In the language of the Karuk natives, Mt Shasta is known as Úytaahkoo or ‘White Mountain’. It is an active volcano located at the southern tip of the Cascade Range in the Siskiyou County of Northern California. With an elevation of 14,179 feet (4321.8 m), this mountain is the second highest peak in the Cascades and the fifth highest in the State of California.

According to archaeologists, the oldest excavated human habitation in the area dates to about 7,000 years ago. It was roughly 5,000 years ago that the area was significantly inhabited, as shown by the substantial excavation of human habitation in the surrounding area. In the 1820s, the Native American tribes who lived within view of Mt Shasta included the Shasta, Okwanuchu, Modoc, Achomawi, Atsugewi, Karuk, Klamath, Wintu and Yana tribes.

Origins of Mt Shasta’s Name

Shasta3

Shasta is a generic Sanskrit term meaning ‘a teacher’. According to early records dated around 1826-27, Peter Skene Ogden referred to a mountain, a tribe, and a river as ‘Sastice’, ‘Castice’, ‘Sistise’ and ‘Sasty’. He also named Mt McLoughlin of Southern Oregon as Sastise. It is also widely believed that the Wilkes Expedition (1838-42) mistakenly thought that Mt Shasta was actually Ogden’s Sastise.

During the time of the Gold Rush (1849), most maps of the time had a variety of names for Mt Shasta, including ‘Shasty’, ‘Shaste’ and ‘Sasty’. It was between 1842 and 1850 a number of journals and maps listed the mountain as Saste, Sasty, Shaste, Shasty, Shatasla, Sastise, Castice, and Sistise. However, the modern standardised spelling of ‘Shasta’ did not appear until 1850 when the California State Legislature gave the name to ‘Shasta’ County. This name derived by having ‘a’ placed at the end to make it similar to many Spanish endings of other counties in California (usually ending with ‘a’ or an ‘o’).

Native American Lore Surrounding Mt Shasta

According to Klamath Native Indian lore, Mt Shasta played a major role in their mythology. The Klamath people lived in the region of Mt Mazama on the Oregon-side of the Cascade Range as early as 7,700 years ago. This estimate has been made due to artifacts, comprising of obsidian tools, spears, and moccasins, having been excavated beneath the ash layers of Mt Mazama. The Klamath elders describe the catastrophic eruption of Mt Mazama that created Crater Lake in one of their legends. Their lore tells of a raging war waged between the spirits of two great volcanoes, Mt Mazama and Mt Shasta.

The Klamath people believed that the spirits of the earth and sky often appeared and talked with the people. Klamath lore speaks of Llao, who was the spirit of the ‘Below-World’ who lived in the subterranean world beneath Lao-Yaina (Mt Mazama today). On the other hand, Skell was the spirit of the ‘Above-World’. Llao often emerged from his underground world and perched on the peak of Lao-Yaina, and it was said that his head would reach and touch the stars near the home of Skell.

The lake was not even formed at that time; it was just a hole through which Llao emerged from in order to see the outside world. One day while perched high above, Llao beheld Loha, the beautiful daughter of the Klamath Indian chief, and fell in love with her. She spurned him because he was ugly and was from the ‘Below-World’. He was enraged and swore that he would take revenge on her people. He sought to destroy her people with the curse of fire from Lao-Yaina. Fearing for their safety, the Klamath Indian chief sought the assistance of Skell.

Therefore, Skell descended from the sky to the top of Mt Shasta to confront Llao. Thus began the fiery battle between Skell and Llao. The sky thundered and the earth trembled as both spirits hurled fiery rocks back and forth at each other (from Mount Shasta to Mount Mazama). An ashen darkness hung over the area for days. All the spirits of earth and sky became embroiled in this battle and therefore created intense fear among the people.

In order to appease the ferocious volcano spirits and to make up for the sins of the tribe, two medicine men sacrificed themselves by jumping into the pit of ‘Below-World’. Impressed by their heroic sacrifice, Skell fought even harder. He finally vanquished Llao and drove him deep down into the Below-World. He toppled the peak of Mt Mazama in order to imprison Llao forever beneath the earth. To conclude the battle, Skell, wanting peace and tranquillity to cover up this dark pit, filled it with pristine blue water.

Non-Native Legends Surrounding Mt Shasta

Shasta6

Since the turn of the 20th century, Mt Shasta has become the focal point of New Age practitioners from all over the world. This attraction has come about for a variety of reasons, but particularly for the legends of Lemuria.

JC Brown

According to Leland Lovelace in his book Lost Mines and Hidden Treasures, JC Brown was a British prospector employed by the Lord Cowdray Mining Company of London to look for gold in the mountains of Northern California.

