How Authentic is the Tibetan Leadership’s Claim of Democracy?

There is a famous aphorism by the great American President, Abraham Lincoln who once said,

“You can fool all the people some of the time, and some of the people all the time, but you cannot fool all the people all the time.”

Currently, no one is finding this saying more applicable than the Central Tibetan Administration or CTA who are the Dalai Lama’s ‘government’ in exile based in Dharamsala, North India.

It is coming to 60 years since the Dalai Lama escaped Tibet and in that time, the CTA has managed a very successful propaganda campaign. Thanks to clever marketing, they have carved a narrative of themselves as a benign and “Shangri-La-type” democracy fighting the oppression of a communist regime. In this way, they have managed to convince many people and governments that they are deserving of world support.

While China might be Communist and possess their own list of faults, what is of interest here is not the merits or demerits of any country’s system of government. It is actually an examination of the CTA who has been a harsh critic of China but as time goes by, has shown that they are no better than the regime they condemn. This is not the observation of people who are politically opposed to the CTA, but an examination by neutral media who have taken note of the CTA’s antics, or have observed discrepancies in the words and actions of the CTA and have taken the initiative to investigate. In fact, there is an increasing sentiment that the CTA has taken the world for a ride for six decades and the Modern Diplomacy article below alludes to it being the same old feudalistic government, albeit with a new coat of paint and some labels by which it proceeds to regard itself as a democratic government.

I wonder if it is clear to the CTA that its persecution of Dorje Shugden people is drawing more and more attention internationally, because it is diametrically opposed to the CTA’s labelling of themselves as a democracy. Questions are being raised and this time it does not look like the Tibetan leadership can simply chuckle and charm their way out of a quagmire. Their charm offensive certainly does not appear to have worked on renowned Swiss investigator Dr Andrea Galli, who published in Modern Diplomacy a response to Tibetan Prime Minister Lobsang Sangay’s Emory University lecture on ‘The Tibetan People’s Transition to Secular Democracy’ which, based on Dr Galli’s article, now seems to be hollow.

For instance, the CTA’s own website still publishes material that encourages discrimination against Dorje Shugden followers, including official resolutions passed by its so-called democratic parliament that criminalise people purely based on their religion. No democratic government in the world would do this and even if they have previously done so, it goes without saying that they will have repealed it, in keeping with modern day expectations. And yet, incredibly even as the CTA shouts its claim to be a fair and democratic government on its website, the same site evinces its oppressive character that denies its own people their human rights. Whatever Lobsang Sangay tells the audience at Emory University that impresses them at first, ultimately the CTA’s official website will attest to the opposite and people will naturally come to the conclusion that he is being misleading. All this has a very negative impact on the CTA and the struggle of the Tibetans in exile.

The CTA must quickly realise that it is not existing in a vacuum and its audience is no longer confined to Tibetan refugees but also includes international academics, global watchdogs and the world at large. If they wish to claim themselves to be democratic, the CTA must expect the scrutiny of other democracies who will hold them to the same standards. This is happening at a time when information is easily accessible — it is not difficult for the global public to learn the truth, and it is these people who shape policies and opinions around the world.

Is it too late for the CTA to reverse this trend? These days, the Internet is abundant with news reporting the loss of the CTA’s standing with an increasingly long list of world leaders, and this has resulted in a loss of traction for the Tibetan cause. His Holiness the Dalai Lama clearly recognises this and so of late, we see His Holiness making positive overtures towards China by recognising the China-backed 11th Panchen Lama Gyaltsen Norbu as the “official Panchen Lama”. Even more recently, we see His Holiness saying that it is naive to regard China as an enemy and the Tibetan people should not be divided over political, religious or regional issues. If the Dalai Lama’s words are to be believed, then surely the CTA must cease all its discriminatory policies against Dorje Shugden people. The Dorje Shugden controversy is today one of the most toxic and damaging issues that the Tibetan leadership started over 20 years ago and even today it continues to divide not only the Tibetan diaspora but also Tibetan Buddhists around the world. If the CTA hopes to continue to receive world support, it has no choice now but to start operating as a real democracy and not punish people based on their faith.

With all this in mind, I am glad to see this article in Modern Diplomacy which shines light on the suffering of the Tibetan people under extremely contradictory CTA policies. It is my hope that the Tibetan leadership will take note of what global media are saying, realise they are no longer seen in a flattering light, and start to behave like the democracy the Tibetan people deserve after decades of hardship and dashed hopes.

Addendum

Central Tibetan Administration’s Website

Below is a screenshot of Tibet.net, which is the Tibetan leadership’s website. In it, they have a section with “information” about Dorje Shugden which is designed to promote hatred, negativity and direct vulgarities towards Shugden practitioners. What kind of democratic leadership has a section like this on their site targeting a religious group? Imagine the uproar there would be if the American or Canadian, or any other democratic government had sections like this on their site for the public!

His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s Website

This is a screenshot of DalaiLama.com which is the official website of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. When this section exists on His Holiness’ website, it actually emboldens Tibetans to discriminate against and segregate Shugden practitioners. This section is basically the Dalai Lama’s ‘endorsement’ of such behaviour; when anti-Shugden individuals see this, they think it is okay to segregate against the practice “because the Dalai Lama said so”. I don’t think the Dalai Lama would agree with this but the webmaster and shadow writers behind his website should not put this type of anti-Dorje Shugden section which subscribes to discrimination against a group because of religion. In the 21st century, this is not fitting of a great spiritual leader like His Holiness the Dalai Lama. Do not discriminate tolerate; is the way to go.

