When the exiled Tibetan leadership (Central Tibetan Administration or CTA) in Dharamsala, North India pushes and enforces the unethical ban against Dorje Shugden, their actions will have the opposite desired effect. The more the CTA enforces this ban which infringes on religious rights, the more China will do to protect the practice of Dorje Shugden in Tibet and China using stronger laws. Why? Because China wants peace. So the more the CTA pushes and creates schism using this issue, the more Central Chinese and regional government will do to protect this practice because they want peace. And this is where it counts the most since the holy land of Tibetan Buddhism is in Tibet. Therefore Dorje Shugden’s practice will be protected and preserved for future generations. The CTA’s move to further segregate people using Dorje Shugden as an issue to distract from their failures is not gaining ground where it counts which is Tibet.

In the Western countries Dorje Shugden can be practiced without interference in religious freedom. For Dorje Shugden’s practice to be banned by a government in a Western country would never happen. But in Tibet, it has been different thanks to interference by the exiled Tibetan government. Now because of the Tibetan leadership’s unskillful and undemocratic ban, it has pushed China to protect and preserve the Dorje Shugden lineage in Tibet and China where it counts. Ironic as that sounds. China and its provinces are now enforcing laws so that people may practice Dorje Shugden if they choose without prejudice and no one may create conflict using the Dorje Shugden issue. That is another milestone. Tibetan leadership would like to say there is no religious freedom in Tibet, but it is the exact opposite where Tibetan leadership bans Dorje Shugden and China allows religious freedom in Tibet.

Remember, China allows and protects the Dorje Shugden practice, and gives religious freedom to all faiths. This is much more than Dharamsala. In Markham County in Tibet, you will now be prosecuted if you create division using the Dorje Shugden issue. You can see that there are notices being issued by regional governments in Tibet making it illegal to ban Dorje Shugden or to use this as an issue to destabilize communities. If the exiled Tibetan government in India really wanted to simply advise us against Dorje Shugden’s falsely perceived harm, they would have said it once and just left it. It is not ‘advice’ when they ban Dorje Shugden adherents from Tibetan hospitals, jobs, meetings, religious institutions and gatherings.

Do you know that within Tibetan society, if you practice Dorje Shugden, you are not allowed to attend a public talk by the Dalai Lama, who is the incarnation of the Buddha of Compassion and love? Everyone else can attend these talks but if you practice Dorje Shugden, you cannot attend. They are the ONLY Tibetans who are not worthy or human enough to attend. According to the exiled Tibetan leadership, Dorje Shugden Tibetans deserve no dignity, no equal rights and deserve to be sidelined. Is this democracy, love or Buddhist behaviour? If the Tibetan government were so caring to advise against Dorje Shugden’s practice, they would not have a page on their official website devoted to degrading the Dorje Shugden lineage of 400 hundred years and its millions of adherents because this type of behaviour and publication only creates disharmony, discord and reflects bad governance.

What kind of government does that? Governments are suppose to create harmony within their people, not create and encourage discord. The exiled Tibetan government should not interfere with religion at all; in fact, as a democratic government, they should not advise for or against any Buddhas, deities or practices. They should be purely secular and leave religious matters to an individual’s personal choice. After 60 years, they have not learned this important lesson of governance yet and hence, they have made no headway with China regarding Tibet…and it’s been 60 years! No Western government will ever lend their full, unwavering support for H.H. the Dalai Lama and the exiled Tibetan government on the issue of Tibet and take concrete action. It’s time to wake up. The exiled Tibetan leadership must remove the ban against Shugden and unite their people in secular harmony and acceptance on the basis they are Tibetans and not their religion. In this way we can preserve our culture and identity. Tibetans cannot and will never be united because of religion. Never. But they must be united on the basis of being Tibetan, full stop. When will Dharamasala’s exiled Tibetan leaders realize this?

The more the Dalai Lama’s exiled government in Dharamsala suppresses Dorje Shugden’s practice and its adherents, the more it will grow. The more others will step in to safeguard religious freedoms, Dorje Shugden’s practice included. Using this method of banning Dorje Shugden’s practice, the exiled Tibetan leadership will not fulfill their wishes so release the unethical ban already! China now safeguards this practice and the lamas in Tibet are teaching the Dorje Shugden practice and this means it will grow. The lifespan of the Tibetan government in exile is numbered and the clock’s ticking, while the government of China will not be anywhere near ending soon.

Comments such as this one left by ‘Suzy in Hawaii’ on Tsem Rinpoche’s YouTube channel is becoming common. After demonizing Dorje Shugden for twenty years, the Tibetan leadership is fast losing its supporters to logic and better information. In this comment Suzy writes honestly how she held on her jaundiced view of Shugden only because the words of the Dalai Lama colored her judgement. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vl-4lIwxph4&t=11s

Trode Khangsar Chapel in Lhasa, Tibet

Over 400 years ago a great and learned lama Tulku Drakpa Gyeltsen was famed in Mongolia, Tibet, Nepal and China for being very saintly and compassionate. He resided in his residence (Zimkhang Gongma Ladrang) in Drepung Monastery. His root guru was H.H. the Omniscient 4th Panchen Lama and his close dharma brother was the 5th Dalai Lama.

The 5th Dalai Lama and Tulku Drakpa Gyeltsen had a very close and dharmic relationship and often went to receive teachings together from the 4th Panchen Lama. They were close in age. They both became very learned and well known. During this time, the Dalai Lama was enthroned as a Dharma King of Tibet. But more people went to see Tulku Drakpa Gyeltsen for teachings, initiations and divinations. This made the attendants of the 5th Dalai Lama feel threatened that Tulku Drakpa Gyeltsen’s fame might usurp the power of the 5th Dalai Lama. So they had a khata forced down his throat. At that moment, Tulku Drakpa Gyeltsen dissolved his psychic winds and generated the wish to be a great guardian of Buddha and Tsongkapa’s teachings. As his consciousness dissolved, he entered ‘bardo’ as a dharma protector of the highest order (jikten depey sungma). Many signs were seen throughout Lhasa at this time and the earth was said to have shaken in Lhasa. This event was already predicted to Tulku Drakpa Gyeltsen’s previous incarnation when he was one of the 8 main disciples of Lord Tsongkapa the Supreme Master and he served Tsongkapa directly by building Gaden Monastery.

When the 5th Dalai Lama heard what his scheming and power-hungry attendants had done, he was very distressed. He was very sorry Tulku Drakpa Gyeltsen was murdered and dishonored as he was a great dharma master. The 5th Dalai Lama composed an apology to Tulku Drakpa Gyeltsen. In Lhasa, tens of thousands gathered for the cremation of Tulku Drakpa Gyeltsen’s holy body. During the cremation, the 5th Dalai Lama’s apology was read out at which flames spontaneously arose from the body of Tulku Drakpa Gyeltsen commencing the cremation. From the body, during cremation, a powerful whirlwind of smoke tunneled into the sky for all to see as this was an indication Tulku Drakpa Gyeltsen’s consciousness has arisen as the Dharma Protector Dorje Shugden. The Dharma Protector Setrap immediately recognized this new protector Dorje Shugden and ‘enthroned’ him as a powerful Dharma Protector in the realm of the Buddhas. From this, Setrap and Dorje Shugden are closely connected and very close working hand in hand always. After the cremation, the great 5th Dalai Lama built a Dorje Shugden chapel on the spot the cremation took place and named it Trode Khangsar. The 5th Dalai Lama commissioned the statue of Dorje Shugden in this chapel and had monks installed in the chapel to do continuous propitiations to Dorje Shugden. Trode Khangsar Chapel was a commemoration to Tulku Drakpa Gyeltsen who was wronged and also a celebration of his consciousness arising as the World Peace Peace Protector Dorje Shugden.

This Trode Khangsar Chapel still exists now in Lhasa where many make pilgrimages there. It is in good condition and was recently renovated. It is over 400 years old and a testimony to the respect the Great 5th Dalai Lama had to Tulku Drakpa Gyeltsen who arose as Dorje Shugden.