JC Brown claimed to have discovered the entrance to Lemuria

JC Brown claimed to have discovered the entrance to Lemuria

It was said that he discovered a lost underground city beneath Mt Shasta in 1904. At that time, he discovered a cave which sloped downwards for 11 miles. At the end of the tunnel, he found an underground village filled with gold, strange hieroglyphics, shields and mummies, some being up to 10 feet tall. It was said that he left everything as it was and left the cave. The next 30 years of his life are shrouded in mystery.

What we do know is that during this time, he had studied literature, philosophy and in particular accounts of the lost continent of Mu and the lost civilisation of Lemuria. After 30 years, he resurfaced and told his story to John C. Root who proceeded to gather an exploration team in Stockton, California. It was said that 80 people joined the team but on the day the team was to set out, Brown did not show up and he was never heard from again. He was said to have died and been buried in Nevada in 1936.

As he never disclosed the location of the entrance to the cave, his secret died with him. However, many people today remain convinced that JC Brown had actually discovered the entrance into Lemuria or what is left of it.

The Lemurian and Atlantean Connection

The Scientific Origins of Lemuria

Lemuria is the name of a hypothetical ‘lost land’ that sunk beneath the ocean somewhere between the Indian and Pacific Oceans. In 1864, zoologist and biogeographer Philip Sclater first proposed the theory of a lost continent in an article titled ‘The Mammals of Madagascar’ in The Quarterly Journal of Science.

Shasta9

He was writing about lemurs and related primate groups. In the article he states that he found it puzzling that fossilised remains of lemurs were found in both Madagascar and India but not in Africa or in the Middle East. He then proposed the theory that Madagascar and India could have once been part of a larger continent that he called Lemuria. He was right on that account but it was actually the supercontinent Pangaea and not Lemuria. Unfortunately, the modern theory of tectonic plates and continental drift has rendered the theory of Lemuria obsolete by the larger scientific community.

Shasta10

According to this new theory, Madagascar and India were part of the same landmass which explains their many geological resemblances. However, tectonic plate movement caused India to break away millions of years ago, and move to its present location. The supercontinent Pangaea over time broke into smaller supercontinents. Madagascar and India were once part of the supercontinent Gondwana. This landmass did not sink beneath the sea but Madagascar and India did separate. Sunken continents do exist such as Zealandia in the Pacific as well as Mauritia and the Kerguelen Plateau in the Indian Ocean, but there is no known sunken continent under the Indian or Pacific Oceans that corresponds to the descriptions of Lemuria.

Legend of Lemuria

Although the theory of Lemuria’s existence has since been rendered obsolete by newer scientific theories, the spiritual and New Age community continue to embrace it. Since the theory was first presented there have been many spiritualists around the world who believe in the legend.

Shasta11

In 1931, Wishar S. Cerve published a book titled Lemuria – The Lost Continent of the Pacific. He studied archaeology, geology, meteorology and dedicated 10 years of his life to research. During that time, he gathered many ancient manuscripts and maps as research material. He based his book on the basis of this vast body of texts that he had amassed. In his book he suggests that mankind originated from the Lemurian race. Over the course of time, the environment and climate changed people’s appearance, habits and nature. A cataclysm struck the continent and many believed that Mt Shasta was the last refuge of the Lemurians who survived.

In his book, Cerve explained that 200,000 years ago the world looked radically different than it does today. At that time, North America, Europe, Africa, South America and Asia were joined together in a single landmass. However, much of this land was submerged under water or was swampland and thus uninhabitable. Around 150,000 years ago, these partially submerged lands were mapped out into crude ancient maps.

During that period, an ancient and prehistoric people lived on the continent of Lemuria, which was also called Mu. This continent became the cradle of human civilisation, a sort of Garden of Eden. It seems that most ancient records and tribes have a corresponding myth of the creation of man. This usually takes place in some sort of Garden of Eden. However, thousands of years later, magnetic waves began to move the earth from the east to the west, thus bringing tremendous change to the land. The Lemurians were believed to have kept detailed records.

A map that shows the hypothetical location of the lost continents of Lemuria and Atlantis.

A map that shows the hypothetical location of the lost continents of Lemuria and Atlantis.

In the book, the landmass that connected Asia with Africa began to sink beneath the sea while the landmass that is now Europe began to rise higher. The landmass that would eventually become the American continent separated and drifted apart. As the American continent drifted westbound, it joined with the mountainous eastern coast of Lemuria while the rest of Lemuria became submerged under water. Thus, Washington, Oregon, California, parts of Nevada, Arizona and Mexico are what remained of the eastern coast of Lemuria.

Therefore, the surviving Lemurians had remained in the area surrounding Mt Shasta, which has the closest weather to that of the old Lemuria. According to Cerve, Lemurians were very much like people today. They even had public schools and medical doctors. They lived in big and airy homes and they cooked their food over fire or in special sun ovens. They had public swimming pools and bathing pavilions, in which both sexes freely mingled as they had no issues about nudity.

