As much as I enjoy this post on Chupzang Nunnery and appreciate the detailed introduction of it, I can’t help but notice there was no mentioned of Dorje Shugden in the protector chapel although Pabongka Rinpoche had given His 24-day lamrim course here. This property also once belonged to H.H. Trijang Dorje Chang who is the heart son of Pabongka Rinpoche. Both Pabongka Rinpoche and Trijang Rinpoche are very prominent Dorje Shugden practitioners as well as highly attained lamas. The Dorje Shugden lineage was carried and spread by them to many. Many Gelug masters today are their direct or indirect students due to the influence of these two lamas. So, logically speaking, these nuns would be Dorje Shugden practitioners.

Professor José Ignacio Cabezón is a Professor of Religious Studies of the Department of Religious Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Professor Cabezón was appointed first holder of the Dalai Lama Chair in 2001 of the university. This chair was created in honour of His Holiness for the Tibetan Buddhism and Cultural Studies to preserve and learn from the traditions of Tibetan culture. The linkage between Professor Cabezón and His Holiness is an obvious one. It might make sense if Professor Cabezón avoid mentioning Dorje Shugden, perhaps even replace it with Nechung, so to be on the good sides of His Holiness.

I admire Professor Cabezón’s scholarship very much and I believe a scholar should have good ethics to seek truth rather than taking sides for any reasons.

I like the idea of massless particles though it involves a form in the picture as massless is a body in different shapes. A form regardless of its shape still requires many particles to come together so to form it. Therefore, a form cannot be independent and exist on its own.

Another point I find interesting is Ali and Das’s avoidance in using the singularities. This might contradict with the concept of a particle as it has the quality of being singular to begin with. The concept of geodesic and trajectory although differs from the way there are presented, ie the difference between a line and a path, both still requires one thing to function. Therefore, singularity still plays a role there.

    Dear Edward,

Thank you for this comprehensive post. It is really amazing how Bigfoot is sighted at so many places yet people are denying their existence. The evidence in your post has given more credibilities for Bigfoot’s existence.

It is true that we have very limited knowledge about many things, including fellow earthlings we have never heard of. Being open minded about new things are important as we need to improve and not stay stagnant with a narrow mind that will not bring success in life.

Thank you for this and looking forward to more sharing from you.

I know I don’t belong in sprawling cities, crowded places, busy stores, paved streets, smoke-filled skies, pollution, restaurants, airports, boats and trains. I am not interested in the pursuit of company, money, fame, name, place or position as it is all transitory. All will be gone in time and only time wasted because it never lasts. Why be involved in human affairs of ego, position, power, competition, fighting, wealth, careers, dreams, pursuits, goals, deceptions, romance and everything hedonistic that bring only a semblence of happiness but not the real permanent happiness we truly seek. We spend our lives pursuing goals that are not lasting nor can we keep. That is not where I belong nor what I should do.

I belong in the mountains where trees dominate the terrain, majestic hills sweep into blue skies, mountain streams of turquoise inviting me to partake and beautiful gentle animals roam. I belong in a small retreat house engaged in devotions to Manjushri, incense billowing, puja bells ringing daily and meditation upon the ultimate truth of reality expunging all traces of samsara from within my mind stream. Where I take my vegetarian meals, wear simple maroon cotton robes and make offerings on my shrine daily. Where I have no worldly affairs to attend to but my minutes, hours, days, months and years are spent on the highest of the high, which is the pursuit of full enlightenment as shown by Lord Buddha.

I pray to Lord Manjushri I be granted this soon in this life and all future lives. May I never be born in families, locations and situations where I am distracted by the endless and useless affairs of humans from the holy dharma but always near a supreme holy guru who is no other than Manjushri. May I partake of the Dharma from Manjushri my guru and quench my thirst for the final time.