If the Dorje Shugden ban is just advice and not a ban, then why is a section like this necessary on any website?

Tibetan Parliament-in-Exile’s Resolution Stating Government Employees Should Not Rely on Dorje Shugden

In 1996, the Tibetan leadership passed a resolution stating that all departments (and ergo their employees) should not rely on Dorje Shugden (point 8). The resolution also stated that individuals who do engage in its worship will harm the Dalai Lama’s life and the so-called Tibetan cause. That being the case, how will anyone within the Tibetan settlements and government be able to openly engage in Dorje Shugden practice after that, if their worship has been widely labelled as anti-Dalai Lama, anti-CTA and treasonous? To openly practice after that will leave them open to criticism, vulgarities, harassment and discrimination, as Dorje Shugden practitioners have been for the last 20 years. So they will be left with three options: to give up the practice (which many will not do), to practice secretly, or to give up their jobs.

Tibetan Parliament-in-Exile’s Resolution Naming Dorje Shugden Practitioners as Criminals in History

This is a screenshot of tibet.net, the Central Tibetan Administration’s official website, which shows the Tibetan Parliament-in-Exile’s unanimous resolution dated 17 March 2014 naming Dorje Shugden practitioners as criminals in history (point 3, paragraph 2).

The Tibetan Parliament-in-Exile passed a resolution on 17 March 2014 naming all Dorje Shugden practitioners as criminals in history.

The Tibetan Parliament-in-Exile passed a resolution on 17 March 2014 naming all Dorje Shugden practitioners as “criminals in history”. On what basis can the Tibetan leadership condemn all Dorje Shugden believers, including the elderly, infirm, young, and those not of Tibetan nationality, as criminals?

VIDEO: Dalai Lama bans Dorje Shugden practice
and expels monks

His Holiness the Dalai Lama was recorded in Drepung Monastery in 2008 clearly stating that those who refused to give up their Dorje Shugden practice should be expelled from the monasteries. His Holiness even said that if people found it difficult to fulfill this instruction, that they should say that the Dalai Lama told them to expel Dorje Shugden practitioners.

My question is this: if giving up Dorje Shugden practice is just advice, and it is up to us who we wish to rely on, then why are there such heavy repercussions for people who choose to keep the practice? As a result of His Holiness saying this, thousands of Shugden monks were expelled from the monasteries, and were forced to set up their own monasteries where they would be able to continue their Dorje Shugden practice.

VIDEO: Gaden Monastery Attacked

Since the inception of the Dorje Shugden ban 20 years ago, the CTA (Central Tibetan Administration) continues to organize a hateful campaign against Dorje Shugden practitioners. In doing so, the Tibetan leadership has gone against the very core teachings of His Holiness the Dalai Lama on compassion and tolerance and thereby, misled the world over the nature of their activities. The Tibetan leadership pursues huge sponsorship and financial aid from the West in order to run its operations but they actually channel these funds towards campaigns that suppresses religious freedom within the Tibetan communities through various means to instigate violent suppression against Dorje Shugden practitioners.

This video footage shows clearly how Dorje Shugden practitioners have lived their lives in fear for the last 20 years due to the ban on Dorje Shugden. Although the Tibetan leadership and supporters have continued to use various violent and underhanded means to segregate and discriminate Dorje Shugden practitioners, the practitioners themselves have not fought back. Instead, they continue to uphold their peaceful reliance on their Dorje Shugden lineage lamas and especially the practices and teachings they have received in relations to the protector deity. The main part of the video was filmed in 2000 and it shows 3,000 lay and ordained Tibetans heading towards Gaden Shartse Monastery in South India in order to riot against a group of Dorje Shugden practitioners.

France 24 is a reputable news network based in France, known for their objective reporting style. They covered the Dorje Shugden issue extensively, surely a reflection of the seriousness of the issue for them to devote so much airtime to it. In their video, France 24 captured on film the discrimination against a Dorje Shugden monk.

VIDEO: Al Jazeera reports on the Dorje Shugden issue

Based in the Middle East, Al Jazeera was formed in response to the heavy influence of Western culture on the media. They are known to cover controversial topics that other news agencies may be reluctant to cover, and provide hard-hitting, objective coverage of current affairs.

Evidence of the Ban

Over the years, my students have collected evidence of the ban against Dorje Shugden. Personally, I find it quite disappointing and sad that they have been able to collect so much evidence because it just goes to show how widespread and pervasive this ban has become. As you can see below, notices banning Dorje Shugden practitioners can be found just about anywhere in the Tibetan settlements. Whether a Dorje Shugden person is trying to access healthcare or enter a restaurant, or try to buy something from a shop, they are banned everywhere and refused service. How is this just ‘advice’ when the repercussions of practising Dorje Shugden are so violent inside the Tibetan communities and settlements?

For the first time available, Dorje Shugden and his entourage of 32 asssistants of his mandala.

Dorje Shugden is a powerful protector deity who is also an emanation of Manjushri, a wisdom bestowing Buddha. Therefore, he has great ability to help us to progress further on the spiritual path. He does this by helping us to overcome obstacles and problems for the modern individual.

