Question asked by Ming

Can we mix Han style vajrayana and tibetian vajrayana

  1. Reply by pastor

    Dear Ming,

Thank you for your question. Traditionally it is advised that we do not mix traditions or even lineages. There is a very valid reason for this, if we mix traditions or lineages then we are in the danger of becoming confused in our practice. This occurs because each lineage or tradition explains the path of practice in different ways, suited to the practitioners of that particular tradition. For example, think of both as separate paths to the same destination. It would be better that we follow one and get to our destination, rather than keep switching between the two paths and perhaps get lost or take a very long time to reach the destination. Both paths have been tried and tested in their efficiency to achieve enlightenment.

This is not to say that there is only one correct lineage, on the contrary, it is said that Buddha Shakyamuni taught 84,000 different methods to achieve enlightenment, as such both the Han style Vajrayana and Tibetan Vajrayana are both valid paths to enlightenment. However if we practice one of these methods and achieve results which is enlightened attainments it is better and more effective than practicing two or more and run the risk of confusing ourselves or our practices. I hope this helps.

Question asked by Lee

I have given up mantra chanting. Why is it that I always get negative results after I chant mantras ? Are Buddhas not here to help us when they listen to our cries for help? However I still do virtuous deeds, speech and thoughts because I believe in karma and what we do will come back to us in future. It's just that my belief in the Buddhas is not so strong as before. Any suggestions why this is happening to me ?

  1. Reply by pastor

    Dear Lee,

I am sorry to hear that you have been going through tough times. When we experience difficulties in our life, it is due to our negative karma manifesting. This karma is immeasurable, having been accumulated over many countless lifetimes, and we experience the obstacles because a set of conditions has triggered this negative karma. Sometimes when reciting mantras, negative karma can open up, as mantras are effective in purifying negative karma. When our negative karma manifests however and we experience difficulties, instead of being frustrated or upset, the high lamas teach us to rejoice that this karma is manifesting and therefore we never have to experience it again. What’s more, this negative karma manifests while we are under the protection of our Guru and the Three Jewels, so we do not experience it as severely as we otherwise might have.

For example, if we have the karma to meet with a fatal car accident, perhaps we do get into a car accident. But thanks to the merit accumulated from our mantra recitation (which connects us to the protection of, for example Dorje Shugden), we only walk away with a few cuts and bruises, but we do not die. The karma was there and had to be purified; we would have to experience it in some way and at some point but what is worse, to experience the karma as a minor car accident in this life, or to experience it in our next life where we may be reborn in a hell realm?

Hence relying on the Buddhas and engaging in the recitation of mantras does not mean that our entire life will immediately be free from negative experiences. Relying on the Buddhas means that we learn the methods to stop ourselves from creating futher negative karma, as well as the methods to purify negative karma. One such method is that of mantra recitations which are recommended by the Buddha himself, as well as every other attained master since then. It does not make sense that they would recommend to us any activity that is ultimately harmful to us. The Buddhas are by definition compassionate beings and mantras are actually the energies of the Buddhas in the form of sound. Therefore according to Buddhist logic, the use of mantras can never truly harm you. In fact they will always try to benefit you, but can only do so depending on our karma.

Buddhist practitioners, rather than see difficulties as something negative, actually take these experiences to train the mind to become centred and withstand various circumstances so we can experience personal growth. Therefore in essence, it is not that the Buddhas are not strong any more, but that one’s own negative karma can stop the Buddhas from helping us. Therefore the purification of karma is very important.

I am glad that you believe in karma and so are living virtuously. This is something everyone should aspire to, regardless of the level of conviction they have in the Buddhas. If you would like to start reciting the mantra again, can I suggestion that you recite the mantra of Dorje Shugden: OM BENZA WIKI BITANA SOHA. As Dorje Shugden is a Dharma protector, his energies actually make our life smoother, and significantly lessen the negative effects of our karma. I really hope this short explanation helps.

Question asked by Thorim

(sorry for my english)As I newly discovered mantra recitation, I would know if we need to adjust a "balance" in time of meditation beetween the mantra recitation and the others forms of pratice(vipassana, visualisation for compassion…), for example mantra just to start and end meditation or it can become the main pratice? Thanks, I hope my question is clear.

  1. Reply by pastor

    Dear Thorim,

When you are starting out in either meditation or mantra recitation, the balance between the two is entirely up to you and how much time you can spare in your daily life. Both have very beneficial results.

You can indeed take the mantra recitation as the main practice, in fact the mantra is considered one of the most important aspects of daily practice, as it is through mantra that we are able to invoke upon the enlightened energies of the Buddhas. In traditional Tibetan Buddhist retreats, one actually concentrates on the mantra and accumulates a certain amount, typically 100,000. This is however for an intensive retreat setting.

Depending on the type of meditation you are engaging, the recitation of mantra can be used as the main part of the practice. For example to develop single pointed concentration, many people concentrate on counting the breath, or concentrate on an object. However you can also concentrate on the sound of the mantra. So you can develop single-pointed concentration. This can be coupled with various visualisations during the mantra recitations as well.

In essence there is no set balance between the two, as mantra recitation can actually be used as a form of meditation, while at the same time invoking the enlightened energies of the Buddhas.

Question asked by ENTER NAME

Is every sentence of the Dharma can be recited as a mantra? And is it useful to transfom the mind?

  1. Reply by pastor

    Dear friend,

The Dharma is holy and can definitely be used to transform the mind. In fact Dharma is for the transformation of the mind. Each and every sentence of the Dharma can be used in one way or another to deepen one’s spiritual practice and transform the mind to benefit others. You can recite sentences of the Dharma to aid your practice for sure.

Mantras however are specifically the energies of the Buddhas in the form of sound, so are defined as such in the various scriptures. All mantras bestow the blessings of the Buddhas and enlightened beings, plant imprints in our mindstreams and aid us in our journey towards enlightenment. In fact mantras are so powerful that they can lead us to enlightenment. These mantras were taught by the Buddhas themselves, and have been passed on throughout the ages until today, therefore the energies of these Buddhas flow through these mantras.

There are mantras that also have very specific benefits. For example the mantra of Manjushri is known to increase one’s intelligence and memory whilst the mantra of Dorje Shugden is known to provide protection, clear obstacles and bring conducive conditions for both our secular and spiritual wellbeing. You can learn more about mantras, their purpose and their benefits here: https://www.tsemrinpoche.com/tsem-tulku-rinpoche/buddhas-dharma/mantras-holy-words-of-power.html.

Question asked by an

Is the mantra "May I be filled of compassion ans loving-kindness for all beings" a good mantra to recite? Thanks

  1. Reply by pastor

    Dear an,

What you have written here is something very beneficial for your spiritual practice, but it is more of an aspirational prayer rather than a mantra. Reciting this mirrors the refuge prayer that includes the Bodhicitta motivation. This is very good because it reminds you and motivates you to practice compassion and loving-kindness for all sentient beings.

The word ‘mantra’ in English and other languages does not really convey the real meaning of the word. Nowadays mantra simply means something that is repeated over and over again, but the true meaning is that mantras are actually the energies of the Buddhas in the form of sound so they are considered very sacred. They were given by the Buddhas themselves so they are very powerful to recite and meditate on. You can read more about mantras here: https://www.tsemrinpoche.com/tsem-tulku-rinpoche/buddhas-dharma/mantras-holy-words-of-power.html. This is a very good teaching all about the purpose and meaning of mantras.

Question asked by Pseudonimo gracias

If I would like something with all my heart, can it be created almost instantly through samadhi?

  1. Reply by pastor

    Dear Pseudonimo gracias

The term ‘samadhi’ is very board in its definition, it can refer to a wide variety of states of meditative concentration. There are very high states of meditation attained by high level beings through which they can indeed manifest what they want. However when they have reached this state, they have lessened their attachment. As such what they manifest is usually not what they ‘want’ because their attachments have been lessened.

What they usually manifest from meditative states are things that teach the Dharma to others or help others with the Dharma practice to achieve enlightenment. So in essence yes, you can manifest things through the power of Samadhi, but this takes a very high level being who has achieved the higher states of meditation and also, the things that we may wish for now will not be what the these higher level pracitioners would manifest. This is because on a normal level we have much more attachment, so what we wish for and desire, usually only binds us further into samaric existence, where as a high level practitioner would have less attachment, therefore would only use his/her attainments to benefit others. I hope this helps.