    感谢仁波切和Pastor Niral和其他幕后成员无私的收集这些护法的资料,让我们真的获益不浅。

    在藏传佛教,每一传承都有不一样的护法,但是博文里有提到一些传承也有共同的护法如:
    1. Mahakala Bernagchen – 噶玛噶举派和宁玛派传承
    2. Citipati – 萨迦派和格鲁派传承
    3. Six-Armed Mahakala – 香巴噶举派和格鲁派传承
    4. Vaishravana – 所有传承
    5. Pehar –

The above article is another thorough and logical teachings of Rinpoche on the Dorje Shugden practice in the Sakya lineage.

The CTA and many anti-Shugden people like to degrade Dorje Shugden by calling Him dogyal, a king spirit from Do, claiming His nature is a spirit. It is true that Dorje Shugden together with Setrap and Tsui Marpo (Kache Marpo) are referred to as the gyalpo sum, the three spirit kings, by name in both the Sakya and Gelug lineage but that doesn’t mean that their nature is a spirit. Before Dorje Shugden was propitiated in the Gelug lineage, the 30th Sakya Trizin Ngawang Sonam Rinchen first enthroned and accepted Dorje Shugden as a protector. Trizin is a throne-holder, same as Tripa used in the Gelug school for Gaden Tripa; both are lineage holders, the person who kept the lineage teachings, practiced and taught it to others unmistakenly. A person of this calibre would have the wisdom to tell whether Dorje Shugden’s nature is enlightened or not.

An enlightened Buddha is limitless; he has the abilities to manifest and emanate in different forms according to the needs of his audience. Not like most of us, some spiritual practitioners can recognize these emanations due to their spiritual attainments. These attainments are the results from the practice of the Buddha’s teachings thus allowing the said practitioners the clarity to recognize any emanations of the Buddha. This clarity is the quality that the Sakya Trizin and Gaden Tripa possess. They have the ability to absorb the massive corpus teachings of the lineage, practice them and gained attainments from them without mistakes. Therefore, they have the clarity to tell Dorje Shugden is an emanation of Manjushri though He emanated as a king spirit by type and by name.

The name gyalpo is what the CTA held on firmly, ignoring the ability of a Buddha and the lineage masters. When CTA insisted Dorje Shugden is a spirit, they directly put down the lineage and the lineage masters and deny of their clarity of mind and spiritual attainments. Dorje Shugden was enthroned, praised, propitiated by SEVEN Sakya Trizins, some of which is the emanation of Dorje Shugden, and some wrote lengthy kangsol and prayer. Their actions are the clear evidence of Dorje Shugden’s nature, and His practice as a major one.

As a Dorje Shugden practitioner, seeing the evidence presented on this post, I have gained stronger faith in Dorje Shugden. I choose to believe in all the lineage masters and highly attained beings, including my Guru, His Eminence the 25th Tsem Rinpoche, for they have the clarity to see the truth as compared to the ordinary people at the CTA who are still deluded by the three poisons.

The Unknown

The Known and unknown are both feared,
Known is being comfortable and stagnant,
The unknown may be growth and opportunities,
One shall never know if one fears the unknown more than the known.
Who says the unknown would be worse than the known?
But then again, the unknown is sometimes worse than the known. In the end nothing is known unless we endeavour,
So go pursue all the way with the unknown,
because all unknown with familiarity becomes the known.

Such a wondrous place to be with such a view that heals the soul. Why live in a city where it is unnatural and polluted. Everyday in the city is a day away from where we belong. We belong among the greens, forest, mountains and clean air. We belong in such a place and doing our retreats, sadhanas and mantras to find the ultimate place of belonging and peace....the ultimate place is within us with a developed spiritual mind. Hard to achieve among distractions in the city.