Interestingly, they believed in reincarnation and were not afraid of death. Therefore, they did not seek to prolong their lives. It was customary for Lemurians to announce their passing to their loved ones and friends several days ahead of their actual death. Once they had passed on, their bodies were placed on sacred soil and a type of lime-like mineral was used to disintegrate the remains without polluting the soil. Lemurians had very advanced technology, capable of harnessing the forces of nature. For example, they were able to propel their boats by extracting energy from a single stone. They also had airships that were powered using the same technology.

The Lemurians had solar powered technology as well. While we have been gradually expanding the use of this technology, the Lemurians were using it freely and on a large scale throughout all their communities. They were able to store the energy from the sun and use it at night for light, heating and as a source of energy for their equipment. By day, they used it for many things including big machines that moved huge items including megalithic stone and wood pieces.

Lemurians are said to have ventured beyond their land on great ships to Africa and colonised the Nile River. There they became the progenitors of the ancient Egyptian civilisation. They had also travelled to what is modern day Texas, Mexico and Yucatan in order to settle these new lands. Those settlers are commonly known as ‘Maya’ and in fact, Maya was what Lemurians called themselves. Hence, the Lemurians became the progenitors of the Mayan civilisation, one of the most advanced cultures in the world at that time.

The Mayans built magnificent pyramid temple structures, one over 200 feet high and two smaller ones. The Mayans had their capital in Chichen Itza when they suddenly disappeared and nobody knows why. From archaeological evidence, they left in a hurry, leaving pots on the hearths and ploughs in the field. What remains of the Mayan structures were unearthed under thick jungle foliage. Archaeologists have since reconstructed their buildings but are unable to conclusively explain what happened to the mighty Mayan civilisation and what led to its disappearance. Perhaps, they were fleeing another cataclysm yet again.

A depiction of a Lemurian lady

A depiction of a Lemurian lady

Although the presence of Lemurians has never been conclusively proven, since Cerve’s book was published, there have been a number of sightings of strange people around the area of Mt Shasta. They seem to disappear at will, which is an ability possessed by Lemurians. They tend to avoid attention and when they do make the occasional purchase in shops nearby, they pay for the merchandise with gold nuggets.

Lemurians are said to be tall, graceful, slender and with long flowing hair and adorned with white robes and sandals. They look just like any ordinary person except for a walnut-sized protrusion on their large foreheads. This protrusion is actually an organ to facilitate extra sensory perception. Hence, the Lemurians are psychic and possess powers of telepathy. It is said that humans, as descendants of Lemurians do not have this organ. Over time, due to lack of use, the organ disappeared.

The Atlantean Connection

In another book by Dr M Doreal called Mysteries of Mount Shasta, he wrote that the inhabitants of Mt Shasta were originally people from the lost continent of Atlantis.

Northern California, where Mt Shasta stands, is actually one of the most ancient lands on earth. During the cataclysm that destroyed Atlantis and Lemuria, the survivors of Atlantis fled to what is now known as Northern California and formed a colony within Mt Shasta itself. However, over time the population gradually decreased. Dr M Doreal, the author, claimed to have visited this colony in Mt Shasta. On his last visit their population was just 353 Atlanteans.

Shasta15

On the other hand, the Lemurians escaped underground and created huge pleasure cities using their advanced technology that harnessed energies from the sun and moon. They were able to light and heat their great subterranean cities with this technology, which is beyond our own technological achievements. They even knew about atomic energy and the technology to harness it.

Apparently, a great war occurred between the Atlanteans and the Lemurians. The Lemurians lost the war and their entire people, consisting of the Lemurian royalty, priesthood, noblemen and ordinary citizens, were forced to retreat down into their subterranean cities and live out their lives in captivity. The Atlanteans sealed the entrance and established a surveillance system that prevented any Lemurians from escaping. The Atlanteans had cigar-shaped ships that sentry guards used to patrol the area of Mt Shasta. This is the theory used to explain the cigar-shaped UFO sightings around Mt Shasta.

The Atlantean colony is in a huge cavern 7 miles beneath Mt Shasta.

The Atlantean colony is in a huge cavern 7 miles beneath Mt Shasta.

According to Dr Doreal, seven miles beneath Mt Shasta is a cavern that is 20 miles wide and 10,000 feet high. This is where the Atlantean colony lived and is illuminated by a single light source from above the cavern that is said to be light collected from sun and moon rays. The Atlanteans built magnificent homes and structures that are said to have been more dazzling than the finest from ancient Greece. They grew vegetables and fruits and had unique animals in the cavern that were originally from Atlantis.