Due to his enlightened nature, Dorje Shugden is able to manifest 32 deities and within the same abode resides Setrap and Kache Marpo:-

    1. 5 Dorje Shugden families or emanations. They consists of the following:-

    – Dulzin Dorje Shugden, which performs activities to eliminate inner and outer obstacles.
    – Shize, which performs activities to pacify all illnesses and disease.
    – Gyenze, which performs activities to increase all desirable material and spiritual wealth.
    – Wangze, which performs activities to control difficult people and circumstances.
    – Trakze, which performs activities to wrathfully eliminate all insurmountable obstacles and life-threatening situations.

    2. 9 Mothers. They represent protection of the five senses and developing control of the four elements. These are all attributes that signify their ability to assist tantric practitioners with their higher meditations.

    3. 8 Guiding Monks. They represent the Eight Great Bodhisattvas (Avalokitesvara, Manjushri, Vajrapani, Samantabhadra, Maitreya, Kshitigarbha, Akashagarbha, Sarva-nivarana-viskambini) and they bring about the growth of the Dharma, through the Sangha, Dharma practitioners and Dharma establishments.

    4. 10 Youthful & Wrathful Attendants. They represent the ten wrathful attendants to avert inner and outer obstacles. They are beings who are from Mongolia, China, Kashmir, India, Bengali, etc.

    5. Setrap. He is a senior Dharma Protector from India and an emanation of Amitabha Buddha. He had enthroned Dorje Shugden as an authentic Dharma Protector. Therefore, he also resides within the same mandala of Dorje Shugden.

    6. Kache Marpo. He is not an emanation of Dorje Shugden but he is still an enlightened Dharma Protector in his own right. He was originally known as Tsiu Marpo of Samye Monastery. However, he has placed himself under the service of Dorje Shugden as his chief minister, performing many activities in order to protect and benefit practitioners. Therefore, he stands guard at the main entrance of Dorje Shugden’s mandala. He often takes trance of qualified mediums to speak.

    7. Namkar Barzin. He is the reincarnation of an old Mongolian monk and when he passed away in Phari area of Tibet, his spirit was placed as a powerful assistant of Dorje Shugden. He guards and protects buildings and great institutions especially those that benefit others. He rides on a mythical Gyaling animal that resembles a goat but with scales.

These sacred images are available on *Vajrasecrets. They are made of high quality alloy and are one of a kind. They are based on the lineage of His Holiness Panchen Rinpoche’s monastery, Tashilhunpo in Shigatse, Tibet. In fact, the iconography of these statues are based on detailed photographs taken by H. E. Tsem Rinpoche during a trip to Tashilhunpo’s protector chapel. These are based exactly as the 10th Panchen Lama’s personal collection.

His Holiness the 10th Panchen Lama

Tibetans commonly refer to His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama and His Holiness 10th Panchen Lama as the “sun and moon” of Tibetan Buddhism. They are the center of Tibetan Buddhist civilization, which draws to its sphere of influence millions of non-Tibetan practitioners. The Panchen Lama’s incarnation line began with the 16th abbot of Tashi Lhunpo Monastery, Lobsang Chokyi Gyeltsen (1570 – 1662). He was bestowed the title of Panchen Lama by His Holiness the 5th Dalai Lama after being declared as an emanation of Amitabha.

After being given the title, his three previous incarnations were posthumously also bestowed the title, making Lobsang Chokyi Gyeltsen the 4th Panchen Lama. He became a teacher to many Tibetans, Bhutanese and Mongolian religious figures, including His Holiness the 4th and 5th Dalai Lamas, and the 1st Jetsun Dampa of Mongolia. A prolific author, Chokyi Gyeltsen is credited with over a hundred compositions, including a number of commentaries and ritual texts that remain central in the Gelukpa tradition today. Along with his role as a teacher of the Dharma, the Panchen Lamas are usually responsible for the recognition of the rebirths of the Dalai Lamas, and vice versa.

The 10th Panchen Lama, Lobsang Trinley Lhundrub Chokyi Gyeltsen (19 February 1938 – 28 January 1989) continued both the spiritual and political roles of his predecessors. His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, his contemporary, was even heard to say and echo the Panchen Lama’s own words that the Dalai Lama would safeguard Tibet from the outside while the Panchen Lama would safeguard Tibet from the inside, as he never left Tibet after the political troubles of 1959. He was truly loved by the Tibetans, all the way until his passing. When he taught, thousands of people would attend, not only from his own Gelug lineage, but masters and practitioners from all traditions of Tibetan Buddhism.

At his sprawling monastery of Tashi Lhunpo, he has a special chapel specifically dedicated to Dorje Shugden, where prayers and rituals are performed on a daily basis. In his great omniscience the Panchen Lama held Dorje Shugden as the principal Dharma protector of the monastery. He also personally propitiated Dorje Shugden among other Dharma protectors, and even wrote extensive prayers and rituals to Dorje Shugden. These rituals and prayers are contained within his ‘sung bum’ or collected works, which are provided here. As such a great lama, with an erudite and clear understanding of the Buddhist scriptures, a teacher to millions in both Tibet and China, from an established incarnation line and an emanation of the Buddha Amitabha, he could not be mistaken about his practice of Dorje Shugden.