I have visited this holy chapel in Lhasa years back. I’ve never heard of it till I was in Lhasa and by chance, I was told about it which I was happy to visit. I could not find the place but strangely a bunch of pilgrims from Amdo told me they would show me how to get there in Lhasa.

This short video is a short clip of this holy Trode Khangsar Chapel in Lhasa today commemorating Dorje Shugden, built by the great 5th Dalai Lama. The great 5th Dalai Lama even composed a prayer to Dorje Shugden which is still available today and we can recite to invoke the blessings, protection, and assistance of World Peace Protector Dorje Shugden.

    HUM
Though unmoving from the sphere of primordial spontaneity,
With wrathful turbulent power, swifter than lightning,
Endowed with heroic courage to judge good and bad,
I invite you with faith, please come to this place!

Robes of a monk, crown adorned with rhinoceros leather hat,
Right hand holds ornate club, left holds a human heart,
Riding various mounts such as nagas and garudas,
Who subdues the mamos of the charnel grounds, praise to you!

Samaya substances, offerings and torma, outer, inner and secret,
Favourite visual offerings and various objects are arranged.
Although, previously, my wishes were a bit dense,
Do not stop your powerful apparitions, I reveal and confess!

Now respectfully praising with body, speech, and mind,
For us, the masters, disciples, benefactors and entourages,
Provide the good and avert the bad!
Bring increase like the waxing moon in spiritual and temporal realms!

    Moreover, swiftly accomplishing all wishes,
According to our prayers, bestow the supreme effortlessly!
And like the jewel that bestows all wishes,
Always protect us with the Three Jewels!

Many a times, China is accused of not caring and even being very hard on its citizens, that truth may have some truth to it, but that also needs to be balanced up by news and instances whereby the Chinese government protected the rights of its own people. This is such an instance.

  4. yenpin on Jun 6, 2016 at 10:30 pm

Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this article.

I respect the Markham government in enforcing laws to make the ban on Shugden illegal. This law is against those who use the conflict of the practice of Protector Dorje Shugden to incite religious discriminations, create social conflicts, destroy national unity, and attempt to split the motherland.

It is extremely important to have this law. Everyone has human rights and religios freedom. The segregation and discrimination have bring lots of suffering to Dorje Shugden practioners.

With more of this article being shared via social media, I hope more people are aware of this unfair treatment and will help lift the ban.

It is really a good start and good move for making the Dorje Shugden ban illegal! This is very much needed and necessary for the CTA to see and learn from which protects many people from being discriminate and hurt in anyway just because they choose to be Dorje Shugden practitioners.

The Dorje Shugden ban is causing so much sufferings in not only the Tibetan community in exile but also those outside of it. Shugden practitioners are not allowed to get in touch with their families, friends etc.; are denied their human rights – banned from seeking medical assistance, working or visiting government organisation, buying daily groceries, going to school…just because of their religious practice. There are signs everywhere in hospitals, shops, schools to enforce this illegal ban causing all Shugden practitioners great griefs.

Markam’s action is a good start in reducing the pain and we wish very much many will follow and eventually lift the ban for good!

  8. JP on Feb 27, 2016 at 7:54 pm

This letter shows proof that there is so much discrimination towards Dorje Shugden practitioners that the government has to issue a letter to forbid it. So for those who keep denying that there is no ban and no discrimination, tell that to the Chinese government and see what they say. There is so much evidence of this discrimination that it becomes ridiculous for even denying it.

Every country has it’s flaws and strengths and none are perfect. So to point fingers at each other is not a solution if we truly want to help each other. China’s decision to arrest religious discrimination because it causes social unrest, is, in my opinion, the right move. Any country that is chaotic will not progress. So for the sake of the 1 billion plus citizens of China, any social unrest should not be tolerated.

As for the Tibetan Govt in Exile, better known as Central Tibetan Administration (CTA), it’s time they wake up that they have failed miserably in getting Tibet back. The entire world is trying to get into China’s good books due to economic reasons. Big boys like USA and UK are mending ties with China. So for CTA to continue criticizing China and making them their enemy is not a wise choice. They will only make it more difficult for themselves to receive donations and grants from countries that want to be in good relations with China.

So either CTA changes their stance and make friends with China in order to survive into the future, or they continue to aggravate China and eventually be alone after all the friendly countries stop supporting them.

Finally!! China put her feet down, set the law to stop the ANTI-SHUGDEN people from splitting away their community.

More than 400 years, Tibetan has been practicing Dorje Shugden as their Dharma Protector to help them in their spiritual path. They never have any issues of harming others nor involving in politic. Dorje Shugden practice is always align with Lord Buddha’s teachings which is practicing compassion and love to all sentient being. Lord Buddha says: study so that understand the logic of Dharma and gain wisdom not following blindly. All Buddhist want peace. Buddhist practices everything so that peace is among all mankind and sentient beings EQUALLY.

I am very grateful that Chinese goverment is making it illegal for the sake of the people of China to have harmony and peace. This is an extremely important issue. I am glad they are care enough to stop this seriously and to protect the people in MARKAM. May all province make Dorje Shugden’s ban illegal just like MARKAM to protect them for creating unnecessary disharmony issues among 1,379,873,648 people in China due to the ban of Dorje Shugden.

It is great to know that China is taking the initiative to enforce religious freedom to create harmony within the country. China has progressed and developed so much and the CTA should heed and follow China’s great leadership. While the CTA is causing so much sufferings and pain by creating religious disharmony, schism and discrimination, China is wise enough to promote religious freedom to create a harmonious and peaceful country.

It is great news that China is enforcing freedom of religion and to practice any religion its citizens want to.

It is very encouraging since China has been very communistic.

Even China, a strong country, allows freedom to practice any religion.. why should an exiled government even need to enforce a ban and create disharmony amongst its people?

We are not in yesteryears where there is no accessibility to communications, to media, to technology. CTA should move on with times and see that creating a ban is not helpful and creating ill-will and non-unity with the citizens.

To unite the country, to regain the country, the people should be united.

    Thank you.

I am happy to see this initiative from the Chinese leadership. They may not be perfect but at least they are taking steps in the right direction. To issue such a notice, and to issue a response in the way they did to the Reuters report (http://www.tsemrinpoche.com/tsem-tulku-rinpoche/dorje-shugden/china-officially-supports-dorje-shugden.html), is an indication that they do pay attention to the voices of their people. They are perhaps just a little slower than what we *expect* of them and there’s nothing wrong about that.

What people don’t understand when they make demands of China is that it is not easy for China, which has a rich and complex history, to make such changes. Their announcements and their policies affect a sixth of the earth’s population; to disseminate the information and ensure it is implemented evenly across their nation takes a lot of careful planning.

It is a sixth of the world’s population that they have to feed, educate, employ and keep happy, and make sure that their demands are met as much as possible. The Chinese leadership are dealing with the unique characteristics, histories, cultures and demands of 56 ethnic groups. Give one group what they want, and it could potentially destablise another area of the country and lead to more suffering for the people there.

So I think people need to stop demanding that China imposes Western ideals of democracy, because such ideals just don’t apply in a country as complex and vast as China…what other country has 56 ethnic minorities to deal with?! So seriously, give China a break. Let them make such pronouncements and congratulate them for it, and show them that there is appreciation for their efforts. It’s not easy being the Chinese leadership, no matter how much people want to demonise and turn them into monsters for being in the position that they are.

At last, we Shugden practitioners, have been shown justice by the world’s second economy and a raising world power, CHINA.

Over the last 60 years, China has progressed tremendously both on the world political stage and also the international economical arena and what had the CTA achieved.

It is time to wake up, CTA and follow the latest world leadership and not continue with the old fashion manner of controlling your people and on such a issue of ban on religious freedom to worship a deity of 400 years repute.

Time to stop this act of discrimination, suffering and deprivation to Dorje Shugden devotees.

