Dear students and friends,

Many may know one of my students, Wai Meng, from his online interactions. Wai Meng is a long time student of mine, and he has a strong passion towards environmental conservation… In 2010, he started an initiative within the Kechara organzation called the Kechara Earth Project (KEP).

Recently, I received news from Wai Meng that KEP made contact with ‘Clean the World‘, a non-profit organization based in Florida. Clean the World recycles soap and shampoo products discarded by the hotel industry, and redistributes them to those in need. This way they improve the quality of life of the destitute through hygiene, as well as help the environment by reusing items that would have ended up in landfills around the world.

Clean the World kindly donated 27,000 bars of recycled soap to KEP for it to be distributed to the under privileged around Malaysia.

I’m glad that KEP has arranged to receive these soaps from Clean The World, as the benefits is two folds: it saves the environment, and saves lives through improved hygiene. Hygiene is a very necessary component for keeping illness and diseases at bay. I’m sharing a message sent to me by Wai Meng below, informing me about the soaps that he has received and how it will be re-distributed to the under-privileged, old folks, orphanages, natives and disabled people around Malaysia.

It is wonderful to see the many NGOs and activists receiving these soaps to be distributed to the people they service. I hope to see more initiatives such as this, as it brings great joy to me to see many people benefiting from KEP’s dedicated efforts.

A Message From Wai Meng, founder of Kechara Earth Project (KEP)

 27,000 Recycled Soaps!

Dear Rinpoche,

Good evening, hope this finds you well. I have recently imported 27,000 bars of recycled soap from Hong Kong from this organisation called ‘Clean the World’.

‘Clean the World’ started in the USA and then started a branch in Hong Kong, what they do is they collect soap from the hotels and they recycle them into new soaps and they donate it to homeless, third world countries, poor etc etc. I have heard that Hilton Singapore they work with DHL and send all their partially used soaps to Hong Kong as part of their Community Service Responsibility.

‘Clean the World’ (CTW) is a social enterprise, that the social part of their work is to provide soap for people to keep their hygiene and hence their health, it is an enterprise as their work gets a monetary support from the corporates. We rejoice to Clean the World because of their generosity to use their resources to make this recycle soaps and subsequently donated to the NGO and activists through Kechara Earth Project. This recycling project should be continued so that there will be no waste soup and at the same time it help many unfortunate groups to improve their cleanliness and hygiene.

The effort from Kechara Earth Project, sponsors and volunteers are also highly appreciated. Because without them, the NGO and activists from Malaysia may not able to enjoy this benefit.

  3. Lin Mun on Oct 2, 2016 at 5:44 pm

Thanks for sharing Wai Meng. Glad to know that big corporation like Hilton hotel and DHL are working together with Clean The World in reproducing the recycle soap.

We should not bring more wastage that will eventually harm the environment. Hopefully this action will bring more awareness to more people and corporate world to participate in this good act.

  4. Edward Ooi on Apr 27, 2015 at 1:19 am

What an awesome way to recycle soap. Not a lot of people would thought of it but we actually waste a lot of soap especially when we are at the hotels. Why? Because normally we would only use them partially or try to use all of them during that short period of time. Why do I say that it is a waste it’s because there are a lot of people around the world who are poor, homeless and most of them can’t even afford to buy toiletries. Some people even recycle the tip of the soda can to make prosthetic legs for the ones in need. I think pretty much every on earth is recyclable, it is only up to us whether we want to or not. So start recycling and make the earth a better place!!!