His Holiness 10th Panchen Lama is known for his composition of commentaries and practice texts that are still in use by contemporary Buddhist practitioners both in Tibet and across the world. One of these is a powerful ritual composition propitiating the compassionate Dorje Shugden.

Upon the request by Acharya Lobsang Jangchub to compose a shorter version of the prayer (sadhana) for the exhortation of activities of Dorje Shugden, Panchen Lama immediately composed an abbreviate form of Dorje Shugden’s Kangsol. This text is entitled “Manjunatha’s (Tsongkapa) Lineage protector Dorje Shugden and five forms wrathful propitiations and confessional prayers and fulfilment of activities rites” or “Melodious sound of Accomplishment of the Four Activities” for short. Once the prayers were completed, he had signs and strong feelings that Dorje Shugden has been working hard to protect the Buddhadharma in general and the lineage of Lama Tsongkhapa specifically.

Mirroring the abilities of one of his earlier incarnations, Khedrub Je, a disciple of Lama Tsongkhapa and master of both sutra and tantra, the Panchen Lama used his compositional skill and poetic prowess to create a masterful sadhana. Worthy of note is a praise in which the first letter of each verse is a Tibetan vowel. Such compositions are rarely seen, and have historically only been used when propitiating senior Dharma protectors such as Palden Lhamo and Kalarupa.

The Panchen Lama also stated that while composing the Dorje Shugden sadhana (prayers) he was filled with a sense of happiness and bliss. He ends the composition with not only his official title but his ordination name, Tenzin Trinley Jigme Choje Wangchuk, endorsing the validity of his work. He composed the sadhana in his own Tashi Lhunpo monastery while in the Hall of Clear Light and Bliss.

    Dear Kecharians and friends,

Last night, I gave a teaching to a group of people who were in Kechara Forest Retreat. I shared with them the correct way to pray for our loved ones and why we shouldn’t “demand” Dorje Shugden with fulfilling our wishes but let Dorje Shugden decide what is the best outcome. He has infinite Manjushri wisdom beyond our own and we should trust this wisdom. Sometimes what we pray for is not what should be fulfilled. Sometimes what we don’t want turns out to be the better result in the future.

I also shared with them about a beautiful monk, Tsawa Pulthok Rinpoche, who was jailed and badly tortured by the soldiers for 19 years, starting back in 1959 in Lhasa, and yet he has no anger towards his torturers. He was released and had resettled in Nepal where I met him. For the remainder of his life, he spent his time in meditation, retreats and pujas for the public until he passed. He was glowing, happy and very proud of the fact he was a student of His Holiness Kyabje Pabongka Rinpoche, which he told me when we met. He did full meditations on Vajra Yogini and short puja to Dorje Shugden daily in his small room in Kathmandu, Nepal where I had to honor to join in his prayers. He told me he was very happy to have his room to do his meditations, pujas and prayers openly. Whatever happened to him, he accepted as part of his karma and he spent much time in prison meditating and quietly teaching dharma to his other cellmates. He was very much respected in prison in Lhasa because he never showed anger, always meditated and consoled others, giving them great strength. He endured much hardship, torture and beatings but he never lost his monk vows. His full understanding of karma helped him not feel any anger or bitterness towards the soldiers. He told me that daily, he would meditate that the karma of others in prison would come to him. That all the torture and abuse he received was so others in prison did not have to suffer this. He said suffering for others was what kept him going and made him be able to endure the pain.

We are not bound by our experiences. We are bound by our choice. I also reminded those were present about the good person inside each and every one of us, and how we should not “bury” this good person with our excuses because the more excuses we give, the deeper this good person is buried and soon the layers of excuses will make it very difficult for us to find this good person. We are all beautiful good people and we should not let it get lost by lying, laziness, lack of integrity and procrastination. We all have a choice. If we have to make excuses, we should choose to make excuses to be a winner. When we win, we make ourselves happy and those around us happy.

The teaching session went well and it was spontaneous, and I requested the people who live and work in and around Kechara Forest Retreat for the talk. We had some good laughs to during the talk.

    Thank you,
    Tsem Rinpoche

‘If we trust in karma which exists, then there is no reason for anger’.

“If the Dalai Lama, if His Holiness the Dalai Lama can be harmed by Dorje Shugden, then we might as well not practice Buddhism anymore. If His Holiness the Dalai Lama can have his life shortened by a so-called evil spirit, any evil spirit, then can he be Avalokiteshvara? So on one hand you say, we say, I say, everybody says, he is Avalokiteshvara; on the other hand you’re saying that he can be harmed by an evil spirit… Which one is it? Can he be harmed by an evil spirit or is he Avalokiteshvara? Do you think Avalokiteshvara, Manjushri, Vajrapani, Tara all take refuge in something else to protect themselves from Dorje Shugden? How illogical is that? How illogical of people to say His Holiness the Dalai Lama can be harmed by an evil spirit, any evil spirit or “Dorje Shugden” evil spirit. How is that possible?” – Tsem Tulku Rinpoche

Listening to the chanting of sacred words, melodies, mantras, sutras and prayers has a very powerful healing effect on our outer and inner environments. It clears the chakras, spiritual toxins, the paths where our ‘chi’ travels within our bodies for health as well as for clearing the mind. It is soothing and relaxing but at the same time invigorates us with positive energy. The sacred sounds invite positive beings to inhabit our environment, expels negative beings and brings the sound of growth to the land, animals, water and plants. Sacred chants bless all living beings on our land as well as inanimate objects. Do download and play while in traffic to relax, when you are about to sleep, during meditation, during stress or just anytime. Great to play for animals and children. Share with friends the blessing of a full Dorje Shugden puja performed at Kechara Forest Retreat by our puja department for the benefit of others. Tsem Rinpoche

It is exactly, the non democratic nature of the CTA, that there are so much problems created within Tibetan community in exile.