The Atlanteans did not need to eat but they did so purely for pleasure. This is because the same technology that supplied the cavern, homes and structures with light was also used to nourish their bodies. They also lived relatively long lives of around 150 years. Dr Doreal explained that the last stop of his tour with them was at a temple. This was a temple of learning. He was chosen to be brought to this temple in order to awaken mankind to the awareness of mysteries beyond matter – life itself.

The Ascended Masters: Count of St Germain and Phylos the Tibetan

Guy Warren Ballard and his wife Edna claimed to be in contact with the Ascendent Master, Count of St Germain on Mt Shasta.

Guy Warren Ballard and his wife Edna claimed to be in contact with the Ascendent Master, Count of St Germain on Mt Shasta.

Guy Warren Ballard (1878 – 1939) was an American mining engineer who together with his wife, Edna Anne Wheeler Ballard became the founder of the “I AM” Activity. Everything began when Guy Ballard visited Mt Shasta, California in 1930, where he met another hiker who mysteriously identified himself as the Ascended Master, Count of St. Germain.

Ballard’s subsequent experiences took place within the larger North American mountain ranges. Ballard explained his encounters in a series of books titled Unveiled Mysteries and The Magic Presence using the pen name ‘Godfré Ray King’. Guy Ballard, his wife Edna, and later his son Edona Eros ‘Donald’ Ballard (1918 – 1973) became the ‘sole Accredited Messengers’ of the Ascended Master St Germain. Their teachings form the core of what are today called the Ascended Master Teachings.

Nola Van Valer, a contemporary of Guy Ballard, visited Mt Shasta in 1930. She visited the mountain with her husband and some friends during the Great Depression. One day, a man dressed in a long robe appeared to her and she said he looked pure. He started talking to her and gave her teachings and explanations.

She did not have a recorder with her at that time, so she wrote everything down in shorthand. After that encounter, she continued to visit the mountain every year for next 10 years. She was led to a temple inside a cavern and it was there that Phylos the Tibetan would appear to her. Each time he gave her the ‘real teachings’ of the Bible as how it was originally written. Her teachings became the basis for The Radiant School of Seekers and Servers, which no longer exists today.

Conclusion

Mount Shasta is a favourite destination for mountain climbers, skiers, holidaymakers, spiritualists, New Age practitioners and so forth. The crowd are drawn there not just by its raw beauty but by the many legends and stories of Mt Shasta.

Shasta20

Aside from the Lemurians, Altanteans and mysterious Ascended Masters, Mt Shasta is also a hotbed of Bigfoot activity, and UFO sightings (particularly of the cigar-shaped variety). People claim that the lenticular clouds in the area cover huge alien spaceships when they make their landing. And all of this is not mentioned without bearing in mind Indian folklore of the origin of the place and how they regard the mountain to be a sacred ground for their powerful nature spirits. These are just some of the incredible legends surrounding this mountain. The mountain with its lenticular clouds continues to hold people spellbound by her beauty, power and promise of the supernatural.

In 2014, Tsem Rinpoche, myself along with Pastor Seng Piow, Pastor Jean Ai, JP and William were travelling up North California. We were on the freeway when Rinpoche saw the Mt Shasta signboard and we were all intrigued. Rinpoche decided to delay our travel plans for a few days and we veered off towards Mt Shasta. We didn’t know anything about it except for the fact that Mt Shasta was famous for its UFO and Bigfoot sightings. Needless to say, Rinpoche was quick to educate us about this. We found the Mt Shasta town a quaint little place with nice vegetarian-friendly restaurants, cafes, new age shops and so forth. During our stay, we drove up to the highest point of the foothill which was above snow level and did a wonderful Dorje Shugden puja (as you can see in the pictures).

Mount Shasta in Northern California is one of the site of several mysterious and pretty creepy legends for the indigenous Klamath people. These seemingly far-fetched tales that may or may not be true. Somehow it doesn’t change the fact that many people have been fascinated with Mount Shasta as long as they have known of its existence. Mountains are scared. Some mountains are known to be the abodes of some deities. This beautiful scenic snow mountain is no exception since Mt Shasta is full of spiritual seekers and very energised. This legendary Mt Shasta is truly mysterious and intriguing. Rinpoche was very kind to do a Dorje Shugden puja there to infuse positive energy and purify the environment there ,so when tourists and mountain climbers visiting Mt Shasta, they will be blessed by the world peace dharma protector. Thank you Pastor David for sharing this enlightening article.

This article is very interesting! Absolutely love the part on the ancient civilization of the Lemurians. From the description here, they seemed highly evolved and spiritual. They believed in reincarnation and could even announce their departure days ahead of their actual death. Lemurians relied on advance technologies which did not seem to create much pollutant and that powered their transportation and the societal utilities. Reading about the description of ancient Lemuria cities brought images of sci-fi movies alive. I wish we could have more info on ancient civilization, there are so much to learn about and from them. Thank you Pastor David for this interesting write up. I am sure Rinpoche and everyone enjoyed the ancient vibration of energy at the beautiful Mt Shasta.

