Cindy Hew

Profile

Cindy finds Tibetan Buddhism compelling but the Tibetan language mind boggling given that she is somewhat linguistically challenged. Her belief that there has to be more to the purpose of life than to perpetuate DNA has culminated to her encountering H.E. Tsem Rinpoche’s teachings around 2014. Cindy has since decided to reorganise her priorities in life to include Dharma and is constantly reminding herself of that goal as she navigates her way in samsara.

Biography: The 4th Tagphu Pemavajra Jampel Tenpai Ngodrub

It would not be far-fetched to say that most influential Gelug lamas of today would consider H.H. Kyabje Pabongka Rinpoche as their direct teacher, or as their lineage teacher through his heart son H.H. Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche. However, in present times, few are aware of Pabongka Rinpoche’s teacher, His Holiness the 4th Tagphu Pemavajra...

The Intriguing Green Children of Woolpit

The Intriguing Green Children of Woolpit

(by Tsem Rinpoche and Cindy Hew) In current times, the phrase “little green men” brings to mind alien beings from outer space, reminiscent of the hype surrounding flying saucers during the turn of the 20th Century. The earliest linking of this phrase with extra-terrestrials can be traced to an article about a little green-skinned...

Creepy Tales of the Lizard Man

Creepy Tales of the Lizard Man

The mere mention of the Lizard Man conjures creepy images of mutant-like humanoid reptilians. Interestingly, despite possible disapproval from the grammar police, the term “Lizard Man” is used interchangeably to refer to a broad spectrum of bipedal hominid-like reptilian creatures (sometimes also referred to as “Homo-subterreptus) instead of just one specific cryptid. Thus, reported...

Which guru shall I choose? | 我应该选择哪一位上师?

We should follow our guru not because of his fame, rank, prestige, power or number of students he has or how big his organization is, but because he helped us to transform our minds to be a better person and we can see this within ourselves. This transformation is sacred. Because he gave us dharma from his heart and loved us.

Medicine Buddha Healing Fountain at Kechara Forest Retreat!

In order for KFR to truly become a place of healing, His Eminence the 25th Tsem Rinpoche has conceived a number of ideas including the newly-opened Medicine Buddha Healing Fountain. Embedded within the fountain are semi-precious stones that were especially consecrated by Dorje Shugden while in trance of the Panglung Oracle; His Holiness Trijang Chocktrul Rinpoche, widely accepted to be a living emanation of Vajrayogini; our own Tsem Rinpoche and His Eminence Gangchen Rinpoche, an emanation of Medicine Buddha himself. When the water runs over these stones, it becomes charged with the healing properties of the stones and imbued with its blessings.

Find out about the powerful healing benefits here: http://bit.ly/MedicineBuddhaFountain

The Kuan Yin statue in Macau at the Guan Yin Ecumenical Centre stands at 20 meters tall (65ft), and the lotus stands at 7m (23ft).

Known as the Buddha of Compassion, Kuan Yin is also known as Chenrezig in Tibetan or Avalokiteshvara (अवलोकितेश्वर) in Sanskrit. This depiction of Kuan Yin is very much similar to Virgin Mary.

It was sculptured by a famed Portuguese artist named Cristina Rocha, created in parts in Nanjing, and inaugurated by the Portuguese president Jorge Sampaio. The statue is clad in bronze and weighs approximately 50 tons.

The lotus is seated just off the island, and within the lotus is a quiet area for people to read up more on Kuan Yin, and perhaps even do some prayers.

As beautiful as Kuan Yin is, there is a powerful purpose behind Kuan Yin’s presence on the shores of this man-made island. Along with Virgin Mary and Tian Hou, Kuan Yin makes up the third virgin trio that maps this peaceful island. The divine trio symbolizes extreme compassion and mercy which also serves to foster tolerance between the cross-cultural attributes of the Portuguese and Chinese. It is for this reason, along with the Virgin Mary, that Kuan Yin stands as a symbol of religious and cultural harmony.

Although there are a minority of Chinese people that find this statue’s iconography a little difficult to accept, Kuan Yin is still visited and loved by all in Macau. This is due to the rich blend between European and Western cultures.

Nestled amid the rolling mountains, deep within the Larung Gar Valley, thousands of tiny wooden homes form one of the world’s largest Buddhist institutes.

The remote but sprawling settlement is found at elevations of 12,500ft and is home to over 40,000 monks, nuns and religious students.

It is located in the Larung Valley, Serthar County of Garze Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, in China.

It is said to have sprung up from a handful of settlers into the sprawling town that now occupies vast areas of hilly terrain.

At the focal point is a giant Buddhist monastery – the Serthar Buddhist Institute – with a huge wall separating the monks from the nuns.

The homes are predominantly made out of wood. Each one is built so close to the next that they all begin to merge into rows of homes.

In Buddhism, fasting is considered a method of purification. Theravadin monks fast everyday after 12pm till the next sunrise. The Tibetan Buddhist practice of Nyungne, which includes holding strict vows and fasting, has been gaining increased attention in Buddhist centers across North America. Fasting in Buddhism is to develop control of one’s attachments so the mind can be freed to develop higher awarenesses. Also fasting can be done so that one restricts from a pleasure (food) and dedicate it to someone sick, in need or dying. Basically to restrict one’s body from the normal food intake is to develop discipline, awarness, self control and even appreciation for all one has.