Tibetans in exile are facing all manner of issues, Dorje Shugden being one of it, that is dividing Tibetan society. In light of so much disharmony amongst Tibetans, it is not surprising that the CTA has not made much progress in their negotiations with China. Without harmony amongst all Tibetans, the hope to gain back their country remains an unfulfilled dream.

How can a nun curse someone they do not even know and wish the person to die quickly and be born in hell? What kind of nun is this? Shocking! What more she’s cursing a Buddhist teacher and a monk?! Is this the face of Bhutanese Buddhist?

This is so shameful for her as a nun, her teacher, her monastery, her country and her King. A sangha should not behave in such a manner. A Sangha should carry enlightened Buddha’s teachings of compassion and wisdom to benefit all sentient beings.

A Sangha is not supposed to promote hatred and certainly should not be cursing or wishing another person to die. That wish itself is already breaking one of the vows.
A Sangha is one of the 3 Jewels, an object of refuge. They should not behave like an uncivilized person with so much hate. This is how bad the Tibetan Leadership has spread their lies and hate about Dorje Shugden and Shugden Buddhist practitioners.

The CTA is a far cry from the word Democracy. If the CTA were a democracy then so was Hitler’s regime. What the CTA has done, other than make a mockery of what democracy means, is mislead the world. The truth is : about 4 million people around the world who are Dorje Shugden practitioners suffer from CTA’s fake democracy. Sadly, how the CTA is does not do much good for the reputation of HHDL. Tell me which democratic government has a website that clearly and blatantly discriminates and singles our one specific group of people? Where is the compassion CTA? I appreciate this article from Martin and also the one written by Dr. Galli. Thank you to you both.

For so many years, the CTA hasn’t showed anything good from their movements. Only playing their 2 faced goody goody and trying to bully poor innocent people by breaking their guru samaya from practicing Dorje Shugden, etc, etc. And also making Dorje Shugden a scapegoat evil spirit. This is very very bad. I’m getting tired of their nonsense and hopefully the DS ban would be lifted ASAP to relief all the sufferings for DS practitioners. Thank you very much, Martin for this insightful write up. Thank you very Rinpoche and Martin for keeping things rolling on the blog. You guys are wonderful!👍🙏😍😘👏

For the last 60 years the Tibetan leadership ( CTA ) has been exploiting their own people in all Tibetan settlements. There is no religious freedom or true democracy within Tibetan people at all. The Tibetan leadership ( CTA) were given land, opportunities, education, aid, and so many donations helping them. Yet they have spent millions on campaigns, websites, pamphlets and books against Dorje Shugden, instead of putting these donations towards their people. Misused of funds for their own agenda. Its sad to read all the evidence collected for the past years has showed that the ban against Dorje Shugden has cause sufferings , disharmony , discrimination among the Tibetans communities. Those practitioners were denied all sorts of services like in getting a job, to get medical treatment in hospitals , hotel services and so forth. Every where there are posters saying that they are not allowed to do this and that. The practitioners are restricted and do not have much freedom at all. Sad…..all these years what the CTA have done…. nothing. They have forgotten the core teachings of H. H Dalai Lama on compassion and tolerance. Recently HH Dalai Lama openly has recognised the China-backed 11th Panchen Lama Gyaltsen Norbu and on the way to terms with China. The CTA got to realised this and to unite all Tibetans as one. Be more democratic to end the sufferings and disharmony among the Tibetans. For most to lift the Dorje Shugden’s ban as everyone should be given religious freedom, human rights, and so forth.
Thank you Martin Chow for this details write up.

The Charter of the Tibetans-in-Exile is the supreme law governing the functions of the Central Tibetan Administration, CTA. The Charter forms a policy of non-violence, free democracy, equality, respect for human rights, and the promotion of moral values while ensuring the material welfare of the Tibetan people. This is the democracy CTA promised to be.

In fact, the democracy that the CTA claims does not fit the most vital characteristics of a democratic system of government. The Tibetans in exile do not have equal political rights and economic and social benefits in the exile community. The Tibetans in exile cannot practice their religion freely too. Although Tibetan Constitution in which Article 10 guarantees the Freedom of Religion, yet the CTA imposed Dorje Shugden ban because the Dalai Lama said so. Furthermore, in 2014 the CTA passed an official resolution to criminalize the Dorje Shugden practice. What kind of democratic system is this where the charter can be easily overridden by someone, causing segregation, and putting their citizens in so much fear and pain?

Dr. Galli’s extensive and unbiased researches have given much in-depth and supportive fact to open up people’s eyes. The CTA is nothing but a mimic of democracy. People shouldn’t be fooled again by the romanticized Tibet as a celestial paradise where Tibetans lived in a spiritual non-violent culture, uncorrupted by the lust or greed. In fact, the Tibetan society was under a system of feudal serfdom before 1959. Therefore, don’t be surprised with the CTA’s attitudes in governance today because it is a reflection of its feudal theocratic roots.

