I love the unknown, things that make you think, strange phenomenas, mysteries, mysterious creatures… and the likes.
There is a category of animals known as cryptids, or “hidden” animals whose existence have been suggested but unrecognized by science. A creature falls under the category of “cryptid” only if it meets certain criteria’s, such as: it must be big, weird, dangerous (or significant to humans in some way), and controversial.
Below is a list of ten “horrifying” cryptids… some have been caught on camera, while some are based on personal encounters. But how do we know which one really is “real”? What is our basis for saying whether something is real or not?? Do take a look and let me know what you think… let your imagination run wild…I thought this is interesting.
I am not trying to encourage anyone but I thougth it’s interesting to share. Which one would frighten you the most.

Ten Horrifying Creatures
[Extracted from The Listicles http://www.thelisticles.com/science-and-nature/terrifying-creatures/ ]
What is the most horrifying creature that you ever heard of? I have heard many stories of different mysterious creatures walking this very planet. These creatures are nothing a normal human mind could possibly accept and they naturally generate fear amongst us. We have seen many horrifying and scary looking creatures in different movies and we have read about them in different books. But the question is, do these creatures actually exist? Are there species of things unknown that walk the planet with us? There are stories that originate from ancient times and they have made it so far and this article is exactly about those stories and different sightings in various parts of the world. It’s an interesting read.
10. DOVER DEMON or The Rake
This creature was sighted twice in the town of Dover, Massachusetts between on the 20th and 22nd April in the year 1977. It is not certain whether ‘it’ is a creature or an alien. There are people who suggest this demon does not belong to this planet. It is reported to have had a large watermelon-like head, bright orange eyes, long and thin arms, hairless body and tan sandpaper-like skin. It is said that this demon had no nose, no eyes and no mouth and that it was three feet tall. It is not associated with any human killing yet.
9. JERSEY DEVIL
You can guess by the name where this creature can be found. Its story dates back to the 1800s. It is said that the creature can fly and has hooves. It has wings like that of a bat with a horse-like head. This monster is reported to have killed many farm animals including cows, goats and pigs. Jersey Devil has been reported by a lot of people living in New Jersey.
8. FLATWOODS MONSTER
The Flatwoods monster was first sighted in the vicinity of a large UFO that was spotted in the town of Flatwoods, Braxton County, West Virginia. The story dates back to 1952. The creature is reported to be massive (10 feet tall), glowing-red face, green body, and heart-shaped head. It is reported to be covered in some sort of dark clothing. At some instances it has been reported to have no arms, and others report it having short arms.
7. OWLMAN
The first Owlman reports started coming in 1976. This creature was spotted flying over Mawnan Church. Till 1978, Owlman was only reported to be seen around this church. It looks like an owl, is the size of a man, has pointed ears, red eyes and has black claws. There have been UFO sightings in the same area slightly after the sighting of Owlman. So, it is possible that the ‘Owlman’ is some kind of a messenger or a scout but who’s to say it even exists.
6. LIZARD MAN OF SCAPE ORE SWAMP
It is said that this particular creature dwells in the swamps of Lee County, South Carolina. It was first sighted in 1988 on the 29th June. It is said that the creature is seven feet and two inches tall with a strong build, green skin and red eyes. According to reports this ‘lizard man’ has three toes on each foot. The creature is said to rip into different passing-by cars and kill the victims. No reports of it eating humans have yet been made to our knowledge.
5. BUNYIP
People who grew up in Australasia will probably be familiar with this particular creature. It is said to lurk in swamps. It has a dog-like face, dark fur, horse-like tail and walrus-like horns. Following is newspaper cutting:
“The Bunyip, then, is represented as uniting the characteristics of a bird and of an alligator. It has a head resembling an emu, with a long bill, at the extremity of which is a transverse projection on each side, with serrated edges like the bone of the stingray. Its body and legs partake of the nature of the alligator. The hind legs are remarkably thick and strong, and the fore legs are much longer, but still of great strength. The extremities are furnished with long claws, but the blacks say its usual method of killing its prey is by hugging it to death. When in the water it swims like a frog, and when on shore it walks on its hind legs with its head erect, in which position it measures twelve or thirteen feet in height.”