It’s truly mysterious, intriguing and magnificient indeed, especially in accordance to what Dr. Doreal disclosed, “that Altanteans colony which is illuminated by a single light source from the above cavern, that is said to be light collected from the sun and moon rays. This carvan is 20 miles wide and 10,000 ft high, which is said to be where the Altanteans colony live, and the same technology that supplied the cavern, homes and structures with light, was also used to nourish their bodies. Most Altanteans were said to live long lives of around 150 years, even without food! Dr. Doreal was said to be specially choosen to be brought to this temple in order to awaken mankind to the awareness of mysteries beyond matter – life itself! Thank you so much Pastor David for enlightening us with such intriguing articles!

Such a beautiful and spiritual place. Mysterious and even though I have not been there, Mt. Shasta must be very energised.

So much mysteries and stories surrounds this place and that explain why today it is one of the centre of New Age Spirituality.

There are many things in the world that are quite difficult to explain and the Legends of Mount Shasta is one of it.

Thank You Pastor David of this article. I enjoyed it thoroughly. I hope to go there some time in the future.

Wow this is so intriguing and mysterious, perfect setting for a modern day sci-fi movie. Mt Shasta is truly breathtaking, the cloud formation strange but awe-inspiring. Mountains are sacred. In the Buddhist context, conducting a puja near or on a mountain is not that we worship the mountain, land or beings therein but to acknowledge they are there, show respect, to make offerings, bless the environment and sometimes, to appease. Some people may think it’s superstition or religious mumbo jumbo, but when there, one should never do anything or behave in a manner that disregards, disrespects the beings inhabiting the land or dececrate their environment.

Mt Shasta is truly beautiful and breath taking. It is a Mecca for spiritual seekers because it is one of the 7 vortexes on our planet. Mt Shasta is the root chakra of the planet.

Hence, the energy in this area is very conducive for meditation. One can get grounded very easily while meditating near Mt Shasta. I was very lucky to visit Mt Shasta with Tsem Rinpoche as Rinpoche performed a Dorje Shugden puja at the mid levels of Mt Shasta.

There are many spiritual centres around Mt Shasta, St Germain being one of the biggest and most established. I would highly recommend a visit to Mt Shasta.

Mt Shasta is very mysterious and full of legends, i believes that certain power places has specials portals and access to other world and beings. i hope that in this life time we are able to witness some of this account. Human knowledge is very limited, with the vastness and age of the universal developed since beginningless of time, There are so much more knowledge not known to human, and beyond our comprehension at this moment.

Thank you Pastor David for the enlightening story about Mt Shasta. Very interesting to know that Mt Shasta is the one place that is still in existence from the Lemurian times. Indeed Mt Shasta is very beautiful and spiritual. The quaint little town surrounding Mt Shasta is full of spiritual seekers and full of energy. When we were there at the foothill where Rinpoche performed a DS puja, we can feel gusts of wind blowing towards us when the puja was being done and when the puja completed, the air remained calm.

Very interesting stories Pastor David, thank you. This mountain is truly captivating and powerful and it is fascinating to read about the different myths and legends. I love such stories about Lumerian and the Altanteans. They actually kind sound like Aliens that occupied earth for a wee while and then disappeared.

The best part is that the Lumerians actually believe in reincarnation wow! I like the fact that how the Lemurians would to announce their passing to their loved ones and friends several days ahead of their actual death and how they view it as a natural transitional stage in life.

It is interesting how they had such an advanced technology where they could harness the forces of nature and use it to their own advantage. I mean if they were not aliens then what were they? How is it that they had solar powered technology during that time? While we have been gradually expanding the use of this technology, the Lemurians were using it freely and on a large scale throughout all their communities tells me they are an extremely advanced civilisation… spells aliens to me.

I also loved how described the Lumerians: Lemurians are said to be tall, graceful, slender and with long flowing hair and adorned with white robes and sandals. Over time, due to lack of use, the organ disappeared.—- Now if this does not spell ALIENS then what does?!

So this proves there are other different special beings in this planet of ours and perhaps still living amongst us. Perhaps why JC Brown a mysterious death on the very day he was to lead an exploration team to find the lost civilisation of Lemuria is because he was just not suppose to discover it let alone unveil it for the world.

I can visualise the many ancient beings that appeared when Rinpoche did the Dorje Shugden puja there…. all coming to pay homage. Beautiful, hope one day I’ll be able to visit this power place, indeed it is magnificent! Thank you for this post.

I know of Mount Shasta as the 7th/8th or root chakra of earth. In human terms, it resides at the base of the spine.

The other chakra which I know of is Mount Kailash which is described as the crown chakra of earth.

In energy flow terms, the above two meet, although they resides at the opposite end of each other on planet mother earth.