When we see others who behave not according to our expectations and just to ‘get them back’ we throw all caution to the wind and we get angry, retaliate, fight back, scream, yell and then quit, it shows our mind. Everything is about our own mind. That is not to say they are not at fault. But if we want the world to act perfectly in our presence and then we don’t get angry, that is SO INCREDIBLE IDEALISTIC AND WE ARE DOOMED FROM THE START in anything we do. We have to keep our equilibrium always. Remember our vows, promises and our own state of mind. Be kind to ourselves and not let the other person throw us off because we have to be in control of our own minds. Remember, our mind and how it reacts is the key.--- H.E Tsem Rinpoche

So this is a general overview of Guhyasamaja. I’ve only hit on some of the high points of it. There’s a lot more in it. So when we think of Guhyasamaja practice, we shouldn’t just think in terms of some set of rituals. It’s important to realize that this is a vast system that, as I said, offers the template for what is going on in general in anuttarayoga tantra practice on the generation stage and complete stage. And it has extraordinary detail on the death, bardo, and rebirth process, how to work with it, how to recognize what’s going on. And then there’s the whole apparatus with we can actually derive the meaning of the tantra from the obscure type of language in which it was written. Read more - http://www.tsemrinpoche.com/?p=87052

All beings have feelings and do not want pain, to be hurt or harmed. Therefore we must respect this and not harm animals. See this video how this man has made good friends with a special fish who comes when he rings for the fish. Touching. Tsem Rinpoche

HH the Dalai Lama prays with HH Trijang Rinpoche and HH Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche. Such a beautiful video of His Holiness Dalai Lama, His Holiness Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche and His Holiness Dilgo Kyentse Rinpoche (Very exalted high Nyingma lama) are all praying together. In the background you see a young Kyabje Lati Rinpoche too. So beautiful. This is how it was before the ban. All the sects and high lamas were superbly harmonious. After the Dorje Shugden ban things changed for the worse. May the ban be released soon. Tsem Rinpoche

Eli Levine asked: Good evening/morning Pastors, I hope everyone is doing well at Kechara and is living life to its fullest. I was wondering how one could tell if they were a Buddha or not. It seems counter-intutive that one claims Buddhahood spontaneously (which makes them suspect for ego), or is recognized by other Buddhas (even though there don't appear to be any living at the moment, as far as I can tell). I have read the Diamond Sutra and the Bardo Thodl to look for clues. I understand interdependent existence and that all that I experience is created by myself. I also smile at the silliness of existence, realizing that that is just a concept. Am I a Buddha? Is this something that time will prove to others, even if I am convinced? Frankly, I feel as though I am just waiting and burning out negative and positive karma at this point; I only want parinirvana. I hope you're able to guide me. Thank you.
pastor answered: Dear Eli Levine, Thank you for your well wishes. In regards to your question, if one asks such a question then it is evident from scriptural basis that one is not enlightened. When enlightenment is achieved, one’s mind would become the Dharmakaya, therefore would know one is in fact enlightened. There would be no doubt in this, it would simply be a fact. That is not to say we are not on the path to achieving this, simply that we have yet to achieve our goal. As for living Buddhas recognising other Buddhas, there are in fact many Buddhas living currently that can therefore identify other Buddhas. It is a well-known fact that many high lamas are emanations of various Buddhas, and so they can recognise each other. Buddhas can emanate in many forms from high lamas, normal monks or nuns, teachers or even our family and friends to benefit sentient beings, but as un-enlightened beings we are not able to recognise them as such. But those who are living can and do recognise each other, and within the framework of Tibetan Buddhism it is practice to recognise them as such, in order to provide a platform from which to share the Dharma teachings. To say that there are no Buddhas living current actually restricts the compassionate activities of the Buddhas. They can even manifest as inanimate objects to provide sentient beings with relief from suffering and plant beneficial imprints in the minds of these sentient beings. Since you have understood interdependent origination, and that all experiences are created in the mind, you are on the path, but one key element is missing and this is enlightened compassion. There is a slight difference between understanding, and realisation. Realisation is when a person operates from this understanding. This can be a measuring stick to show others that one is enlightened. An enlightened being does not rest in their knowledge and mind but benefits other sentient beings due to their enlightened compassion. You have also stated that you are burning your positive and negative karma, this is another statement which suggests you have not yet reached the enlightened state. This is because when enlightenment is achieved karma is negated altogether, as one’s mind is free from samsara. The physical body is merely a receptacle for this mind to inhabit. Parinirvana only occurs after nirvana is achieved in one’s physical form. This would necessarily mean you would have to be enlightened already before Parinirvana occurs. From how you have asked the question it seems as though you have not reached that stage….yet. We need to keep learning, practicing, transform our minds, focus out and be of benefit to others, and then we can all achieve enlightenment. This is an achievable fact.