  16. Stella Cheang on Jan 31, 2016 at 10:42 pm

The exiled Tibetan leadership (CTA) over the last 60 years had failed to establish their presence in any significant international organizations such as the United Nations or the League of Nations, nor managed to obtain any recognition of their sovereignty. Also, by CTA’s failure to modernize and develop, they have been unable to mount a convincing case as a capable and independent ruler of the cultural rich but resource poor Tibet.

On the other hand, China who embarked on accelerated development programs to catch up on the social-economic progress, had shifted her global strategic positioning and stance towards religious role amongst the people. This gives rise to the vision of a possibly more autonomous Tibet who would still remain part of China.

With this run up, the issuance of the new law by Markham County to crack down on using the issue of Protector Dorje Shugden practice to create social conflict is a calculated strategic move to severely defuse the ethnicity sentiment among exile Tibetans while promising freedom of religion. Any move from CTA that further oppress or suppress religious freedom of the Tibetans will be fatal in nature.

Thank You Rinpoche for sharing this blogpost with us as it allows us to have a broader perspective of the issue.

    Humbly, bowing down,
    Stella Cheang

Remember, when you finger point at others, 3 of your own fingers point back at yourself. Hence, to make accusations, pass judgements and speak poorly of others, you must ensure your own slate is spick and span clean.

It is obvious that the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) is the “pot calling the kettle black” when the Tibetan leadership that aggressively impose the Dorje Shugden ban by discriminating practitioners from accessing the most basic and fundamental needs such as medical attention, openly and repeatedly accuse China for having no religious freedom.

To make matters worst, not only is China addressing its human rights issue by encouraging religious for its people, China is now protecting Dorje Shugden practitioners from their own leadership with this Public Note.

The CTA should be very ashamed of themselves. Not only have they failed to provide and care for its people, the CTA is like a cancer that is killing anyhting left of the Tibetan culture and tradition by its dogged execution of a ban that they do not even truly understand.

If China can recognize the need for peace through accepting diversity and differences, we must follow suit. We must end this ridiculous ban on Dorje Shugden which has caused nothing but heartache, material loss and emotional damage.

  18. Frederick Law on Jan 31, 2016 at 1:22 am

The CTA pushes and enforce ban on Dorje Shugden to their community, where many school, monasteries, hospitals, shops not allowing Dorje Shugden practitioner to enter which has created so much conflict and division amongst the Tibetan.

But in Markham Tibet it is totally different story, the local authority place a new policy to make it illegal to ban Dorje Shugden. This is a big step forward in seeing the Chinese Government is opening up on it policy of religious freedom and safeguarding the harmony of its people.

If CTA is safeguarding the interest of the Tibetan Community in India, then they should be emulating what Markham is doing by allowing total religious freedom to all, including lifting the ban on Dorje Shugden and by allowing their people the choice to practice openly without being suppressed of discriminated upon.

    Dear Rinpoche,

Thank you for sharing this exciting news. It is a very good news to see that some part of Tibet had stood against the Dalai Lama’s “advice” which is the Dorje Shugden ban. This ban on Dorje Shugden practice had lasted 19 years, where Dorje Shugden practitioners are being shunned aside, alienated, and violated of their basic human rights.

China had already given their stand on Dorje Shugden issue where they will support religious freedom and they will protect Dorje Shugden practitioners via laws. I pray that the ban will be lifted as soon as possible so that the peace can be restored to Dorje SHugden practitioners.

Neither are they very accurate since you know, there’s photographic and video evidence of the Shugden ban and yet Amnesty claims there isn’t.

At least China is making strides in the right direction and for that they should be encouraged. Dharamsala on the other hand, is supposedly “Buddhist” yet continues to insist on discrimination. So before you accuse anyone of anything, why not clean up the mess in your own backyard first? 🙂

          Pictures below –

Dharamsala’s version of respecting freedom of speech…blocking Shugden protestors’ signs with their own. Is THIS religious freedom when your leadership clearly don’t care about how you feel and want to censor your speech?

Sign on the Dalai Lama’s palace in Dharamsala disallowing Shugdenpas from meeting with him. His Holiness is supposed to be the leader of ALL Tibetan people, not SOME Tibetan people so why is he banning Shugden people from receiving his blessings? Surely as so-called spirit worshippers, we need it the most. Is THIS religious freedom when your leader doesn’t even want to see you because of your faith?

Memo issued by a department of the CTA, banning Shugden people from being involved in the Tibetan civil service. Is THIS religious freedom when you can’t work wherever you want, and jobs within your leadership aren’t based on merit but are based on your faith?

Sera Je Monastery recently issued a notice stating that non-Shugden worshippers would be given a badge to identify themselves. Is THIS religious freedom? Even China hasn’t issued such things to differentiate between the various religions!

It is good to know that there is a county in China where Dorje Shugden’s practice is protected by law. In general, the Chinese authorities are supportive of the practice in the country and Tibetans can safely practice Dorje Shugden in China. In western countries, there is religious freedom on the whole and Shugden followers do not encounter any problems. I agree that the only way to unite the Tibetan people is to remove religious discrimination and to have a secular form of government that promotes harmony among the people.

In the end, be it the appeal to Dalai Lama to lift the ban on Shugden practice or the steps taken by the Chinese government to stop the people in Tibet, China, from supporting the ban , there are 2 things that we must continue to emphatically and peacefully and respectfully support – 1)the freedom of everyone to practice the faith of their choice and 2) the end to the conflict, schism, discrimination, persecution, and needless suffering, which the ban has brought to Shugden practitioners.

Thus while it appears that the CTA is doing everything it can to create conflict and schism within the Tibetan community in exile, promoting discrimination, persecution and suffering ,with the ban against Shugden people , the Chinese government, on the other hand, appears to be working to ensure religious freedom and harmony, peace and unity and social stability, through allowing freedom of religion.

Thus long term, we can see the continued preservation of Shugden practice in China, which will lead to the spread and flourishing of the lineage teachings and practices of Je Tsongkhapa (so very necessary for people in this degenerate age) for which Shugden rose to protect, whilst, elsewhere, if the ban continues, the conflict and lack of harmony and unity, will not help in anyway to preserve and spread the Dharma.

Lord Buddha found the way out of suffering, and to peace, for us in the Dharma. Where there is no growth of Dharma or little growth of Dharma, how will suffering cease?

  24. Sharon on Jan 29, 2016 at 1:46 pm

    Dear Rinpoche,

Thank you for sharing this. This is indeed very encouraging news. Hopefully, we will see more places making it illegal to ban Dorje Shugden practice. The ban imposed by CTA is clearly hurting them as well. Instead of marginalising Dorje Shugden practitioners, CTA should realise that it is more beneficial for them to lift the ban and unite all Buddhists to regain their past glory. Logically speaking, who would want to be governed by a government that discriminates based on religious beliefs? If it was me, I would want a government that fosters harmony, peace and allows all citizens to enjoy their human rights such as religious freedom. My humble 2 cents.

    With folded hands.

I don’t know what will happen later. But for sure His Holiness the Dalai Lama words against Dorje Shugden is strong. But then if we create more awareness to change things, things can change. I still love and respect Dalai Lama and many cannot understand that. I just don’t agree with the ban and I feel we should speak out as much as possible. Yes the hate against Shugden followers will not end soon and I’ve gotten plenty of hate from people I have never met before, but that does not matter. I have lost so much in friends and reputation because I speak up and I will continue to. By speaking up and ‘absorbing’ all the hatred I have to endure, many more will benefit from Dorje Shugden’s practice. If by all the hatred I endure, many will be benefitted, then it is okay with me and I will continue. Hatred toward Dorje Shugden practitioners will lessen and we have to make that happen and it’s possible. Please create more awareness of this ban. I thank you . Tsem Rinpoche.