  17. Sofi on Sep 1, 2016 at 9:46 pm

Thank you Pastor David for this interesting article on the legends of Mount Shasta. It is amazing that the legends goes so far back to the Lemurians and Atlanteans. I think most people have heard of Atlantis and it’s people whom people usually depict as semi aquatic with special powers. This is the first that I have heard of the Lemurians. It is interesting how both races were so advanced to have the technologies that we are now only developing. Won’t it be great to discover the cave that Mr. JC Brown had found? Would be such an adventure to find and prove if the legend did indeed exist. Come to think of it, the Lemurians and Atlanteans sounds kinda like the mystical country of Shambala where the people too are special.

Mount Shasta sounds so mystical with stories like Guy Warren Ballard and his family being the ‘sole Accredited Messengers’ of the Ascended Master St Germain and Nola Van Valer meeting a man dressed in a long robe and later Phylos the Tibetan who gave her teachings and explanations. Both Guy and Nola formed their own schools, The Ascended Master Teachings and The Radiant School of Seekers and Servers, respectively. Wonder if it would be a good place for retreats with its strong energies and maybe opening portals to be discovered. One thing is for certain, the blue lake a top Mount Mazama and the cloud formations are so stunning.

  18. Fong on Sep 1, 2016 at 5:10 pm

Thank you, Pastor David for a very interesting account of Mount Shasta. This really seems like a place full of mystery and legends and folklores. The ventricular clouds really attracts more questions.

But, I’m sure if one were to go there, one would probably feel the energy. I do believe that there are places on earth where they are energy vortex. Humans won’t be able to answer all the questions that are out there regarding these places of energy.

Answers or no, it is a very interesting read and really pique my interest.

    • Pastor David Lai on Sep 30, 2016 at 9:16 pm

      Say Fong,
I think you meant ‘lenticular’ clouds…Lol! They hide alien spaceships or perhaps, Lemurian or Atlantean spaceships. Whatever it is, it does not look like they are arbitrary formations of nature.

Momo is a dumpling made of all-purpose flour and filled with either meat or vegetables. Inspired by Tibetan dumplings, the dish is a very popular Nepali street food. It is one of my favourite foods. Last year while in Kathmandu I am fortunate given the opportunity to learn and made vegetarian Momos.
Thank you Rinpoche for this sharing as it reminds me of trip there visiting some of the Holiest sites and trying my hand making momos then.

Bouddha, also known as Boudhanath, is a stupa in Kathmandu, Nepal which is located about 11 km from outskirts of Kathmandu. Its massive mandala makes it one of the largest spherical stupas in Nepal and the world. The Boudhanath Stupa pyramid is coated with over 60 pounds of gold, is one of the largest and one of the most significant Buddhist monuments in the world. This great Stupa is home to precious relics and this semi-circular structure stands out with its majestic mandala, recognized by UNESCO in 1979 as a World Heritage Site. The Boudhanath is the most sacred sites in Tibetan Buddhism outside of Tibet, reflecting the cosmological tenets of Buddhism. Was there last year June joining thousands of pilgrims circumambulate the stupa.
The aerial view of this Boudhanath Stupa is magnificent indeed. Looking merely at the pictures is a blessing.

Shanti Stupa in Pokhara was built by Nipponzan-Myōhōji monk Morioka Sonin with local supporters under the guidance of Nichidatsu Fujii, a Buddhist monk and the founder of Nipponzan-Myōhōji
A famous site where locals as well as foreign tourists will go there throughout the year. One have to climb 400 steep steps to get to the Pagoda, it was worth the climb, as its situated on the Anadu Hill at the height of 1100 meters.
Shanti Stupa shrine was built as a symbol of peace designed to provide a focus for people of all races and creeds, and to help unite them in their search for world peace. It has also become a tourist attraction as it provides a panoramic view of the Annapurna range, Pokhara city and Fewa Lake. The white pagoda has two tiers for tourists and religious visitors to circumambulate. Its location on the hilltop provides a splendid view of sunrise and sunset for visitors. Hopefully I could visit this amazing Holy site soon.
Thank you Rinpoche for this great sharing

Its an old blog yet its hold many wonderful memories for The Tsem Ladrang team , I am sure. They are the ones who found a beautiful house in the hills of Naranthan in Kathmandu, Nepal. The place is serene and peaceful with beautiful mountains ranges. Looking at the old pictures its breath-taking and brilliant. The Ladrang is surrounded by scenery of outstanding natural beauty. Having a spacious yard, guest quarters, butterlamp house, to mention a few. The Ladrang has a spectacular views of the surrounding mountains and Kathmandu Valley.