Question asked by Bradley

Dear Pastors, I'm not sure what too do, my family's home that I am watching has an ant infestation in the kitchen. I try to sweep them kindly away to where they are coming from, and not too harm them and attempt to do a through cleaning of the counters to remove ant trails. Are there some non-aggressive approaches to dealing with insects like these? As I am aware of the precept of not killing sentient beings. It pains me greatly to be in a situation like this, I don't want to hurt or kill them, nor aquire the karma of killing them but I can't allow the house to be over runned before my family returns. I don't even swat mosquitoes and if I find spiders or flys in the house I capture and release them outdoors. What would you do in a situation like this?

  1. Reply by pastor

    Dear Bradley,

Your question is a very sincere one and shows that you are really trying to keep your precepts well. I really rejoice for you. Anything that happens in life, is due to karma. Therefore the reason why you have an ant infestation is because you have a karmic link to all the little ants that invade the house. That being said you are facing this problem because this karma still exists, therefore in order to solve the problem you need to get rid of this karma and one way in which you can do so is through purification practices, such as the 35 Confessional Buddhas or Vajrasattva recitation. You can recite the prayer remembering the Four Opponent Powers: Refuge, Regret, Remedy (the recitation) and Resolve. Then dedicate the merits to the ants. You should think strongly that through the purification, the karma is cut, and you wish them a good rebirth and that they can practice the Dharma and achieve enlightenment. This will go a long way in helping the problem on a spiritual level.

On a physical level, you can try using essential oils such as Peppermint, Tea Tree, Clove, Lemon or Orange. Just put a few drops in a piece of cotton wool and leave near the areas that are infected. Alternatively you can dilute in water and spray on the areas that are effected. You can also use vinegar or apple cider vinegar instead of essential oils. I had tried both before and they work. Just make sure you do not spray directly on to the ants as this will kill them.

Alternative you can create a citrus spray. Simply add peels (lemons, oranges, etc.) into a pot and cover with water. Heat this up until steaming, and then let cool down. For more effect, let it cool overnight. Then strain and you can use this as a spray. I hope this helps.

Question asked by Thorim

Is there "hightest" compassion meditation than Tonglen/the classical ones(visualising one friend, one neutral etc…) as I do these one since 2 years(around ~500 hours of meditation)? Thanks!

  1. Reply by pastor

    Dear Thorim,

There is no “highest” compassion meditation per se. All compassion meditation if done correctly leads to the same goal which is the development of compassion, but more than that it is the internalisation of compassion. This leads one to operate every minute of every day from this compassion.

When studying compassion, to ensure that the practice is successful, one should study, contemplate and train on a graduated path, as detailed in the various Lam Rim teachings. As the great Lama Atisha said, to have a firm practice that results in real transformation, “train yourself in stages.”

The most comprehensive of these teachings would be Lama Tsongkhapa’s Lam Rim Chenmo. However this work is rather large, so two good texts which are easily read and understandable are Liberation in the Palm of Your Hand by Pabongka Rinpoche and Joyful Path of Good Fortune by Geshe Kelsang Gyatso.

I will concentrate on an explanation of Liberation in the Palm of Your Hand. In this particular text, out of all the methods of meditating on compassion, Pabongka Rinpoche specifically mentions two particular systems.

Method One: Developing Bodhicitta through the Cause & Effect Instruction
This method works by primarily seeing all sentient beings as those you are attracted to (those you care about), rather than focusing on neutrality and those you have aversion for (those whom you dislike). This method was used by such great masters as Arya Chandrakirti, Chandragomin and Santarakshita. In a nutshell, there are eight sections to this method:

    1. Developing immeasurable equanimity: through meditation on the three types of beings – those whom you like, are neutral towards and dislike.

    2. Understanding all sentient beings to be your mother: through this one begins to develop compassion for all sentient beings and begins to understand that in previous lifetimes they have all been our mothers.

    3. Remembering their kindness: Since all sentient beings have been our mothers, they have showed us immense kindness before.

    4. Repaying their kindness: this leads one to start acting out of compassion rather than meditating on it intellectually. This creates a powerful shift and physical transformation in one’s life.

    5. Love through the force of attraction: this means that now one meditates on all sentient beings as your children, therefore you have a strong disposition to want to look after all of them. This furthers your compassion and makes you act out of compassion even stronger.

    6. Compassion: this is the stage of realisation that all sentient beings are suffering in samsara, there we develop the unshakable aspiration that all sentient beings, without exception need to be free from their suffering.

    7. Altruism: this means that we take the responsibility to relieve all sentient beings from their suffering.

    8. Bodhicitta: we come to the realisation that ultimately we will not be able to help all sentient beings in our current state, which is the same as theirs, helplessly being reborn again and again in samsara. Upon reflection we deduce that the only possible way to help all sentient beings is to become a fully enlightened being – a Buddha, who has the capacity to benefit beings spontaneously and effortlessly. We then develop the conviction that it is not possible to benefit others until we have achieve full omniscience and with this comes a yearning to attain complete enlightenment ourselves, in order to help others.

Some people think that this is too basic, and that they already have this wish. This view however is mistaken because this is actually an advanced and core practice on the path towards enlightenment. This Mahayana motivation to become enlightened for the sake of all sentient beings must be internalised correctly rather than a mere intellectual understanding. And this is one of the purposes of training in compassion.

Method Two: Seven-Point Mind Training (Advanced Tonglen)
This method works as at developing equanimity through exchanging self and others, focusing on equalising feels of like, dislike and neutrality. This method was used by the great Shantideva. There are seven sections to this:

    1. Teaching of the preliminaries: which are the Small and Medium Scopes of the Lam Rim teachings.

    2. Training in the two types of Bodhicitta: which are the Relative Bodhicitta and the Ultimate Bodhicitta.

    3. Meditating on equalising the self and others.

    4. Contemplating the many faults arising from self-cherishing.

    5. Contemplating the many good qualities resulting from cherish others.

    6. The actual contemplation on the interchange of self and others.

    7. With the previous points as the basis, the way to meditate on giving and taking.

If you are practicing Tonglen, and would like to strengthen your practice. I would suggest that you read up on this section of the Lam Rim, it will help you greatly. I hope my explanation helps.

Question asked by Harold Musetescu

Is there such a thing as a Dorje Shugden "Wealth Vase?

  1. Reply by pastor

    Dear Harold Musetescu,

Yes Dorje Shugden wealth vases do exist, or more correctly Gyenze Dorje Shugden wealth vases exist as the form of Dorje Shugden that is invoked for the creation of wealth vases is Gyenze. There are many practices through which wealth vases can be created and one of these is Dorje Shugden.

In 2015 Kechara hosted the Venerable 7th Panglung Kuten, an oracle of Dorje Shugden, who also takes trance of various other protectors. During that time the Panglung Kuten was kind enough to consecrate our Yangkam or Wealth Cabinet was constructed in Kechara Forest Retreat. One of the most precious items placed inside Yangkams are wealth vases. Apart from various other wealth drawing items and offerings, the main set of wealth vases in the Yangkam are Dorje Shugden wealth vases. These were very kindly created and consecrated by the Panglung Kuten himself at Kechara Forest Retreat. You can read more about the purpose and creation of the Yangkam here: https://www.tsemrinpoche.com/tsem-tulku-rinpoche/kechara-13-depts/get-involved-in-the-wealth-box-project-in-kfr.html

You can invite Dorje Shugden wealth vases from any of our Kechara Paradise outlets in Malaysia or online here: http://www.vajrasecrets.com/wealth-vases if you are not based in Malaysia.

Question asked by Thorim

Hello,

Is there a teaching to medidate on 'subtle' emptiness?

Thanks!

  1. Reply by pastor

    Dear Thorim,

If I have understood your question correctly you are actually asking about the Ultimate Truth. Within the Buddhist tradition following Acharya Nagarjuna’s Middle Way Philosophy there are two truths. The first is known as the Conventional Truth and the second is the Ultimate Truth. To understand emptiness we need to have a firm grasp of the first and a realisation of the second.

