them and the spiritual levels they reached. But if they reached the state that Buddhists refer to as enlightenment, and so became what we call Buddhas, then yes.

In regards to your second question, no, we do not consider it a placebo effect. The Buddhas are very real, so when we prayer to them and invoke upon their energies, they really do come to bless us. In regards to the dissolution of Lama Tsongkhapa in ourselves during his Guru Yoga, yes he really does enter our hearts. But the strength of that is determined by us, our effort, our spiritual transformation, the merit we have collected through engaging in virtuous actions to generate merit, etc. In essence, it is not just to make us feel better, but actually to bless us with his energy so that we can benefit from it, whether that be healing of the body, calming of the mind, or any benefit associated with his practice. I'm very confused about Tsem Rinpoche's lineage, I heard multiple different lineages that is supposedly Tsem Rinpoche's lineage. I don't know which one is which though, do you have anything that shows his true confirmed and complete lineage? Sometimes I doubt Tsem Rinpoche, right now I'm doubting him a lot, I need some structure and advice I can to affirm my connection with him.

And a shift in my question, I heard being gay breaks the sexual misconduct vow, is this true? And does being trans bad?

Being gay does not break the sexual misconduct vow for lay people. The vow is broken when we harm another person with our actions, whether physically or mentally, this includes being unfaithful. Also, being trans is not bad. No sexuality is right or wrong per se, because no matter how you look at it, it is an expression of attachment. Due to karma being so variable, everyone will have different expression of sexual attachment. I hope this make sense.

Is it permissible to keep statues of deities like sengdongma in the house on one's altar? Not to do any tantric meditation but simply for offering prayers and praise? I've heard that sengdongma shouldn't be kept at the house, so hoping if you can clarify.

Yes, it is actually very good to have the statue of Sengdongma in your house. She is a fully enlightened being, a Buddha. Having a statue of an enlightened being can never be a bad thing. In fact, having a statue of Sengdongma in your home altar, and making offerings daily is a very, very good thing. Some people are a little superstitious about having certain Buddha images in their houses due to their form, being wrathful, etc. But this is not the case at all.

In fact, you should have the statue properly consecrated. This will make the statue even more beneficial. We reincarnate after we die and become children why does our mind become immature?
Like if I die at 70 and my mind is mature, I know a lot of things. After I die, and I'm now a child, why does my knowledge decrease compared to before? Is it because that's judt the nature of human beings?

Thank you for your question. According to Buddhism, we can reincarnate into various realms, from human, animals, gods, etc. The reason why we can forget what happened in previous lives is due to the type of rebirth that you take birth in. Generally humans have no recollection of knowledge, events, etc, from previous lives. This however is only on the gross levels. On a more subtle level these things are not lost however, it’s only that you cannot access those memories or intellectual ability. However there are cases of remembering these things either instinctively or through meditation.

In the other types of rebirth however, you can remember all of these things for example, rebirth in the God realm means you do have knowledge or your previous lives, but due to the form you have taken are under the general delusions of that type of rebirth. I hope this helps. Thank you.

Dear Kevin,

Thank you for your question. It’s entirely up to you, however you should still do the part where Lama Tsongkhapa enters your heart and resides there. That is one of the main parts of the Guru Yoga so you gain blessings from the practice.

However, even if you aspire to go to Sukhavati Pureland, that does not necessarily mean you cannot do the powa section of Lama Tsongkhapa’s practice. In fact, it’s quite the opposite, because it creates a stronger connection with the Buddhas and the Purelands for you to be more likely to get to a Pureland.

Once you are in a Pureland, it doesn’t mean that you can only be in that Pureland. You will be able to travel to other Purelands too, as long as you are born in one. That’s why, even if you wish to be reborn in a certain Pureland, you can also recite the prayers and engage in other practices to reach other Purelands. For example, many Tantric practitioners seek rebirth in Vajra Yogini’s Pureland, but also engage in Lama Tsongkhapa’s Powa as part of his Guru Yoga. The two reinforce each other in reaching a Pureland, it is your determination of which you aspire more to be reborn in that is the key. I hope that makes sense and helps you.

Hi, my sibling wants me to pray for them to help them get into a college. I don't usually pray for worldly things, but in this case, I feel like I need to. It's because they are suffering from mental health problems, and if they don't into that college, there's a big cahnce that their mental health will worsen. How do I go about this?