    • Tempa on Jan 29, 2016 at 5:07 pm

Yup, so sure, everything is change, & nothing is permanent, including CTA. The ban on Dorje Shugden goes much deeper than H.H. the 14th Dalai Lama, is being used as a pawn in a global scheme of things via “powers-that-be”, are ‘Luciferians’. Google “Bohemian Grove” & ‘occult rituals’ for those interested, it’s all there for those with eyes to see. Dorje Shudgdon is definitely a threat to the dark-side, hence the ban.

“No one will enter the New World Order unless he or she will make a pledge to worship Lucifer. No one will enter the New Age unless he will take a LUCIFERIAN Initiation.” (David Spangler, Director of Planetary Initiative, United Nations).

      • Wan Wai Meng on Jan 31, 2016 at 2:30 pm

Yes Dorje Shugden is a force of the light. It is a sunshine that shines in the darkest of places. I can’t say for sure that the Dalai Lama is part of the NWO or Illuminati. But Dorje Shugden is all for the spread of Je Tsongkhapa’s doctrine.

      • Pastor Elena Khong Jean Ai on Feb 1, 2016 at 4:11 pm

Illuminati or otherwise, nothing is permanent but how long it remains is how clearly and loudly we speak up, and create the causes for a change. Remaining silent allows the “powers-that-be” (as you put it) to think that they can get away with their actions.

You may believe His Holiness the Dalai Lama is a pawn but to call him a pawn is to assume there are other players in the game, because it’s not possible for a singular pawn. So speaking up pressures the players and the controllers to do something about the situation. Raising awareness, debating with anti-Shugden people, respectfully applying pressure to the leadership are all necessary components in releasing the ban against Shugden, if we want to see a change.

To ban a spiritual or religious belief & practice of any kind is dictatorship act, because no-one or thing is above truth!
The question is, who or what other spiritual practices (good or evil) does Dorje Shugdon are a threat, in-competition with or against?

A poem by By Tempa G Westbroook. You are talented. Let’s hope your poems pay your bills otherwise stop wasting time.

I noticed for every other post you just signed off as Tempa but for your ‘poem’ you signed off in your full name. You really are DYING FOR ATTENTION, CREDIT AND RECOGNITION. You hope if this matrix poem goes viral, you will get credit. You need the attention. I guess this blog site with over 7 million views is a good place for you. The viewership is bringing the truth about the cruel and outdated medieval ban against Dorje Shugden to thousands daily. Awareness is growing on the ban. The more this blog reaches people, the more the truth will spread out. No leader secular or spiritual SHOULD EVER ADVISE AGAINST ANOTHER MAN’S RELIGION. The leaders should keep quiet and stop creating more schism among human kind. Stop using religion to divide people. No leader has the right to encourage hatred toward another spiritual path. The Dalai Lama is wrong. He should never speak against Dorje Shugden and he should never ban their followers from attending his Tibetan SECULAR gatherings. The followers of Dorje Shugden are Tibetans too and regardless of their faith, Dalai Lama as the ‘head of Tibet’ should gather all of them and unite them regardless of religion. All Muslim, Bon, atheist, Nyingma, Kagyu, Gelug, Sakya, gay, male, female Tibetans should be UNITED based on them being Tibetan and not their spiritual choice. Dalai Lama is wrong. How about if Abe, Cameron, Obama, Merkel, Pope, Hollande, Trudeau and the rest of them start disallowing their citizens certain rights, participation in the mainstream because of a certain religion they practice? Would you accept that? NO, NO ONE WOULD. So why is Dalai Lama the exception?

I’ve never met Tsem Rinpoche, but he is brave and he does speak up. I hope he keeps doing so! Many people are behind him. Just for this alone, he has my respects and the respects of thousands of Tibetans and Tibetan Buddhists around the world. Why is he brave? Because the Dalai Lama followers are dangerous, violent and fanatical. They threaten you if you disobey.

        Photos:

Violent, rude, vulgar Tibetans lining up to attend a talk about Compassion, tolerance and love and all that by Dalai Lama. Outside the talks, they are showing their ‘love, compassion and tolerance’ to Dorje Shugden practitioners.

Just a few more years and once the Dalai Lama passes away, all this Dorje Shugden ban dies down and it’s the end of your diatribe. But Dorje Shugden people will multiply, grow and continue. There is not stopping them.

No one had any issues with Dalai Lama till he started this ban in 1996. I am glad the admins have posted what I submitted here for all to see. Thousands will see what I have posted. We can see who the Dalai Lama has been calling his friends who are Nazis who killed many and yet Dalai Lama condemns Dorje Shugden people. As if murderous Nazis are fine to be friends with. It’s fine to be good friends with Nazis and support them and take pictures with them but not Shugden people. His own Shugden people are TIBETANS. They are his people for truth sakes.

You are not on YOUR blog. You are on someone else’s blog giving all types of ‘evidence’ of how wrong the blog owner is in his choice of religion or even his blog posts. No one is going to your page/social media whatever to criticize you but you are coming here. If we were going to your page and posting non-stop like you’re doing then that is trolling. No one is going to your site if you even have one. You don’t like his blog posts then don’t come here. You don’t like his religion of Dorje Shugden you don’t come here and that is fine. No one has to like everything nor do they need to stoke the fire. You don’t believe Shugden is good THAT IS PERFECTLY FINE so don’t come here. I like Shugden and I like the posts here and that is why myself and thousands of others come here daily. You don’t like personal attacks neither does anyone else. You should stop all the attacks. You are purposely coming here to attack. So who is attacking who? Who is the troll or whatever your label is? You write a rude poem insinuating the monk of this blog and you are not attacking? Then what are you doing? Complimenting? Stop your attacks.

Just because you love and respect Dalai Lama does not make you a better person. So what? We all don’t have to love and respect Dalai Lama. You think everyone who follows the Dalai Lama and quotes his words are all so perfect, above everyone and so goody-goody? I don’t think so. Take a real good look at this ‘government in exile’. So much scandal and shame and corruption. And no I don’t hate him, that is your blind assumption. You don’t know me. I don’t like his Shugden policy that has hurt so many and it ends there. I have donated so much to Dalai Lama and his institutions prior to the ban for over a decade. You respecting/liking Dalai Lama does not give you the authority to override other’s religious beliefs and criticize. Dalai Lama does not like Shugden and that is fine, don’t practice and don’t criticize. Shugden practice exists today because many massive high lamas in the hundreds have been practicing Dorje Shugden for four hundred years. They were not pawns to anyone. This is way before the Dalai Lama. There is a lineage, practice and history.

Make it simple: DALAI LAMA AS A RELIGOUS LEADER SHOULD BE RESPONSIBLE AND HOLD HIS SPEECH WHEN CRITICIZING ANOTHER PERSON’S RELGION especially when dealing with DEMOCRATIC countries where he gets his money from and he is a public person. The public is watching. If Dalai Lama is going to open his mouth, he should be aware there will be people who respond back. That he has made many mistakes and it is out there when you do the research and it can be brought up. He is not above anyone to be told he is wrong. Your respect of Dalai Lama does not make you better or give you the right to put another person’s religion down. It is your right to respect him and that’s fine. That is very personal and it is a very personal attack when you do so. There are thousands out there who are criminals, murderers, rapists, thieves, corrupt leaders who love this or that god, deity, Buddha, God, guru, temple, doctrine or whatever, so what? That does not mean anything what they believe in. You are who you are and not who you love or believe in. You have no right to say anything about anyone’s religion. You have no moral authority to come to another person’s blog to tell them they are wrong. You don’t like it, don’t come. Simple.

If you are not Christian, stop using Christian terms, you started it. Lucifer? Satan? You used it. I don’t care if you are Christian or not. I don’t care to talk about your religion or lack of it as it’s your business and your right to do as you like. I don’t criticize your religion. So don’t criticize mine about mine. If Shugden is good, I go to heaven as the old adage goes, if not I go to hell. The end. None of your business.

I am a human being living in a democratic country that does not allow any leader to criticize my religion. I choose my religion and if a leader is going to speak out then so will I. I do not need ANY reasons to practice Dorje Shugden other than I want to. I do not need to justify any reasons to you or any leader such as Dalai Lama or anyone. The Dalai Lama criticizes my spiritual faith, then I will speak up. He should practice tolerance of all religions! The end.

