How to Harness Power at Work

How to Climb the Corporate Ladder

by Josh Goh, assistant director of corporate services, The GMP Group

While being well-qualified may give you a foot in the door, it may not necessarily guarantee that cushy job at the top. You need a smart plan and not just petty schemes.

Have a career plan. Job promotions don’t come on a silver platter, and you can’t rely on luck or others to push you up the corporate ladder. You need to have a short, mid- and long-term action plan. Step out of your comfort zone – accepting challenging assignments is often your best bet to shine. Find that hunger and grab any opportunity that comes your way. After all, you are the master of your own destiny.

Make your boss look good. A good general is not without a strong army of soldiers – offer your boss the best support by being the best employee you can be. Do not attempt to overthrow the general. When your boss gets promoted. chances are he will need his best employee at his side.

Network. Building and maintaining good work relationships are important, so is strategically associating yourself with the right individuals

Dress like a leader. If you want to be a leader, dress like one – take your cue from a senior executive or your manager. Well-dressed individuals are taken more seriously than scruffy ones.

How to Gain Respect at the Workplace

Three words: Deliver, deliver, deliver. While it is true that you don’t have to be the nice guy, it doesn’t mean you have to be the office asshole either. You can be a shit manager. but if you deliver on-time and surpass expectations, no one will have anything to say about that. Especially if you work in a team where one deadline is dependent on another, there has to be trust that everyone does their part and -here’s that word again – delivers.

And while fear may be a good deterrent for everyone to generally avoid you, it doesn’t exactly go hand-in-hand with reverence.

If you’re supervising a team, don’t micro-manage. It just shows you don’t trust them to do their job and not only will that feed resentment, why in the world did you hire them in the first place? Never talk down (though some egos may find that challenging), and give credit when it’s due. Don’t toot your own horn, because if you’re that good at your job, everyone else will be honking for you. It goes without saying that respect is earned, and yes, that applies to every echelon. So, never demand it, or worse, take it for granted.

Nothing worth comes easy. Life goes on very fast. The secrets of success are hard work, luck and constancy of purpose. There are always new skills to learn and strategies for us to adopt, and we should never stop learning. There is never any short cuts to success, but hard work complimented with the desire to achieve, determination, and always being motivated. Be willing and eager to take on responsibility even when it is not a part of our job description. What we learn and with our skills and knowledge can help us make a greater impact on the organization. We should make it a point to participate in all activities, not only a great opportunity to network and meet other people in the organization. This goes to any organization we are working for where also helps us gain new skills and knowledge. Always be willing to learn new things.
Thank you Rinpoche for this sharing

A very short and precise article and all points are very valid. We have to have a plan to success. Nothing will come if we just talk and did not put in action. We just need to work hard on the objective and keep delivering. When we do that not only our boss but our colleagues will also notice. Respect is gain from being truthful and honest with our work.
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this article.

Having a goal is always a good start but it will remain just being a goal unless we take steps to achieve that goal. Whether we like it or not ass-kissing is the name of the game in office politics or any politics until you can get to the top.

Being proud and sticking to one’s pride is good when it comes to delivering results but not a trait you want to have when dealing with your boss or network of people you will need to support career advancement. That is why it is not always the brainy intellectually smart people who gets to the top of the game but it is the street smart ones that knows how to play office politics.

Having said that, you cannot be successful long term just by being fake, you do need to be able to deliver. One can only hide from not being able to produce results for so long. Eventually results speak the kind truth that people cannot take away from you. All the other superficial image and ass-kissing acts if it does not bring the results, it will crumble eventually.

Knowing how to balance all these traits is the key. Not be the extreme of one trait and not to insist on some high morale ground with other traits. The person who knows how to strike the balance is likely to succeed.

  4. Pastor Moh Mei on Jan 19, 2016 at 4:25 pm

Without results, one can only talk for so long. We can talk, we can boast, we can spin all kinds of stories but by the end of the day, people are going to look at the results.

There are many ways one can get a position in a company or an organization. Getting to a high positions do take effort and some hard work but that is only half the journey. To get respect is much harder. No matter your position, if you manipulated your way, if you have no integrity, you will eventually lose people’s respect and from there it is only a matter of time. Position of power can be gained through hard work, through integrity and through fair play.

The Secret to success is having a positive mind. Thinking success and not failure, saying i can instead of I can’t makes a huge difference on an individual’s success. Every success starts from a dream or a goal. Having a good plan to achieve our goals will leads us to success eventually. Never stop learning and always accept jobs happily even though it is not your job as every time we do it it only makes us better. Good attitude also leads us to success. Be focus, persistent and consistent as success is like a marathon as success does not come over night. Most successful people out there have many failures before they become successful, with a positive attitude success will come eventually. Be responsible with Integrity, honesty and be dependable.

We make our boss look good because our boss’s success ensure our success too. Because helping your boss will make his job easier and put you in their good book. It makes your boss remember you and it provides job security for you. When you boss gets promoted he will definitely want you to be promoted. You will be the first priority to ensure you continue working with him or her.

To gain respect is to give respect. Being helpful, resourceful, polite. Getting things done, picking up the slack and not complaining about your boss or co-workers is essential. Demonstrating leadership and always being humble and be a student of everyone will go well with fellow staff. With the above qualities fellow staff will respect you.

Thank you Rinpoche for your sharing. After working for 8 years in the same company and facing with many unexpected problems, it makes me to realize that failures will not make me died. I like failures because they make me to feel humble and the least among all. The failures always unfold my blindness and help me a lot to contribute to people around in my company.

What is the secret to success?
The secret to success is have a career plan, network & dress like a leader.
The reason why you must have a career plan is because everyone wants to succeed, everyone wants a bigger pay increase/promotion/allowance and etc. So you must have a plan, how you can progress in a company. Taking on challenges and more in a company is a good way to stand out. Why, cause it everyone is doing 3 things and you do 5 things well and with results, your boss will notice. Once he/she notices, then you will have a higher chances of a good appraisal. Which boss does not want a good worker?