The Buddha’s spiritual awakening is related to fasting. The young prince Siddhartha left his palace in search of enlightenment and practised for six years under severe austerities and intense mental concentration that his beautiful body withered away to skin and bones. Towards the end of this period, he was surviving only on a single grain of rice a day. Buddha wanted to cut the attachment to the senses starting with excess indulgence in food and so on. This stage of Buddha’s practice is known as Fasting Buddha and the depictions in images or statues are usually called Emaciated or Fasting Buddha.

Hong Kong (CNN)Nestled in a tranquil hillside, Hong Kong’s newest Buddhist monastery features bulletproof VIP rooms and the world’s second tallest statue of the Goddess of Mercy — a Buddhist deity.

The monastery is funded entirely by Asia’s richest man, Li Ka-shing, who contributed $193 million from his personal foundation to the building project.

The premises, styled on Tang dynasty buildings, sprawl across a lush, green area of 500,000 square feet – around nine football fields.

It can accommodate up to 400 to 500 visitors daily, but will not be open to tour groups in order to preserve the sacred atmosphere.

Li initiated the project in 2003 to promote Buddhism in the city and construction took five years to complete.

Stunning sights, statues and bulletproof windows

At a height of 76 meters (250 feet), the Goddess of Mercy statue overlooks the site and a breathtaking view of Hong Kong’s harbor and several islands.

The monastery also features several grand halls, including one which houses three ornate 24-karat gold plated Buddhist statues, where people can meditate, and learn about Buddhism.

But perhaps the most intriguing feature is the bulletproof dormitory rooms.

One of the three dormitories that provide housing for visiting monks from all over world has built-in bulletproof windows to protect “important guests.”

“We installed the bulletproof glass windows because we hoped there could be a place to protect our important guests such as the Supreme Patriarch of Thailand and other top monks,” Walter Ngai Kai-shu, secretary general of the monastery told local media.

The rooms are still empty, and Ngai added that they were not designed for Li or any specific individual, reported the South China Morning Post.

Visitors are not allowed to bring joss sticks, meat, alcohol, or other food offerings in order to be environmentally friendly — instead the monastery will provide water.

“There are many other ways to offer the Buddha apart from joss sticks,” Ngai told local media.

Currently, a dozen monks, mainly from Hong Kong and Southeast Asia reside inside the monastery.

It will be open to the public on April 15, but registration and booking is now available online.

Vajrayogini is well known to have emanated within the Himalayan regions of Nepal, Tibet, Mongolia and even China. According to Buddha Shakyamuni, as years progressively become more distant from the time when the Buddha was alive, the “effectiveness” of the Tantras will diminish as the merits to uphold these teachings decrease. But for the Heruka and Vajrayogini tantras, it is the opposite. As we get further away from the time of the Buddha, our desires increase. Thus, the effectiveness of the Heruka and Vajrayogini tantras also increase as they use our desire as a tool to bring us to Enlightenment.

The Vajravarahi/Yogini Cave (Dorje Phagmo Cave) is located within the boundaries of Vajravarahi Hill (亥母山) in Liangzhou in Gansu Province, China. The origins of this cave dates back to the year 1004 AD. According to records, on the 25th day of the 1st lunar month, Vajravarahi reincarnated in human form together with her four other dakinis. These dakinis began to make tsog offerings and perform tantric rituals at the age of five in this sacred cave every 10th and 25th of the lunar month until they reached the age of eight. At that age, on the 25th day of the 12th lunar month, they ascended to Kechara Heaven.

Throughout the centuries, many high lamas of the Tibetan Buddhist order have visited this cave. For instance, in 1244, the great Tibetan sage, Sakya Pandita went to Liangzhou for a meeting with the officials of China and brought with him his younger sister, Drukpa Rangmo and his nephew, Chogyal Phagpa. At this sacred site of Vajravarahi, the entourage made extensive offerings and performed tsog. It was during this time that Drukpa Rangmo made a Dorje Phagmo statue from clay and enshrined the statue in this very cave. On another occasion, the 6th Dalai Lama on his way home from a pilgrimage to Wutaishan stayed in this cave for a long duration in retreat and prayer. To mark this occasion and also the sacred space of Vajravarahi, the 6th Dalai Lama erected a stupa made of clay in the cave.

Thank you for sharing with us more about Rinpoche. Rinpoche never wasted a minute in his life to help others. Everything Rinpoche did was to bring benefits to others, it was never for himself. Even though he had been hurt before, but he never inflicted pain on another person because he knew how hard it was. Rinpoche’s kindness was not limited to people who are closed to him or who knew him personally, his kindness was for every sentient beings, regardless. Even though Rinpoche is not with us anymore but he had left behind many precious teachings to benefit us.

A rare holy, sacred and precious picture of His Holiness 16th Karmapa with His Holiness Trijang Rinpoche tells a thousand words. Karmapa is Chenresik and Trijang Rinpoche is Vajra Yogini. In fact there is a mind blowing connections between the two enlightened and perfected beings. Wow…… HH 16th Karmapa and HH Trijang Rinpoche are both enlightened manifesting again and again for the benefit of others. Interesting read showing enlightenment has no borders no matter what tradition one comes from.

An awesome moment of respect. What a great example of wisdom to share with the world when two spiritual leaders meet. Both discussed various aspects of monastic life, all religions, despite their philosophical differences, convey similar messages of love and compassion. It is a great joy for them to foster inter-religious harmony. The Dalai Lama even presents Cardinal with a wonderful souvenir of a Buddha statue.