My second question is interpretations of Shunyata, I heard some people believe that things don't exist at all period, and some believe that things are existent, just empty. Which is the correct interpretation?

Thank you for your questions. For your sibling, you can pray to Dorje Shugden. His practice is very well-known to be effective for things like this. It is worldly as you said, but it its for the benefit of your sibling, so Dorje Shugden can and will help in such situations. In fact, I have personally have found that Dorje Shugden helps a lot in terms of getting jobs, education etc. If you don’t already know about Dorje Shugden, you can find an introduction to his practice here: https://www.tsemrinpoche.com/tsem-tulku-rinpoche/buddhas-dharma/beginners-introduction-to-dorje-shugden.html In addition, we would recommend that your sibling also see a mental health professional as well if they are not already. This will really help them be the best person they can be. We should not rely on only one method but both secular and spiritual methods at the same time. Dorje Shugden’s practice will also help to make the secular methods more successful. If your sibling is willing, then they themselves should engage in Dorje Shugden’s practice. That would be best.

In regards to Shunyata, as we belong to the Gelug tradition, we have a view of known as the Two Truths, that is there is an Absolute Truth (that everything lacks inherent existence) and a Relative Truth (that things exist on the conventional level). This is a little difficult to explain fully here in such a short space. You can read the Lamrim in regards to this, but it is quite complicated. In essence, on a conventional level things exist, but on the ultimate level they don’t exist, in that they do not have inherent existence. I hope this helps.

Pastor Chia (sangha to be)

As a pastor, Chia will dedicate his life to befitting others through spreading the works of Tsem Rinpoche and Dharma to many people, through the use of pujas, rituals, counseling and sharing of his knowledge.

Ordained as a Pastor in 2011, Chia Song Peng has had a rich and varied Dharma career. He has held a core position with the Kechara Paradise retail outlets, served as a personal attendant to Tsem Rinpoche, embarked on various pilgrimages and received initiations into higher yoga tantric practices. He is accomplished in many pujas and has a deep understanding of the Dharma.

As a pastor, Chia has dedicated his life to befitting others through spreading the works of Tsem Rinpoche and Dharma to many people, through the use of pujas, rituals, counseling and sharing of his knowledge.

When Chia first met Tsem Rinpoche, he was asked if he wanted to become a monk, however even though this was his aspiration he informed Tsem Rinpoche that he would do so at a later date. For Chia, as he has is already in the Dharma full-time, it would be best if he became ordained. Tsem Rinpoche has reminded Chia from time to time to work towards becoming a monk and he promised that he would do so in the future.

Kechara began from nothing to become a growing Dharma organisation with major projects such as Kechara Forest Retreat, so Chia thinks that this is the perfect time to become ordained as a monk. Recently Tsem Rinpoche asked Chia again if he would like to be ordained, this time Chia said yes.

Pastor Khong Jean Ai (sangha to be)

Jean Ai wishes to become a vessel that holds the teachings of Lama Tsongkhapa to benefit future generations, inspiring others to live by the Buddha’s teachings.

Jean Ai met His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche as a young child and through her parents' involvement with Kechara over the years, she has never known a life without His Eminence. Jean Ai was a regular volunteer of Tsem Ladrang during her childhood and teenage years. After graduating with a BSc (Hons) in Psychology from the University of Warwick in the UK and working at the London Probation Service, she returned to Kuala Lumpur to join Tsem Ladrang's e-division. There she managed kechara.com, responsible for the weekly Kechara e-newsletter, including content generation and editing. Since then she has joined His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche’s writing team, responsible for executing Rinpoche’s personal instructions and managing his correspondence.

Having visited a nunnery in India in 2004, Jean Ai remembers noticing how happy and purposeful everyone was. She had a feeling of familiarity and the sight of the robes comforted her. Immediately, Jean Ai messaged her mother who told her to ask Rinpoche’s advice. Rinpoche told her to complete her secular education so that when she taught the Dharma her words would carry the credibility and weight of a university degree, something she completed with the motivation that some day she wanted to become a nun.

Through her ordination as a nun, Jean Ai wishes to become a vessel that holds the teachings of Lama Tsongkhapa to benefit future generations, inspiring others to live by the Buddha’s teachings. Through this she hopes to repay the kindness of her parents and her Guru. Above all she wants to abide in a state free of suffering, and she wants this for others as well.