    Conventional Truth
This is the understanding that phenomena exists, but are empty of inherent existence due to their reliance on all other phenomena. For example, we exist due to our component parts, which are reliant on our parents, our parents’ existence is reliant on our grandparents, and so on. This is just one way to view Conventional Truth.

    Ultimate Truth
This is the understand that that all phenomena are empty of inherent existence. Our perception of reality is based on this understanding in contrast to Conventional Truth, which is more of an intellectual understanding.

I believe that you are referring to the Ultimate Truth when you mention ‘subtle’ emptiness. There are definitely meditations on this type of emptiness. These meditations exist in both the Sutric path and the Tantric path. However these sorts of meditations are not effective without a very firm grasping of the Conventional Truth.

You can read an excellent commentary to Emptiness which touches on the Two Truths by way of an explanation of The Praise to Buddha Shakyamuni and The Essence of Wisdom Sutra (Hear Sutra) by Sermey Khensur Lobsang Tharchin in his book ‘The Key to the Treasury of Shunyata’. Through meditation and contemplation on these texts one can develop an understanding of emptiness. Step by step one is able to progress further and further to the subtler levels of emptiness.

Within tantric practice there are meditations that concentrate on this form of emptiness, however they can only successful when one has an immovable intellectual grasp first. I hope this helps to answer your question.

Question asked by l

The skeleton couple is the protector of vajrayogini practice. Kalarupa is the protector of yamantaka practice. I would like to ask who is the protector of chitamani tara practice? I did not see you stated in your blog in the section of chitamani tara. Tq.

  1. Reply by pastor

    Dear 1,

Thank you for your question. There is no special protector associated with Cittamani Tara’s practice according to His Eminence 25th Tsem Rinpoche. This is because Cittamani Tara’s practice is special, as Tara herself is considered a protector.

Tara has 21 forms, of which some of them are very wrathful. These wrathful forms of Tara can protect practitioners from black magic, spirit harm, demons, and negative influences from negative astrological effects from the stars and constellations, and other dangers. These forms protect us from the various types of interferences that Dharma protectors would ordinarily do as well.

In fact within the prayer known as ‘Longing for Tara’ by Matisara, it states that when you propitiate Tara sincerely with full faith, you do not need to engage in the practice of a Dharma protector. This is because Tara herself will provide you will all the help you need, from material sustenance and friendship to being your protector. In fact in the prayer it says that some Dharma protectors are not fulfilling their roles and some of the Buddhas have ‘sunk’ into the state of nirvana, so Tara acts as a protector.

Tara is considered the Guru, Yidam and Protector. She has already manifested in various forms that fulfill the roles of a Dharma protector. This is why you can commonly see that she is called Tara the Protector.

Question asked by Eli Levine

Good even Pastors,

I have a question regarding the Bardo Thodol and it referring to beings being able to manifest as Sambhogakaya Buddhas if they're able to relax and recognize the correct lights from the Five Buddha Families. How is becoming a Sambhogakaya Buddha different from achieving Parinirvana?

Thank you so much for your excellent work!

  1. Reply by pastor

    Dear Eli Levine,

I have not received teachings on the Bardo Thodol or the various mediation techniques associated with the text. However from your explanation if a person is able to achieve the Sambhogakaya form, then they would necessarily have achieved the enlightened state of a Buddha. This is very much a possibility because Lama Tsongkhapa has stated that there are three periods in which one can practice and achieve enlightenment through the tantric path and they are our everyday waking state, the dream or sleeping state and lastly the bardo state.

From what you have mentioned to occur, i.e. to recognise the correct lights from the Five Buddha Families, this would necessarily involve an expert understanding of the bardo state, through intense study of the Bardo Thodol, and very in-depth and stable meditations, first concentration meditation and then meditation on the process of death (in order to recognise that you are in the bardo) and then finally extensive visualisation meditations to familiar yourself with the visions/lights that appear in the bardo (to recognise that the lights are from the Five Buddha Families). Following this it is possible to achieve the Sambhogakaya form but would take much effort on the part of the practitioner.

Lama Tsongkhapa, however, stated the best and effective way to gain enlightenment would be at the moment of death, arising in the illusory body and achieving enlightenment in that state rather than any other, including the bardo. This is achieved by practicing the completion stages of Highest Yoga Tantra in waking life. One of the reasons for this is that while you are in the bardo it is difficult to keep a very focus and balanced mind, and you are completely and utterly under the throes of karma and delusions. Therefore for what you have mentioned to occur would take a lot of effort and mental stabilisation achieved during life, which could be used in the bardo state after death. I hope this helps.

I found your website through being guided into activating the Pineal Gland. Can you tell me more about this? Thanks!

  1. Reply by pastor

    Dear Denise,

The article on Pineal Glands was an external article, therefore the Kechara pastors do not have any knowledge or experiences in practicing the activation of Pineal Glands, nether are we trained in this. Perhaps you could search more online for the information you would like to know. I’m sure you will find reputable websites with accurate information details how one foes about activating the Pineal Glands. I am sorry that I cannot be much more help on this matter.

Question asked by Eli Levine

Dear Pastors,

Thank you for your quick reply to my previous question. I was wondering how one might develop compassion in an effective manner, since I've read the stages of development and find that I already can develop compassion for even transgressors of the path (even though this is not something I can yet sustain permanently; it just kind of spontaneously arises).

At present, my life is in an incredibly uncertain stage. I've managed to find work after I've finished with my present AmeriCorps year, but that will only last another year, and then I've got to find other work to support myself. I'm finding it very difficult to develop and cultivate compassion in a world where, as I mentioned, I'm still burning up karma from past lives, and my hopes and dreams to help others and myself frequently are thwarted. I realize that not getting what you want is sometimes a great stroke of luck. I'm just wondering how one is able to align themselves with the universe, such that one does not want what the universe isn't prepared to give? I'm personally exhausted by perceiving people and opportunities that may help all beings turn to dust the moment I reach for them, and I don't like the doubt that that creates in my mind towards all people and opportunities that may prove to be more substantial. I'll always try to help others and myself, it's just aggravating not being able to.

Hoping you can help. Thank you.

  1. Reply by pastor

    Dearest Eli Levine,

I would suggest that you get a copy of Liberation in the Palm of Your Hand, which is a Lam Rim text from the notes of Kyabje Pabongka Rinpoche’s teachings that were written down and edited by Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche. Alternatively you could get a copy of Joyful Path of Good Fortune by Geshe Kelsang Gyatso, which is another great Lam Rim text. Both these texts are excellent and can guide practitioners on the Buddhist path very well, in all aspects of the path including the development of compassion.

Another book, which is presented in a very easy to understand manner is Compassion Conquers All, by His Eminence 25th Tsem Rinpoche and details the practical application of the Eight Verses of Mind Transformation. There is another book which is excellent to study and that is Compassion in Tibetan Buddhism.

As you can see and have no doubt come across in your readings, there is a multitude of resources out there that teach the development of compassion. However, the key here is that you need to actually apply the methods listed in the resources, rather than just have an intellectual knowledge as this will not get you very far.

As with all the Buddhist practices and philosophies, the key is the actual practice of what you have studied. From the rest of your explanation is seems that you have not come to a thorough understanding of some other aspects of the Buddhist paths. This is a reason why it is important to train oneself in a graded path, step by step and is why teachings such as the Lam Rim are very important on our spiritual path towards enlightenment. One of the things we need to remember and realise is the falseness of our perceptions of not only samsaric existence but our expectations of what our spiritual path should be like. Most of the time when on the spiritual path, we have our own expectations or wants of how our spiritual path should be, but in most cases even these are due to our own attachments.

In regards to compassion you should learn up and practice the following:
    1. The practice of the Six Perfections.
    2. The Eight Verses of Mind Transformation.
    3. The importance and practice of Bodhicitta (using both the Cause & Effect Instruction, and the Seven-Point Mind Training). These can be found in the various Lam Rim texts, especially the Liberation in the Palm of Your Hand.

It is the actual practice of these, and not just an intellectual understanding of the method that will led to the development of compassion. The spontaneous instances of what you think is compassion, is only the very beginning and comes about from an intellectual understanding rather than an actualisation of the practice. Once you beginning to practice further, you will see that your compassion will increase and widen to include more and more beings, and there will be more instances in which this occurs, until it becomes your very being. That is how the development of compassion occurs, it is through effort, learning and practice rather than something that is spontaneous. I hope this helps.