Network is important cause you never know who you are going to meet. And with a good network of friends, they can do wonders. Why do most of our male bosses play golf, that is because good network are done in the golf courses.

Why make your boss look good?
Of course we have to make our boss look good. Our bread and butter depend on him or her. If he/she looks good, they will be happy and then we will get our promotions/good appraisal/ more opportunities & etc. Of course, it is not making that person look good only by kiss “assing” him/her but with results for your boss.

Also we show not be too smarty pants with our bosses as well. Cause, everyone in the world is insecure and if your boss sense that you are trying to out smart him/her, then it is BTTSF (Back to the SHIT FARM ) for you. If he/her, can promote you, he/her can also DEMOTE you or even worst put u in the cold storage. They can even write nasty letters to your future employers about you.

How to gain respect with your fellow staff?
Produce results surpass everyone, care about people around you. Give credit when it is right to your fellow colleague. Everyone wants to be recognised for their ideas/work & etc. And by doing that, they will do more and they will respect you. Do not micro manage, whenever you get a project…sit and plan. You have to trust others but monitor them skillfully.

Respect is important cause from respect, they are able to take instruction from you. If there is no respect, they would not care and they can even intentionally screw things up for you.

    Dear Rinpoche,
Thank you for this very informative article. The secret to success is to have action plans and to set goals. It is also important to accept challenging assignments and push ourselves out of our comfort zone. Besides, we should also have an open mind and be flexible in all kind of situations. We should make our boss look good because he is leading the whole team towards progress. If the team succeed, every one succeed too. When our boss look good, it shows he have the ability to lead and to groom future/potential candidate to succeed him when he gets promoted to a higher position. We earn our respect from fellow staff by keeping promises made and to deliver on time so as not to hinder others from doing their work effectively. We should also not be frugal with our credits to our staff when it is due and to always look for and emphasize their good sides.

  10. ruby khong on Dec 7, 2011 at 10:47 pm

Thank you for posting this Rinpoche! Looks like formula for success goes across board; from corporate to family to dharma work. One has to have clear goals, hard work, punctuality in delivering assignments, dressing and carrying oneself professionally. And finally the yearning to want to succeed at all cost but with integrity.

Success is in the palms of one’s hands, literally! Success and being at the top of ladder is one thing, but earning respect is another. One MUST walk the talk to gain respect. As an aspiring leader myself, i think it is important to get ‘one’s hands dirty’ and be in the field with your men! I do not believe in remote control management but hands on approach.

It is with no doubt that making one’s boss look good is important. He represents the organisation and everyone else below him. It is team work for any organisation to succeed.

  11. Matt on Dec 7, 2011 at 1:41 pm

In work, it is important to be successful, yet to be successful we must love what we are doing. It becomes very hard to achieve well in something that we do not enjoy. However, with everything in life we don’t love everything and we are constantly being forced to things we don’t want to do. This is present everyday in any work environment anyone is in. Thus the only way to be good at something we do not enjoy doing, is to convince ourselves that we do intact love what we are doing. We must change our mind frame to enjoy ourselves.

Once we do that, all other benefits will come with it. We will feel that we get along better with our peers, we will start to enjoy working, and most importantly we will succeed in what we do. Yes we can set targets, we can make plans, but we most likely will not carry out the plans effectively if we do not love what we do. Once we find that we do love what we do, our bosses will become more pleased with us. It won’t be a burden when they give us more work that we don’t want to do. It is true that barely anyone gets along with their boss, but to succeed you must connect with your boss. In return he will give you what you want.

Respect is key. To be respected; you must respect. Otherwise others will only fear you in some cases, or not respect you at all. Therefore, we must respect our bosses, and in turn he will respect you. Together your relationship will be better, and you will much more successful. Be a leader show fellow staff, how it is done. But do so humbly, don’t try to show off, otherwise people will not respect you. Bring others up, and don’t belittle them. To be a good leader you must not only lead, but create future leaders.

These tips for success has been something that Rinpoche has taught and stressed about from time to time. Whether we are working for ourselves or others, the same rule applies to achieve great results. The key is to develop all the RIGHT attitude. By having good foresight to see and plan ahead, loyalty to our leaders, harmony, integrity, humility and hardwork will eventually get us somewhere. Being good at what we do can only bring us to a certain level.

The micro-managing part is something new I learn from this article which I agree with. Each individual should take charge of their own responsibilities, not having to be reminded and watched over. Causing inconvenience to all parties. Our work attitude should also be applied to all areas in our daily life.

  13. justin cheah on Dec 7, 2011 at 1:18 am

    Dear Rinpoche,

Hope everything is fine and well with Rinpoche.

After reading the article above, i felt that this is actually short and simple but yet precise for people in the modern world not only to their work but also daily lives.

Motivation, supportive, harmony with the people around, present ourselves better. All these qualities makes us being able to blend into a society/workplace without creating any harm for others and it brings success.

Bosses that delivers and set an example to many will generate more respect from our subordinates or colleagues. While many would also make a huge success by trusting their subordinates and able to deploy them to task that they are good at.

    Thank you,
    justin cheah

Thanks for this article Rinpoche. It spells out very clearly the secret to success in corporate world.

After working for more than 15 years in multi-national corporations, I totally agree that the secret to success would need a clear goal and also a right attitude. The right attitude here refer to the willingness to take ownership of each task or project and not to give up when face with challenges.

We need to make our boss looks good for sure. When our boss in good position, we too will be in better position. If small bosses do not get promoted, we will not have chance to climb the corporate ladder!

With regards to ‘respect’ just like Rinpoche said, we need to ‘deliver’. People will respect us when we deliver what we promised. Yes, respect is to be earned. It is also very important that we show respect to other people first.

  15. kb thapa on Dec 7, 2011 at 1:11 am

Dear Rinpoche Thank you for the article.

We can get everything we want in life if we are responsible and determined and as long as we produce RESULT enough of what they want. If we give nothing of value, We get nothing of value. Our method of exchange determines success.