Pastor Shin Tan (sangha to be)

For Shin, this is a great step forward to being fully committed to the cause of others and repaying others’ kindness through sharing the Dharma with others.

Before joining Kechara, Shin worked as a lecturer and provider of content and e-learning content solutions for various start-ups. Whilst providing training to educators teaching students in English for Specific Purposes (ESP) at various colleges, she was invited to attend a Dharma talk given by His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche at Kechara House. This event rekindled her interest in Tibetan Buddhism, as she recalled the joy of accompanying her parents to teachings as a teenager.

Joining Kechara Media & Publications in 2006 as a volunteer, Shin assumed a full time position there as a Marketing Executive, with the aim of making His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche’s teachings available to more people around the world. Shin is now a member of the Tsem Ladrang Team, who takes care of His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche’s secular matters, enabling Rinpoche to focus on teaching the holy Dharma.

Shin states that when she decided to join Kechara full time, she had already decided to be of some benefit to others and spend the rest of her life doing only that. Working closely with His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche, seeing his tireless effort in helping others and spreading the Buddhadharma through the Gaden tradition despite tremendous challenges has made her realise that the next logical step is to become ordained as she has the opportune conditions to study with her Guru. For Shin this is also a great step forward to being fully committed to the cause of others and repaying others’ kindness through sharing the Dharma with others.

Pastor Adeline Woon (sangha to be)

Since finding her spiritual home here in Kechara, Adeline has made dharma work her life’s mission and wishes to dedicate herself fully towards the benefit of others.

Adeline stumbled across His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche's blog towards the end of 2010 and has been following his blog and Facebook page ever since. Since graduating from Dharma Drum Buddhist College Taiwan with a Masters of Arts in Religious Studies in July 2012, she returned to Malaysia and joined Kechara as a Senior Education Executive. Adeline was attracted by His Eminence’s straightforwardness and impressed at Kechara's growth under his guidance. To Adeline, His Eminence is someone who walks the talk, keeps his promises and sincerely cares for others displaying an excellent example of guru devotion, qualities that she seeks to develop herself.

Since finding her spiritual home here in Kechara, Adeline has made dharma work her life’s mission. It was in May 2013 that she officially requested His Eminence for ordination as a nun to dedicate her life fully for the dharma. According to Adeline, become ordained means that she is being true to her calling to live according to the dharma and be of benefit to others.

This however can only be achieved by meeting and studying under her root Guru. Adeline has been fortunate enough to have met with hers - His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche.

Pastor Niral Patel (sangha to be)

It is Niral’s motivation for full ordination to better himself, learn the teachings of our lineage in order to preserve them for future generations. He wishes to benefit others, just as he has benefited and is still benefiting from Tsem Rinpoche’s explanation of the Dharma.

Niral was born and raised in the UK, having graduated with a BA in Anthropology, he was working as a Financial Administrator for a Serviced Apartment & Hotel company as well as a Management Services company before stumbling across His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche’s Youtube channel, entirelyby accident. It was through His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche’s teachings that he began to understand the importance of practicing the Dharma, in order to benefit himself and others around him.

Having been in contact with one of Tsem Rinpoche’s long time students in the UK, he was encouraged to visit Kechara in late 2012 for a 10 day visit. At the end of the visit Tsem Rinpoche requested Niral to come to work at Kechara, to which he agreed.

Niral moved to Malaysia in February 2013 to work as an education coordinator at Kechara House, assisting the Education Division in the creation and implementation of the new education syllabus, teaching teenagers during the Kechara Sunday Dharma School. Ever since meeting Tsem Rinpoche, he has always been encouraged by Tsem Rinpoche to do more Dharma work and strive to better himself. It is with that in mind, that Niral has requested monastic ordination.

Pastor Tan Gim Lee (sangha to be)

Gim Lee’s main focus is to guide and help anyone who steps through Kechara’s doors through Dharma sharing, counselling, performing pujas and other Buddhist services. She wishes to repay Rinpoche’s kindness by spreading Lama Tsongkhapa’s holy teachings and inspiring others on the spiritual path.

She discovered Kechara by chance in 2006 and started to participate Kechara's activities almost immediately especially the retreat to collect 10 million Migtsema recitations. In April 2006, when Gim Lee met H.E. Tsem Rinpoche and first listened to his teachings, she wept uncontrollably. Though she could not understand it at the time, she had finally found her perfect teacher. She is especially touched by Tsem Rinpoche's compassionate method of teaching by setting his own examples.

