Dear Rinpoche, Good Morning ? I googled the web for this beautiful photo, the location of where the Buddha is standing is at ‘Husain Sagar’ lake, in India.

According to Wikipedia: “It is a lake in Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh, India, built by Hazrat Hussain Shah Wali in 1562, during the rule of Ibrahim Quli Qutb Shah. It was 5.7 square kilometres built on a tributary of the River Musi to meet the water and irrigation needs of the city. There is a large monolithic statue of the Gautam Buddha in the middle of the lake which was erected in 1992”.
[Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hussain_Sagar]

In another link named: Buddha Statue of Hyderabad. Hyderabad is the capital of the state of Andhra Pradesh. Between 1983 and 1989, N. T. Rama Rao served as the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh. During his tenure, he spent large sums to erect several statues of people from the region’s political and religious history. During his visit to New York, he saw the Statue of Liberty and was inspired by the efforts to restore it. He said “I wanted something like that… That would have been my contribution to society.” Rama Rao chose to depict Gautama Buddha because “he was a humanitarian who told the whole truth to the people. It is our pride.”

After a long search, he found a solid granite rock on a mountainside 40 miles outside Hyderabad. For over a year, hundreds of laborers helped the temple architect and builder S.M.Ganapathi Sthapati create the statue. After five years and the expenditure of US$3 million, the statue stood at 58 feet (18 m) and weighed 350 tons, making it the world’s tallest monolithic statue of the Buddha. A concrete platform measuring 15 feet (4.6 m), now referred to as the “Rock of Gibraltar,” was constructed in the middle of Hussain Sagar to aid in erecting the statue. The roads of the city were also widened for this purpose.

The government of Andhra Pradesh led by N. T. Rama Rao was ousted in 1989. By the next year, the statue was ready for erection. ABC Limited, a local company, was given the responsibility of transferring the statue onto the concrete platform. Using a trailer vehicle, the statue was brought to the shore of Hussain Sagar. On March 10, 1990, company workers shifted the statue on top of a barge. After traveling only 100 yards (91 m), the statue tipped and fell into the lake. After a two-year salvage operation, the statue was pulled out of the lake. On December 1, 1992, the statue was installed on the platform successfully. In 2006, the Dalai Lama consecrated the statue after performing a ritual.

It is very beautiful carved statue of Lord Buddha, and it makes it a whole lot more serene and peaceful in the centre of a calm and beautiful lake.

The Buddha Statue of Hyderabad is a monolith located in India. It is the world’s tallest monolith of Gautama Buddha, erected on Gibraltar Rock in the middle of Hussain Sagar Hussain Sagar Lake, located in the heart of Hyderabad. Absolutely amazing, architecture carved by 200 sculptors which took them about two years to complete. The statue was chiseled out from a white granite rock. The man behind the iconic monolithic statue is other than the famous sculptor and Indian architect Sattanatha Muthaiya Ganapathi Sthapathi. A magnificent view for one to see at night.

The vision and tenacity of one man, not to mention the resources to bring this statue of Buddha to the middle of this river. That this can happen in Hyderabad indicating the tolerance and understanding of the religions here, is indeed cause for rejoicing. What blessings to all and sundry in the vicinity!

Thank you, Rinpoche for sharing this photo and thank you, Frederick Law for researching the information.

Thank You for sharing the beautiful pictures of the Buddha statue with us Rinpoche. The statue looks stunning! I really love the picture of the statue with the sun setting behind it, the sun contras the statue. I wish that i’ll be able to visit the place next time.

This is indeed a wonderful statue. My favourite image is when the sun goes behind the statue’s head and forms a halo. It is so beautiful. I really love the fact that the statue was built as Lord Buddha was considered to be a humanitarian, which is extremely true. It is because of Lord Buddha that humans can benefit so much on a spiritual level.