    Thank you, KB

  16. Joy on Dec 6, 2011 at 11:55 pm

Thank you Rinpoche for this interesting sharing, not just for the corporate world but it can be applied any where. This article shows clearly how interdependent we all are and no man is an island.

The key to success is to have a clear goal/vision first. That would be the driving force that we act upon. From there you need to map out your short, mid- and long-term action plan in achieving your goal. We should also step out of our comfort zone and accept challenging assignments as these are opportunities for us to shine, grow and improve.

Making our bosses look good is an important key element because when the boss succeeds, he/she will obviously take his best employee/team with him/her to achieve further. So it is wise to offer the best support for our boss to achieve his/her goals. Your success is based on how well your boss does.

In the article it advices to cultivate good relationships with the right people who can possibly help you achieve your goals. But in general it is wise to cultivate good relationship with anyone as you will never know who could lend you a helping hand as everything is inter dependant. To be successful, you need to walk the talk and look the part and believe in yourself, your goals/visions and even if you failed 100 times, to always bounce back and keep trying till you succeed. Never stop trying.

Respect is definitely earned and not something that can be bought over night. To best way to gain respect from your staff or team mates is to deliver what you promised. To have integrity and do what you say always. This not only gain you respect but trust. Trust is also something you give to others, your team mates/staff. Don’t micro-manage as it only shows you do not trust they will do their part so why bother having them. Never talk down to your team mates, appreciate them, give credit where it’s due and never take them for granted as you depend on them to get the job done.

  17. Li Kheng on Dec 6, 2011 at 11:40 pm

Dear Rinpoche, thanks for the post. It is ironically awesome that we can find tips to climb the corporate ladder in a spirituality blog. This shows that spirituality is all encompassing and not limited to the confined definitions we have labeled it with!

Every tip shared in the post is spot-on accurate.

Jobs and job opportunities do not comes on a silver platter! Many people in today’s day and age expect to become “manager” with a good salary without even a day of work experience. They did not reflect that planning and diligent execution of the plan is necessary for professional progress in the corporate world. Additionally, many individuals perceive a lot of jobs likes waiting on tables, cleaning etc. to be “below them”. However, successful individuals like Steve Jobs and Bill Gates worked form the bottom and challenged themselves beyond their imagination to become the commercial world’s icon.

It is important to make the boss look good because it is a reflection of who you are as well. The ways you support your boss makes you a good member of the team, a highly demanded asset to the company and develop your habit to support others (inside and outside the work space). Also, it is not a good idea to bite the hands that feed you  So, what if your boss turns out to be a horrible person? Dharma teaches us that the horrible people are those who teache us the most valuable lessons in life, they are our supreme teacher. For example, we will be able to learn from these bad bosses what NOT to do in the future when we become a boss. I learnt to be very conscious of being a good boss to my team from one of the “worst” bosses I know of.

Respectful relationships are vital for your career to flourish. Building relationship with sincere and honest partners by taking the first steps to be sincere and honest yourself forms the foundation for your professional journey. These relationships will be long term when nurtured with care and, proven by the test of time, comes in most handy in your time of need. Network is a two-way relationship of giving and receiving. So, it is a good idea to call on business friends just to say hi and ask after their well bring…not only when you need something.

Keeping your promises by delivering your result on time is the OBVIOUS secret ingredient to a successful career and life. The ability to deliver as promised build up self confidence and the trust from others. This will in turn develop a confident and trustworthy individual, which is a rare gem in today’s fast paced, shortcut modern culture.
Result is the best feedback we can have and rely on to inform us if we are moving in the right direction. Many times, what we refer to as “bad” results is the most powerful form of feedback because it gives us the opportunity to improve and grow professionally and personally. So delivery of results and the courage to face our results will develop a self-reliant “system” that gives input for continuous improvement.

  19. Justin Ripley on Dec 6, 2011 at 5:09 pm

The secret to success as mentioned in this short but eloquent post really is simple “DELIVER, DELIVER, DELIVER” but is struggled with time and again, when one obstacle comes up and another, and another it usually gets too much and we as individuals give up. When in a group situation then the “giving up” becomes a root problem. People depend on each other in a group environment and when one falls it spirals into a chain reaction, or delays caused by picking up where the shortfall is.

To be successful we must “deliver”, then none of the problems above become issues. How to cultivate the “deliver” attitude, never give up, or if really cannot, learn what not to do so it doesn’t get in the way of “delivering”.

In any situation, Dharma / Corporate, by making the Boss look good

    a) others will want to join, help to relieve the load .
    b) we make our Boss mission achievable and our Boss can do even more, we can do more… doing more equates to getting more benefits.

If we wish to gain the respect of fellow staff then we need to practice all the above with them, not just in making the boss look good. It’s quite true having worked in many jobs, there are people you may not like, or they make you sick to the bone, but they are still there and maybe even senior. Why are they considered assets to the company? Because they get the results, simple, and are respected for the results they can achieve. We have a choice to be respected for results, but also how we achieve those results.

  20. wan wai meng on Dec 6, 2011 at 4:51 pm

Never ever giving up and just keep doing it. There is always much more factors to derail us than those that support us. Our bosses are put there for a purpose and if we want them to carry on leading we must support them. Also when our bosses succeed they will also want to bring us along with them. We need to gain their support by doing our part well, support them even though their ideas do not make sense. Sometimes we can’t see the path until we make that first step. Make a calculated risk whats the worst can happen when we support a fellow colleague.

This is so true even back in the days when I was still in the rat race. Some advice is timeless and this is one of them. Some might think that it only applies to the corporate world but that’s not true. It applies everywhere. At work, at home, with family, with friends, with volunteerism etc. Dont think that just because you are doing someone a favor, it is ok to be late, or to not deliver. Integrity, honor and keeping your word are virtues that are applicable anywhere in life. I find this short article very inspiring. Thank you Rinpcohe

  22. Shin Tan on Dec 6, 2011 at 3:46 pm

These are very true and many times we tend to forget that these simple guidelines helps to ensure a successful career and work relationship with others.

