Julian Volunteers!
Julian is Margaret Lee’s son. He’s an 14 year old school boy who decided to agree with his mother when she asked him if he wanted to help out at the ladrang during his Christmas holidays. We have lots of animals in the Ladrang and people come to volunteer to help take care of them.
On Tuesday, it was Julian’s first day! He came in and learnt how to clean the tortoise area at the ladrang. With him was Melissa Sin (Julia, Vice-President of Kechara Soup Kitchen, 14 year old daughter) who was cleaning the aviary. She comes in every weekend during her holidays to help out, and almost every other day she is seen in another Kechara department! Melissa loves animals and even went vegetarian already.
Joy was supervising Julian on the side and teaching him how to chant Medicine Buddha mantra or Manjushri mantra and blow onto Menla and Kadro our tortoises.
According to Joy and the other ladrang staff, Julian is a very, very pleasant boy. He is quite shy with people, but with animals he is very loving and caring towards them.
I’ve heard from the ladrang staff that he had tried to stroke Menlha’s shell, but was a bit shocked when Menlha turned his head around…Don’t worry Julien, the turtoise can’t move faster than you! Hehe
It’s good to see a young kid helping out around in a place where who he’s helping, the tortoises, cannot say their thanks back. It shows that he is doing it out of genuine care for the animals’ welfare. It is very good for young people to learn how to take care of animals. It teaches to focus out and another living being needs their help. It is important to develop caring attitude within our young people. Very important. Kechara has many depts in which young people can volunteer and help in.
Kids who learn early to care for others starting with animals grow up to be much more caring, sensitive and able to recognize what others need. I am happy to see Julian volunteering. It is very good for him.

He came in again the next day! Here he is again, preparing fresh cucumbers, cabbage and carrots, for Kadro and Menhla our forest tortoises.
A fresh diet daily of fruits and vegetables, they can get picky, but there is plenty of variety here in Malaysia.

Here he is with Joy (right), learning how keeping the birds food / water trays clean helps keep the birds from falling sick.

Melissa and Julian cleaning the enclosure, changing the pool water, and checking the tortoise poop for any signs disease.
Julian is really a natural with animals and they love him too! After cleaning the aviary, Julian was rewarded with the conures accepting food from him which made Julian very happy.
Here he is posing with Tsem Ladrangs friendliest conure hehe right on his shoulder…. They easily put a smile on anyones face!
Good kids, tidying up after themselves!

Dear Rinpoche, I didn’t knew that Julian loves animals too. When Julian was younger, he was kind of a jerk to me and my sister and I don’t really like him but now I don’t think that he is a jerk anymore, he is more respectful and caring to others sentient beings now. He is so much better than he used too, I like him better. Julian is a good friend and a good boy.