Buddhist Pilgrimage in Nepal is the best trip that takes us to the spiritual centers where Buddhism’s practices and meditations emerged. Nepal is popular for its Buddhism practices and itself is the birthplace of the originator Gautam Buddha. This beautiful Himalayan nation hosts the amazing Buddhist trails, monuments and stupas. It’s the place where the Buddha meditated and the Buddha enlightened the people with wisdom. Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal, boasts many caves, stupas, and monasteries that are associated with Bodhisattvas, Buddha and Siddhas. The cave of Naropa and his guru Tilopa is beside Pashupatinath temple, bank of the holy Bagmati River. All these caves is considered as the holy site and Buddhist pilgrimage sites as the caves is the place where Naropa received training, teachings and had visions of Vajrayogini.
I am fortunate to have visited this Holy caves while at Kathmandu last year.

The Lord Buddha was born in 623 BC in the sacred area of Lumbini, southern Nepal.Lumbini is one of the world’s most important spiritual sites for the Buddhist pilgrims from around the world. The site is a popular place of Buddhist pilgrimage for many yearly. It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1997. The tranquility, aura and peace that we would experience in Lumbini makes it among the most holy places to visit in the world. I am fortunate going to this holiest place of Buddha birthplace last year with my Dharma brothers and sisters .It is the place where, according to Buddhist tradition, worth visiting

Very interesting and informative article. In most cultures, women is consider as lower in status compared with men. Ancient times in India, man took the lead while women is seconded. But times has changed for the better where women are not degraded in society. They receive equal recognition, appreciation, and stature, yet in countries and places around the world, women are still viewed as inferior and treated accordingly. But in Buddhism women have been increasing in number and has proven that many of them have gained full enlightenment in a female body. In Buddhism is concerned there’s no discrimination toward women ,both men and women are equal. There‘s many female Mahasiddhas and Yoginis as in this blog. May it inspired many more to come. Interesting article and its great sharing knowledge.

Sleep paralysis is a feeling of being conscious but unable to move. It occurs when a person passes between stages of wakefulness and sleep. During these transitions, one may be unable to move or speak for a few seconds up to a few minutes. Some people may also feel pressure or a sense of choking. Sleep paralysis is a temporary inability to move or speak. It’s not harmful and should pass quickly, but at times can be frightening. It can affect anyone but is most common in young adults and they might have hallucination. The scary facts about sleep paralysis is those who suffer from it have said it felt like someone was choking them on their chest so they could not breathe.
As for me I have not experience as such before as least i know now what i can to do.
Thank you Vinnie Tan for sharing. Interesting read of these stories related to sleep paralysis.

nteresting as this texts been composed after being inspired to do so . That’s interesting as this nature are traditionally considered exceptionally potent in their blessings if the claim of divine inspiration is authentic. According to the account in the introduction, the author composed this text after being divinely inspired to do so. It’s a very rare kind and its acceptance been recognised and received praise by very high lamas of our tradition. Reading this article tell us all of how powerful Dorje Shugden when we invoke in our prayers.

That’s wonderful Rinpoche has composed prayers in English so as everyone could recite and practice. For beginners is such a meaningful insights and perspectives without commitments and initiation. Moreover each prayers is for a specific blessing that helps practitioners to gain attainments and overcome obstacles. Easy and simple for everyone to start off.
We are fortunate that everything Rinpoche did brought tremendous benefit to all sentient beings. Whatever prayers Rinpoche has composed are especially potent with blessings.

A great article , revisit this again of Tibetan Lamas and their dogs. As now I have a pet doggie with me, I came to understand more of them . Dogs are the most amazing creatures, they give us unconditional love. For me, they are the role model for being alive. Buddhists believe dogs also have the potential to become enlightened and can teach us about responsibility, love, and other Buddhist principles. The Q & A by Sandra Klein’s interview with the Venerable Gonsar Rinpoche gave us a better understanding and very informative of Tibetan dogs under Lamas care. ccording to the Buddha Dharma, all sentient beings have Buddha nature — from ants to humans. Though we often look at dogs as wonderful companions an teach us to embrace Buddhist principles. They, themselves, embody many of these principles.
Thank you Rinpoche for this great sharing.

Living with my wife, whose world is meticulously painted with the hues of OCD, is a journey that intertwines the essence of love with the complexities of the human mind. Her relentless pursuit of cleanliness and order, transforming even the most negligible corner into a testament of organization, often dances on the fine line between admiration and frustration. The sight of her steering clear from trash bins as if they were labyrinths of chaos, serves as a poignant reminder of the battles she fights within. Yet, it’s through these very battles that I’ve learned the profound language of patience and the unspoken strength of support. Therapy, in its gentle embrace, has been a beacon of light for her, guiding her through the stormy seas of OCD. It has not only offered her solace but has also unveiled the strength of her spirit, teaching us both the beauty of resilience. As she journeys through the pathways of healing, I stand by her, a testament to the power of love and the enduring promise of hope. Together, we navigate the complexities of her world, discovering that within the challenges lie opportunities for growth, understanding, and an unbreakable bond. https://www.mindfullyaliveonline.com/obsessive-compulsive-disorder-ocd/