Having joined as a staff of Kechara House responsible for housekeeping in 2009, Gim Lee is now one of Kechara House's Front Desk Managers predominantly based in the retreat centre in Bentong, Pahang. She also teaches the Sunday Dharma Class and moderates Dharma discussions on Tsem Rinpoche's blog chat.

The many teachings she has received from Tsem Rinpoche have changed her priorities in life. She found answers to her questions about the purpose of life, and she has realised that the way to overcome the sufferings of pain and anger is by following the path of compassion and wisdom as taught by Lord Buddha. These realisations have led to her request to be ordained as a Sangha member.

As pastor now, and later as a Buddhist nun, Gim Lee's main focus is to guide and help anyone who steps through Kechara's doors through Dharma sharing, counselling, performing pujas and other Buddhist services. She wishes to repay Rinpoche's kindness by spreading Lama Tsongkhapa's holy teachings and inspiring others on the spiritual path.

Pastor Loh Seng Piow (sangha to be)

Loh Seng Piow developed a strong wish to help Rinpoche in spreading the Dharma to the world. With that determination, Loh Seng Piow chose not to pursue his PhD degree in Cambridge University (for which he had been offered a place), resigned from his research job, and joined Tsem Rinpoche as full-time Dharma worker, and has never looked back since.

Back in 2001, Loh Seng Piow had no inkling of just how involved in Dharma he would become. As a Masters degree-holder in Engineering, Loh Seng Piow was working as a research engineer in Singapore when he met His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche. Rinpoche’s talk left a strong impression on him and after a few encounters with Rinpoche, Loh Seng Piow started developing websites for Rinpoche and Kechara.

Loh Seng Piow was trained in science, but soon realised that there were many questions that science could not answer. At the same time, he also felt that science and technology are not the solution to human problems, as humans are much better off compared to thousands years ago, yet the problems in this world are still the same, if not more, and we do not seem to be happier than our ancestors.

Loh Seng Piow soon realised that the Dharma is the ultimate solution to human problems, and that the methods used by His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche are very suitable for this modern era. Loh Seng Piow developed a strong wish to help Rinpoche in spreading the Dharma to the world. With that determination, Loh Seng Piow chose not to pursue his PhD degree in Cambridge University (for which he had been offered a place), resigned from his research job, and joined Tsem Rinpoche as full-time Dharma worker, and has never looked back since.

Meeting Rinpoche was a very refreshing experience for Loh Seng Piow, as he never knew Dharma could be so unconventional yet maintain its essence. As Rinpoche’s personal attendant, Loh Seng Piow has had many incredible moments with Rinpoche and considers himself extremely fortunate because he sees real Dharma in action, both on and off the throne. It challenges him to practice Dharma 24/7. In this way, Rinpoche has blown away his old and persistent way of thinking, which was very much focused on the outer rituals of Dharma.

Having seen that Tsem Rinpoche truly embodies what he teaches, Loh Seng Piow is convinced beyond doubt that it is possible to develop our minds to a higher state, and ultimately achieving enlightenment. All these factors have propelled Loh Seng Piow to take a step further in his Dharma career to become ordained as a pastor in order to be even more effective in sharing and disseminating the Dharma to benefit others.

Pastor Yek Yee

Naturally an introvert, Yek Yee has transformed what was once her weakness into her strength; making what was once impossible now eminently possible.

Independence was forced upon Kok Yek Yee from the tender age of nine, when she had to juggle between work and school to make ends meet. Always the introvert, Yek Yee had few friends and had difficulty expressing herself. So it was unexpected when she chose a career in journalism.

Yek Yee excelled as an award-winning reporter with Guang Ming Daily and Nanyang Siang Pau. Her articles garnered her a fanbase, and in writing, she found an outlet for the thoughts and feelings that she could not verbalise. However, despite her success, Yek Yee was not satisfied. Temporary happiness was not what she was looking for – success, money, relationships, or fame was not the key.

In her search for happiness, Yek Yee met H.E. Tsem Tulku Rinpoche, who told her “don’t retaliate with your speech, but use your power of writing to express yourself”. This led her to join Kechara Media & Publications as a writer; subsequently she was appointed Senior Editor as well as a Liaison to His Eminence.

Yek Yee now holds a core role in Kechara Care, giving advice, tours, counseling and teachings to whoever walks through their doors. Through courage and determination, she has transformed what was once her weakness into her strength; making what was once impossible now eminently possible.