I remember a few of my friends were of the opinions that nowadays real successful people do’t need to dress up in this day and age, it’s more about the charisma and leadership. I agree to a certain degree, but still, their executives all still need to dress well.

Good reminders for those working at corporate and also for us working for a Dharma organisation so that we project professionalism.

    Dear Rinpoche,

1, The secret to sucess is to understand one strengh and to know and acknowledge one weakness and make a change to correct them.

    2. Whatever we do reflect on the image of the Boss.

    3. Respect has to be earned and not demand. We have to show the example to respect others if we want them to respect us. We have to be kind and understanding. When we find they make a mistake do not pin point at it but instead tell them in private and give them a chance to correct themself.

  24. Girlie on Dec 6, 2011 at 2:49 pm

Success does not come for us if we do not work on it. Planning our goals and executing them on a timely manner is important. Teamwork is necessary. I must make my boss look good because he is the representative of the corporation and we must all give him our support to help him achieve the corporation’s goals. To gain respect, we must give respect.

  25. Uncle Eddie on Dec 6, 2011 at 2:27 pm

Firstly, learn to be Leader, take initiative at work and always be approachable. Enhance your skills and maintain a positive attitude always. This will help in motivating and inspire people you work with. By helping others, you create the cause for you to be an asset within the organisation. Expand your knowledge and skills – knowing more is always an advantage, especially in all critical and crucial areas of work within your organisation. Knowing all the ins and outs of procedures and resources qualifies you for the respective work/position for the future in the organisation. Most importantly, workplace politics should be ignored, which commonly exist in all organisations. To move forward, ignore all negativity and focus on succeeding. Abandon thinking of short-cuts or alternative ways to the top. Best is to concentrate on how to improve performances to deliver good results on time. Be mindful and always support your Boss’s vision/goal. Be loyal and stay committed to your organisation, and think of working hard and smart to deliver the results of what is expected. Maintain professionalism and always treat others with respect, and in return, you will be well respected and soon be moving up the corporate ladder of success.

    Dear Rinpoche,
The secret to success is to never stop learning, work hard,,always be positive & hv clear mind to plan for long term, always develop a plan to reach the target.
We must make our boss look good because our boss reflect to us so as we are reflection of our boss.if our boss look good it means that our boss is getting support from us which also means that we have good team work .that is why if our boss look good, so do us ~
If we want to gain respect from our staff,we need to be humble, reasonable to them all the time.if we can stand behind our staff when they make mistake, surely they will respect us as a good leader and they will also support the boss when anything happen to the boss .

  27. Sean Wang on Dec 6, 2011 at 1:41 pm

I think that the secret to success is to treat work as play. Enjoy your work and you will be successful. It is essential to make your boss look good as he represents you and your company. If he does not look good, people would not think that the company will be worth investing in . To gain respect from your fellow staff is to do your work well and help them with their work. Taking initiative is also a key factor in getting respect from your colleagues.

Of course, I am just a child and I do not know much of the business world. So, this is how I think of it currently.

  28. Ethan Chu on Dec 6, 2011 at 1:26 pm

I totally agree. Most important i think in striving for a career, one must have visions, realistic ones, short term and long term. What do you see yourself in 3 month’s time or 3 years, 10 years later! then of coz it whatever its mentioned above. be sure of what you want to achieve and yes, you dont have to be a bitch! I think a lot exercising power and slowly they became a bitch! but i still think the key is your employee.. so how can you be a bitch when your employee is your best asset?

Why make my boss look good? Because we work for the boss. Imagine if we don’t work well with our boss and don’t respect him, and we complain our work all the time. how would that reputation work for the organization? Not only people will get insecure about the organization, it will also reflect badly on our attitude towards work.

To gain respect of our fellow staff. Firstly you must respect them. Understand where they are good at and where they are lack of then slowly work with them. The key word to me is work with and around them and understand. It is difficult when people work in different kinds of way and some only insist on one way. Information and learning cycle is constant, we learn from the young, the young learn from the old. It is all about improvement and consistency. If you are working with a group, knowing your team is very important to achieve results.

    Dear Rinpoche,

Thank you for sharing the article above.

To me everyone ideal of success is different. To climb the ladder of success one needs to have the goal, plan how to get to the goal and then execute. Most important one must have the drive/passion to succeed no matter how difficult it takes and no giving up as well as the willingness to move out of the comfort zone to achieve ones goal and not afraid of failing because is a part of success.

When we help our bosses to look good it reflects us. Because the bosses can’t do every thing by him/her self without help. So when the bosses get the credit basically people that work for him/her gets the credit too. Both sides are in the win win situation and of cuz not missing out the success of the corporation’s name.

Walk the talk. Sometimes we face with the unwillingness of people not wanting to do work, we should do more so that it inspire them have the willingness to do in the future. Since none of us is perfect we should have patients to help, teach and guide other to succeed.

  33. Lim Han Nee on Dec 6, 2011 at 11:15 am

Dear Rinpoche, thank you for posting this inspirational advice from Josh Goh.

The secret of success, be it in a corporate or spiritual organisation, is to have a clear vision or big picture of our end goal. With that vision to drive us towards our goal, we then work out a mid-term and long-term plan. With a vision to inspire us, we will naturally propel ourselves forward and take on challenging assignments, pushing ourselves beyond our comfort zones.

We must always identify with our boss’s vision of success and support him all the way. Being mindful that as a team-member, we are a cog in the wheel. Our boss’s and the team’s success depends very much on our delivering our assignments on time and on delivering our best, striving always to be better and better and to surpass expectations. Then when our boss’s vision of success manifests and he moves up the corporate ladder or the ladder of the organization, he will take along with him his supportive team players, who have thus made him ‘feel good'(by looking after his image), all the way.

Respect has to be earned. The surefire way of gaining respect is to deliver our work on time and to give better than expected work.Being a team player, we recognize that we need to do our share to the best of our ability and to work in harmony with other members. We have to be considerate and be aware of the need of others, needs such as being appreciated and not being put down and negatively criticized. If we are a team supervisor, we should not micro-manage as it sends negative vibes to team members that we don’t trust them. We will lose their support and cooperation and respect just like that.