Venerable Ajahn Chah was a Thai Buddhist teacher of the Buddhadhamma and a founder of two major monasteries in the Thai Forest Tradition. Well respected and loved as a man of great wisdom, he was also instrumental in establishing Theravada Buddhism in the West. Interesting life story, how he chose to leave the settled monastic life and became a wandering ascetic. Walking across Thailand, lived in forests, caves and cremation grounds while learning from the meditation monks of the Forest of various monasteries. He wandered through the countryside in quest of quiet and secluded places for developing meditation. He even lived in tiger and cobra infested jungles, using reflections on death to penetrate to the true meaning of life. After years of wandering, Venerable Ajahn Chah established a monastery where he taught simple, practice-based form of meditation, and attracted a numerous of students including western foreigners. He was one of the greatest Dhamma teachers of the modern era. His wise teachings have continued to guide thousands of people along the path of Dharma. Venerable Ajahn Chah’s teachings of the Thai Forest Tradition gradually spread across all over the world. Several of Ajahn Chah’s Western students have since established monasteries throughout the world. Just in Thailand itself, there are more than 300 branch monasteries in Ajahn Chah’s tradition. Ven erable Ajahn Chah used his ill health as a teaching point, emphasizing that it was a living example of the impermanence of all things and reminded people to endeavour to find a true refuge within themselves. The legacy of Venerable Ajahn Chah’s teachings and legacy continues into the modern age.

Wonderful blog written on the practice of Kalarupa for us to understand better. As an emanation of Manjushri, Kalarupa’s practice helps us to destroy ignorance and to develop wisdom overcoming our anger and suffering . Awesome Kalarupa manifested in multiple forms to help sentient beings who personifies enlightenment by the conquest of anger. Kalarupa also regard as one of the three main Dharma protectors of the Gelugpa is extremely fierce and ugly, and tames all kinds of spiritual ugliness. The fierceness of his iconography teaches us to remind ourselves that all the causes and effects of anger arising from ignorance are dreadful and distorted.

Nepal is a very spiritual country, having a huge Dorje Shugden mural in Kathmandu, is indeed a big achievement for Kechara. Located on Charkhal Road in Dilli Bazaar, the mural can be found midway between our two Dorje Shugden chapels which are in Putalisadak and Chabahil. It is also very close to one of Kathmandu’s largest shopping malls. Many locals , tourist will be able to connect them to a powerful deity that is so closely associated with their culture. Well the mural not only beautiful but also full of symbolism and everyone merely by seeing it is blessed. Thanks to those talented artists and generous sponsors making it a success.

The Unknown

The Known and unknown are both feared,
Known is being comfortable and stagnant,
The unknown may be growth and opportunities,
One shall never know if one fears the unknown more than the known.
Who says the unknown would be worse than the known?
But then again, the unknown is sometimes worse than the known. In the end nothing is known unless we endeavour,
So go pursue all the way with the unknown,
because all unknown with familiarity becomes the known.

What the meat industry figured out is that you don't need healthy animals to make a profit.
Sick animals are more profitable... farms calculate how close to death they can keep animals without killing them. That's the business model. How quickly they can be made to grow, how tightly they can be packed, how much or how little can they eat, how sick they can get without dying... We live in a world in which it's conventional to treat an animal like a block of wood. ~ Jonathan Safran Foer

Our Penang group members are so proud of her and her commitment in attending the weekly puja. Despite being eloquence and smart, she has beautiful chant as well. When she leads, make sure you are there to hear her chant for yourself! Kechara Penang Study Group by Jacinta.

A sea of yellow ~usually in Tibetan Buddhism yellow represents growth. We prayed that our Penang group will grow in terms of people, wealth and attainments too. _/\_ Kechara Penang Study Group by Jacinta.

After Dorje Shugden puja @3pm, we had Rinpoche's Swift Return puja too. We laughed as Sis Swee Bee was commenting that Tang should smile ~ here's the reason why we laughed. Kechara Penang Study Group by Jacinta Goh

Dharma sharing by Hue before we proceeded with DS puja & Rinpoche Swift Return puja. Hue is one of the long time Kechara Penang members and he comes to puja regularly. He shared that he truly believes that Dorje Shugden and Rinpoche always there guiding him. He shared how sometimes DS will give him hints to avert troubles ahead or to alert him when he 'misbehaved'. Hope many will come to know more about this powerful Dharma Protector, Dorje Shugden aka DS. Having Dorje Shugden is like having a powerful ally that will protect us day and night. Just trust Him and have faith. Kechara Penang Study Group, 25/11/2023 by Jacinta.