  5. Phng Keng Hwa on Mar 12, 2015 at 11:09 pm

So good to see that there are people benefiting from this! 😀 May people around the world continue to donate for the betterment of others. 🙂 many thanks and congrats to everyone that was part of this project. _/|\_

Gosh that first picture clearly summarises where all our trash ends up! Unfortunately it’s ending up as a hazard to our environment. Plastic is not biodegradable and it ends up in our lakes and oceans being awkward and harming aquatic life too. There’s something called microbeads which can be found in exfoliating products / cleansers which are like plastic pellets. Since when did plastic start become a cleaning agent!? There is this great blog called trashisfortossers.com where this woman and many others in the world are following a zero waste lifestyle. This lady has cut out all unnecessary waste like plastic and over the last two years she has produced trash which can fit in a maison jar – there’s still a bit of space left!! Totally hipster lifestyle i know but if it saves damage to the planet then why not? Well done on this though Wai Meng and team.

  7. Low KHJB on Mar 1, 2015 at 1:55 am

Thank you Rinpoche for the sharing.Wai Meng commitment towards environmental preservation and helping the needy should be applauded.
To many a simple bar of soap is a simple thing to acquire. For some,a simple bar of soap could be deemed as a luxury item.
For Wai Meng and his team to make it available to those in need at those far to reach places are truly remarkable.
May Wai Meng activities succeed in planting a positive seed in the society mind in order to gain public awareness and react in a positive manner to save mother earth. At the same time built a caring society.
Keep it up Wai Meng and your team….

  8. Sean Wang on Feb 26, 2015 at 5:50 pm

This “Clean the World” truly does clean the world. It is amazing how far people are willing to go to help others. It is lovely to hear that all this soap is recycled and going to help people. Many people will be benefitted from this project. I am really happy for Wai Meng as he is able and does carry out so many selfless activities.

I think that this idea is a really effective means of helping others as it doesn’t only help people get cleaner and less susceptible to disease, it also helps planet Earth as there isn’t a whole load of soapy waste being dumped in the ocean.

  9. Cynthia Lee on Feb 26, 2015 at 1:05 am

Thank you Wai Meng and team for the wondrous effort and initiative. I can now rest in peace knowing that unused/leftover soaps can be recycled and distributed to those who can’t even afford basic necessities. We humans takes things for granted while the trash in the world is piling up and a single waste takes decades to decompose.

  10. Edward Ooi on Feb 25, 2015 at 11:48 pm

After reading this article, I now wonder what actually happen to all the bar soaps and bottle shampoos that the customer doesn’t finished using them? It is a very very smart thing to do, recycle the bar soaps and shampoos can save money, lessen the soap bars and shampoos that are supposed to be thrown away, it is very hygienic and we can put it into a good cost. There are a lots people suffering because they have no money to buy anything that they really need, and just water is not enough to clean your body properly. We need soaps and shampoos to kill the germs that we have on our body, and because some people don’t have enough money to buy these things, they ended up having rashes and disease on their body. I believe that these 27,000 bar soaps and shampoos are able to help the poor people who are in need.

  12. Pastor Jean Ai on Feb 25, 2015 at 6:12 am

Oh wooooooooow. What unexpected, pleasant, happy news to hear! Wai Meng, I’m completely and utterly stunned by this, and the creativity of the help you can provide. Amazing job!!!

    • Wan Wai Meng on Feb 25, 2015 at 9:41 pm

What I thought was so clever by you PJA, was that you came up with the idea of distributing masks during the haze and got young people and Rinpoche involved. So I have been looking for a clever idea ever since, anyways I’m happy this action reached the ‘crever’ stage. I never forgot that and aspired to be as clever as PJA 🙂 . Anyhow I do hope i can bring in 90,000 bars of recycled soap next round to distribute, this time no sponsor for shipping from HK.

Anyways if u can think of something else to do in tandem with the distribution of recycled soaps let me know you always have very good ideas, would always be good to let Malaysians know that Kecharians do care a lot about other Malaysians :).

  13. Judy Chen on Feb 25, 2015 at 6:00 am

    Dear Rinpoche,

Thank you for the sharing. Great news, Wai Meng. I admire your determination and selfless work since the last you shared this with me.

Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this wonderful news on the blog. Rejoice and thank you for brother Wai Meng and his team for successfully coordinating and distributing the 27000 recycled soaps to many less fortunate people who needs more help in order to keep themselves hygienic. Through this meritorious activity, the unfinished soaps can be recycled to save the environment from getting unnecessary pollution. This is another good cause to save the environment besides carrying out the conventional way of recycling activities.

  15. Lew Kwan Leng on Feb 24, 2015 at 11:18 pm

It is such fabulous news for the under privileged people in Malaysia. Thank you “Clean the World” for creating the effort to collect unused soaps in all the hotels, and thank you Wai Meng to make the effort in contacting “Clean the World”. There are many Malaysian who are not so fortunate and they need a helping hand to give them a lift in difficult moments.

Interesting article …..Professor Reginald Ray shares about the importance and impact rituals mainly for westerners or non believer or non Buddhist. For many Westerners , they tend to view unseen beings as superstition . I do believe of that unseen beings do exist. They are always around us and we should keep in mind that as long as we do not disturb them , respect them they will do no harm in return. Ritual is a way of communicating with beings who really are out there . In Tibetan Buddhism, ritual is used in relation both to the seen and the unseen worlds. Buddhism is a path of mind transformation., meditation, visualization and so forth.
Professor Reginald Ray explained a very deep insight of Tibet Buddhism , the traditional Tibetans and Western cultures.
Well I have still lot more to learn from this post and I will read again to understand better.
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this sums up the core concepts of Tibetan Buddhism.

Malaysia is a multi-racial, multi-religion and multi-cultural country. However, everyone here lives in harmony and respects each other’s differences. All of us celebrate the festivals together.
There are many festivals of different cultures being celebrated in Malaysia. For examples, the Indian festival Thaipusam, Chinese New Year, Muslim Hari Raya, to name a few.

The more we are developed and advanced, the more we are exposed to harmful elements. For examples, the radiation from the technology devices, dust, carbon monoxide, chemicals found in the household products, etc. Fortunately, there are ways to get rid of these harmful elements naturally without using chemicals. Plants like English Ivy, Bamboo Palm, Ficus and many more are good to purify our living environment. Some of then can be put indoor, some are planted outdoor. These plants are ideal to green up our environment and at the same time serve as a purifier.

This is a great news! New Zealand has officially made it illegal to use animals in research and testing, people who are involved in animal cruelty cases will be prosecuted. This new law is passed on the basis that animals can experience positive and negative emotions too. Even though animals can’t talk but they can feel the pain, they have fear in them too.

    Praise to Avalokitesvara (Chenrezig)

This is the famous praise to Avalokitesvara (Chenrezig) written by the realised Nun Palmo who attained Buddhahood and cured herself of leprosy through her austere practices based on Avalokitesvara and Nyung Nay (fasting retreat). This prayer is filled with great blessings. Below that is the long dharani (mantra) of Avalokitesvara which is good to do. Basically there are four things that happens for a person who practises this mantra constantly:

    1. At time of death, one will behold Buddhas
    2. One will not take rebirth into three lower realms
    3. Accidental death or premature death
    4. After death, will be reborn in Amitabha’s pureland

    Begin:

    NAMO MAN-JU-SHRI-YE NAMO SU-SHRI-YE NAMO UT-TA-MA SHRI-YE SOHA

OM JIG TEN GON PO LA CHAG TSAL LO
I bow to the Protector of the world.

JIG TEN LA MA SRID PA SUM GYI TO PA PO
Everyone in the three world praises and celebrate the Lama.

LHA YI TSO WO DUD DANG TSHANG PAY TOD PA PO
Even the gods and Brahma celebrate and praise Lord Chenrezig

THUB PAY GYAL CHOG TOD PAY DRUB PAR DZAD PA PO
One who wishes to attain buddhahood praises the lord who delivers such accomplisment.

JIG TEN SUM GYI GON PO CHOG LA CHAG TSAL LO
I bow to the supreme protector of the three world.

DE SHEG PAG ME KU TE KU ZANG DZIN PA PO
Holder of a noble form body, filled with infinite tathagathas,

DE SHEG NANG WA THA YE U GYAN DZIN PA PO
You are crowned by Buddha Amitabha.