    1) the secret to success is deliver on time and dont miss any oppurnity,

    2) i make my boss look good because he can perform his job easier so he can concentrate on the grow of company and i will get benifit when the company grow.

    3) the way to gain respect with my fellow staff is always give the credit to other and perform my duty.

  35. Hui Keng on Dec 6, 2011 at 10:19 am

It is extremely challenging in corporate climb to the top of the ladder of success. Really, how many people can fit on that top rung?? A frighteningly small number of positions that are wanted by a frighteningly large group of people. Clearly the higher one moves up the ladder, the more difficult it gets. Yet the messages constantly being communicated to us include “do whatever it takes to win”, “winners never quit” and “beat out the competition”. Those tips given above really add to a tremendous value for the climb, to move forward, move up and achieve those corporate goals. What the reward is really is own our choice.

Any climb to the top of the ladder of success has tremendous pressure. But the Dharma Climb of corporate success is worth all that pressure. Whatever little things we do in relation to Dharma are stored in the merit bank for the continuous climb to success in this live and future lives. It is is a smart climb.

The secret to success is do what we said, consistency, be discipline, work hard, trying non-stop even we’ve failed we we won’t give up easily.

Why make our boss look good because he’s the one always represent for the team member/company, if we make our boss look good, people will respect our boss too due to the attitude how we treat him. So they will see us as a team, if one of us fail equal the whole team fail. Since we can’t lead or dun have the ability lead the team, we be a good follower and give assistance/big support to our boss.

To gain respect with our fellow staff is work as a team with care always , never push our work to other finished , be responsibility, no bad mouth or step back each other behind, be generosity, no mind game, and be harmony to create a very good environment work as a tea.

  38. Carmen Koo on Dec 6, 2011 at 12:00 am

    Dear Rinpoche,

Thank you for posting this article up. It really does apply to all as most would have wanted to climb the corporate ladder at some point in their lives, and if not, everyone would’ve craved for success in their endeavours.

    Here are my views:

    1. What is the secret to success?
To me, success is subjective. What may seem “successful” to one, may not be considered success to someone else. But what overlaps in defining success is results. Achieving the result that you want, and fulfilling your goals is being successful at what you want and have to do. Therefore, the secret to success is to aim for something. Then once you have that aim of what you want to achieve, you do it well, be driven, extremely hardworking, be commited, be determined, do it all the way (see it through) and have integrity, so that the results that you want will come to fruition. If it doesn’t happen, then you will think outside the box, and do all that you can to make your aim a success. If it doesn’t meet your expectations, I still feel you have succeeded if you don’t give up – because by not giving up, there is no way you cannot achieve what you were made out to.

    2. Why make your boss look good?
You have to make your boss look good as your boss is the representation of the entire department, all the work that is done. If your boss fails, then the whole team fails, if your boss is doing well, then it lifts up the entire image of the department/brand/company, as the success of your boss reflects not only on the boss but the entire team. It is your boss who will most probably be the one that goes out to get the deals, get the jobs, represent the team, meet other people of power to close the business, be the first one that other people will deal with so if you make your boss look good, most likely it reflects the same of the staffs. It is all about teamwork; working with and around each other’s skills and qualities, to have the strongest team with a strong leader. If you cannot lead, you can play a role with what you are good in and assist the leader (boss), so that they can do the job better – then everyone will look good and garner the respect.

    3. How to gain respect with your fellow staff?
To gain respect with your fellow staff, I feel that you have to be responsible – do what you say and say what you do. Work wise, you deliver your work well, as promised, without needing to be reminded, nor without your fellow colleagues having to pick up your pieces. You don’t make your colleages worry about you or your work, or whether the team’s deadline can be met. Gain that trust, the respect will follow. That being said, though, if you do your work superbly it doesn’t mean that you have gained their respect, if you don’t act the part. If you are mean, always scolding others, putting others down, showing a black face, making it difficult for others to work with you, then even if your work is done perfectly you may not have gained their respect. I think it is a balance of having a down-to-earth/good-natured and adaptable character (i.e. be patient, caring, kind, forgiving, helpful, honest etc.) as well as having good work ethics – that would gain you utmost respect from both your staffs, colleagues and others around you.

Thank you Rinpoche, for letting me share my humble views with everyone.

    Much love,
    Carmen K.

I recall one time Rinpoche was up in KWPC for land blessing and he was giving a talk, it sounded kind of pushy then. But what I heard was get out of your comfort zone and always think I can do it. If we always think we can’t we never will. And never give up, giving up is a cop out at the end of the day.

  40. Karen C. on Dec 5, 2011 at 9:29 pm

Dear Rinpoche, thank you for this beneficial posting. I have not much working experience before i join Kechara, but i do have some observation and learning from the experience. Everyone wants to be successful and every individuals has their own ways to climb up the ladder.

To me, the secrets to success in both business and life are very simple: be responsible, love and care and have integrity. Responsibility and efficiency normally come in a package. This does not mean you working hard only but also your commitment and loyalty to your company. We should always think of productive ways to contribute in the betterment of our company. Do what we’ve promised and never break your promise is one of the methods of having integrity.

Making our boss look good is another key factor for us to help making the company we are working prosper. Reason being the boss is the representative of the company and we employees are hired to work under him/her to make the company grow and succeed. Do not try to steal the lime light from your boss. If only everyone can apply this in their principle: “If others out of jealousy treat me badly, with abuse, slander and so on, may i suffer the defeat and offer the victory to them.”

Create the love and care environment in work place. Care for others and listen to their problems and provide them solution if we can. When we are treated well and we should have the willingness to give back. Do a great job, first for you. Excel for you. Then assist others, speak up for others, do for others. Harmony is the key to happiness.

  41. Cynthia Ng on Dec 5, 2011 at 7:53 pm

Thank you Rinpoche for posting the article.

The secret of success is need to have a GOAL, well plan, action.