4. SIGBIN
This creature originates from Philippines. It is said that the sigbin would come out at night to attack its victims and suck out their blood. It is also said that the creature walks backwards with its head between its hind legs (scary picture). The head resembles a hornless goat but it has large ears. It is also reported that this creature releases a bad oder. It has a long tail and grasshopper-like legs. I would definitely like to see one of these.
3. CANVEY ISLAND MONSTER
This is the monster whose carcass was seen on the shores of Canvey Island in England. The story dates back to 1954. Another carcass was discovered in 1955. It was described to be around 76 cm long with reddish-brown skin and bulging eyes. It is said that the creature had horse-shoe shaped feet with five toes and it had no ‘arms’. It is said that this creature was not dangerous to humans. The second specimen was almost the same except that it was 120 cm long.
2. POPE LICK MONSTER
This is another mix of goat and a human with a terribly deformed body. This creature has goat legs covered in fur, alabaster skin face, wide eyes and aquiline nose. It has horns and long greasy hair. There have been a large amount of sightings that match this description and various different reports of how it claims its victims. It is said that this creature uses hypnosis or voice-mimicry to lure the victims into its traps. Others just say that this monster jumps on the roofs of passing cars. It has a funny name though, don’t you think?
1. GOATMAN
This particular creature is mix of human and a goat. It is horned and hoofed. One look at this and you can very well relate it to Greek mythology but there are people who claim that it is more than just a mere myth, that it’s actually living and breathing creature. The first sighting of this monster was reported in 1957 in areas of Forestville and Upper Marlboro in Prince George’s county. Its sightings were reported in the year 1962 as well. It is reported that this ‘goatman’ would cut up its victims with a giant axe and would make ghastly sounds while doing it.

Yes there are many mysterious creatures everywhere this very planet. Its only that we don’t encounter before. Many mysterious creatures such as Owl man , ‘lizard man, Flatwoods monster may exist after-all. Many of them exist in the wild but scientist do not believed it exist by mainstream science. Reading this blog is an eye-opening for me. Just fantastic knowing such creatures do exist. Some of them looks scary to me like the Canvey island monster which had horse-shoe shaped feet with five toes and it had no ‘arms’. Even though its just a carcass seen on the shores of Canvey Island in England. Ferociously looking . Bunyip another creatures found in swamps which has a dog-like face, dark fur, horse-like tail and walrus-like horns. Interesting reading to know that there are some of the mysterious creatures .
Thank you Rinpoche for this sharing.
I’ve heard of Flatwoods Monster, Lizard Man and Goatman. There’s also a movie in Malaysia named Cicak-Man, a comedy though. Yes, the Pope Lick Monster does have a funny name while the characteristics detailing how Bunyip looks like sounds creepy to me.
With 10 fingers I raised up to the sky, surrending myself not wanting to meet ANY of them. No way?. Maybe in future when I’m more prepared (with the protection from Rinpoche, Yidam and Dorje Shugden) but in the meantime, please not. Thank you Rinpoche for this article that opens up my mind in knowing the existence of other creatures/sentient beings.
Excuse me I was wondering if have any ideas on the rake you see I am trying to find if there where any more sightings and if the Dover demon is truly the rake or if they are two separate creatures from what found the night be but since the look alike I have no idea.
In my opinion, the Goatman don’t exist. Because it sounds too much like the way it has been described in the Greek mythology. In Greek mythology, there is also a beast who is like how it was being described and it lives by the name “Minotaur”. Why do I believe that it doesn’t exist, because sounds to mythical to even exist an easier way to describe it, it is something like unicorns. Unicorns have been thought to exist but it doesn’t, just like Minotaurs, Centaurs and etc.
There are many creatures caught on Deer Cams and Trail Cams such as The Dover Demon/ The Rake, Jersey Devil and etc. I believe why there are still no proves of these creatures existence is because they are highly intelligent, knows how to run away without having being noticed by people, only come out during the night and very alert. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hBd2eTEPJj4 Like this video, the cameras caught these creatures moving around yet nobody have actually seen it in real life.
Is it just me or does anyone notice the picture of Sigbin looks kinda like a Kangaroo? Though the way how the witnesses described it is a lot scarier than the picture. Researchers have said that the amount of animals we have actually discovered is only about 25 percent out of a hundred. If that is the real case, then there must be a whole more bunch of beings waiting for us in the outside world.