  11. sweekeong on Feb 21, 2013 at 4:19 pm

This is so beautiful. Thank you Frederick for finding the background information of Buddha statue of Hyderabad and Rinpoche for posting it. 🙂 I especially like the second last picture where you can see the sun setting in the background on the right side of the Buddha statue. The whole feel is very mystic and ancient. Just as the teaching from Buddha, the Dharma has been in existence for a very long time. Countless Buddhas from the past have taught it and only now we have the chance to hear this ancient wisdom and thus be able to apply to our every day lives. This image also reminds me of the short span of human life. Countless life we have wale and breath as sentient beings and countless beings have become enlightened. Still we are not yet enlightened. The Dharma teachings we have the opportunity to listen to isn’t conveniently available as of now. It can be lost or simply become too deep for our intellectual capacity to comprehend in future.

Thank you Frederick for your research and the information. And thanks for Rinpoche sharing, so that we all get to know this beautiful statue in the world. I just can’t get my eyes on it, the Standing Buddha is sooooo beautiful. And the story behind so great. I like the founder – Rama Rao said : chose to depict Gautama Buddha because “he was a humanitarian who told the whole truth to the people. It is our pride.”..So true!!!

When we see the Buddha image, the dharma seeds will plant inside us and even one day we past away.. it still there. And when the Buddha Statue big enough it benefit more and more sentient beings by planting dharma seed inside, one day it might help us to close to 3 Jewels. Beautiful.

Hope one day we can visit this beautiful place and we have one in Malaysia. LOL ><

Buddha’s statue in day time and night time is so different. I like to see Buddha statue “floating” on sea…the statue reminds me of The Guanyin of the South Sea of Sanya, China.

It is said that, “According to Buddhist tradition, sacred objects such as statues provide a uniquely powerful means by which we can bring to mind, the positive attitudes that are essential to the development of loving kindness!! World focus, inspiration and Buddhist tradition, it seems are the reasons for the size of very large statues. The more notable a statue, the more people will hear of it and see it, the more they have the chance to benefit from it. An 18 meter high monolith statue of Lord Buddha towering over the Lake of the famous rock of Gibraltar, with additional beautification enhancements will certaninly look capitivating in its sight and awe of its splendour in its overall beauty! This would naturally draw large crowds of both pilgrims and tourists to its place – not mentioning the comforting peace and tranquility Buddha statues always created. Thanks for the sharing Federick and your hard work and concerted efforts which are appreciated greatly.

Gazing upon a Buddha statue such as Gautama Buddha or Shakyamuni is already very blessed. The effort to ensure such beautiful work of art to represent “peace” and for it to be located in such strategic location for all in Hyderabad and the world to gaze upon requires tremendous effort, resource and unwavering motivation.

Thanks to N. T. Rama Rao for making making the statue for the world to gaze upon and Frederick and Rinpoche to share it with us.

At first glance, I thought it is the statue of liberty. The stature its stunning! Thank you Faderick for sharing. The story of how this statue stood where it is now is no easy feat but now has benefited many as imprints would have been embedded in the minds of those who sees Buddha. From the selection of the rock to carving it to transporting to it location, from hauling it up from the lake are all obstacles from the people who will benefit from this Buddha statue. Now that it is up, the benefits are tremendous.

I would love to visit this place!

    Dear Frederick,

Thanks for spent time to research on these wonderful information and share it with us. It’s very nice of you to spent time on important thing, as for now 726 people have view this wonderful Buddha Statue of Hyderabad.
As we all have know that there’s are many benefit to install Buddha statue for ourselves or in the public, the bigger it is the more benefit will be.
A Buddha statue is a symbolic of an enlighten mind, which also represent aeons of virtue, by worshiping, praising, making offering, circumambulate to this enlighten mind, we created the cause for us to achieve the same free of suffering mind one day. This imprint will not be deleted, removed, but it will be stored in our mind even if we take away and take a new rebirth. When we take rebirth, and meet something related to Buddhism, it will trigger the imprint we collected in our past life, and we will have a chance to practice Buddhism again.
Based on this very reason, we can imagine the living creatures that live in the lake will collect tremendous imprint for their future life. You might said those fishes or prawns doesn’t even know they are circumambulate a Buddha statue, how will they gain an imprint?? Ex: We might not know what’s inside a stupa when we circumambulate it, but we still gain imprints and merits.
This is also one of the reason why Tsem Rinpoche always encourage us to have a Buddha statue for ourselves or others.