Monty asked: Dear Pastors, Is there a serkyem prayer to Namkar Barzin?
pastor answered: Dear Monty, Namkar Barzin is a special protector of Domo Geshe Rinpoche, his monasteries and temples. He was oath-bound by Domo Geshe Rinpoche to serve the Dharma and put under the care of Dorje Shugden. As such there are rituals and rites to invoke upon his presence, power and protection. Namkar Barzin also takes trance in the oracles from Domo Geshe Rinpoche’s Dungkar Monastery, where he was installed as a Dharma protector. Since the practice of serkym is a common aspect to Dharma protector practices, I am sure that a dedicated serkym prayer to Namkar Barzin does indeed exists, however I do not currently have a translated copy of this text. However since he was placed under the care of Dorje Shugden, he is included in the serkym liturgy to Dorje Shugden. He verse is: Vow-breakers’ heart-blood purified like gold, This drink of fully boiling serkym, I offer to Namka Bardzin and entourage Accepting, accomplish the yogi’s intended purpose! You can find the complete serkym liturgy to Dorje Shugden here: http://www.dorjeshugden.org/practice/diamond-path-a-daily-sadhana-of-dorje-shugden There is also a nice post by His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche, available here: http://www.tsemrinpoche.com/tsem-tulku-rinpoche/buddhas-dharma/invocation-to-namkar-barzin.html, which details a little of his history and benefits. There is also a prayer together with Namkar Barzin’s mantra available on the page. I hope this has helped.