Dorje Shugden practice will grow and even more. Thousands of Dorje Shugden lamas and monks being trained in Tibet, India and abroad. I will continue sponsoring and giving my business profits to the training places of these monks. I use to give it to the Dalai Lama and followed him till he started the ban and hurt so many. I was shocked as many were. Dorje Shugden Tulkus are all back and growing up strong and healthy. Let’s be logical and practical-The Dalai Lama is in his 80’s and how long will he live? When he is gone, Dorje Shugden’s practice will grow further and bigger. No one can stop this.

Have a nice day and don’t be sensitive to take this passionate debate as personal attacks because you are not worth anything to me to attack you. If the evidence I have presented to you about the Dalai Lama’s friends are overwhelming, you can imagine how everyone else feels. I write to counter what you have said as thousands will read this and that is the REAL reason I am responding. You started it and someone spoke up. I spoke up. I love Dorje Shugden. I will continue to support and that is my right. Take your product to another house as no sale here.

Nice videos of Dalai Lama banning kids from school because they practice Shugden. Why talk about this again and again and for school. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OhWRSFCtKhY

@Penpa: Unlike yourself, I’m not a “Dalai Lama hater”. I’ve got much love & respect for H.H. the 14th Dalai Lama, may he live a long life!
We’re all pawns & puppets in this global scheme of things, or more accurately, slaves to money & it’s social engineers, is leading Humanity towards Trans-humanism & microchip the global population, a luciferian agenda. Google it, may help you expand your horizon or not, simple.

        • Tempa on Feb 22, 2016 at 11:06 pm

@Penpa: The ‘difference between you & I is this, I don’t attack H.H. or anyone else here except to expose the luciferians global leaders behind the scenes, only! You on the other hand have exposed & or shared unwarranted information on H.H. only!
Obviously you’re not of Tsem Rinpoche’s circle judging by your demeanor, is that of an ‘extremist’ religion fanatic, only concerned for themselves but none else, a “service to self”, very much like the luciferians! You can squash all ranting about nothing & share with us, WHY THE BAN on DS”! The object of this blog is to help bring about awareness & expose the them, nothing else, keep it to the point. You’re all over the place dude.

      CAN DALAI LAMA BAN ‘LUCIFERIANS’?

        Part 1

        @Tempa,

        Your question:

        CAN DALAI LAMA BAN ‘LUCIFERIANS’?

Answer: No he doesn’t care because he is good friends with many who ‘walk the path of Lucifer.’ He gets benefits from them.

Dalai Lama happily meets with the most notorious people of our century, Nazi war criminals who’ve exterminated thousands, becomes friends with them, exploits his photos with them, adulates their memoirs, accepts money from them and grants them private audiences. The pictures says it all.

        Pictures:
        Dalai Lama with Luciferian Pinochet
Dalai Lama with lifelong Nazi Heinrich Harrer
Dalai Lam accepted millions from Asahara
Dalai Lama with closest friends Nazis, mass
murderers, and sadistic serial killers with Dr. Bruno
Beger, SS Officer, Heinrich Harrer and Chilean Nazi Chief, Miguel Serrano.

Jorg Haider Neo Nazi and speaks very highly of Hitler and his SS soldiers. Great Nazi sympathizer

If the Dalai Lama does not know the background of these men, why does not his cronies investigate and advise him or does money and fame speak louder?

Don’t you think Nazis, dictators, murderers and their likes are much worse than the ‘dreaded’ enemy Shugden followers? These Nazis and their supporters have killed millions and continue to spout their Neo Nazi hatred speeches till their deaths spreading the word of race superiority, hatred and murder. Dalai Lama can meet, be friends, accept money from them, take pictures with them, have private meetings and he can’t meet with Dorje Shugden people? Dorje Shugden people are his own Tibetan people and he divides them, segregates them and speaks against them? Don’t you think Nazis are one of the biggest human crime tragedies of the 20th Century and yet Dalai Lama is fine with them. Get your perspectives right.

Asahara now is prison in Japan for the lethal gas he had his cult members commit. He touted himself as a great spiritual leader and the Dalai Lama knew this. He requested for meeting in Dalai Lama’s private quarters and was granted. During the meeting millions were offered to Dalai Lama. Asahara wanted pictures with Dalai Lama to ‘validate’ his spiritual ministry. Now he is on death row for teaching doctrines on murder and carrying it out on innocent people. He is Dalai Lama’s good friend. A murderer like Asahara can see Dalai Lama, attend talks and be friends but Shugden people cannot. Something convoluted about this.

(I hope Admin will allow all this and pictures to be posted to make my point to Tempa. I do apologize as the photos of these people are just bad energy, bad news and bad. Gratitude for this blog site and all the works. Penpa)

Bruno Berger during the height of the Nazi nightmare in Europe was sent to Tibet and was well received by the Dalai Lama’s cabinet. Every other civilized country in the world was fighting the Nazi terror and take over of lands but Tibet/Dalai Lama’s ministers welcomed them. Was Tibet ignorant, stupid or just plain short sighted. That does not bespeak of good governance. You can see a Nazi flag flying in their meeting place. Bruno with some of the ministers of Tibet including high ranking Tsarong (right) seated together. Why would US and the allied forces help Tibet when this photo was plastered all over the world? How would Europe and US governments at the time deal with Tibet’s cry for help when they meet with murdering Nazis? How shameful. Why does Tibet cry injustice about the Chinese takeover of Tibet when they supported the Nazis swallowing up Europe and murdering in the millions those who opposed? Karma came back. Tibet is friendly with Nazis yet decry war? These are Dalai Lama’s good friends.

@Penpa: You’ve done your homework but your biased, self-fish & conceited stance about Christian view & beliefs is the very reason y’all can’t make the connection, as to why Dorje Shugdon is banned. I’m not a Christian or a Buddhist affiliated but am loyal to my Tibetan heritage,100%! Christians have been exposing this evil agenda for decades, to help awaken people regardless of whatever religion, due to their faith being attacked by luciferians. So, what contribution have y’all made in helping to expose this evil agenda on our planet, other than your only concern for your personal belief?

          • Penpa on Feb 22, 2016 at 5:27 pm

            @Tempa,

The Dalai lama should stop interfering in the Dorje Shugden spiritual practice that has a history of four hundred years. It has only created pain and suffering and not unification but separation. He should accept all Tibetans for who they are not and not who they worship.

He and his government has created so many self-made problems to name a few:

            1. Dalai Lama’s corrupt government in exile being called out for unfair practices and corruption. Read the letter from US Congressman Dana Rohrabacher where he accuses of Dalai Lama’s government of unfair practices carefully. Financial aid to Tibetan government is lessening. Less governments want to be seen with Dalai Lama.

            2. Drukchen Rinpoche is asking the sectarian practices of Karma Kagyu school to stop.

            3. Jonangpa in Dharamasala fighting for fair representation as they are suppressed: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3XvjvIuN1w0

            4. In house fighting of Karma Kagyus: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tFxphAVnRFo

            5. Karmapa money scandal in India and all over the media: http://www.nytimes.com/2011/12/09/world/asia/17th-karmapa-charged-in-india-over-illegal-currency.html?_r=0

This is just to name a few. It’s just Dorje Shugden’s issue is high profile, but many people both Tibetans and non-Tibetans are very unhappy with Dalai Lama and his government in exile. So many scandals and sectarianism.

So many horrendous things being done. And by the people right under the Dalai Lama and close to the Dalai Lama. This does not make him look good at all.

            Religious freedom for all.