Dear Rinpoche I was browsing through your blog and saw this particular blog post. From young I was very fascinated to aliens, ghosts, weird creatures, anything that is out of the world. I believe it all. I learned from a friend and a teacher, once told me that there are many universe that co exist with ours. Based on our karma and to some..attachments we may be reborn into that universe.
That was what he shared with me based on his own thoughts. I believed him not because I believed they do exist. Why..I can’t explain. I’m happy that besides dharma teachings, Rinpoche is interested in things that is out of the ordinary. You’re the first monk to make dharma interesting. From the bottom of my heart, I’m glad that I have accumulated the slightest merit to read your blog and to hear your teachings.
I will tell you what scares me – false prophets like yourself. People like you are the reason why I left Buddhism after 21 years. You with your talk about “the precarious, often tricky Guru-disciple relationship” and “all the political games that are played behind closed temple doors.” It is all code-talk for how you bilk people out of their money and their faith. You surround yourselves with gaggles of followers who, upon making a big enough donation to your “charitable” organization are, lo and behold! recognized as tulkus. You are all about the Richard Geres of the world and hippie liberal girls with ample breasts. You wouldn’t recognize a true servant of the Three Jewels if he was pissing on you because you are all about fame and glory and gain and loss. Buddha doesn’t know you. May you come to his hand someday. As for me, thanks to people like you I now prefer ultimate darkness and pain. At least Satan is honest about being a liar and a fake.
Dear Rinpoche, I don’t quite believe that Goatman exists. Because how would the witnesses knows what the Goatman does before slaying its prey and even if they have witness this then how do they explain that they are still alive after encountering the Goatman. The Goatman should have noticed them and hunt the witnesses down. Beside that, why would a wild creature have an axe?
Dear Rinpoche, I believe that these creatures do exist except for the Goatman because how did it got the axe? I would love to see all the ten creatures if they won’t harm me. If the scientists found all the creatures in the world, they will become one of the animals and there will be no more mysteries in the world anymore. Thank you for reading
Interesting creatures from the dark. They would fit nicely in the tv series Supernatural that I had been following for quite some time now. Karma can make many things manifest some beyond our wildest imaginations.
There are so many creatures unrecognized out there. We don’t see them doesn’t mean they don’t exist but we we see them we might confuse and scare with the figure.
But anyway there are living beings too just in a different and unique form.
Interesting to know something that is uncommon.
All of them are scary!
Just to add to the list, you might want to check out Maame Water http://www.amnh.org/exhibitions/mythiccreatures/water/mermaids.php
I came to know about Maame Water (Mami Water/Mommy Water) when I was in Ghana, Africa where witchcraft is practiced openly. Almost every village would have a warlock and his role is to use witchcraft to protect the people/crops/animals etc.
I’ve met a young girl who used to serve the Mami Water who rules from the ocean. She described to me how they enter the Mami Water’s world and the mischiefs done on others… the impression I got was that this spiritual world can be more real and more in control of the material world we know of.
Scary and creepy creatures. No, I don’t want to meet any of them.
A dear friend of mine that lives in the Southwest in Monument Valley in Four Corners on the Navajo Reservation. He is comes from a well respected lineage of Medicine Men and is being cursed and disturbed by what they call Skinwalkers which they use one of the most powerful form of witchcraft in the world. Due to the fact that he is a healer and inherited a beautiful land and Skinwalkers are usually a family member that is jealous. They use curses and shapeshift into animals to travel with the wind and fast speeds in the night and invoke the most EVIL forces known on earth to haunt the individuals such as my dear friend (Medicine Man) on a daily basis. They come on his land by his window and house and make the dogs bark histerically and they throw curses to make him ill using object that have been taken out of his body I guess they pratice vodoo on him. He has gathered a powerful Medicine Man and did a ceremony to try to stop them and he is still having those feelings of being cursed because witchcraft is practiced on the Navajo Reservation. This witchcraft has killed already a couple members of his family with their curses and they are trying to do the same to him I was wondering if there is anything that can be done to help him?
Some youtube videos on Skinwalkers:

I guess these are beings from the realm of the ghosts or even
a sort of an rare animal. And if a person has an karmic connection
to these beings, it is possible to see them.
For myself I saw in three different occasions and places such
beings, but for me it is impossible to say if these were aliens,
ghost or demons. The main point is, not to loose the bodhicitta
mindset in such en encounter.