Attached is a link on Tsem Rinpoche talking about bringing a Buddha home:

I love India. I love it for the very simple fact that they are all so open to all forms of spirituality. They always have deep faith in the universal truth of all faiths and are very respectful of one another. However, that does not mean that they have less faith in their own faith. On the contrary and I like the fact that Hindus, Buddhists and Muslims live side by side.

Although there is tensions from the extremists but they are still generally more respectful of one another. I always hear and see inter-religious blessings and just total acceptance. That is the kind of world all of us want to live in or rather what I would like to see and live in. Instead of bombings, violence, desecration and putting each other’s religion down, it would be so nice to see the acceptance of each other’s faith. I guess the only way would be exposure, acceptance and having the right religious leaders in power that have true religion in their hearts to foster this kind of understanding.

India has always been such a spiritual country and the oldest religion also came from mother India. Their respect for all religion is so beautiful and we all know how Buddha is one of their great historical heritage sage hence it is no surprise but a rejoicing news to see and read this post. In fact having a big Buddha statue up and blessing so many beings and the country is far more greater than the statue of liberty who is just a symbolism but not a real enlightened being that can bless everyone.

I’m amazed how they took about 3 years to get it up and with so many obstacles to get it up on to its platform but their determination paid off.

This Buddha statue also have his right hand in the mudra of bestowing protection to all… a Buddha symbolizes peace and so many things positive and on top of that blesses anyone who gazed upon him… how meritorious and fortunate for the people in Hyderabad!

  42. Carmen K. on Jan 25, 2013 at 5:46 pm

Wow, what a beautiful statue, erected after much obstacles. Thanks for the great research, Frederick.

It is true, what they say. Looking at the peaceful demeanour of a Buddha statue, even just for a split second, brings much peace and calmness to one.

Imagine how many people who have been angry, and just at the sight of the serene Buddha in the middle of the lake, managed to calm down. What a great blessing it is, and how kind of Rama Rao to have commisioned this statue for the benefit of others.

  43. Lim Han Nee on Jan 25, 2013 at 5:17 pm

Thank you Rinpoche for sharing the lovely pictures of this magnificent statue (fifty-eight feet tall) of Lord Buddha standing in the middle of Hussain Sagar. There is the first picture showing the statue at night when the spot lights cast on it make it seem luminous and mysterious. Then there are the lovely silhouettes against the evening sky with the sun setting. The statue, in bright sunshine,in all its splendor, is as captivating.

The 200 sculptors who carved the statue out of white granite must have been in awe of it when it was finally completed.

All in all, there is so much peace and serenity reflected in the statue of Lord Buddha and its surroundings.

  44. Milly on Jan 25, 2013 at 5:10 pm

Thank you Frederick for the research. It is a beautiful and serene holy image carved from a huge granite rock. I hope that Rinpoche’s wish to see this Buddha will come true soon.

  45. Andrew Boon on Jan 25, 2013 at 4:57 pm

How serenely beautiful! How blessed that one can view this Buddha image from every vantage point of the city surrounding the lake. Money well spent for the city I say as this will stand the test of time as an iconic symbol. It will also add a commercial aspect as it will draw pilgrims and tourist alike plus on the spiritual level it will bless the city for as long as this image stand!

Brilliant foresight by N. T. Rama Rao. If only more leaders in the world would take this example of using taxpayers money in a viable manner!

  46. sarahyap on Jan 25, 2013 at 3:25 pm

    Great research Frederick!

The Buddha statue is so beautiful! It’s great to see such large Buddha statues in the middle of the lake. I can imagine it is no easy task to bring over such a huge statue to the center of the lake. Looking forward to see more Buddha statues build in the center of attraction so that many people can have the seed of Dharma planted in their mind stream.