The CTA should realize that they have to behave like a democratic government before they are losing even more supports from both western and their own Tibetans in exile. The CTA could have removed both its official website and the Dalai Lama’s official website that special dedicated to the persecution of Dorje Shugden practitioners. By doing this is to honor the freedom of religion in the Tibetan Constitution, the Constitution of India, as well as other United Nations Human Rights provisions. Lift the Dorje Shugden ban, end the sufferings because people deserve their rights, peace and harmony.

Thank you for the insightful write-up, Martin!

The world needs to know about the Tibetan leadership’s (CTA) very own brand of democracy which includes discriminating its owns citizens right to practice Dorje Shugden and supporting discrimination against Shugden devotees.

CTA, for the last 60 years, has been highly critical of China and often lashes out at China for oppressing and bullying Tibetans in Tibet. But what CTA is doing to Shugdenpas is no different. Under the guise of enforcing the ban, CTA is actually bullying and abusing their own people who chose to honour their commitment to Lamas and Dorje Shugden.

If one were to read the last section of Martin’s post, there is clear evidence of how CTA has enforced the undemocratic ban to the point of denying medical treatments to sick Shugdenpas. Which country in the world denies its own people medical care based on religious believes?

Given CTA’s lacklustre track record in securing their homeland, it would be wise for them to give true democracy a shot and stop antagonising China. No country in the world would support oppression of religious freedom. CTA is accusing China of taking away Tibetans’ human rights but what is CTA doing to Shugdenpas?

Interesting biography of Gendun Drub who was identified as an emanation of bodhisattva of compassion. He was born the son of a nomadic farmers and there’s a legend about his birth where a large black raven protect him from intruders, crows and wild vultures. The black raven an emanation of Mahakala was told . He lived the life of a shepherd until the age of seven showing early inclination for a religious life. He was sent to the monastery and studied under many great famous scholars and was a student of the Je Tsongkhapa . He was posthumously given the title of First Dalai lama. He remained the abbot of Tashilhunpo Monastery until his death.
Thank you Rinpoche for this sharing.

Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this short biography of Pakpa Lodro Gyeltsen. Amazing… Pakpa Lodro Gyeltsen has a very good memory as he can mastered eight volumes of works that he taught and has given oral texts commentary. He would recite the mantras of Avalokitesvara and Manjushri thousands of times each day. He did serve as a teacher to numerous abbots of Gelug monasteries in Lhasa too. Inspiring post of a great master.

Thank you Tsem Rinpoche for sharing such a beautiful Buddha image and prayer. There are many stories about practitioners who have very strong faith in what they practice and ultimately, they gain attainments from that single practice. The nun was very kind to write this prayer and give us the opportunity to practice so we can be benefited from it as well. Her result proved that prayer and mantra are powerful, but we must have faith.

While we are still alive, we should be preparing for our death. Accumulate good karmas and merits which we can bring with us to our next life. Good food, good car, big house, nice handbags are things we enjoy now but cannot bring with us when we die.

How often do we do something virtuous? When we are free, we like to go shopping, meeting up with friends, eating, drinking, doing sports or traveling. All these activities don’t bring us long-term benefits, the benefits we enjoy after we are dead.

For Malaysians, due to Tsem Rinpoche’s kindness, we are very fortunate to have a holy and beautiful Kechara Forest Retreat (KFR) in Bentong to let us accumulate merit and purify our negative Karma. These people gathered in KFR to do something virtuous together, how wonderful!

Thank you Rinpoche for sharing the info and benefit of the above plants. My office used to have plants but no enough as suggested by the article. With this knowledge I hope more will get at least some small plants to put on the working table. We need fresh air and more greens in the office to keep the environment fresh.

Padampa Sangye was an Indian yogi and spiritual master from southern India. He was well known for bringing Indian Buddhist teachings to China and Tibet and has travelling extensively his whole life throughout in India, Tibet, and China. He is counted as a lineage guru by all schools of Tibetan Buddhism , well known teacher and many prominent figures came to receive teachings from him. Wow …he was at Wutaisan too meditating ,teaching and in retreat until his death. He is well remembered for his support of women practitioners. That’s great.
Thank you Rinpoche for this sharing of a great master.

Interesting article …..Professor Reginald Ray shares about the importance and impact rituals mainly for westerners or non believer or non Buddhist. For many Westerners , they tend to view unseen beings as superstition . I do believe of that unseen beings do exist. They are always around us and we should keep in mind that as long as we do not disturb them , respect them they will do no harm in return. Ritual is a way of communicating with beings who really are out there . In Tibetan Buddhism, ritual is used in relation both to the seen and the unseen worlds. Buddhism is a path of mind transformation., meditation, visualization and so forth.
Professor Reginald Ray explained a very deep insight of Tibet Buddhism , the traditional Tibetans and Western cultures.
Well I have still lot more to learn from this post and I will read again to understand better.
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this sums up the core concepts of Tibetan Buddhism.

Malaysia is a multi-racial, multi-religion and multi-cultural country. However, everyone here lives in harmony and respects each other’s differences. All of us celebrate the festivals together.
There are many festivals of different cultures being celebrated in Malaysia. For examples, the Indian festival Thaipusam, Chinese New Year, Muslim Hari Raya, to name a few.

