Question asked by Pat
Greetings,
I know this may be beyond the subject of this forum but I wanted to ask if the Sambhogakaya (glorious body) phenomena is real and could it be proven scientifically?
Some websites show pictures of miniaturized corpses of lamas envelopped in clothes and kept as relics. Also I can only compare this to the gospel story about Jesus, he died but no corpse was found and then they say he resurrected or transformed into a glorious body that could pass through walls, could eat and be touched, etc. Also the image that appear in the Shroud of Turin that was supposedly found in his tomb could have been made by light radiation.
It fits perfectly the Sambhogakaya phenomena.
Dear Pat,
Thanks for your interesting question. This rainbow body phenomenon is not uncommon in Buddhism and it has been confirmed by many masters, so I believe it must be real. And I also believe it is an universal phenomenon which is not restricted to Buddhism only, but related to spiritual attainment. However I don’t remember there is any scientific conclusion about this phenomena even though there’s a medical research on it. It could due to the nature of scientific research which requires for the reproducibility of the experiment. The basic principle of any scientific research is that, “for any research program, an independent researcher should be able to replicate the experiment, under the same conditions, and achieve the same results.”