Wonderful good news to learn about this first of its kind progressive campaign to help the stray animals in Malaysia by the Sultan and Permaisuri of Selangor. While stray animals can be a nuisance to the public at large but bear in mind, the strays do not have a choice, and we have a role to play. Neutering strays is a humane and compassionate ways of resolving the program of stray animals in the long run because it largely reduces the numbers of strays on the streets. Neutering and proving proper shelters to strays can prevent thousands of animals from being born, only to suffer and struggle to survive on the streets, be abused by cruel or neglectful people, or be euthanized inhumanely. I have read somewhere that says spaying and neutering makes a big difference: Just one unaltered female dog and her offspring can produce 67,000 puppies in only six years. In seven years, one female cat and her offspring can produce an incredible 370,000 kittens!

Humans and animals, as well as other sentient beings within the six realms of samsara, are subjected to the law of cyclic of existence. Karma or generally known as the law of cause and effect will determine where we take our next rebirth. It is extremely rare for sentient beings to take the form of a human body and in perfect condition. Hence we must not let this precious lifetime go to waste by indulging in silly actions and harmful ways. If we are born in the animals realms or lower, there is close to zero way for us to collect merits and get out of that realm.

From the stories above, I find the story about Dalawong most unusual because he seemed to be able to determine the destination of his next rebirth after he was being killed as a snake. After he had taken rebirth in human form, he continued to remember the incident in his past life. Amazing!

Thank you, Rinpoche, for sharing these researches with us.

Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this article about tsa tsa. Didn’t know there are many steps and holy materials used in making a tsa tsa. In addition, the maker of tsa tsa would need to do prayer in the morning depending of what tsa tsa they are making on the day, for example, the maker will do Dorje Shugden practise before making Dorje Shugden tsa tsa.

Only by knowing the process, we will appreciate the items more. Tsa tsa is a precious item.

Dalawong: A Child Recalls a Past Life as a Cobra in Thailand

This case was actually researched by the late Francis Story, a British citizen who was fascinated with Buddhism and spent many years in Asia. He was also very interested in the topic of reincarnation and assisted Dr. Stevenson in investigating a number of very important reincarnation cases in Burma and Sri Lanka. Francis interviewed the subject of this case, a Thai boy named Dalowong, along with his father, mother and sister. He also had access to a pamphlet that was previously published regarding the case, which was also summarized in an article in the Bangkok Times.

Dalawong actually claimed two past animal incarnations. He recalled a past lifetime as a deer, which he said was killed by a hunter. Subsequently, he stated he was reincarnated as a snake, more specifically, as a cobra.

As the snake, Dalawong remembered that he was in a cave when two dogs entered and attacked him. A ferocious struggle ensued between the cobra and the dogs. The owner of the dogs then entered the cave and killed the snake. Apparently, the snake was able to bite the human invader on the shoulder, prior to succumbing to death.

The human took the cobra’s body back home, where the snake was cooked for a meal. This man shared the snake meat with an acquaintance, who would become Dalawong’s father in the near future. The man who killed the cobra had the name Mr. Hiew.

The sculpture of Kuan Yin in Macau is simple but elegant. Most importantly, this big Kuan Yin in Macau is built to bring peace, harmony and prosperity to the people.

I remember Rinpoche mentioned before a big Buddha statue will have positive impact on the environment and plant the Buddha’s seeds in all sentient beings that not only humans but also including animals and many others. Therefore, the bigger Buddha statue the more beneficial to all sentient beings where they can see and be blessed by this big Buddha statue from far.

Krishnan’s effort and hard work in contributing to the society is very inspiring. He is willing to let go of his high paying job to Switzerland and staying back in India to operate a soup kitchen for homeless. On top of that he is willing to accept the hardship of financial restraint every month in maintaining his service for the people living in the street. I hope his good work will bring more awareness and sponsors for him especially when CNN showed the video of his work and awarded him with top 10 CNN heroes.

According to the Buddhist teachings, we all have a unique blend of karma that determines where we are born, the circumstances of our birth and the quality of our life. Naturally, this is due to the actions that we performed in previous lives. Karma also dictates our characteristics and traits that determine how we act throughout our lives, which in turn leads to certain outcomes in this life and a determination of where we will take rebirth in the future.

Karma, however, is not set in stone. We can change our circumstances through our own efforts – purification of karma and accumulation of merit. Tibetan astrology, based on these Buddhist principles, provides us the methods to ensure success in this life and a good rebirth in the future. Tibetan astrology can also predict what will happen to us in this life and our next rebirth based on the time of our birth.

Discover your traits according to the Mewa, or Magical Square system of Tibetan astrology below, and find out how to purify your negative karma to improve your life!

    Very interesting:

Radin explained in his book: “For a Western-trained academic, the mere existence of, say, telepathy would be considered supernormal and thus wildly extraordinary. But for an experienced yogi, it’s just a boringly normal minor siddhi [a Sanskrit term for a meditation attainment, or power]. A skeptical scientist, not having the benefit of thousands of hours of practice in yoga and meditation, would require repeatable, rigorously obtained experimental data showing odds against chance of a gazillion to one. The yogi merely requires his own experience.”

This Mahasiddha is Kukkuripa (the dog lover). He loved dogs so much. When he meditated in the cave he had his doggie with him. She had kept him company for years in his cave. They shared bedding, food, water and company. When he gained high attainments, the Dakinis came to take him to Kechara Paradise. He was hesitant to go but the Dakinis insisted and he went with them.

He arrived at Kechara (Paradise/Buddha abode of Heruka and Vajra Yogini) and enjoyed teachings and feasts up there and they asked him to stay longer if not forever…. But he kept thinking about his doggie left alone in the cave. He felt guilty and missed her. Kukkuripa would use his psychic powers to see his poor doggie alone and hungry waiting for him at the cave while enjoying the attention of the Dakinis and feasts. The cave was dark and had no food. The doggie had to go out and find small tiny scraps of food and was getting skinny. Kukkuripa saw this and it pained him. Worried she was not getting enough food. He use to share the offerings of food he would get from people with her. Doggie and him would delightfully eat the food together. Kukkuripa had no attachments to ‘clean’ or ‘dirty’ in regards to sharing food with his dog. He had overcome this in his meditations. In ancient India, people would not co-habitate with a dog. It was considered unclean and filthy, but Kukkuripa had cast away those notions and loved his dog as she loved him. But he felt guilty to leave her alone while he was ‘enjoying’ himself in Kechara and could not stop thinking about his beloved dirty smelly dog in his cave alone…so he left Kechara Paradise and all it’s ‘delights’ for his doggie. He couldn’t abandon her. The Dakinis implored him to stay, but he was firm to return. The Dakinis said you will give up this paradise here for a mere dog???!! You can advance further in your meditations if you stay in Kechara and then help the dog later they attempted to persuade him. But Kukkuripa would not stay, he was loyal to his little dog as she had kept him company for many years in the lonely dark cave. She was loyal to him and how can he abandon her now. He couldn’t and he wouldn’t listen to the Dakinis. He left to join doggie. He never forget her companionship and loyalty. All the wonderful things in Kechara could not tempt him against his loyal friend the little doggie. He left everything for her.

So he finally left Kechara to the Dakinis dismay and went back to his cave to be with his dog so she won’t be alone. Doggie was delighted to see her master and wagged her tail so much!! She licked him and he hugged her! She was skinnier for not eating well these few days he noticed. He fed her and hugged her and loved his doggie…He went back to his routine of meditation, receiving food offerings and sharing his food with doggie. They were happy together. One day, when he was scratching her in her favorite place and she licked him so his eyes were closed, when he opened his eyes she had suddenly turned into a Dakini shimmering with lights! The brilliance of the lights lit up the whole cave in front of Kukkuripa!! Kukkuripa was astonished to behold the splendourous lady in front of him! Of course this Dakini must be the Queen Herself he realized, as Vajra Yogini which was Kukkuripa’s main Yidam he had meditated on her for years in the cave. And She said to Kukkuripa, “Well done, you gave up paradise to be with just a dog..it shows you have given up attachements and projections of pleasant and unpleasant, now your Dakini will give you the final paradise (enlightenment)!”