The more we are developed and advanced, the more we are exposed to harmful elements. For examples, the radiation from the technology devices, dust, carbon monoxide, chemicals found in the household products, etc. Fortunately, there are ways to get rid of these harmful elements naturally without using chemicals. Plants like English Ivy, Bamboo Palm, Ficus and many more are good to purify our living environment. Some of then can be put indoor, some are planted outdoor. These plants are ideal to green up our environment and at the same time serve as a purifier.

This is a great news! New Zealand has officially made it illegal to use animals in research and testing, people who are involved in animal cruelty cases will be prosecuted. This new law is passed on the basis that animals can experience positive and negative emotions too. Even though animals can’t talk but they can feel the pain, they have fear in them too.

    Praise to Avalokitesvara (Chenrezig)

This is the famous praise to Avalokitesvara (Chenrezig) written by the realised Nun Palmo who attained Buddhahood and cured herself of leprosy through her austere practices based on Avalokitesvara and Nyung Nay (fasting retreat). This prayer is filled with great blessings. Below that is the long dharani (mantra) of Avalokitesvara which is good to do. Basically there are four things that happens for a person who practises this mantra constantly:

    1. At time of death, one will behold Buddhas
    2. One will not take rebirth into three lower realms
    3. Accidental death or premature death
    4. After death, will be reborn in Amitabha’s pureland

    Begin:

    NAMO MAN-JU-SHRI-YE NAMO SU-SHRI-YE NAMO UT-TA-MA SHRI-YE SOHA

OM JIG TEN GON PO LA CHAG TSAL LO
I bow to the Protector of the world.

JIG TEN LA MA SRID PA SUM GYI TO PA PO
Everyone in the three world praises and celebrate the Lama.

LHA YI TSO WO DUD DANG TSHANG PAY TOD PA PO
Even the gods and Brahma celebrate and praise Lord Chenrezig

THUB PAY GYAL CHOG TOD PAY DRUB PAR DZAD PA PO
One who wishes to attain buddhahood praises the lord who delivers such accomplisment.

JIG TEN SUM GYI GON PO CHOG LA CHAG TSAL LO
I bow to the supreme protector of the three world.

DE SHEG PAG ME KU TE KU ZANG DZIN PA PO
Holder of a noble form body, filled with infinite tathagathas,

DE SHEG NANG WA THA YE U GYAN DZIN PA PO
You are crowned by Buddha Amitabha.

CHAG YE CHOG JIN YI DOG TRE KOM SEL WA PO
    Your supremely bountiful right hand dispels the suffering of pretas;

CHAG YON SER GYI PAD MAY NAM PAR GYAN PA PO
Your left hand hold a golden lotus.

DRI ZHIM RAL PAY THRENG WA MAR SER KHYUG PA PO
Your sweetly scented red and yellow hair sparkles like necklaces.

ZHAL RAY GYE PA DA WA TA BUR DZE PA PO
The expanse of your face is lovely as full moon.

CHEN GYI PAD MA CHOG TU ZANG ZHING YANG PA PO
Like the sublimely supreme lotus, your eyes are beautifully wide.

KHA WA DUNG TAR NAM KAR DRI NGAD DAN PA PO
Your sweet-smelling form is like a snow-white conch shell.

DRI MED OD CHAG MU TIG TSHOM BU DZIN PA PO
You hold a mala of stainless, glowing pearls,

DZE PAY OD ZER KYA RENG MAR PO GYAN PA PO
And radiate stunning beams of light, red as dawn.

PAD MAY TSHO TAR CHAG NI NGAR WA JE PA PO
Your body is like a lake; from it, hands, like lotuses are perfectly arranged.

TON KAY TRIN GYI DOG DANG DEN ZHING ZHON PA PO
They are youthful and like autumn clouds, white and bright and clear.

RIN CHEN MANG PO PUNG PA NYI NI GYAN PA PO
Both shoulders are adorned with many precious jewels.

LO MAY CHOG TAR CHAG THIL ZHON ZHING JAM PA PO
Your youthful palms are soft like the most supreme leaves.

RI DOG PAG PAY NU MA YON PA KAB PA PO
Your left breast is covered with a tenasera skin.

NYEN CHA DU BU GEG CHING GYAN NAM CHANG WA PO
Precious earrings and other ornaments gracefully adorn you.

DRI MA MED PAY PAD MAY CHOG LA NAY PA PO
You dwell up on a supreme and unblemished lotus.

TE WAY NGO NI PAD MAY DAB TAR JAM PA PO
Your navel’s surface is as soft as lotus petal.

SER GYI KA RAG CHOG LA NOR BU TRE PA PO
Your belt is of the finest jewel-encrusted gold.

TA ZUR TRI PAY RE ZANG SHAM THAB DZIN PA PO
Your lower robe wraps your hips in the noblest cloth.

THUB PAY KHYEN CHOG TSHO CHEN PHA ROL CHIN PA PO
Gone to the other shore of the great ocean, you have supreme knowledge and capability.

You, who properly gathered so much virtue, received the supreme state of being.

Dispeller of the misery of old age and illness, you are the permanent source of joy.

SUM THAR DZAD CHING KHA CHOD CHOD PA TON PA PO
You act to liberate beings from the three lower realms, and show and perform equally for space dwellers.