All unknown creatures are scary. I hope I dont meet any of them. From the drawings, the goatman is the scariest.
I think the freakiest one is the Dover Demon – partially because there’s real images of him caught on film. He looks pretty nasty… he looks like the “creature” Rinpoche described during a walkies session a few years ago – the white man with the red eyes that Joey Wong purported to have seen hahaha… Well, I guess he does actually exist, eh?
Just been to the cinema to watch the latest spooky flick MAMA and scared myself silly – so it’s apt that I’ve just chanced upon this post again. Had quite an interesting discussion with a few friends about why spirits look the way they do – for example, in scary movies, why do the ghosties always look the way they did when they died? Their limbs all hanging off, their faces bloodied etc? Is it because that moment of dying was so traumatic that the imprints remained with them strongly and carried forward into their next “life” as a spirit?
Rinpoche has also explained that, like humans, spirits appear in all kinds of ways, mostly dictated by their karmas. It makes sense that ultimately, it is all dictated by our karmas, which manifest in all three forms of our body, speech and mind. If there are spiritual practices (such as making offerings) to make us physical attractive and charismatic in our future lives (or even within this life), then surely the converse must be true too. So actually, far from being scared of these beings, we should feel sad and empathise for them? For their karmas are so strong that their forms literally manifest into an appearance that makes beings not want to be near them, even if they are harmless (this applies not just to spirits but all beings across all realms).
I think all unknown creatures are scary including these illustrated here.
I have watched movies where some of these creatures were depicted with most of their similarities. Examples are: Jersey Devil, Owl Man, Lizard Man of Scape Ore Swamp, Pope Lick Monster (what a name!), and Goatman.
Of the ten horrifying creatures or “cryptids” in the blog, the “Rake” seems the most appropiate creature which has reality. This is based on actual confirmed personal encounters of which the sightings/reports look factual, but even with direct witnesses’ reports, there were no follow-ups investigations, nor is there any open publication nor TV news procasts on such intriquing phenomenas, supported by actual witnesses. There also complaints that police at first seemed helpful and local newspapers took keen interest, but story was never published and local TV news never followed up either. Its better to let a sleeping tiger lies, which I think they prefer.
scary creatures, there are many being out there, which in unknown to us and science. Science can’t prove them, but it doesn’t mean they don’t exist.
The rake looks the the character Gollum inside “Lord of the Ring”, very scary looking…
The Drawing look kinda cool, but if the real thing really stand in front of me or behind me, I wouldn’t dare to imagine how my reaction will be…
grotesque! many living beings remind me of monsters, but I had better not name names. LOL
I don’t wish to encounter any of them. Stay away please. I’d be mortified. We had an interesting discussion about fear arising from ego last Friday at Lamrim class. So I asked Pastor Ngeow, how does fear of ghosts arise out of ego? Then after several suggestions from the group we were led to dissect it further. We actually fear that ghosts will harm us, that we would suffer loss. So it is fear of loss. That the ghost would harm ME and inflict pain on ME, take something from ME and that I will lose something. The ultimate loss is actually our ego that we hold on to so strongly. Incidentally, we learnt a few weeks ago that one of the marks of a Buddha is fearlessness. It was an eye-opener.
Not one scare me at all 🙁
In Erie, Pa there is a cemetery that is at least 200 years old. It is a beautiful place, filled with huge tombs. One of these tombs is called the “vampire tomb”. It is covered with strange symbols, it radiates cold, and dogs and other animals go crazy around it.
There are often sightings of very large wolves in the cemetery, even though real wolves could not possibly be within the gates. People report feeling as if they are being watched.
Lights are often reported being seen very late at night.
I have been in this cemetery, and have felt very odd sensations. I carry a Namgyalma mantra with me, so I have never felt afraid – but I have definitely noticed a presence of some sort. I have decided to leave a Namgyalma mantra at the cemetery to help whatever beings may be suffering there.
I will report the results in the future.
Very scary testimony:

Interesting about THE RAKE:

From a Witness: 2006
“Three years ago, I had just returned from a trip from Niagara Falls with my family for the 4th of July. We were all very exhausted after a long day of driving, so my husband and I put the kids right to bed and called it a night.