Question asked by Eli Levine

Good evening/morning Pastors,

I hope everyone is doing well at Kechara and is living life to its fullest.

I was wondering how one could tell if they were a Buddha or not. It seems counter-intutive that one claims Buddhahood spontaneously (which makes them suspect for ego), or is recognized by other Buddhas (even though there don't appear to be any living at the moment, as far as I can tell). I have read the Diamond Sutra and the Bardo Thodl to look for clues. I understand interdependent existence and that all that I experience is created by myself. I also smile at the silliness of existence, realizing that that is just a concept. Am I a Buddha? Is this something that time will prove to others, even if I am convinced? Frankly, I feel as though I am just waiting and burning out negative and positive karma at this point; I only want parinirvana.

I hope you're able to guide me.

Thank you.

  1. Reply by pastor

    Dear Eli Levine,

Thank you for your well wishes. In regards to your question, if one asks such a question then it is evident from scriptural basis that one is not enlightened. When enlightenment is achieved, one’s mind would become the Dharmakaya, therefore would know one is in fact enlightened. There would be no doubt in this, it would simply be a fact. That is not to say we are not on the path to achieving this, simply that we have yet to achieve our goal.

As for living Buddhas recognising other Buddhas, there are in fact many Buddhas living currently that can therefore identify other Buddhas. It is a well-known fact that many high lamas are emanations of various Buddhas, and so they can recognise each other. Buddhas can emanate in many forms from high lamas, normal monks or nuns, teachers or even our family and friends to benefit sentient beings, but as un-enlightened beings we are not able to recognise them as such. But those who are living can and do recognise each other, and within the framework of Tibetan Buddhism it is practice to recognise them as such, in order to provide a platform from which to share the Dharma teachings. To say that there are no Buddhas living current actually restricts the compassionate activities of the Buddhas. They can even manifest as inanimate objects to provide sentient beings with relief from suffering and plant beneficial imprints in the minds of these sentient beings.

Since you have understood interdependent origination, and that all experiences are created in the mind, you are on the path, but one key element is missing and this is enlightened compassion. There is a slight difference between understanding, and realisation. Realisation is when a person operates from this understanding. This can be a measuring stick to show others that one is enlightened. An enlightened being does not rest in their knowledge and mind but benefits other sentient beings due to their enlightened compassion.

You have also stated that you are burning your positive and negative karma, this is another statement which suggests you have not yet reached the enlightened state. This is because when enlightenment is achieved karma is negated altogether, as one’s mind is free from samsara. The physical body is merely a receptacle for this mind to inhabit. Parinirvana only occurs after nirvana is achieved in one’s physical form. This would necessarily mean you would have to be enlightened already before Parinirvana occurs. From how you have asked the question it seems as though you have not reached that stage….yet. We need to keep learning, practicing, transform our minds, focus out and be of benefit to others, and then we can all achieve enlightenment. This is an achievable fact.

Question asked by Monty

Dear Pastors, Is there a serkyem prayer to Namkar Barzin?

  1. Reply by pastor

    Dear Monty,

Namkar Barzin is a special protector of Domo Geshe Rinpoche, his monasteries and temples. He was oath-bound by Domo Geshe Rinpoche to serve the Dharma and put under the care of Dorje Shugden. As such there are rituals and rites to invoke upon his presence, power and protection. Namkar Barzin also takes trance in the oracles from Domo Geshe Rinpoche’s Dungkar Monastery, where he was installed as a Dharma protector.

Since the practice of serkym is a common aspect to Dharma protector practices, I am sure that a dedicated serkym prayer to Namkar Barzin does indeed exists, however I do not currently have a translated copy of this text. However since he was placed under the care of Dorje Shugden, he is included in the serkym liturgy to Dorje Shugden. He verse is:

    Vow-breakers’ heart-blood purified like gold,
This drink of fully boiling serkym,
I offer to Namka Bardzin and entourage
Accepting, accomplish the yogi’s intended purpose!

You can find the complete serkym liturgy to Dorje Shugden here: http://www.dorjeshugden.org/practice/diamond-path-a-daily-sadhana-of-dorje-shugden

There is also a nice post by His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche, available here: https://www.tsemrinpoche.com/tsem-tulku-rinpoche/buddhas-dharma/invocation-to-namkar-barzin.html, which details a little of his history and benefits. There is also a prayer together with Namkar Barzin’s mantra available on the page. I hope this has helped.

Question asked by Harold Musetescu

Does H.E. Tsem Tulku have a mantra of himself that can be used by his students?
Also I understand that there is no Dorje Shugden Phurba/Kilya practice. If one could be created would it be created by an enlightened master or say an Oracle of Dorje Shugden? There is already a dice divination using Dorje Shugden that was created by an Oracle while in trance of Dorje Shugden. I feel it is time for a Dorje Shugden Phurba/Kilya practice. What do you think, Pastor.

  1. Reply by pastor

    Dear Harold,

Yes His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche does have what is known as a name mantra. This is recited at the end of all pujas conducted in Kechara together with a Long Life prayer for His Eminence to continue to live long and continue expounding the Dharma. It is also recited by His Eminence’s students at the end of their daily practices, just before the recitation of the completion dedication.

Two Long Life prayers can be found here: https://www.tsemrinpoche.com/tsem-tulku-rinpoche/buddhas-dharma/long-life-prayer-by-kensur-konchok-tsering-rinpoche-and-trijang-rinpoche.html. These were composed by His Holiness Trijang Choktrul Rinpoche and Kensur Rinpoche Konchok Tsering (the Abbot Emeritus of Gaden Shartse Monastery) for students to recite for His Eminence’s Long Life.

His Eminence 25th Tsem Rinpoche’s name mantra: OM AH GURU KIRTI DAZA SHASEN DHARA KYANDHI SIDDHI HUNG HUNG

This mantra is recited 21 times or more by students or others who pray for Rinpoche’s long life. The past masters have actually said that if you have strong faith and good samaya with your guru, then reciting his name mantra will lead to many attainments in one’s spiritual practice. There have even been cases where a person’s illness has been healed through the power of engaging in a recitation retreat of their guru’s name mantra.

In regards to the phurba practice, this actually refers to the practice of the yidam (meditational deity) known as Dorje Phurba or Vajrakilaya. In this yidam’s practice one of the main implements that is used is an actual phurba/kila. This practice is known to remove obstacles and destroy outer and inner energies that hinder spiritual progress. As this a separate yidam deity practice, there cannot be a Dorje Shugden Phurba practice as they are two different deities.

On the other hand, the phurba/kila as a ritual instrument, is used within certain Dorje Shugden rituals, such as Dorje Shugden’s wrathful fire puja, in which it is used to destroy very malevolent energies, together with other ritual implements. As for a Dorje Shugden ritual that focuses on the use of a phurba specifically, I am unaware if any do exist.

That being said, as you have rightly stated, it is very possible for an enlightened master or even Dorje Shugden himself through the medium of a qualified oracle to compose a ritual that uses a phurba as a main ritual implement.

However rituals that have the same effect as the use of phurba, that destroy negative forces, already do exist within Dorje Shugden’s many rituals, as detailed in His Holiness Trijang Rinpoche definitive corpus of Dorje Shugden teachings, known as ‘Music Delighting the Ocean of Protectors.’ You can find out more about this text here: https://www.tsemrinpoche.com/tsem-tulku-rinpoche/dorje-shugden/music-delighting-the-ocean-of-protectors-a-definitive-guide-to-dorje-shugden-by-trijang-rinpoche.html. At present the English translation is not of the entire text. The remainder of the text dealing with the various rituals to Dorje Shugden to fulfill certain purposes has not been translated into English as of yet.

One thing that I know for sure, if we engage in the practice of Dorje Shugden on a daily basis together with Lama Tsongkhapa’s Guru Yoga or any other deity practice, we will definitely be protected from various harms and obstacles. If one practices mind transformation, the six perfections and the path as expounded in the various Lam Rim texts, then the holy enlightened beings can definitely bless and protect us from negative energies and forces. I hope this small explanation has helped.

Question asked by Lee

How can we help spirits if we know that they need help but we are unable to understand and do not know how to help them? Any suggestion?