  47. Paris on Jan 25, 2013 at 2:24 pm

Very beautiful indeed, and many thanks to Frederick for finding out more about this stunning image. I love India for its openness and acceptance of many faiths. It is incredible to see just how “easy” it is to have large religious images, icons and buildings everywhere in India, and that the local people are supportive of these sites. I think it’s wonderful that Hindus visit Buddhist sites, Buddhists join Hindu festivals and everyone has had an understanding and respect of each other’s faiths there for thousands of years. How inspiring it must be to be able to walk around a city as large as Hyderabad and see large statues like this emerging from the skyline amidst all the buildings – for this is how India itself is, there’s a beautiful spiritual faith at the heart of all that they are doing.

Thank you Rinpoche for sharing the beautiful photos and information with us.
Thank for Frederick Law for the research.

The photos are so beautiful and i love the one particular photo where the sun sets directly behind Buddha’s head ! These are photos that ‘reaches out’ to me and just seeing them , i’m so fortunate!
The history is also so amazing , all the obstacles that were placed in the statue’s path , the time, money and effort placed into erecting the statue shows the devotion and dedication that the Indian government and people have for Buddha.

I would truly love to be able to visit Husain Sagar one day.

This is a lovely statue in the middle of a lake. It is good that the then Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, Rama Rao, decided to Lord Buddha as the subject for the statue because he is considered a ‘humanitarian’.

I found a little additional information from http://wikimapia.org/590214/Hussain-Sagar:
An 18 meter high monolithic statue of Lord Buddha towers over the lake from atop the Rock of Gibraltar. The road on the Tank-Bund which originally was very narrow was widened in 1946 when Sir Mirza Ismail was the Prime Minister of Hyderabad. Further widening and beautification of the Tank-Bund took place during 1987-88 with the addition of fountains with dancing waters, tantalising coloured lighting during nights, and the installation of nearly thirty three (33) well sculptured bronze statues mounted on high platforms, in the memory of historical and eminent personalities of Andhra Pradesh. The idea of erecting a giant monolith Buddha statue in the midst of Hussainsagar lake on the Gibraltar rock was a part of the Buddha Poornima project in 1985. The monolithic statue was chiselled out of a white granite rock, weighting 450 tons. It was carved by 200 sculptors for two years. The statue was transported to Hyderabad in November 1988.After the initial problems, the statue was erected on 12 April 1992 on a red coloured Lotus pedestral. Attached to it, Lumbini park was inaugurated with musical fountains, Bonsai Plants and a boat ride from Lumbini Park to the Buddha Statue. The whole atmosphere reflects peace and persevence.

There’s also a short video of Hussain Sagar and the Buddha statue here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q0YaNf_RPeU, which shows the Buddha statue at night also. The video also shares that when the Buddha statue capsized in 1990, the accident took the lives of 6 people. The presenter says that “in this world of fashion and passion, Lord Buddha stands for compassion. Statue of Liberty stands for freedom, statue of Buddha stands for virtue and wisdom”.

Thank you Frederick for the initiative to search for the information and the statue is just stunning, especially when the sun set falls on the head of the Buddha, so beautiful !

Thank you Rinpoche for sharing these beautiful post and pictures .

Dear Rinpoche, i am happy that i was able to find the information on Buddha Statue of Hyderabad and share with Rinpoche and everyone of this wonderful Statue, that even myself were not even aware of it’s existence. Searching through really open my eyes about such a magnificent statue.

After getting to know the history of this beautiful place, i would really like to visit Husain Sagar one day as well and enjoy the serenity of the lake.

    I wish Rinpoche good health.

    Love,

    Frederick Law

Du Fu (712-770 AD), also known as Tu Fu, was a prominent Chinese poet of the Tang Dynasty, often considered one of the greatest alongside Li Bai. He was a poet-historian and a poet-sage, known for his realistic depictions of human suffering and reflections on the troubled times of his era. His poems, reflecting his personal experiences and the political instability of the time, have had a lasting impact on both Chinese and Japanese literary traditions.
    Interesting read.