CHAG YE CHOG JIN YI DOG TRE KOM SEL WA PO
    Your supremely bountiful right hand dispels the suffering of pretas;

CHAG YON SER GYI PAD MAY NAM PAR GYAN PA PO
Your left hand hold a golden lotus.

DRI ZHIM RAL PAY THRENG WA MAR SER KHYUG PA PO
Your sweetly scented red and yellow hair sparkles like necklaces.

ZHAL RAY GYE PA DA WA TA BUR DZE PA PO
The expanse of your face is lovely as full moon.

CHEN GYI PAD MA CHOG TU ZANG ZHING YANG PA PO
Like the sublimely supreme lotus, your eyes are beautifully wide.

KHA WA DUNG TAR NAM KAR DRI NGAD DAN PA PO
Your sweet-smelling form is like a snow-white conch shell.

DRI MED OD CHAG MU TIG TSHOM BU DZIN PA PO
You hold a mala of stainless, glowing pearls,

DZE PAY OD ZER KYA RENG MAR PO GYAN PA PO

In Tibetan Buddhism, Dharma protector practice is very common in different lineages. A very unique thing in Tibetan Buddhism is the oracle tradition. An oracle is able to take trance of a Dharma protector and give advice to us. If you don’t have the opportunity to meet the oracle, you can go to Kechara Forest Retreat to pay homage to the world’s first Dorje Shugden oracle statue.

H.E Tsem Rinpoche is very creative, knowing everyone has a different preference and are from different culture background Rinpoche has commissioned paintings of Dorje Shugden depicted in different cultures. Tsem Rinpoche is so generous, he put all these paintings online for us to download for free. Which one is your favourite?

Interesting short life story of Machik Labdron , fortunate to come across this article. I did google more of her to understand better. Machik Labdron was a renowned 11th-century Tibetan tantric Buddhist practitioner. It seem that she is considered to be both a dakini and a deity an emanation of Prajnaparamita . Historically, she was an outstanding teacher, and a founder of a unique transmission lineages of the Vajrayana practice of Chöd In one of a rare paintings in nineteenth century did depicts Machik Labdron with tantric deities and mahasiddhas…….very beautiful painting.
Thank you Rinpoche for this sharing.

Great news HH Dalai have sent an envoy to visit China to negotiate a visit of the Dalai Lama to China and eventually Tibet. Well there could be a political change if its true about it. ‘The Tribune’ published that His Holiness is planning a private trip to China after Samdhong Rinpoche visited China then. Since 1959, HH Dalai lama left Tibet, he did mention that he would like to return and so as many of Tibetans in exile living in India , Nepal and else where. Millions of Tibetans in Tibet too would wish to see His Holiness.Hope more good news will follow if its true that His Holiness visit to China materialised. What ever the outcome this is really a historical event which everyone looking forward to it.
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this great news.

Thank you Pastor Adeline and the writers team for this well written research on Nechung. Nechung is bound under oath by Guru Rinpoche and committed to protect the Tibetan Buddhism. It ‘s a extensive knowledge to understand the details between an unenlightened dharma protector and enlightened dharma protector . Some knowledge to know for sure of the differences between Nechung and Dorje Shugden. Nechung have continued to serve H.H Dalai Lama and the Tibetan even till this day. Reading this details write up will definitely help to clear all the misunderstanding and doubts for many of us, regarding of the unnecessary ban of the practice of Dorje Shugden. The ban has brought so much sufferings to many practitioners around the world.
May the ban be lifted soon so that there will be unity and harmony .