  1. Reply by pastor

    Dear Lee,

This is a very good question. For the most of us we are unable to help spirits because we do not have such attainments from our spiritual practice to be able to do so. This is possible though, and is attainable through higher states of mind that comes about from intense spiritual practice. For us, however, who do not have this ability the best method to help spirits would be to engage in virtuous activities and dedicate the merits generated from those activities to alleviating their sufferings.

A good example would be generating the merits from our daily practice to them or even engaging in or sponsoring pujas or prayers to be recited for them. This is very beneficial as not only is there a generation of merit but we are invoking the various energies of the enlightened beings to aid them. Two very good pujas to do are Dharma protector pujas such as Dorje Shugden, Setrap or Kalarupa, and secondly Medicine Buddha Puja. The Dharma protector puja generates a lot of merit that helps to clear the obstacles that the spirit may be facing, while the Medicine Buddha puja would provide them with healing energy and plants beneficial imprints in their mindstreams for the future.

If we are very sincere in our wish to alleviate the suffering of spirits, then we should engage in spiritual practice wholeheartedly. When we have gained our own attainments then we can help the spirits ourselves. I hope this helps.

Question asked by David

If we wear a protector string or pendant when we do our meditations and mantras, will that help open up our postitive imprints from past lives?

  1. Reply by pastor

    Dear David

Thank you for your question. Yes, both of these holy items can help open up imprints from past lives, as a protection string is blessed by the protector and pendants bless our bodies and mind.

However the best and most effective way to open up these imprints, even more so than wearing protection strings and pendants is to engage in the actual practice of the Dharma. By this I mean actual mind transformation, and development of the Six Perfections. While we are practicing the beneficial virtues such as generosity, patience, good ethical conduct, etc., since we have these imprints from previous lives, these open up quicker and we able to use them on our spiritual path towards enlightenment. These imprints are further strengthened and refined by our current practice, which furthers our spiritual progress. I hope this helps.

Meet the Pastors

Serving the community. Tirelessly

Combining the responsibilities of the ordained and the appearance of a layperson, pastors are the connection between the sangha and the everyday practitioner. They are ordinary people who have taken an extraordinary step in dedicating their lives towards sharing the Buddhist tradition. As laypeople holding vows, pastors will make the Dharma accessible to more people, giving them guidance and sharing knowledge. The pastors are usually present at Kechara House and available for consultation anytime. For more information, contact house@kechara.com.

Pastor Chia (sangha to be)

As a pastor, Chia will dedicate his life to befitting others through spreading the works of Tsem Rinpoche and Dharma to many people, through the use of pujas, rituals, counseling and sharing of his knowledge.

Ordained as a Pastor in 2011, Chia Song Peng has had a rich and varied Dharma career. He has held a core position with the Kechara Paradise retail outlets, served as a personal attendant to Tsem Rinpoche, embarked on various pilgrimages and received initiations into higher yoga tantric practices. He is accomplished in many pujas and has a deep understanding of the Dharma.

As a pastor, Chia has dedicated his life to befitting others through spreading the works of Tsem Rinpoche and Dharma to many people, through the use of pujas, rituals, counseling and sharing of his knowledge.

When Chia first met Tsem Rinpoche, he was asked if he wanted to become a monk, however even though this was his aspiration he informed Tsem Rinpoche that he would do so at a later date. For Chia, as he has is already in the Dharma full-time, it would be best if he became ordained. Tsem Rinpoche has reminded Chia from time to time to work towards becoming a monk and he promised that he would do so in the future.

Kechara began from nothing to become a growing Dharma organisation with major projects such as Kechara Forest Retreat, so Chia thinks that this is the perfect time to become ordained as a monk. Recently Tsem Rinpoche asked Chia again if he would like to be ordained, this time Chia said yes.

Pastor Khong Jean Ai (sangha to be)

Jean Ai wishes to become a vessel that holds the teachings of Lama Tsongkhapa to benefit future generations, inspiring others to live by the Buddha’s teachings.

Jean Ai met His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche as a young child and through her parents' involvement with Kechara over the years, she has never known a life without His Eminence. Jean Ai was a regular volunteer of Tsem Ladrang during her childhood and teenage years. After graduating with a BSc (Hons) in Psychology from the University of Warwick in the UK and working at the London Probation Service, she returned to Kuala Lumpur to join Tsem Ladrang's e-division. There she managed kechara.com, responsible for the weekly Kechara e-newsletter, including content generation and editing. Since then she has joined His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche’s writing team, responsible for executing Rinpoche’s personal instructions and managing his correspondence.

Having visited a nunnery in India in 2004, Jean Ai remembers noticing how happy and purposeful everyone was. She had a feeling of familiarity and the sight of the robes comforted her. Immediately, Jean Ai messaged her mother who told her to ask Rinpoche’s advice. Rinpoche told her to complete her secular education so that when she taught the Dharma her words would carry the credibility and weight of a university degree, something she completed with the motivation that some day she wanted to become a nun.

Through her ordination as a nun, Jean Ai wishes to become a vessel that holds the teachings of Lama Tsongkhapa to benefit future generations, inspiring others to live by the Buddha’s teachings. Through this she hopes to repay the kindness of her parents and her Guru. Above all she wants to abide in a state free of suffering, and she wants this for others as well.

Pastor Shin Tan (sangha to be)

For Shin, this is a great step forward to being fully committed to the cause of others and repaying others’ kindness through sharing the Dharma with others.

Before joining Kechara, Shin worked as a lecturer and provider of content and e-learning content solutions for various start-ups. Whilst providing training to educators teaching students in English for Specific Purposes (ESP) at various colleges, she was invited to attend a Dharma talk given by His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche at Kechara House. This event rekindled her interest in Tibetan Buddhism, as she recalled the joy of accompanying her parents to teachings as a teenager.

Joining Kechara Media & Publications in 2006 as a volunteer, Shin assumed a full time position there as a Marketing Executive, with the aim of making His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche’s teachings available to more people around the world. Shin is now a member of the Tsem Ladrang Team, who takes care of His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche’s secular matters, enabling Rinpoche to focus on teaching the holy Dharma.

Shin states that when she decided to join Kechara full time, she had already decided to be of some benefit to others and spend the rest of her life doing only that. Working closely with His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche, seeing his tireless effort in helping others and spreading the Buddhadharma through the Gaden tradition despite tremendous challenges has made her realise that the next logical step is to become ordained as she has the opportune conditions to study with her Guru. For Shin this is also a great step forward to being fully committed to the cause of others and repaying others’ kindness through sharing the Dharma with others.

Pastor Adeline Woon (sangha to be)

Since finding her spiritual home here in Kechara, Adeline has made dharma work her life’s mission and wishes to dedicate herself fully towards the benefit of others.

Adeline stumbled across His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche's blog towards the end of 2010 and has been following his blog and Facebook page ever since. Since graduating from Dharma Drum Buddhist College Taiwan with a Masters of Arts in Religious Studies in July 2012, she returned to Malaysia and joined Kechara as a Senior Education Executive. Adeline was attracted by His Eminence’s straightforwardness and impressed at Kechara's growth under his guidance. To Adeline, His Eminence is someone who walks the talk, keeps his promises and sincerely cares for others displaying an excellent example of guru devotion, qualities that she seeks to develop herself.

Since finding her spiritual home here in Kechara, Adeline has made dharma work her life’s mission. It was in May 2013 that she officially requested His Eminence for ordination as a nun to dedicate her life fully for the dharma. According to Adeline, become ordained means that she is being true to her calling to live according to the dharma and be of benefit to others.

This however can only be achieved by meeting and studying under her root Guru. Adeline has been fortunate enough to have met with hers - His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche.

Pastor Niral Patel (sangha to be)

It is Niral’s motivation for full ordination to better himself, learn the teachings of our lineage in order to preserve them for future generations. He wishes to benefit others, just as he has benefited and is still benefiting from Tsem Rinpoche’s explanation of the Dharma.

Niral was born and raised in the UK, having graduated with a BA in Anthropology, he was working as a Financial Administrator for a Serviced Apartment & Hotel company as well as a Management Services company before stumbling across His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche’s Youtube channel, entirelyby accident. It was through His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche’s teachings that he began to understand the importance of practicing the Dharma, in order to benefit himself and others around him.