    1) We have to push ourselves up to maximum to finish whatever we have promise and just do it. Cooperation with team, to be firm and focus mind. We must face every challenge and accept it. Let things done on time and willing to help each others. No finger pointing to other team members when things go wrong or keep quiet when they make mistake.

    2) We have to make our boss look good because he/she is representative us. This can help us to achieve whatever we have to achieve in the plan that we set on time.

We have to respect each others, don’t speak bitingly. Create harmony to everyone.

  42. Paris on Dec 5, 2011 at 6:32 pm

Thank you for sharing this Rinpoche. So much of this very corporate article is exactly all that Rinpoche has already been telling us through Dharma teachings. It never ceases to amaze me how much successful Dharma practice is intertwined with successful living in all aspects of our lives.

    My thoughts:

I think the real secret to climbing that corporate ladder and finding success is in having a very clear focus outwards. The advice that Josh Goh gives here all point towards focusing out – networking, supporting people outside of ourselves (our team), looking outwards to a bigger picture and bigger goals so as to go beyond ourselves, get past our comfort zones and take on challenges. Even his advice about dressing like a leader is about focusing outwards. It is about dressing in a way that will appeal and attract the people we meet, give them confidence and inspire; it is not just dressing for ourselves, what we like to wear or what we are comfortable with. In all we do, we need to look towards our larger goals and to interact with others on a larger scale. We think big and achieve big. The higher you aim for, the higher you go!

We should always look our boss look good because when he looks good, WE look good! Also, unity and harmony in any organisation or team is important. Even if we don’t agree with things, we should still work to maintain harmony on the outside and show solidarity and support for our boss and teammates. This creates much stronger friendship and unity – key ingredients for any successful team. It makes our team and bosses have more faith in us, and outsiders (e.g. clients) also develop respect and faith for the organisation.

I really liked the advice on how to gain respect from staff / colleagues – it’s very much what Rinpoche has advised many of us across every department and in whatever we are working. Most important for gaining respect in anything we do is integrity, keeping our words and fulfilling what we promise to do. It isn’t just about the actual thing we promise but the act of keeping the promise – there are so many other positive effects that come from keeping a promise and so many negative repercussions if we don’t. When we keep a promise and fulfil what we say we will, it also implies we are hardworking (that we will do whatever it takes to fulfil our words of honour), that we respect the other person enough to honour what we say to them, that we are willing to make personal sacrifices to do what we say for others, that we are willing to take on more work so others don’t have to do more, that we care about the success of the company and team as a whole. It shows that we are reliable and that we and sincere and care about what we are doing.

Actually, this article summarises everything that Rinpoche is constantly teaching us and showing us in his own perfect example. We don’t need articles to tell us how – we just need to watch what our own Lama teaches us in his every action.

  43. Jay Jae on Dec 5, 2011 at 5:21 pm

like with anything that we want to do in life, we must have things well planned out in order for us to be able to harvest the fruits of our labor. We just can’t be doing the same thing all the time.

What we need is to set a view which runs long term for ourselves especially in relations to the people whom we love and support. Once set on a vision and a firm belief and passion (good mapping with knowledge and experience), we can set our minds to work hard without complain to achieve the goal.

Success breeds success and we can take success stories to be our inspiration. The more we want it, the harder we will work for it.

I agree in putting yourself into the shoes of your aspiring figure and u will tend to think about doing more like that person. For example: “If I was Buddha/Jesus/Steve Jobs, how would I have done it better/different?”

We cannot rule the world on our own, we need support and it is vital to think this way and work this way. We will fill in on our co-worker’s weaknesses and vice versa and make the group/company grow.

  44. lewkwanleng on Dec 5, 2011 at 3:56 pm

To me, key to success “ownership & responsibility”. If I own up to my decisions and actions, and be responsible for what I do, we can move the organisation ahead. At the same time, it is important to make my boss look good, because a good leader starts off as a good follower, and by making our boss look good, not only we do the job well, it gives confidence to our boss so that he/she can promote us to do more. And by walking the talk, we will gain respect from our fellow staff.

  45. Mc on Dec 5, 2011 at 3:31 pm

Good “success” doesn’t come at all cost, but should be the by-product of a good working dynamics between the Boss and the Staff. “Absolute Success” is hard to maintain as often there are factors beyond anyone’s control.

    For the Boss:
Have a strong vision. Communicate said vision to all levels of staff. Have a strong right hand person. Get the staff to buy into the “road map” and the KPI. Select the right people with the right skills, aptitude and attitude. Give empowerment and support to complete the tasks and don’t second-guess and undermine confidence. Leverage on the strengths and not weakness of each staff. Lead from the front and judge by results. Reward based on merit. Steer the ship and not be afraid to make tough decisions, always remember that you are dealing with livelihoods and not stats. Motivate and make the workplace fun.

    For the Staff:
Look for a long term career, not just a job. Make sure the Boss’s vision matches yours. If you don’t have a vision/ambition, develop one before embarking on anything else. Be open-minded and discard all you “previous experiences” – never try and force new opportunities into old experiences. Understand what results you need to produce, take complete ownership and judge yourself by the result before your boss does. Don’t be afraid to fail but communicate clearly the support you need. Always remember you are dealing with livelihoods and not stats. Be loyal.

Dearest Rinpoche, thank you for taking the time to post the article above.
To me, the secret to success is when one is able to deliver, respect others the way they want to be respected, patient, understanding and kind. I do not believe in being an a**hole to achieve the results, not caring about the consequences along the way to being successful.
Being able to help in ways that can push ourselves in return will also help our boss to move forward and upward. Having good teamwork not only make our boss look good but people will see that with good employees everything else will grow.
Treat/respect others as to how you want people to treat/respect you. To gain respect from anyone is to show them that we can deliver whatever we say or do and not just saying it and causing more problems.

  47. jeanai on Dec 5, 2011 at 1:16 pm

    Rinpoche,

The secret to success is taking responsibility for ourselves No one is responsible for our success apart from ourselves – it’s based on how much WE deliver, how much WE work, how well WE dress. It means the secret to success is in our own hands, and that’s quite empowering because it’s not luck.

