The following story was received on our paranormal story submission page.
Remember Steven Wong and his story about his experience in Kelantan? Here’s another story detailing his encounter with a weird occurrence back in the 80’s while he was studying in England.
His story is fascinating because it was a whole scenario that he experienced and not just the occasional shadowy figures that appear and then go.
What do you make of this story? Do you think it was simply just a dream, an illusion, or was it real?
You read and decide for yourself… then share with me what you think it is.

Story No.2 – Strange Experience in University
In the late 80’s, I was a university student in Essex, England. I was living in a student hostel on the university grounds. The hostel was a high-rise building. Every floor housed 14 students, with rooms located along two stretches of corridors separated by the kitchen and common hall in the middle.
During the winter break in my second year, there were only two of us left in the hostel as the other students had either gone back home for Christmas, or away for the break. My friend, Thomas, and I decided to stay put to finish our course assignment.
Thomas, who is also from Malaysia, had a room next to mine. I was in the last room along the corridor, and the fire exit was just beside my room.
One afternoon after lunch at the cafeteria, Thomas and I returned to our hostel. The hostel was very quiet with just the two of us. It was a welcome change as the place is usually noisy with everyone around.
I decided to take a short nap before resuming work. As I lay on my bed, I could hear Thomas going about his things and the music playing from the radio in his room.
Shortly after, I was almost falling asleep when I heard someone knocking on the door of the room at the far end of the corridor, calling out that he was the maintenance officer coming to check on the windows. I could clearly hear him proceeding to knock on every door, and calling out the same thing. He did not get any response as the other rooms were empty, except for Thomas’ and mine. I did not think much about it, and continued to lie in bed.
Before long, the man reached Thomas’ room. He knocked, and I heard Thomas open the door, letting him in. I could hear him moving about doing what he was supposed to do. Not long after, I heard him leaving Thomas’ room, and was expecting him to knock on my door.
When he knocked on my door, I called out to him to come in as my door was not locked. He opened the door, and I saw a blond man wearing green overalls coming in saying he wanted to check the windows. I motioned to him to continue, and he walked towards my bed as the window was located next to where my bed was placed.
Since I was tired, I didn’t get up and he leaned over my bed to reach across and inspect the window. He said the window was in order, and left my room closing the door behind him. I heard him leaving through the fire exit beside my room.
After he left, it occurred to me that it was strange he managed to enter our hostel as the occupants were the only ones with access. Even the cleaners had no access, and had to rely on us to allow them in. With that thought, I decided to go over to Thomas to enquire whether his place was in order, and his opinion on the matter.
When I entered Thomas’ room, he was working on his assignment at the table. I asked him whether the maintenance man found anything wrong with his window. He gave me a blank look, and asked me what I was talking about. I repeated what I said, and he swore nobody came in his room, and neither did he hear anyone knocking on the other doors. I told him to be serious and stop fooling around, but he insisted he was telling the truth. From his expression and demeanour, I could see he wasn’t joking.
When I told Thomas what happened, he just kept quiet and shook his head in disbelief. Was the blond man a spirit or ghost? I don’t know, and I can’t explain what occurred.
This is just one of the two strange experiences I encountered while in university. I will narrate the other story on another occasion…