Having been in contact with one of Tsem Rinpoche’s long time students in the UK, he was encouraged to visit Kechara in late 2012 for a 10 day visit. At the end of the visit Tsem Rinpoche requested Niral to come to work at Kechara, to which he agreed.

Niral moved to Malaysia in February 2013 to work as an education coordinator at Kechara House, assisting the Education Division in the creation and implementation of the new education syllabus, teaching teenagers during the Kechara Sunday Dharma School. Ever since meeting Tsem Rinpoche, he has always been encouraged by Tsem Rinpoche to do more Dharma work and strive to better himself. It is with that in mind, that Niral has requested monastic ordination.

It is Niral’s motivation for full ordination to better himself, learn the teachings of our lineage in order to preserve them for future generations. He wishes to benefit others, just as he has benefited and is still benefiting from Tsem Rinpoche’s explanation of the Dharma.

Pastor Tan Gim Lee (sangha to be)

Gim Lee’s main focus is to guide and help anyone who steps through Kechara’s doors through Dharma sharing, counselling, performing pujas and other Buddhist services. She wishes to repay Rinpoche’s kindness by spreading Lama Tsongkhapa’s holy teachings and inspiring others on the spiritual path.

She discovered Kechara by chance in 2006 and started to participate Kechara's activities almost immediately especially the retreat to collect 10 million Migtsema recitations. In April 2006, when Gim Lee met H.E. Tsem Rinpoche and first listened to his teachings, she wept uncontrollably. Though she could not understand it at the time, she had finally found her perfect teacher. She is especially touched by Tsem Rinpoche's compassionate method of teaching by setting his own examples.

Having joined as a staff of Kechara House responsible for housekeeping in 2009, Gim Lee is now one of Kechara House's Front Desk Managers predominantly based in the retreat centre in Bentong, Pahang. She also teaches the Sunday Dharma Class and moderates Dharma discussions on Tsem Rinpoche's blog chat.

The many teachings she has received from Tsem Rinpoche have changed her priorities in life. She found answers to her questions about the purpose of life, and she has realised that the way to overcome the sufferings of pain and anger is by following the path of compassion and wisdom as taught by Lord Buddha. These realisations have led to her request to be ordained as a Sangha member.

As pastor now, and later as a Buddhist nun, Gim Lee's main focus is to guide and help anyone who steps through Kechara's doors through Dharma sharing, counselling, performing pujas and other Buddhist services. She wishes to repay Rinpoche's kindness by spreading Lama Tsongkhapa's holy teachings and inspiring others on the spiritual path.

Pastor Loh Seng Piow (sangha to be)

Loh Seng Piow developed a strong wish to help Rinpoche in spreading the Dharma to the world. With that determination, Loh Seng Piow chose not to pursue his PhD degree in Cambridge University (for which he had been offered a place), resigned from his research job, and joined Tsem Rinpoche as full-time Dharma worker, and has never looked back since.

Back in 2001, Loh Seng Piow had no inkling of just how involved in Dharma he would become. As a Masters degree-holder in Engineering, Loh Seng Piow was working as a research engineer in Singapore when he met His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche. Rinpoche’s talk left a strong impression on him and after a few encounters with Rinpoche, Loh Seng Piow started developing websites for Rinpoche and Kechara.

Loh Seng Piow was trained in science, but soon realised that there were many questions that science could not answer. At the same time, he also felt that science and technology are not the solution to human problems, as humans are much better off compared to thousands years ago, yet the problems in this world are still the same, if not more, and we do not seem to be happier than our ancestors.

Loh Seng Piow soon realised that the Dharma is the ultimate solution to human problems, and that the methods used by His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche are very suitable for this modern era.

Meeting Rinpoche was a very refreshing experience for Loh Seng Piow, as he never knew Dharma could be so unconventional yet maintain its essence. As Rinpoche’s personal attendant, Loh Seng Piow has had many incredible moments with Rinpoche and considers himself extremely fortunate because he sees real Dharma in action, both on and off the throne. It challenges him to practice Dharma 24/7. In this way, Rinpoche has blown away his old and persistent way of thinking, which was very much focused on the outer rituals of Dharma.

Having seen that Tsem Rinpoche truly embodies what he teaches, Loh Seng Piow is convinced beyond doubt that it is possible to develop our minds to a higher state, and ultimately achieving enlightenment. All these factors have propelled Loh Seng Piow to take a step further in his Dharma career to become ordained as a pastor in order to be even more effective in sharing and disseminating the Dharma to benefit others.

Pastor Yek Yee

Naturally an introvert, Yek Yee has transformed what was once her weakness into her strength; making what was once impossible now eminently possible.

Independence was forced upon Kok Yek Yee from the tender age of nine, when she had to juggle between work and school to make ends meet. Always the introvert, Yek Yee had few friends and had difficulty expressing herself. So it was unexpected when she chose a career in journalism.

Yek Yee excelled as an award-winning reporter with Guang Ming Daily and Nanyang Siang Pau. Her articles garnered her a fanbase, and in writing, she found an outlet for the thoughts and feelings that she could not verbalise. However, despite her success, Yek Yee was not satisfied. Temporary happiness was not what she was looking for – success, money, relationships, or fame was not the key.

In her search for happiness, Yek Yee met H.E. Tsem Tulku Rinpoche, who told her “don’t retaliate with your speech, but use your power of writing to express yourself”. This led her to join Kechara Media & Publications as a writer; subsequently she was appointed Senior Editor as well as a Liaison to His Eminence.

Yek Yee now holds a core role in Kechara Care, giving advice, tours, counseling and teachings to whoever walks through their doors. Through courage and determination, she has transformed what was once her weakness into her strength; making what was once impossible now eminently possible.

As a Pastor, her patience and open-mindedness developed through her journey with Kechara will bring comfort and solace, and her new-found ability to nurture and teach others will bring hope to many.

Pastor Lanse Chiah

Having been a Pastor for a year, Lanse wishes to continue with her integral duties by renewing her vows again.

Lanse graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) from Jinan University in Guangzhou, China in 1999 and became a part-time lecturer for several years, teaching western medicine in a Traditional Chinese medical college in Kuala Lumpur.

For a long time, Lanse remained an atheist, subconsciously searching for a spiritual guru as she sought answers to questions she harboured in her mind, questions that had led her into a state of depression during her time at university. As such, she would often read philosophical books in her search for answers.

Lanse first came to know of Kechara in 2007, through her friend of over 10 years, Pastor Yek Yee. She was surprised to see a complete transformation in Pastor Yek Yee, whom she had always known as a non-spiritual person. The first book by Kechara that Lanse chanced upon was the Chinese version of Be Greedy. Naturally, Lanse was skeptical at first, thus she read the book in an attempt to find mistakes with the philosophy. However, she couldn’t find any and was left impressed by how logical the explanations in the book were.

In March 2009, Lanse joined Kechara Media & Publications (KMP) part-time to carry out Chinese translation and help with transcription. The following year, she contemplated upon whether to pursue a full-time medical or a Dharma career, finally deciding on the latter. Lanse came to realise that, although both careers share the same motivation of easing people’s sufferings, she felt that her work in Dharma could lead to a greater contribution for the sake of all sentient beings in a deeper, spiritual sense.

Having been a Pastor for a year, Lanse wishes to continue with her integral duties by renewing her vows again.

Pastor Han Nee

It was not until she witnessed how Rinpoche brought peace and comfort to her dying mother, that she realised she also wanted to touch others with the Dharma.

Lim Han Nee, a mother of two, is a retired secondary school principal. She retired in December 2000 after a 30-year career in education. She obtained her Master’s Degree in Education at Leicester University in the UK, at the end of 2001.

After gaining her master’s degree, Han Nee considered further options of embarking on a doctorate in education or spending her years in retirement, travelling and visiting family. At the same time, she was also in search of her spiritual path. She had begun exploring Theravadan and Chinese Mahayana Buddhism for answers to questions she had.

In December 2004, Han Nee attended a teaching retreat on the topic of the Lamrim and White Tara held by His Eminence Gelek Rinpoche. As the retreat proceeded, she found her questions were being answered. Then in June 2005, Han Nee was introduced to Kechara by her sister, where she met her spiritual guide, His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche, who has recently told her that she must go all the way in the Dharma for the benefit of others.