Harold Musetescu asked: Does H.E. Tsem Tulku have a mantra of himself that can be used by his students? Also I understand that there is no Dorje Shugden Phurba/Kilya practice. If one could be created would it be created by an enlightened master or say an Oracle of Dorje Shugden? There is already a dice divination using Dorje Shugden that was created by an Oracle while in trance of Dorje Shugden. I feel it is time for a Dorje Shugden Phurba/Kilya practice. What do you think, Pastor.
pastor answered: Dear Harold, Yes His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche does have what is known as a name mantra. This is recited at the end of all pujas conducted in Kechara together with a Long Life prayer for His Eminence to continue to live long and continue expounding the Dharma. It is also recited by His Eminence’s students at the end of their daily practices, just before the recitation of the completion dedication. Two Long Life prayers can be found here: http://www.tsemrinpoche.com/tsem-tulku-rinpoche/buddhas-dharma/long-life-prayer-by-kensur-konchok-tsering-rinpoche-and-trijang-rinpoche.html. These were composed by His Holiness Trijang Choktrul Rinpoche and Kensur Rinpoche Konchok Tsering (the Abbot Emeritus of Gaden Shartse Monastery) for students to recite for His Eminence’s Long Life. His Eminence 25th Tsem Rinpoche’s name mantra: OM AH GURU KIRTI DAZA SHASEN DHARA KYANDHI SIDDHI HUNG HUNG This mantra is recited 21 times or more by students or others who pray for Rinpoche’s long life. The past masters have actually said that if you have strong faith and good samaya with your guru, then reciting his name mantra will lead to many attainments in one’s spiritual practice. There have even been cases where a person’s illness has been healed through the power of engaging in a recitation retreat of their guru’s name mantra. In regards to the phurba practice, this actually refers to the practice of the yidam (meditational deity) known as Dorje Phurba or Vajrakilaya. In this yidam’s practice one of the main implements that is used is an actual phurba/kila. This practice is known to remove obstacles and destroy outer and inner energies that hinder spiritual progress. As this a separate yidam deity practice, there cannot be a Dorje Shugden Phurba practice as they are two different deities. On the other hand, the phurba/kila as a ritual instrument, is used within certain Dorje Shugden rituals, such as Dorje Shugden’s wrathful fire puja, in which it is used to destroy very malevolent energies, together with other ritual implements. As for a Dorje Shugden ritual that focuses on the use of a phurba specifically, I am unaware if any do exist. That being said, as you have rightly stated, it is very possible for an enlightened master or even Dorje Shugden himself through the medium of a qualified oracle to compose a ritual that uses a phurba as a main ritual implement. However rituals that have the same effect as the use of phurba, that destroy negative forces, already do exist within Dorje Shugden’s many rituals, as detailed in His Holiness Trijang Rinpoche definitive corpus of Dorje Shugden teachings, known as ‘Music Delighting the Ocean of Protectors.’ You can find out more about this text here: http://www.tsemrinpoche.com/tsem-tulku-rinpoche/dorje-shugden/music-delighting-the-ocean-of-protectors-a-definitive-guide-to-dorje-shugden-by-trijang-rinpoche.html. At present the English translation is not of the entire text. The remainder of the text dealing with the various rituals to Dorje Shugden to fulfill certain purposes has not been translated into English as of yet. One thing that I know for sure, if we engage in the practice of Dorje Shugden on a daily basis together with Lama Tsongkhapa’s Guru Yoga or any other deity practice, we will definitely be protected from various harms and obstacles. If one practices mind transformation, the six perfections and the path as expounded in the various Lam Rim texts, then the holy enlightened beings can definitely bless and protect us from negative energies and forces. I hope this small explanation has helped.

Lee asked: How can we help spirits if we know that they need help but we are unable to understand and do not know how to help them? Any suggestion?
pastor answered: Dear Lee, This is a very good question. For the most of us we are unable to help spirits because we do not have such attainments from our spiritual practice to be able to do so. This is possible though, and is attainable through higher states of mind that comes about from intense spiritual practice. For us, however, who do not have this ability the best method to help spirits would be to engage in virtuous activities and dedicate the merits generated from those activities to alleviating their sufferings. A good example would be generating the merits from our daily practice to them or even engaging in or sponsoring pujas or prayers to be recited for them. This is very beneficial as not only is there a generation of merit but we are invoking the various energies of the enlightened beings to aid them. Two very good pujas to do are Dharma protector pujas such as Dorje Shugden, Setrap or Kalarupa, and secondly Medicine Buddha Puja. The Dharma protector puja generates a lot of merit that helps to clear the obstacles that the spirit may be facing, while the Medicine Buddha puja would provide them with healing energy and plants beneficial imprints in their mindstreams for the future. If we are very sincere in our wish to alleviate the suffering of spirits, then we should engage in spiritual practice wholeheartedly. When we have gained our own attainments then we can help the spirits ourselves. I hope this helps.

David asked: If we wear a protector string or pendant when we do our meditations and mantras, will that help open up our postitive imprints from past lives?
pastor answered: Dear David Thank you for your question. Yes, both of these holy items can help open up imprints from past lives, as a protection string is blessed by the protector and pendants bless our bodies and mind. However the best and most effective way to open up these imprints, even more so than wearing protection strings and pendants is to engage in the actual practice of the Dharma. By this I mean actual mind transformation, and development of the Six Perfections. While we are practicing the beneficial virtues such as generosity, patience, good ethical conduct, etc., since we have these imprints from previous lives, these open up quicker and we able to use them on our spiritual path towards enlightenment. These imprints are further strengthened and refined by our current practice, which furthers our spiritual progress. I hope this helps.