The secret to our success is also taking responsibility for others. Our success is dependent on others in the sense we need to take care of them, and make them succeed as well. In doing so, we gain their respect and their support for our own success. When it’s not just about ourselves but everyone else as well, people will sense that and feel safe working with us. I think that’s when respect can be garnered, because they know we’re not out to exploit them.

How our subordinates or team would like to be treated is also how we’d like to be treated by our own boss. If the result of treating our team well is us looking good, it works upwards as well – if we make our boss look good, we’ll look good too. There’s a Chinese proverb that says something like when the ministers rise, the roosters and ducks will rise too…it’s not verbatim but I think it’s pretty accurate!

    Thank you,
    Jean Ai

  48. Yoke Fui on Dec 5, 2011 at 1:16 pm

The secret to success is first to have a goal, followed by steps /strategies to achieve this goal and constant check on measurable indications as to how near or far we are towards our goal. Perseverence/determination is the key ingredient to any success. I always remind myself Rinpoche’s teaching – ” Never say you can’t because that is not the real you”

Our boss/ leader has qualities that we don’t have now but aspire to acquire. If we follow through the vision and mission of our boss, we not only make our boss look good , we in effect are making the whole team look good. Harmony is a very important element in the success of any corporation or organisation and the BOSS is the ANCHOR of the whole Group.

Respect has to be earned not demanded. To earn respect, we need to set the example ourselves, put our words where our mouth is and most importantly true, heartfelt respect is gained through kindness not through harsh words or punishments.

  49. Julia Tan on Dec 5, 2011 at 12:49 pm

    Dear Rinpoche,

After so many years in the business, I’m not a successful one at all. I failed and missed many opportunities when i had very good resource around me. I failed because i was too focus on my own success but missed the essence of team work. Hence I’m working on my business now using what I learned from dharma, from Rinpoche’s teaching and also from all the liaisons in Kechara. I believe that the secrete to success is not about how much we know about it or how much capital we have to invest in it but PASSION and FAITH in what we are doing are the main key to success. By having these 2, comes along vision, planning, strategies, team work, care and etc etc..

It is very important to make our boss or head of department  look good as he or she is representing the company or the department or the whole organization. That means how the public or the outsider project about him or her directly affect the whole company or the organization. It’s our responsibility to promote and say good things about our boss in order to make our department, company or organization grow. As it grows we will be benefited too.

I believe to gain respect from our fellow staffs is be the one who never scared to loose, be the one to be there whenever they needed you. To guide and to care for them for their work and also to their personal lever. Be a good listener to find out what they need and what are their short coming. Cover each other’s short coming without taking any advantage of it. No do gossip and talking about others problem as an entertainment among others to gain lime light. By doing this we creeate politics and schism among all. And when this happened, we will lost everyone respect even their confidence in us.

Deliver could be one of the main factors to gain respect but without a good support deliver cannot be successful. Support comes from how strong you have build your team, the bond and the knowledge we have put in, including showing good example and correct conduct to our fellow staffs.

  50. Bryan Ho on Dec 5, 2011 at 12:14 pm

Thanks Rinpoche for posting this article.

For anyone to be success, we must push ourselves to face all difficulty or problems on job, when we overcome any problems that we face we actually learn something new, with the new knowledge we learned, it helps to face new challenge. Well plan for short, medium and long is also another key to success. If we only plan for tomorrow, we will not able to accept the any “surprise” in life/business. Everything is on our hands, we must grab any opportunity to do more, and do it well.

To make our boss look good and assist him in anyway he need. When we promote him to our clients, and sell him as a product, it will be easier when him meeting our client to close the deal. When since he is the leader of the organization, when he success, we all will success. If we are lack on the leadership, we should always assist someone who have to achieve the goal.

Trust your co-workers, give them chance to do new project, guide them and give good advices when needed along the way. Must encourage when they did good, or guide them when there’s problem occur. Set a good example for them to follow.

    thanks

  51. su an on Dec 5, 2011 at 12:06 pm

Dear Rinpoche, thank you for posting this. The concepts here are applicable to everyone whether they are working for others or themselves.

The secret to success is not really a secret anymore and everyone has their own secret recipe to success. To me the main ingredients would include sincerely wanting to succeed, putting into actions and adapting the plans developed to succeed, and to go through failure but not give up! Along the way, our success is dependent on others giving their help to our cause, hence we need to treat them with respect and care so that they are happy and able to do their best as well.

As followers, we also need to give our bosses all the support he/she needs. The boss is the leader and the face of the team. They must have persevered the hardships and whatnot to get to where they are today. If the followers antagonise the boss, it reflects badly on the whole team, nothing gets done well and no one benefits from whatever they were working on. I think this could be quite hard to do when dealing with a boss which we perceive as lazy/ temperamental/ bias/ greedy.. But I guess its up to the followers to find the good side of the boss and work on that. Otherwise why is he/her the boss and why did we sign the employment contract to work for and get salary from him/her?

Besides giving the boss respect and cooperation, we must also treat our team mates with respect, consideration, care and patience. Naturally, it will lead to us gaining respect from them. If we are sincere and consistent with this kind of attitude, even people who only observe us from afar will develop respect for us. Taking on more responsibility without complaining and without trumpeting about our achievements, and always having a cheerful demeanor no matter how tough the going gets will inspire fellow workmates. This is what I felt and aspire to do when I saw this attitude in my seniors and juniors.

  52. thierry janssens on Dec 5, 2011 at 11:59 am

Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this article on this blog.

I remember my ex-boss kept telling me that I should say nice things about him to my co-workers and promote him if I wanted support from my team. He said I would gain respect for myself in showing respect for my boss.
And indeed, if I had said nasty things about my boss to my team, how could they respect the hypocrisy, cowardice, divisiveness, sabotage and lack of integrity that I embodied in my speech?
After all if I really had bad things to say about my boss what was I still doing in the company?
Sometimes, it is easy to fall into the trap of putting oneself “higher” by putting others down, but that does not work, that’s why it is a trap.
To make my boss look good was spirit-lifting, respectful, constructive and honorable.