Han Nee had been a school guidance counsellor for nearly twenty years. However, it was not until she witnessed how Rinpoche brought peace and comfort to her dying mother, that she realised she also wanted to touch others with the Dharma.

A member of Kechara’s Puja Team, who conduct sponsored pujas in Shabten Khang, Han Nee is also a member of the Education Division with the portfolio of Content Development. Apart from this, Han Nee is also a member of the weekly Kechara Chat Time team.

Pastor David Lai

In 2014, with a sincere wish to benefit others, David decided to be ordained as a Buddhist pastor to continue serving the spiritual needs of the organisation.

David Lai has been a student of His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche for over a decade now and was one of the founding members of Kechara. He joined Kechara as a full time staff in 2005 and has been working in various departments beginning with the Kechara Paradise outlets.

Right from the beginning, David had been advised by His Eminence to go into writing. Overcoming various hurdles, David finally began his literary career with the publication of his first book and autobiography, There’s No Way But Up in 2009. The book charts his spiritual journey from his childhood and culminates in the meeting with His Eminence.

The positive feedback from this book led him to write various other publications like Vajrayogini and Other Power Places in Nepal – a pilgrim’s guide of Nepal, Tales My Lama Told Me – a book on short stories and Conversations in Love – a book on relationships. These books continue to inspire and bring people onto the Dharma.

Besides writing, David has found his passion in sharing the Dharma since his earlier days working in the Kechara Paradise outlets. Over the years, David has received innumerable teachings from His Eminence, ranging from public teachings to personal instructions and advice. He is known to passionately share these teachings whenever he can and to whomever he meets. In 2014, with a sincere wish to benefit others, David decided to be ordained as a Buddhist pastor to continue serving the spiritual needs of the organisation.

Pastor Henry Ooi

After following Rinpoche as a Dharma student for all these years, learning and practicing the Dharma, Henry knows the importance of the pastors’ role in Kechara founded by Rinpoche. He wants to become a pastor to serve Rinpoche, to serve Kechara, and to serve the public.

Born in 1952 in Penang, Henry moved to Kuala Lumpur in search of work after he finished his Form Five studies in 1969. He worked at different types of jobs and it was when he was jobless in 1997/8 that he met His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche at the house of his cousin, Ruby (now Dato’ Ruby Khong), when Rinpoche was giving a dharma teaching. At that teaching Henry was awed by how Rinpoche taught Dharma with simple yet profound explanations.

With the kind guidance, teachings and Dharma practices by Rinpoche including instruction to engage in their first spiritual retreat, Henry and his wife Angel started a small business that soon became profitable. A few years later after Kechara House Buddhist Association was founded, Rinpoche started to enrol students as liaisons and that was when Henry and Dato’ Ruby offered themselves. Later more students were elected as liaisons that saw the birth of Liaisons Council. The Liaisons Council is now known as the Board of Directors of which Henry is one of its members.

Currently Henry is the Project Director, overseeing the construction and completion of projects in the Kechara Forest Retreat. Prior to this appointment he was the Head of Department in Kechara Paradise retail outlets of which he served for about ten years. He still remains as its company director as well as director for most of the companies within Kechara. He served one term as vice president of Kechara House Buddhist Association from 2012 to 2103.

After following Rinpoche as a Dharma student for all these years, learning and practicing the Dharma, Henry knows the importance of the pastors’ role in Kechara founded by Rinpoche. He wants to become a pastor to serve Rinpoche, to serve Kechara, and to serve the public. As he aspires to be a monk as he grows older, being a pastor of Kechara will pave the way for his aspiration. Henry believes that as one gets older in life, one should have already prepared for the imminent, death. And what a beautiful death it will be, to die in Kechara Forest Retreat in a monk’s robes. This is the kind of death that Henry wants. But before the imminent death happens, Henry wants to continue working in Kechara Forest Retreat, serving the community and whoever comes into it in whatever way he can. And when he is not physically anymore to serve others, he will request instructions from Rinpoche to enter into retreats in Kechara Forest Retreat.

Pastor Patsy Gooi

All that Patsy wants now is to spend the rest of her life doing dharma work, dharma practices and being of benefit to others.

Formerly a full time housewife with plenty of free time, Patsy had the great fortune to visit Gaden Monastery and meet H.E. Tsem Rinpoche almost twenty years ago. That one week stay in the monastery changed her view of life. Prior to that, she had no spiritual inclinations but meeting Rinpoche stirred something inside her, and she realised that there was more to life than just eating, sleeping, shopping and having fun. Rinpoche’s approach to dharma was logical and practical but most importantly, he stressed that we should always focus out and work towards benefitting others. Rinpoche made dharma easy to understand and his advice was and still is, to “change inwardly, not outwardly.”

In 2009, after years of practicing and applying what she had learned from Rinpoche’s teachings, Patsy decided to set up a Kechara retail outlet in Penang to share the dharma with others. She knew that Rinpoche’s teachings were very applicable to the people of our time and that his activities would benefit others just as they had benefited her. She also wanted to repay the kindness of her Guru who had constantly helped and guided her. Today, Kechara Paradise Penang is not just a dharma shop but also organises puja sessions, animal liberation and dharma talks.

In 2010, again with Rinpoche’s blessings, Patsy set up the Kechara Soup Kitchen Activity Center in Penang. Saddened to see the plight of the homeless and urban poor on the streets, Patsy decided to practice “compassion through action” as taught by Rinpoche in the most active way she knows. Today, together with her team of volunteers, Patsy feeds the homeless and urban poor four times a week and provides basic food provisions to many hardcore poor families on a monthly basis.

All that Patsy wants now is to spend the rest of her life doing dharma work and dharma practices, and that she may be of benefit to others.

Pastor Albert Ratchaga

In 2008, Albert Ratchaga began working as a part timer in Kechara Paradise, but as he learned more about the works of Rinpoche and Kechara, Rinpoche’s kindness and compassion touched him deeply. He realised that his work gave his life more meaning and decided to join Kechara full time.

Through his work as a sales executive, Albert was able learn more Dharma from Rinpoche's teachings and use this wisdom to assist those who entered his store to overcome their problems, thus improving their lives.

Albert soon developed a deep wish to follow in Rinpoche’s footsteps and in 2016 was ordained as a Pastor to continue benefitting and serving others.

In Tibetan Buddhism, refuge and the guru are closely intertwined. Taking refuge in the three jewels expresses the most fundamental connection to Buddhism. Having confronted the limitations of samsara, we are ready for a change. Taking refuge involves seeking protection and guidance from the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, with the guru often seen as a living embodiment of these three jewels. The guru’s role is to guide practitioners towards enlightenment by pointing them to the path and helping them overcome obstacles. Refuge is not merely a symbolic act but a deep commitment to transforming one’s mind and life by relying on these sources of inspiration and guidance. Taking refuge doesn’t protect us from problems such as illness, accidents, and other difficulties. Rather, it provides us with knowledge to transform obstacles into opportunities. We learn how to relate to difficulties in a new way, and this protects us from confusion and despair. Reading again to understand better .