It is truly sad to know in this time of age, self-immolations are still happening . Tibetans have engaged in self-immolation, setting their bodies alight, in protesting against their desperation . Since 2009 , there have been more than 150 self-immolations reported in Tibet and else where like in India and Nepal. Most of the protesters have been monks and nuns, or ex-monks.
Its wonderful that Tsem Rinpoche have spoken up strongly against it. Like wise the Tibetan leadership continues stay silent on these issue at least to discourage such acts of self-harm. They the Tibetan Leadership should be the one to discourage this self – immolations, speaking up on behalf of the people welfare. Nothing has been done for the past 60 years since in exile .
Reuters did a good job by publishing an article in which Rinpoche had talked about his thoughts towards self-immolation. And even gave some suggestions to deal with self harm in the society. In the mean time hopefully HH Dalai will also speak up and do more to stop it before its getting worse so as the Tibetan Leadership.
Thank you Rinpoche for speaking up for the people in Tibet.

If you think the Dorje Shugden ban only affects the Tibetans outside of Tibet, you are wrong. The ban not only creates disharmony and disunity among the Tibetans in exile, it also creates a negative impact in Tibet. Many Tibetans in Tibet are also segregating and discriminating the Dorje Shugden practitioners under the influence of the CTA, and it is a threat to the harmony in the community. To prevent social conflict, the local government in Markham province, China (Tibet), has issued a public notice to crack down people who are using Dorje Shugden to create issues in the community.

The Unknown

The Known and unknown are both feared,
Known is being comfortable and stagnant,
The unknown may be growth and opportunities,
One shall never know if one fears the unknown more than the known.
Who says the unknown would be worse than the known?
But then again, the unknown is sometimes worse than the known. In the end nothing is known unless we endeavour,
So go pursue all the way with the unknown,
because all unknown with familiarity becomes the known.

This Lord met up with Dorje Shugden via the oracle. He devotes a chapter in his book about this oracle and encounter.

Stunning photo of offerings on my shrine photographed by Victor Choi. The lighting is beautiful. Offerings of food, fruits, drinks, flowers and incense are made on my shrine daily. For me the shrine is a portal to the Enlightened Beings and connecting to their blessings. Blessings to accomplish positive things in my life for others and myself. We do need this connection very much in our unpredictable lives where can experience so much anxiety, pain and a feeling of senselessness. We should never lose our connection to the Enlightened Beings and be firm about it. We will eventually need them no matter how \'good\' things seem now. Today this photograph taken is beautiful and I wanted to share it.

May everyone who visit my page here be blessed, your obstacles cleared, be healthy and have a long life.~Tsem Rinpoche

We have to discipline ourselves in order that our mind can allow the Buddha Dharma to take root. When it takes root, our lives will change for the better. What we perceive in the world around us is dependent on the attitude within us. Never give up improving on ourselves because that is the true road to peace and happiness. We are worth it. Others are worth seeing us in our best.~ Tsem Rinpoche

    Yudroma takes trance at Gyuto
In Dharamsala there is a famous oracle to the Goddess Yudroma. She is the protector of Gyuto Tantric Monastic College. Many monks consult her for guidance. Here she is attending a puja session at Gyuto Tantric Monastic College where she is pleased with the people helping the monastery and takes trance spontaneously to express this. Tsem Rinpoche

What the meat industry figured out is that you don't need healthy animals to make a profit.
Sick animals are more profitable... farms calculate how close to death they can keep animals without killing them. That's the business model. How quickly they can be made to grow, how tightly they can be packed, how much or how little can they eat, how sick they can get without dying... We live in a world in which it's conventional to treat an animal like a block of wood. ~ Jonathan Safran Foer

Precious opportunity in Kechara Forest Retreat! We have many outdoor sacred images of various Buddhas. The ones that were visited were Tsongkapa, Nageshvaraja, Loma Gyoma, Tara, Nagarakshasa and then back to Tsongkapa. At each location circumambulations and lamp offerings were done. We walked the vast land while chanting Migtseyma mantras. The very elderly followed to each location in cars. Kechara Forest retreat is 70 acres of land located in rural Bentong, one hour from the capital city of Kuala Lumpur. ~Tsem Rinpoche For more information: www.tsemrinpoche.com