H H Kyabje Pabongka Dechen Nyingpo is by far one of the most popular and influential Gelug religious figures of the 20th Century. One of Phabongkha’s most important aristocratic students, Lhalu Lhacham Yangdzom Tsering relationship to her teacher and his lineage teachings goes along way .She is famously remembered for is her unwavering devotion towards her guru, HH Kyabje Pabongka Rinpoche. Yangdzom Tsering’s Shatra family were ancient sponsors and students of the Gelug tradition and had apparently been patrons of Tsongkhapa the founder of the Gelug school. The life stories of Lady Lhalu Lhacham Yangdzom as mentioned by Joona Repo is indeed inspiring. How her life struggles with tragedies, and her devotion to dorje Shugden and the Gelug tradition throughout her life.

Looking at these pictures remained me of my first pilgrimage to Wu Tai San. With the blessings of our guru, we able to visit Wu Tai San a significant Buddhist pilgrimage site . In fact it never did come to my mind that I am fortunate given a chance to go as I am still very new then. Upon hearing about the pilgrimage I got myself register without much thought. The history and stories of Wu Tai San has inspired me to go there. Interesting the Emperors Kangxi and Qianlong of China are closely connected to WuTai San. Wu Tai San located in Shanxi Province, China renowned as the home of Lord Manjushri the bodhisattva of wisdom, with different emanations of the bodhisattva residing on each of the five peaks. The area is dotted with over 50 temples and monasteries, many of which are historical and architecturally significant. Those temples built over 7 dynasties housing numerous Buddhist relics. Wutai Shan also offers stunning scenery, including snow-capped peaks, forests, and streams. Wu Tai San is one of the four Sacred Buddhist mountains of China, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Wutai Shan was known to be a mystical and sacred site inhabited by divine spirits, accompanied by unusual events, such as miraculous light appearances at night.
We visited all the Holy sites, making offerings and doing prayers at each sites. We even have the opportunity to collect holy stones for future statue insertion or to keep on our altars. Times flies as our pilgrimage ended with so many stories to share with the rest.
Thank you Rinpoche and writes team sharing those pictures.

Padmasambhava, the Lotus-born Guru, also known as Guru Rinpoche is a legendary tantric Buddhist master who is widely revered in Tibetan Buddhism. He is seen as the second Buddha particularly within the Nyingma .He was a legendary Indian Buddhist mystic credited with introducing Vajrayana Buddhism to Tibet in the 8th century. As found in Buddhist scriptures Padmasambhava birth is often associated with legends and prophecies. Interesting…… Padmasambhava is depicted with eight manifestations, each reflecting a different aspect of his miraculous activities. Interesting article .

Milarepa Cave, situated high in the Himalayan mountain of Tibet, a sacred cave beckons pilgrims and spiritual seekers from across the globe. Milarepa Cave, a site of profound significance in Tibetan Buddhism, is merely a geological wonder. This sacred cave is also a living testament to the power of meditation and devotion. Its where an 11th-century yogi and poet who spent transformative years in solitary practice. Milarepa Cave graces Tibet’s rugged yet stunning landscapes, a region renowned for its deep spiritual heritage and breath-taking natural beauty. The cave’s importance is inseparable from a revered figure and the enduring legacy of Jetsun Milarepa a revered yogi and poet in Tibetan Buddhism. Milarepa Cave stands not just as a geological formation but as a powerful symbol of spiritual transformation and the enduring strength of Tibetan Buddhism. Reading this interesting cave had me Google for more information about this sacred cave. Numerous stories and legends surround Milarepa’s time in the cave, enhancing its mystical aura.

I wanted to take a moment to share a recent experience with you regarding my Instagram account. Unfortunately, my account was hacked, which was both frustrating and disappointing. Losing access to something that plays a significant role in my business and personal connections was incredibly stressful. What made the situation even more challenging was discovering that Meta does not have a dedicated support team to assist users facing account compromises. With so many people experiencing this issue daily, it’s alarming that their recovery process is not more accessible or efficient. After numerous failed attempts to recover my account through Meta’s standard procedures, I was fortunate enough to get in touch with a member of the Meta recovery department, @Rothsteincode on X (formerly Twitter), and via email at rothsteincode@gmail.com Their expertise and guidance were invaluable, and thanks to their assistance, I was able to regain full access to my account.
While I am incredibly grateful for their help, this experience has highlighted a major issue—Meta needs to implement better security measures and provide more reliable support for users dealing with these kinds of problems. The lack of direct customer support is unacceptable, considering how vital social media platforms have become for businesses and individuals alike.I wanted to share this with you in case you or anyone you know ever faces a similar issue. If you ever find yourself in this unfortunate situation, I highly recommend reaching out to @Rothsteincode for assistance. Hopefully, Meta will take action to improve their security policies and customer service in the near future.Thank you for taking the time to read this. Stay safe online, and let’s continue to support each other in this digital space.