LU CHEN CHOG TE DUD PUNG THRUG LAY GYAL WA PO
Supreme among beings, you are victorious in battle over hosts of demons.

SER GYI KANG DUB DRA YI ZHAB YID ONG WA PO
    Your feet tinkle with the pleasing sound of golden anklets;

TSHANG PAY NAY PA ZHI YI WEN PAR DZAD PA PO
And you create the four silences, which are the cause of Brahmahood.

NGANG PAY DRO DRA LANG CHEN DREG TAR SHEG PA PO
You walk with the grace of a swan and the dignity of an elephant.

TSHOG KUN NYE WAR SAG SHING TEN PA NYER WA PO
Provider of the doctrine, who has completely and properly accumulated,

O MAY TSHO DANG CHU YI TSHO LAY DROL WA PO
You liberate from the ocean of milk and the ocean of water.

GANG ZHIG TAG TU THO RANG LANG NAY GU PA YI
Whoever will rise with respect at dawn,

CHEN RE ZIG KYI WANG PO YID LA SEM JED CHING
Thinking in their mind of powerful Chenrezig,

TOD PAY CHOG DI DAG CHING SAL WAR TOD JED NA
To purely and clearly extol this supreme praise,

DE NI KYE PA AM NI BUD MED YIN KYANG RUNG
Whatever they are male or female,

In this life and all future lives,

JIG TEN JIG TEN LAY DE GO PA KUN DRUB SHOG
In this world and the world beyond, all their purposes will be accomplished.

In Tibetan Buddhism, Dharma protector practice is very common in different lineages. A very unique thing in Tibetan Buddhism is the oracle tradition. An oracle is able to take trance of a Dharma protector and give advice to us. If you don’t have the opportunity to meet the oracle, you can go to Kechara Forest Retreat to pay homage to the world’s first Dorje Shugden oracle statue.

The Unknown

The Known and unknown are both feared,
Known is being comfortable and stagnant,
The unknown may be growth and opportunities,
One shall never know if one fears the unknown more than the known.
Who says the unknown would be worse than the known?
But then again, the unknown is sometimes worse than the known. In the end nothing is known unless we endeavour,
So go pursue all the way with the unknown,
because all unknown with familiarity becomes the known.

Wrathful Dakini Ucchusma-In the form of wrathful dakini, Ucchusma has 3 eyes; with both hands holding a vase with nectar at her heart level, her hair loose, and no ornaments. Wrathful Dakini Ucchusma-In the form of wrathful dakini, Ucchusma has 3 eyes; with both hands holding a vase with nectar at her heart level, her hair loose, and no ornaments. The oracle of Dorje Shugden in Dungkar Monastery in Tibet. Very old vintage photo from 1923 by an English Earl Lord Ronaldshay in his book, \"Land Of The Thunderbolt Sikkim, Chunbi & Bhutan\". This Lord met up with Dorje Shugden via the oracle. He devotes a chapter in his book about this oracle and encounter.

Stunning photo of offerings on my shrine photographed by Victor Choi. The lighting is beautiful. Offerings of food, fruits, drinks, flowers and incense are made on my shrine daily. For me the shrine is a portal to the Enlightened Beings and connecting to their blessings. Blessings to accomplish positive things in my life for others and myself. We do need this connection very much in our unpredictable lives where can experience so much anxiety, pain and a feeling of senselessness. We should never lose our connection to the Enlightened Beings and be firm about it. We will eventually need them no matter how \'good\' things seem now. Today this photograph taken is beautiful and I wanted to share it.

May everyone who visit my page here be blessed, your obstacles cleared, be healthy and have a long life.~Tsem Rinpoche

We have to discipline ourselves in order that our mind can allow the Buddha Dharma to take root. When it takes root, our lives will change for the better. What we perceive in the world around us is dependent on the attitude within us. Never give up improving on ourselves because that is the true road to peace and happiness. We are worth it. Others are worth seeing us in our best.~ Tsem Rinpoche

I am in love with only you my Adamantine Lady of Coral hue. I am in love of liberation, freedom and wisdom I seek in you. Even to whisper your name Vajra Yogini excites me to the core of my soul. I have been away for so long and I wonder when I can join my supreme mother in Akanishta. My love for you has no end and it only grows. My mind is focused on you daily and my heart only awaits for you to place sindura on my crown soon. Nothing I have seen or experienced in this deceitful world can remotely compare with you my dear wisdom lady. Please with supreme sound of damarus, cymbals, incense and voices of sunyata, embrace me to ascend amidst rainbow lights effortlessly to my home. My true home where you will bring me. Bring me home soon. In my heart only lies you. In your heart I know I am existent also. We are one.~ Tsem Rinpoche

What the meat industry figured out is that you don't need healthy animals to make a profit.
Sick animals are more profitable... farms calculate how close to death they can keep animals without killing them. That's the business model. How quickly they can be made to grow, how tightly they can be packed, how much or how little can they eat, how sick they can get without dying... We live in a world in which it's conventional to treat an animal like a block of wood. ~ Jonathan Safran Foer

We have many outdoor sacred images of various Buddhas. The ones that were visited were Tsongkapa, Nageshvaraja, Loma Gyoma, Tara, Nagarakshasa and then back to Tsongkapa. At each location circumambulations and lamp offerings were done. We walked the vast land while chanting Migtseyma mantras. The very elderly followed to each location in cars.
