Question asked by Yan
Hello
9 years ago I was officially initiated into Chinese Buddhism Chan. With the time I become more attracted to Tibetan Buddhist Tradition.
I would like to ask if I have to again pass through Initiation (to take refuge in the Three Jewels) or I simply can “switch” my Buddhist practice and life into Tibetan Tradition?
Dear Yan,
If you have taken Refuge, in any Buddhist tradition, it is not necessary to re-take Refuge again if you start practicing another Tradition. However, many people do take Refuge again to re-affirm their faith, or to create a strong connection with their teacher.
However, since you have already taken Refuge under the Chan tradition, according to Buddhist practice, you must explain to the master that you took Refuge under that you are more drawn to Tibetan Buddhism and you would like to practice it.
Tibetan Buddhism stressed Guru Devotion, and as you have already taken Refuge you have made a connection with the mater that bestowed Refuge. If you are really sure that you want to practice Tibetan Buddhism, you should explain your reasons to the master that you took Refuge from. They may have some advice for you in order to proceed on your spiritual path. I hope this helps.