As a Pastor, her patience and open-mindedness developed through her journey with Kechara will bring comfort and solace, and her new-found ability to nurture and teach others will bring hope to many.

Pastor Lanse Chiah

Having been a Pastor for a year, Lanse wishes to continue with her integral duties by renewing her vows again.

Lanse graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) from Jinan University in Guangzhou, China in 1999 and became a part-time lecturer for several years, teaching western medicine in a Traditional Chinese medical college in Kuala Lumpur.

For a long time, Lanse remained an atheist, subconsciously searching for a spiritual guru as she sought answers to questions she harboured in her mind, questions that had led her into a state of depression during her time at university. As such, she would often read philosophical books in her search for answers.

Lanse first came to know of Kechara in 2007, through her friend of over 10 years, Pastor Yek Yee. She was surprised to see a complete transformation in Pastor Yek Yee, whom she had always known as a non-spiritual person. The first book by Kechara that Lanse chanced upon was the Chinese version of Be Greedy. Naturally, Lanse was skeptical at first, thus she read the book in an attempt to find mistakes with the philosophy. However, she couldn’t find any and was left impressed by how logical the explanations in the book were.

In March 2009, Lanse joined Kechara Media & Publications (KMP) part-time to carry out Chinese translation and help with transcription. The following year, she contemplated upon whether to pursue a full-time medical or a Dharma career, finally deciding on the latter. Lanse came to realise that, although both careers share the same motivation of easing people’s sufferings, she felt that her work in Dharma could lead to a greater contribution for the sake of all sentient beings in a deeper, spiritual sense.

Having been a Pastor for a year, Lanse wishes to continue with her integral duties by renewing her vows again.

Pastor Han Nee

It was not until she witnessed how Rinpoche brought peace and comfort to her dying mother, that she realised she also wanted to touch others with the Dharma.

Lim Han Nee, a mother of two, is a retired secondary school principal. She retired in December 2000 after a 30-year career in education. She obtained her Master’s Degree in Education at Leicester University in the UK, at the end of 2001.

After gaining her master’s degree, Han Nee considered further options of embarking on a doctorate in education or spending her years in retirement, travelling and visiting family. At the same time, she was also in search of her spiritual path. She had begun exploring Theravadan and Chinese Mahayana Buddhism for answers to questions she had.

In December 2004, Han Nee attended a teaching retreat on the topic of the Lamrim and White Tara held by His Eminence Gelek Rinpoche. As the retreat proceeded, she found her questions were being answered. Then in June 2005, Han Nee was introduced to Kechara by her sister, where she met her spiritual guide, His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche, who has recently told her that she must go all the way in the Dharma for the benefit of others.

Han Nee had been a school guidance counsellor for nearly twenty years. However, it was not until she witnessed how Rinpoche brought peace and comfort to her dying mother, that she realised she also wanted to touch others with the Dharma.

A member of Kechara’s Puja Team, who conduct sponsored pujas in Shabten Khang, Han Nee is also a member of the Education Division with the portfolio of Content Development. Apart from this, Han Nee is also a member of the weekly Kechara Chat Time team.

Pastor David Lai

In 2014, with a sincere wish to benefit others, David decided to be ordained as a Buddhist pastor to continue serving the spiritual needs of the organisation.

David Lai has been a student of His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche for over a decade now and was one of the founding members of Kechara. He joined Kechara as a full time staff in 2005 and has been working in various departments beginning with the Kechara Paradise outlets.

Right from the beginning, David had been advised by His Eminence to go into writing. Overcoming various hurdles, David finally began his literary career with the publication of his first book and autobiography, There’s No Way But Up in 2009. The book charts his spiritual journey from his childhood and culminates in the meeting with His Eminence.

The positive feedback from this book led him to write various other publications like Vajrayogini and Other Power Places in Nepal – a pilgrim’s guide of Nepal, Tales My Lama Told Me – a book on short stories and Conversations in Love – a book on relationships. These books continue to inspire and bring people onto the Dharma.

Besides writing, David has found his passion in sharing the Dharma since his earlier days working in the Kechara Paradise outlets. Over the years, David has received innumerable teachings from His Eminence, ranging from public teachings to personal instructions and advice. He is known to passionately share these teachings whenever he can and to whomever he meets. In 2014, with a sincere wish to benefit others, David decided to be ordained as a Buddhist pastor to continue serving the spiritual needs of the organisation.

