Question asked by Dewa Zangpo
Homage to the thus gone ones. I am a 24 year old who is facinated by the ways of Shakyamuni. It is ever so relevant in this age.
But i have this doubt on Sexual Misconduct. What does it actually mean? I know the sangha has to abide by the law of celibacy but for us laymen what does it mean when they say to refrain from sexual misondduct? Thank you
Dear Dewa Zangpo,
For laymen, sexual misconduct or “wrong sensual indulgence” is karmically harmful behavior which also means engaging in sexual activities that might be harmful to others or ourselves. Therefore, to abstain from sexual misconduct means to not have sex with a non-consenting individual (as in rape, coercion, or fraud) or consensual sex with anyone under protection. This means any dependent supported by parents, guardians, the community, state, or a spouse or fiancee.
“Sexual misconduct” is actually a broad term, and it’s subject to culture and customs, therefore I shall say the basis is not to cause harm, hurtful feelings to anyone when engaging in the said activities.