Reading through this blog of what life was like for Pastor Jean Ai, during lockdown. The Movement Control Order which began in 2020 reminded me of how I went through during the lock down. Staying alone by myself as the rest of my family member outstation in KL. Not easy after all everything as such as getting foods etc. I do my shopping twice a week having doing all the necessary disinfection and so on. What I did at home during the lock down and how I spent my time, days indeed not easy Do reading, watching videos at Tsem Rinpoche blog , learning and practicing and in-fact did full prostration and mantras recitation daily . It had changed my life since then and had completed 100k . Through a Dharma brother I managed to get hold of some mantras for rolling too. Interesting,…..watching Pastor Jean Ai’s video at how she interact with friends that’s awesome.
Thank you Rinpoche and Jean Ai for this interesting sharing.

n Tibetan Buddhism, prostrations are a way to express deep respect and devotion to the Three Jewels for the Buddha, his teachings (Dharma), and the spiritual community (Sangha). Prostration is a physical act of deep reverence or worship, which offers a range of benefits across spiritual, physical, and mental domains. It can be a form of prayer, a means of expressing devotion. It is a deeply symbolic act that purifies negative actions, accumulates merit, and cultivates humility and compassion. It can be a form of prayer, a means of expressing devotion. This act is believed to be beneficial for practitioners, cultivating humility, eliminating negative thoughts, and accumulating positive karma which is believed to lead to positive future outcomes and spiritual progress. Whether we believe in karma or not, our negative karma increases without purification. Hence its important , to purify our negative karma through the Vajrasattva and prostrations practice. It also seen as a way to purify our negative mind, emotions and thought patterns, such as pride and ego if we do it well . Thus, the practice of purification is one of the most important solutions to our problems and is extremely necessary for everyone of us. It is more important to put our everyday life’s effort into the practice of purification to attain spiritual realization.
The Vajrasattva purification practice, which is more powerful than negative karma. With this practice can prevent us from experiencing the problems that negative karma would otherwise bring us. Reciting the Vajrasattva mantra before going to bed to prevent whatever negative karma we have created that day from multiplying it is an incredibly powerful method that it makes our life very light and easy and keeps us happy and peaceful in our inner life.
Both Vajrasattva practice and prostrations done with good visualizations are indeed very beneficial for practitioners.
Thank you Rinpoche for this great sharing and teachings .

Du Fu (712-770 AD), also known as Tu Fu, was a prominent Chinese poet of the Tang Dynasty, often considered one of the greatest alongside Li Bai. He was a poet-historian and a poet-sage, known for his realistic depictions of human suffering and reflections on the troubled times of his era. His poems, reflecting his personal experiences and the political instability of the time, have had a lasting impact on both Chinese and Japanese literary traditions.

H H Kyabje Pabongka Dechen Nyingpo is by far one of the most popular and influential Gelug religious figures of the 20th Century. One of Phabongkha’s most important aristocratic students, Lhalu Lhacham Yangdzom Tsering relationship to her teacher and his lineage teachings goes along way .She is famously remembered for is her unwavering devotion towards her guru, HH Kyabje Pabongka Rinpoche. Yangdzom Tsering’s Shatra family were ancient sponsors and students of the Gelug tradition and had apparently been patrons of Tsongkhapa the founder of the Gelug school. The life stories of Lady Lhalu Lhacham Yangdzom as mentioned by Joona Repo is indeed inspiring. How her life struggles with tragedies, and her devotion to dorje Shugden and the Gelug tradition throughout her life.

Looking at these pictures remained me of my first pilgrimage to Wu Tai San. With the blessings of our guru, we able to visit Wu Tai San a significant Buddhist pilgrimage site . In fact it never did come to my mind that I am fortunate given a chance to go as I am still very new then. Upon hearing about the pilgrimage I got myself register without much thought. The history and stories of Wu Tai San has inspired me to go there. Interesting the Emperors Kangxi and Qianlong of China are closely connected to WuTai San. Wu Tai San located in Shanxi Province, China renowned as the home of Lord Manjushri the bodhisattva of wisdom, with different emanations of the bodhisattva residing on each of the five peaks. The area is dotted with over 50 temples and monasteries, many of which are historical and architecturally significant. Those temples built over 7 dynasties housing numerous Buddhist relics. Wutai Shan also offers stunning scenery, including snow-capped peaks, forests, and streams. Wu Tai San is one of the four Sacred Buddhist mountains of China, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Wutai Shan was known to be a mystical and sacred site inhabited by divine spirits, accompanied by unusual events, such as miraculous light appearances at night.
We visited all the Holy sites, making offerings and doing prayers at each sites. We even have the opportunity to collect holy stones for future statue insertion or to keep on our altars. Times flies as our pilgrimage ended with so many stories to share with the rest.
Thank you Rinpoche and writes team sharing those pictures.

Padmasambhava, the Lotus-born Guru, also known as Guru Rinpoche is a legendary tantric Buddhist master who is widely revered in Tibetan Buddhism. He is seen as the second Buddha particularly within the Nyingma .He was a legendary Indian Buddhist mystic credited with introducing Vajrayana Buddhism to Tibet in the 8th century. As found in Buddhist scriptures Padmasambhava birth is often associated with legends and prophecies. Interesting…… Padmasambhava is depicted with eight manifestations, each reflecting a different aspect of his miraculous activities. Interesting article .

Milarepa Cave, situated high in the Himalayan mountain of Tibet, a sacred cave beckons pilgrims and spiritual seekers from across the globe. Milarepa Cave, a site of profound significance in Tibetan Buddhism, is merely a geological wonder. This sacred cave is also a living testament to the power of meditation and devotion. Its where an 11th-century yogi and poet who spent transformative years in solitary practice. Milarepa Cave graces Tibet’s rugged yet stunning landscapes, a region renowned for its deep spiritual heritage and breath-taking natural beauty. The cave’s importance is inseparable from a revered figure and the enduring legacy of Jetsun Milarepa a revered yogi and poet in Tibetan Buddhism. Milarepa Cave stands not just as a geological formation but as a powerful symbol of spiritual transformation and the enduring strength of Tibetan Buddhism. Reading this interesting cave had me Google for more information about this sacred cave. Numerous stories and legends surround Milarepa’s time in the cave, enhancing its mystical aura.

I wanted to take a moment to share a recent experience with you regarding my Instagram account. Unfortunately, my account was hacked, which was both frustrating and disappointing. Losing access to something that plays a significant role in my business and personal connections was incredibly stressful. What made the situation even more challenging was discovering that Meta does not have a dedicated support team to assist users facing account compromises. With so many people experiencing this issue daily, it’s alarming that their recovery process is not more accessible or efficient. After numerous failed attempts to recover my account through Meta’s standard procedures, I was fortunate enough to get in touch with a member of the Meta recovery department, @Rothsteincode on X (formerly Twitter), and via email at rothsteincode@gmail.com Their expertise and guidance were invaluable, and thanks to their assistance, I was able to regain full access to my account.
While I am incredibly grateful for their help, this experience has highlighted a major issue—Meta needs to implement better security measures and provide more reliable support for users dealing with these kinds of problems. The lack of direct customer support is unacceptable, considering how vital social media platforms have become for businesses and individuals alike.I wanted to share this with you in case you or anyone you know ever faces a similar issue. If you ever find yourself in this unfortunate situation, I highly recommend reaching out to @Rothsteincode for assistance. Hopefully, Meta will take action to improve their security policies and customer service in the near future.Thank you for taking the time to read this. Stay safe online, and let’s continue to support each other in this digital space.

A great history of a great yogi which I do enjoy reading , reading over it again and again. Jetsun Milarepa was a famous Tibetan siddha, known as a murderer when he was a young man. Who later turning to Buddhism and becoming a highly accomplished Buddhist disciple. Generally considered as one of Tibet’s most famous yogis and spiritual poets, whose teachings are known among several schools of Tibetan Buddhism. Milarepa’s story is one of struggle, anguish, resolve, and triumph all of which make him recognizably. Practicing these teachings for many years in isolated mountain retreats in caves such as caves hidden deep in the mountains of Tsum Valley. That’s where Milarepa attained enlightenment and gained fame for his incredible perseverance in practice and for his spontaneous songs of realisation. Milarepa is said to be the first to achieve the state of Vajradhara in one lifetime. That’s incredible.

The Unknown

The Known and unknown are both feared,
Known is being comfortable and stagnant,
The unknown may be growth and opportunities,
One shall never know if one fears the unknown more than the known.
Who says the unknown would be worse than the known?
But then again, the unknown is sometimes worse than the known. In the end nothing is known unless we endeavour,
So go pursue all the way with the unknown,
because all unknown with familiarity becomes the known.

Find one of the most beautiful temples in the world in Nara, Japan. It is the 1,267 year old Todai-ji temple that houses a 15 meter Buddha Vairocana statue who is a cosmic and timeless Buddha. Emperor Shomu who sponsored this beautiful temple eventually abdicated and ordained as a Buddhist monk. Very interesting history and story. What the meat industry figured out is that you don't need healthy animals to make a profit.
Sick animals are more profitable... farms calculate how close to death they can keep animals without killing them. That's the business model. How quickly they can be made to grow, how tightly they can be packed, how much or how little can they eat, how sick they can get without dying... We live in a world in which it's conventional to treat an animal like a block of wood. ~ Jonathan Safran Foer