Kukkuripa attained full enlightenment blessed by Vajra Yogini by releasing the final subtle attachment to the non-existent self! After enlightenment his fame and name grew and many came to see him and he gave teachings to countless and benefitted many before he finally ascended to Kechara the second and final time. He was forever known as Kukkuripa the dog lover.

I love him so much!!! This is one of my favorite Mahasiddhas along with Badrapa, Shantideva, Ghantapa and a few others. I wanted to share this story with you. I wanted you to know that there are many great true stories like this one about Kukkuripa that are true and can be applied to our lives. To inspire us.

The great and illustrious master Sonam Tsemo at the end of his life was described by an old woman who witnessed Sonam Tsemo depart. Standing on a rock at the holy spring near Sakya area known as Chumik Dzingka, his body ascended gracefully into the sky, still holding his dog. He loved his dog very much. Even today the footprints of Loppon Sonam Tsemo and the dog can be clearly seen in the rock, left for the benefit of living beings as a field from which to accumulate merit. It is a sign of a holy being when they can leave their footprints in stone for future generations to witness and make offerings on that spot to collect merits. This holy site was decorated by the great master Mantradhara Ngawang Kunga Rinchen later on. Other accounts say that he ascended from Gorum Library near Chumik Dzingka spring. A stupa containing his holy relics was erected there. Sonam Tsemo was a powerful practitioner of the Lady Buddha Vajra Yogini and at the end of his short life he ascended with his very body to Kechara paradise. He was 40 years old. Kechara is the sanksrit name of the special abode of Vajra Yogini. Those who practice Vajra Yogini to the highest level can ascend her paradise with their very bodies. Sonam Tsemo the great master of sutra and tantra was seen by an old woman flying off holding his beloved dog to ascend Kechara paradise. No one every found his body and his room was empty.

Congratulations to Mitra for his first dharma teaching in Nepali to the expats. So glad that Dorje Shugden practise can reach out to many in various languages and to different people. Mitra has done a good job in introducing Lama Tsongkhapa lineage and guided them on the benefit and iconography of Dorje Shugden.

May Lama Tsongkhapa lineage and Dorje Shugden practise continue to grow and benefit more people.

The Unknown

The Known and unknown are both feared,
Known is being comfortable and stagnant,
The unknown may be growth and opportunities,
One shall never know if one fears the unknown more than the known.
Who says the unknown would be worse than the known?
But then again, the unknown is sometimes worse than the known. In the end nothing is known unless we endeavour,
So go pursue all the way with the unknown,
because all unknown with familiarity becomes the known.

Pick the practice, devotion and precepts of Vajra Yogini\'s path over everything and anything in samsara. Samsara has nothing of value and nothing lasting to offer. You are born in suffering, live in suffering, die in suffering and enter bardo and future lives expecting more sufferings. This is not a negative way of looking at things but the truth. If the truth is negative, so it is the truth. Devote oneself to the guru, dharma work, dharma practice and bringing dharma to others compassionately. Lia asked: If the ushnisha is actually supposed to be a bump, then do we change the visualization of the top knot and replace it with a bump covered in hair or do we keep the ushnisha as the thangkas show?

Dongho asked: I have been reading on the tunes of certain sects and would like to ask on this. From what I've read, there are certain tunes to each sect and school of certain chants. Exactly where can I find the sheet music for these percussion and horns with the chants, such as to the one for invoking Kache Marpo or Dorje Shugden? Would it be possible to use school instruments for this?
pastor answered: Dear Dongho, Thank you for your question, it is good to see you back and asking more questions. Yes you are right, there are differences in the tunes and chants between the lineages. The differences can vary significantly between the traditions, for example the Gelugpa tradition of Tibetan Buddhism is known for its extremely deep throat singing which is very powerful and is characterised by a low, booming voice, in contrast to the other traditions. Even within a particular tradition, there can be slight variations as to the manner in which the chants and tunes are performed. For example those monasteries are which are affiliated with Gyume will have one way of throat singing, where those affiliated with Gyuto will have another. As far as I am aware there is no professional sheet music for the rituals, most probably because the music is actually an integral part of the ritual itself. Therefore the music, tunes, and chants are all taught at the same time the ritual and prayers are. The tunes, and use of the instruments all have specific meanings, because they are considered to be offerings to the deities in the form of sound. The monasteries would not have copies of sheet music either, because sheet music is western practice. The use of ritual music within Tibetan Buddhism is more of one based on memory. In the Kechara organisation, the puja team was trained in such ritual instruments at the same time they learnt the particular ritual from monks from the monastery, such as the puja of Dorje Shugden. From what I saw of the training, the musical tunes, and use of instruments was not written down but taught experientially at the same time as the chanting. I have not come across any other instruments being used in pujas apart from the traditional ritual instruments, because even the instruments themselves have a specific meaning. That is not say that school instruments cannot be used. This is because, as long as the offering is sincere, the Buddhas and enlightened deities will accept it, and in turn you will generate great amounts of merit. Offerings should be made to the best of our ability, therefore if you do not have access to the ritual instruments, or do not know how to play them, but you know how to play other instruments, and use these instruments as offerings to the Buddhas during pujas, the amount of merit you generate will be the same. This is because you are sincere with your offering. I hope this helps. Thank you.

Kunga asked: Does the Gelug have Begtse a protector? If so, could you please provide a sadhana for him here?
pastor answered: Dear Kunga, Yes the Dharma protector Begtse exists within the Gelug tradition. He is also known as Chamsing. Begtse’s practice stems from India and was introduced to Tibet and therefore Tibetan Buddhism by the translator Nyen Lotsawa. Marpa Lotsawa also practiced Begtse, and so the practice exists in the Kagyu traditions. This practice was eventually transmitted to Sachen Kunga Nyingpo, the first of the five patriarchs of the Sakya tradition, who were the founding fathers of that tradition. Over time the practice of Begtse was incorporated into the Gelug tradition, founded by Lama Tsongkhapa, and was notably practiced by the 1st and 2nd Dalai Lamas. Over time the practice gained popularity within the lineage, especially when it spread to Mongolia. There the practice became an important one within the lineage as upheld there. Begtse is also affectionately known as the Dharma protector of Mongolia, because his practice is so popular there. If I am not mistaken, there is an oracle of Begtse in Mongolia as well. There is a mistaken account that the practice originated around the time of the 3rd Dalai Lama, with the subjugation of a Mongolian war god, but Begtse was definitely practiced before that time in the Gelug, Kagyu and Sakya traditions. While the practice of Begtse is very effective, I have not come across the practice of Begtse in my personal practice, therefore I do not have access to the Begtse sadhana to provide to you. Instead Begtse is propitiated in prayers that incorporate many other Dharma protectors, and Begtse is also considered one of the nine protectors of the Hayagriva (Tamdrin) cycle of tantric teachings. Therefore Begtse is included in the Dharma protector sections of the Hayagriva tantras. Surrounding Begtse are his sister, Sing Ma, and his main minister, Le Khan Mar Po. His inner retinue comprises of eight butchers who wield copper swords in their right hands and skull-cups full of blood in their left hands. They are portrayed as naked and are very ugly. His outer retinue comprises a further twenty-one butchers, who hold copper swords in their right hands, and this time, the entrails of butchered enemies. They wear the skins humans and oxen as clothes, with ornaments made from human bone. While this may seem violent, Begtse is actually a very powerful and beneficial protector, who helps practitioners clear their obstacles and create conducive conditions for their spiritual evolution. I hope this helps. Thank you.