Pastor Henry Ooi

Born in 1952 in Penang, Henry moved to Kuala Lumpur in search of work after he finished his Form Five studies in 1969. He worked at different types of jobs and it was when he was jobless in 1997/8 that he met His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche at the house of his cousin, Ruby (now Dato’ Ruby Khong), when Rinpoche was giving a dharma teaching. At that teaching Henry was awed by how Rinpoche taught Dharma with simple yet profound explanations.

With the kind guidance, teachings and Dharma practices by Rinpoche including instruction to engage in their first spiritual retreat, Henry and his wife Angel started a small business that soon became profitable. A few years later after Kechara House Buddhist Association was founded, Rinpoche started to enrol students as liaisons and that was when Henry and Dato’ Ruby offered themselves. Later more students were elected as liaisons that saw the birth of Liaisons Council. The Liaisons Council is now known as the Board of Directors of which Henry is one of its members.

Currently Henry is the Project Director, overseeing the construction and completion of projects in the Kechara Forest Retreat. Prior to this appointment he was the Head of Department in Kechara Paradise retail outlets of which he served for about ten years. He still remains as its company director as well as director for most of the companies within Kechara. He served one term as vice president of Kechara House Buddhist Association from 2012 to 2103.

After following Rinpoche as a Dharma student for all these years, learning and practicing the Dharma, Henry knows the importance of the pastors’ role in Kechara founded by Rinpoche. He wants to become a pastor to serve Rinpoche, to serve Kechara, and to serve the public. As he aspires to be a monk as he grows older, being a pastor of Kechara will pave the way for his aspiration. Henry believes that as one gets older in life, one should have already prepared for the imminent, death. And what a beautiful death it will be, to die in Kechara Forest Retreat in a monk’s robes. This is the kind of death that Henry wants. But before the imminent death happens, Henry wants to continue working in Kechara Forest Retreat, serving the community and whoever comes into it in whatever way he can. And when he is not physically anymore to serve others, he will request instructions from Rinpoche to enter into retreats in Kechara Forest Retreat.

Pastor Patsy Gooi

All that Patsy wants now is to spend the rest of her life doing dharma work, dharma practices and being of benefit to others.

Formerly a full time housewife with plenty of free time, Patsy had the great fortune to visit Gaden Monastery and meet H.E. Tsem Rinpoche almost twenty years ago. That one week stay in the monastery changed her view of life. Prior to that, she had no spiritual inclinations but meeting Rinpoche stirred something inside her, and she realised that there was more to life than just eating, sleeping, shopping and having fun. Rinpoche’s approach to dharma was logical and practical but most importantly, he stressed that we should always focus out and work towards benefitting others. Rinpoche made dharma easy to understand and his advice was and still is, to “change inwardly, not outwardly.”

In 2009, after years of practicing and applying what she had learned from Rinpoche’s teachings, Patsy decided to set up a Kechara retail outlet in Penang to share the dharma with others. She knew that Rinpoche’s teachings were very applicable to the people of our time and that his activities would benefit others just as they had benefited her. She also wanted to repay the kindness of her Guru who had constantly helped and guided her. Today, Kechara Paradise Penang is not just a dharma shop but also organises puja sessions, animal liberation and dharma talks.

In 2010, again with Rinpoche’s blessings, Patsy set up the Kechara Soup Kitchen Activity Center in Penang. Saddened to see the plight of the homeless and urban poor on the streets, Patsy decided to practice “compassion through action” as taught by Rinpoche in the most active way she knows. Today, together with her team of volunteers, Patsy feeds the homeless and urban poor four times a week and provides basic food provisions to many hardcore poor families on a monthly basis.

All that Patsy wants now is to spend the rest of her life doing dharma work and dharma practices, and that she may be of benefit to others.

Pastor Albert Ratchaga

In 2008, Albert Ratchaga began working as a part timer in Kechara Paradise, but as he learned more about the works of Rinpoche and Kechara, Rinpoche’s kindness and compassion touched him deeply. He realised that his work gave his life more meaning and decided to join Kechara full time.

Through his work as a sales executive, Albert was able learn more Dharma from Rinpoche's teachings and use this wisdom to assist those who entered his store to overcome their problems, thus improving their lives.

Albert soon developed a deep wish to follow in Rinpoche’s footsteps and in 2016 was ordained as a Pastor to continue benefitting and serving others.