At about 4am, I woke up thinking my husband had gotten up to use the restroom. I used the moment to steal back the sheets, only to wake him in the process. I appologized and told him I though he got out of bed. When he turned to face me, he gasped and pulled his feet up from the end of the bed so quickly his knee almost knocked me out of the bed. He then grabbed me and said nothing.
After adjusting to the dark for a half second, I was able to see what caused the strange reaction. At the foot of the bed, sitting and facing away from us, there was what appeared to be a naked man, or a large hairless dog of some sort. Its body position was disturbing and unnatural, as if it had been hit by a car or something. For some reason, I was not instantly frightened by it, but more concerned as to its condition. At this point I was somewhat under the assumption that we were supposed to help him.
My husband was peering over his arm and knee, tucked into the fetal position, occasionally glancing at me before returning to the creature.
In a flurry of motion, the creature scrambled around the side of the bed, and then crawled quickly in a flailing sort of motion right along the bed until it was less than a foot from my husband’s face. The creature was completely silent for about 30 seconds (or probably closer to 5, it just seemed like a while) just looking at my husband. The creature then placed its hand on his knee and ran into the hallway, leading to the kids’ rooms.I screamed and ran for the lightswitch, planning to stop him before he hurt my children. When I got to the hallway, the light from the bedroom was enough to see it crouching and hunched over about 20 feet away. He turned around and looked directly at me, covered in blood. I flipped the switch on the wall and saw my daughter Clara.
The creature ran down the stairs while my husband and I rushed to help our daughter. She was very badly injured and spoke only once more in her short life. She said “he is the Rake”.
My husband drove his car into a lake that night, while rushing our daughter to the hospital. They did not survive.
Being a small town, news got around pretty quickly. The police were helpful at first, and the local newspaper took a lot of interest as well. However, the story was never published and the local television news never followed up either.
For several months, my son Justin and I stayed in a hotel near my parent’s house. After we decided to return home, I began looking for answers myself. I eventually located a man in the next town over who had a similar story. We got in contact and began talking about our experiences. He knew of two other people in New York who had seen the creature we now referred to as the Rake.
It took the four of us about two solid years of hunting on the internet and writing letters to come up with a small collection of what we believe to be accounts of the Rake. None of them gave any details, history or follow up. One journal had an entry involving the creature in its first 3 pages, and never mentioned it again. A ship’s log explained nothing of the encounter, saying only that they were told to leave by the Rake. That was the last entry in the log.
There were, however, many instances where the creature’s visit was one of a series of visits with the same person. Multiple people also mentioned being spoken to, my daughter included. This led us to wonder if the Rake had visited any of us before our last encounter.
I set up a digital recorder near my bed and left it running all night, every night, for two weeks. I would tediously scan through the sounds of me rolling around in my bed each day when I woke up. By the end of the second week, I was quite used to the occasional sound of sleep while blurring through the recording at 8 times the normal speed. (This still took almost an hour every day)
On the first day of the third week, I thought I heard something different. What I found was a shrill voice. It was the Rake. I can’t listen to it long enough to even begin to transcribe it. I haven’t let anyone listen to it yet. All I know is that I’ve heard it before, and I now believe that it spoke when it was sitting in front of my husband. I don’t remember hearing anything at the time, but for some reason, the voice on the recorder immediately brings me back to that moment.
The thoughts that must have gone through my daughter’s head make me very upset.
I have not seen the Rake since he ruined my life, but I know that he has been in my room while I slept. I know and fear that one night I’ll wake up to see him staring at me.”

(The Dover Demon is also known as The Rake)
Even before reading the testimonials, I find the Dover Demon or the Rake the most scary… now after reading the testimonials… >.<
From Jeremy Foster on Facebook:
Rinpoche, the creature in this picture is also used to describe a being called The Rake. I know two people that have seen it. Once, it ran alongside my cousin’s girlfriend’s car, even though she tried to outrun it. Eventually it darted off into a field. She was very upset and very scared. Another of my friends saw it standing along side the road while we were driving home from work at night. It was near the same area where my cousins girlfriend saw it. We were both too scared to turn around and look as we drove by lol. Here is a link where you can find aditional stories about the Rake. http://creepypasta.wikia.com/wiki/The_Rake
Hmmm … the CANVEY ISLAND MONSTER seems to be a monkfish. Nothing special. But … really scary!
What scary creatures ! Interesting though , but i sure don’t wish to meet up with anyone of them – not even in my worst nightmares !