Azair asked: Venerable Rinpoche, I am doing a study in Kalachakra Tantra and I've heard from most of the lama's too that if you practice the Kalachakra Tantra, you'll be able to take control of your next rebirth. Ofcourse, it has been said that we will get our rebirth according to our Karma and desires but whether those dreams will get fulfilled will depend upon the actions that we take in this life. Thus, practicing the Kalachakra(till the end) after initiation will give you the opportunity to take rebirth anywhere you desire regardless of your Karma. My question is that, is there some truth in this statement.? Does this statement hold true for other tantra practices, such as Vajrayogini Tantra, Ghuyasamaja Tantra, Heruka Tantra, etc. I would really really like to know. Thankyou in anticipation, regards, Azair
pastor answered: Dear Azair, Thank you for your question. Yes there is truth to this statement, both from a scriptural perspective and also by example, as the great masters have shown us. This is a unique feature of all Anuttarayoga Tantras or Highest Yoga Tantras, which Kalachakra, Vajrayogini, Guhyasama and Heruka are all examples of. This category of tantric practice can actually lead a practitioner to full enlightenment in this very lifetime. Even if enlightenment is not reached, very high levels of attainment can be reached nonetheless. This includes the ability to take control over your next rebirth. This is primarily engaged in so that the practitioner is born in an environment where they can eventually pick up their practice and further their spiritual path to enlightenment, or in order to be born in a place where they can benefit sentient beings the most, as part of the spiritual journey over many lifetimes. One of the reasons such an ability is very necessary on the spiritual path, is that usual death and rebirth occurs at the mercy of ones karma, specifically what is known as the ‘throwing karma’ or the karma that dictates what sort of rebirth a person is going to take. This opens up at the time of ordinary death, which most people have no control over. During the death process, many of our disturbing emotions will arise. Whichever of these is the strongest at the point of death triggers open a latent karmic potential, which becomes the ‘throwing karma’ and dictates where we are going to take rebirth and if that life will generally be full of suffering or not. Within Anuttarayoga Tantra, one of the key points of practice is to prepare for one’s death. This is done by simulating the dying process during one’s meditations, so that one becomes familiar with it. At the most pivotal part of this process, one practices achieving either the rainbow body or great bliss (in the case of the father tantras); or clear light (in the case of mother tantras). The tantras themselves are not defined in terms of the gender of the central deity, but by the method used to gain enlightenment. This is either the rainbow body/great bliss (classified as male, therefore labelled ‘father’) or clear light (classified as female, therefore labelled ‘mother’). Non-dual tantras such as the Kalachakra tantra can employ either of the two methods, a mixture of both, or alternate methods. In the case of superior practitioners, due to the power of their practice, they can achieve either of these two methods in their current body. Since they have familiarised themselves with the dying process, and a particular method of practice, they can also achieve enlightenment during their physical death. The great Lama Tsongkhapa is said to have achieved enlightenment at the moment of physical death, using the second of these. For other practitioners, they may not be able to achieve this either in their meditations while they are alive, or during the death process. However because they have familiarised themselves with the dying process, they remain in complete concentration at the time of death, not allowing any disturbing emotions to arise. Due to this level of concentration, meditation and awareness during the dying process, they are able to control where they next take rebirth. This is evident in the tantric scriptures themselves, and the life stories of many masters, who can state exactly where, when and to whom they will take their next rebirth, as they are in full control of the dying and rebirth process. There is a type of meditation called ‘thukdam’ which has been translated into ‘death meditation’. This is a final meditation some masters choose to engage in. During this meditation, the master themselves consciously begin the physical dying process themselves, engage in the meditation of dissolving the winds into the heart centre and remain in the most pivotal part of the death process, the mind of clear light of death. During this point they engage in meditations, either the methods of the father or mother tantras as mentioned previously, and or consciously choose where they are to next take rebirth. They can remain in this death meditation for long periods of time, days at an end, in which their consciousness has not yet left their body, although for all intents and purposes they are dead according to medical science, e.g. they have no heartbeat. At the end of their meditation, a drop of blood will be emitted from their nostril, and their head will slump over a little. Masters who engage in this meditation usually sit in full meditation posture, and their body remain supple and soft even though they have passed away from a medical point of view. I hope this brief explanation helps. Thank you.

Brad asked: What is the significance of offering the Seven precious emblems of royalty to the Buddhas and enlightened Dharma Protectors? What are we symbolically offering up?
pastor answered: Dear Brad, Thank you for your question. The ‘saptaratna’ or seven precious emblems represent on the one hand the ultimate state of temporal power, and on the other hand the ultimate spiritual attainments that we can achieve. By offering these to the Buddhas, we are actually creating the causes to achieve what they represent. Therefore it is good to know the meaning of each, so we can understand what we are creating the causes for by offering them up: Please see below for an explanation of the seven royal emblems: 1. The Precious Wheel: a thousand spoked wheel, representing the universal power of the Buddhas, as well as the teachings of the thousand Buddhas of our aeon. It is represented by the Dharmachakra, symbolising the ‘turning of the wheel’ or teaching of the Noble Eightfold Path. It is a symbol of a universal emperor’s spiritual and temporal power. It is also represents one of the factors of enlightenment, which is perfect mindfulness, especially that of our own mind, thoughts, delusions and afflictions. 2. The Precious Jewel: an eight sided wish-granting gem, which fulfils all the needs of a universal emperor. This jewel has eight special qualities: it illuminates the night sky for hundreds of leagues; it is cooling when the temperature is hot and warming when the temperature is cold; it makes manifest whatever the holder wants; when thirsty it causes a fresh-water spring to appear; it has the ability to control the nagas, and other supernatural beings, as well as preventing natural disasters such as storms, floods, etc.; it gives off multi-coloured lighted which heals the various mental and emotional afflictions; it cures all illnesses; and it ensures that one dies a natural death, not an untimely one. It is a symbol of a universal emperor’s spiritual and temporal power. It is also represents one of the factors of enlightenment, which is perfect mindfulness, or perfect discrimination, so one knows what to abandon and what to keep in the mindstream during the spiritual journey to enlightenment. 3. The Precious Queen: the most beautiful and virtuous of all women. She is described as a goddess who is the epitome of someone: with devotion; without jealousy; who is the embodiment of fertility; who works for the welfare of all beings; who possess feminine wisdom; speaks the truth; not attract to sensual pleasures or material possessions; and does not have false views. She is adored by all. She also represents one of the factors of enlightenment, which is perfect effort. This is necessary to keep meditating until one gains spiritual attainments. 4. The Precious Minister: who has sharp intelligence, patience, and the ability to give wise counsel to the emperor. He is so attuned to the emperor that even before the emperor has spoken, the minister is already carrying out his command. He only wishes to support the Dharma, help sentient beings, and is an excellent strategist. He also represents one of the factors of enlightenment, which is perfect joy. This is also akin to the attainment of the first bodhisattva level, because you have come to an understanding of your own mind, which is like pouring ice-cold water into boiling water. The water stops boiling, as does the thoughts, projections, and delusions in the mind. He represents the path of the bodhisattva. 5. The Precious Elephant: who has the strength of a thousand normal elephants. He is white, with the perfect features that an elephant could have. He is majestic, graceful, and gentle, but in battle is fearsome, fearless and unyielding. He communicates with the emperor through a telepathic link. He represents one of the factors of enlightenment, which is perfect adaptability. This is important, as one needs to be able to adapt to the various mental afflictions as they arise, and suitably counter them. 6. The Precious Horse: who has all the marks of a celestial horse. Known as wind-horse, he is able to travel extremely fast, and can circumambulate the entire universe three time in just a single day. He is never fearful or startled, never makes a sound when galloping, and has extremely soft hairs on his body. He represents one of the factors of enlightenment, which is single-pointed concentration. This is important because without this form of concentration, once cannot engage in the analytical meditations that lead to an understanding of emptiness, and therefore enlightenment. 7. The Precious General: who has mastered the arts of war and always wins in battle. He wears battle armour and holds many different weapons. He tries to avoid battle, but when necessary fights, and never gives up until he has won. He is fearless, and courageous in carrying out the emperors commands and ensures the emperors army carries out their duties. He represents one of the factors of enlightenment, which is perfect equanimity. This is because he overcomes all warfare, which is akin to the battle between things were are attached to and things we have an aversion for in our minds. In short, what you are offering up is the highest of all temporal treasures and abilities, as well as the entire path of the Dharma. Doing so creates the causes for you to receive all of this on your spiritual journey towards enlightenment. I hope this helps. Thank you.