A great history of a great yogi which I do enjoy reading , reading over it again and again. Jetsun Milarepa was a famous Tibetan siddha, known as a murderer when he was a young man. Who later turning to Buddhism and becoming a highly accomplished Buddhist disciple. Generally considered as one of Tibet’s most famous yogis and spiritual poets, whose teachings are known among several schools of Tibetan Buddhism. Milarepa’s story is one of struggle, anguish, resolve, and triumph all of which make him recognizably. Practicing these teachings for many years in isolated mountain retreats in caves such as caves hidden deep in the mountains of Tsum Valley. That’s where Milarepa attained enlightenment and gained fame for his incredible perseverance in practice and for his spontaneous songs of realisation. Milarepa is said to be the first to achieve the state of Vajradhara in one lifetime. That’s incredible.

Visiting Tibet, holy Gaden Monastery is everyone dream and a once life time. Of course if we have the means to visit again will be great. End of December 2008 and early January 2009 our Guru H E Tsem Rinpoche with a small group students visited Tibet. Thousands of pilgrims, visitors and tourists around the world have visited this incredible holy land for the last 600 years. Tsem Rinpoche visited Tibet for the first time with an oxygen tank. I am fortunate to visit this holy place with my Dharma brothers and sisters years back.
With our Guru blessing we went without any without any hitch. Visited most of the monasteries and could feel the powerful energies there. Looking at those pictures in this blog reminds me of trip there.

Interesting….. a ground breaking documentary by world BBC where everyone should watch. BBC did mentioned and documented that Jesus was a Buddhist monk and that he had spent some years in India. I would not know about this till I came across this blog. Many people most probably too. Interesting watch one should not miss. Jesus was a religious leader revered in Christianity, one of the world’s major religions. He is regarded by most Christians as the Incarnation of God. Historical evidence indicates that Jesus was well acquainted with Buddhism. Historical evidence indicates that Jesus knew about Buddhism. Other evidence, while perhaps apocryphal, indicates that he spent most of his so-called lost years outside Judea, possibly in Kashmir to study Buddhism exclusively.

The Great Buddhas of Bamiyan were two monumental Buddhist statues built around 600 CE. A holy site for Buddhists on the Silk Road, historically a caravan route linking the markets of China with those of the Western world. The two most prominent statues were the giant standing sculptures of the Buddhas .It was the site of several Buddhist monasteries where monks at the monasteries lived as hermits. It was until in 2001, both statues were destroyed by the Taliban . Before being blown up in 2001, they were the largest examples of standing Buddha carvings in the world .Buddhism was eliminated in Afghanistan by the 13th century during the Mongol conquests. Sadly all statues depicting humans in Afghanistan was destroyed. They were perhaps the most famous cultural landmarks of the region, and the site was listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Despite the Buddhas’s destruction, the ruins continue to be a popular culture landmark, where many locals, pilgrims and tourist visit the site.

The Unknown

The Known and unknown are both feared,
Known is being comfortable and stagnant,
The unknown may be growth and opportunities,
One shall never know if one fears the unknown more than the known.
Who says the unknown would be worse than the known?
But then again, the unknown is sometimes worse than the known. In the end nothing is known unless we endeavour,
So go pursue all the way with the unknown,
because all unknown with familiarity becomes the known.

What the meat industry figured out is that you don't need healthy animals to make a profit.
Sick animals are more profitable... farms calculate how close to death they can keep animals without killing them. That's the business model. How quickly they can be made to grow, how tightly they can be packed, how much or how little can they eat, how sick they can get without dying... We live in a world in which it's conventional to treat an animal like a block of wood. ~ Jonathan Safran Foer