Revisited this blog again as the prayers by HH Dalai Lama to Dorje Sgugden is powerful and beautiful to read. It was at Dungkar Monastery in Tibet that Dalai Lama composed the prayers. He was impressed by witnessing the trance of Dorje Shugden which inspired him to compose the prayer. This prayers is still been in use up to this day. We are so fortunate to have this prayers been translated into English for us. Dorje Shugden is an enlightened Dharma Protector who manifested about 400 years ago from a lineage of erudite masters. It cannot be wrong .It was Dorje Shugden oracle that has helped HH 14 th Dalai Lama easy route to escape back in 1959.

Back in 3nd January 2020 H H Dalai Lama was at Bodhgaya ,India, delivered his advice and teachings to thousands of lay people, monks and nuns from over 70 countries. In his speech, H H Dalai Lama mentioned that people can Practise Dorje Shugden if they wish to under some circumstances. As times goes by things change and heal naturally , so as the banning of Dorje Sgugden’s practice. Happy that Dalai Lama spoke this openly in his speech. Finally we could practice now . May peace and harmony be restore.

Simple yet beautiful shrine of Rinpoche with lots of offerings . Fortunate for us able to see Rinpoche shrine which set an example and motivate to do more. When we make an offering, we are actively practicing generosity, mindfulness, and non-attachment. By doing so it helps us to purify the mind of greed, selfishness, and pride. Depending on the tradition, all these offerings are usually dedicated to the Triple Gem and all sentient beings. Whatever offerings on the altar carry deep symbolic meanings. Offering is a practice where one, with a devout heart, sincerely pays respect and expresses gratitude to deities. Very helpful videos in this blog for us to learn and understanding better.

Hong Kong is the world’s third-ranked global financial centre famous for being a dynamic global financial powerhouse. Still haven’t got a chance to visit this awesome place. I would like to see for myself the big Buddha Statue or also known as Tian Tan Buddha as Rinpoche and group had visited years back. The Tian Tan Buddha combines a massive, record-breaking monumental size with deep spiritual meaning. Located atop scenic mountain on Lantau Island, where the site provides panoramic views surrounded by green lush mountains and the sea. A place worth visiting for its mix of iconic cultural sites and scenic nature with a monastery nearby. Looking at those beautiful pictures says all. It has attracted many tourist and pilgrims yearly.

Watching ghost movies is simply a form of entertainment which I do enjoy most. Frightening scenes activate our sympathetic nervous system such as increasing adrenaline, heart rate, and alertness. I do believe the existence of ghosts or spirits. Its scary for some but not me anymore since learning and practicing Dharma . Many do believe in spirits and an afterlife, often rooted in ancient customs or religion. They always feel connected to deceased loved ones. Many people report seeing or feeling spirits during times of high stress, grief, or unfamiliar environments and at times in their dreams as well. Ghost are unseen beings trapped in a realm of intense sufferings due to past greed, strong attachment, and negative karma as Buddha had explained before. Learning and practicing Dharma is the best choice as the feeling of fear disappeared. And having Powerful Protector pendants will protect us from harm.

Kathmandu is the capital and largest city of Nepal. Kathmandu is a cultural centre of Nepal with many rich ancient architecture, sacred temples, and is the gateway to the Himalayas mountains for trekkers and climbers. Its was there that our Guru H E Tsem Rinpoche had no way to put a night stopped Phelgyeling Monastery where he met a kind monk. Rinpoche was given shelter and food. Nyanang Phelgye Ling Monastery is a Tibetan Buddhist monastic center located at Swayambhu Stupa in Kathmandu. Rinpoche never forgot this monk’s kindness that back in 2018 sent students to Kathmandu, Nepal to meet this kind monk Gelong Tamdrin. They had the opportunity to have an audience with Gelong Tamdrin, the kind monk.

My Dharma boy (left) and Oser girl loves to laze around on the veranda in the mornings. They enjoy all the trees, grass and relaxing under the hot sun. Sunbathing is a favorite daily activity. Find one of the most beautiful temples in the world in Nara, Japan. It is the 1,267 year old Todai-ji temple that houses a 15 meter Buddha Vairocana statue who is a cosmic and timeless Buddha. Emperor Shomu who sponsored this beautiful temple eventually abdicated and ordained as a Buddhist monk. Very interesting history and story.