And when it came to my staff my boss also told me 2 things:

    1. do not disrespect out of your status in the office organization, they need you and you need them, show them support, give them guidance and direction, do not push onto them things that you don’t like to do because you simply can, do not set them up to fail, do not look down at them, promote them, acknowledge them.

    2. do not disrespect them by NOT pointing out their short-comings and mistakes, by not challenging them, by letting them slip and think it’s ok, by not showing that you are the boss when they need it, by allowing them to arrive late and think it’s ok. If you do not act as their boss, you are dis-respecting them too.

I also remember this part, I used to call it the OCD, though not the type we think of, OCD for:
    -Organise
    -Communicate
    -Deliver
And this applies to all levels, from the person in charge of a team of 50 people to the person in charge of just himself.

-Organizing allows for one to use his time most efficiently.
-Communicating allows for timing what we do with what others need in time, this participates to the whole’s efficiency and avoids to do redundant things and time wasting.
-Delivering is the aim that needs to be achieved or else the “O” and “C” have been just useless chatter.

So the success of an organisation comes from:
    -respect between its members,
-communication between the members (and outside),
-organization of the tasks to be done, time-planning, allocation of tasks to the right people,
-finish the job and deliver at all levels.

With all the above there is respect within the organisation and also respect from the outside, usually a good reputation follows.

    That’s what I learnt from my ex-boss.

    Dear Rinpoche,

Thank you for sharing this interesting & useful article.

To me , the secret to success regardless as a boss or co worker, must have good attitude, focus on the goal, good planning, passion and enthusism ,team work and integrity.

Boss is the main pillar of a company or an organization, as a co workers, respect the boss, giving boss the best support also the key to make our boss looks good. Especially working as a team, boss looks good means whole team gain the credits.

As a Successful good leader in order to gain respect, he or she must has integrity and always focus on the vision, do not confuse the co worker whenever instruction given, must be clear and firm, working towards the goal and plan.
When necessary, even boss has to get the hands dirty and involve the actual hands on tasks. Do not only talk and NO ACTION.
Humble, generous, high tolerant level and high EQ will make the boss gain respect too.

    Thank you

Being successful is not something hard to achieve. In fact, it is something we all can achieve if we work hard, have determination, have an altruistic mind and go all the way. Like how Rinpoche always tell us. All of us are capable to do so!

Another part of being successful is also to respect our colleagues! To gain respect, we have to first respect others especially our superiors. For our superiors to be in their position today, they must be good at what they are doing. hence we get to learn a lot from them. The further they climb up the corporate ladder, the more we can learn, more we can improve ourselves and move up the ranks ourselves as well.

As I’ve mentioned above, to gain respect we have to first respect others. We also have to be humble and always always think about others. Altruism is the way to go! We should always help out one another with no complains and hesitations. To gain respect, we also have to be good at what we do. By this, we have to always improve our skills and communicate!

I believe success in career or whatever I do is to be initiative and open to learning from others. I don’t know everything under the sun, everyone has their own specialty. After learning from others I believe teaching the knowledge to others, our juniors, and mentoring them. The knowledge I learn will be forgotten or outdated one day. What’s the point of using so much effort to acquire many knowledge for myself alone but not be of use to others. 🙂

  56. ngeowchin on Dec 5, 2011 at 10:18 am

The secret of success is to have the aspiration to go for it by mapping out one’s career plans, seizing whatever opportunities that comes , and not taking no for an answer even when faced with the most challenging obstacles.

If we make our boss look good , he will want us to be around him to ensure continued support from us. He wins , we all win.

We gain respect by doing more than others, by not being haughty , by showing results , by giving others encouragement and recognition , and space for them to perform through mutual trust.

  57. William on Dec 5, 2011 at 4:43 am

If climbing the corporate is your goal, then you have to work smart and not just hard.

The secret to success is that you must be good at what you do to begin with. You must have the knowledge or specialization which sets you apart from the rest. Having this knowledge is only part of it. The other part is to work on human skills and managing people to get you to the top. You must be able to manage your sub-ordinates so that they will work hard for you. Also, “manage” your boss so that he/she trusts you.

Everyone likes to feel good including your boss. If you make him feel good, then he will remember you. And you leave a good impression. He may have a few more people under him and you need to attract the attention. But do not go overboard to a point where he feels that you are “kissing his ass”. Get on his priority list and he will surely reward you when there is a promotion or a raise.

I also recommend that you to get your hands dirty at your staff’s work. Firstly, it will give you first hand knowledge and experience of how your staff is doing. And secondly, your staff will surely will respect you cos you are willing to go down to their “level”. Then you will have a support group in your job to help you grow in your career. Also always reward them accordingly.

And If you are dealing with your peers at work, definitely do not become over confident to a point where you become arrogant. Always strive to get the job done together and enjoy the reward together. It is never fun at the top if you are alone. Better to enjoy with a team of people who are with you at the top!

    Dear Rinpoche,

    Thank for the post.
The formula to success is to have goals and methods to work on it in order to achieve it in time line.

The method is very importance as it leads to result. Therefore if the method we choose are incorrect and we are failed but it doesn’t mean that we could not achieve it anymore as there is not only one method to make it success. As long as we work smart and hard, have strong motivation, mind open, responsible, corporation and not give up. The methods come from the motivation which is one thing that drive behind and lead us to goals either it to be success because of wanting money, fame, respect, to be accepted, family, love one etc..

So I feel that the mind is the secret to make it to success as mind control everything and mind that being trained can do things that can benefit lot of people and that mean a big success.

We must make our boss look good because boss is our team leader who represents us and how other will know about our boss is from our information and how we share and tell them as they will not have a chance to meet or to be closed until know our boss well in the beginning, so how people will admire, trust and respect or have bad impress in our boss is from us.

But in other hand if we want to make boss look good, we also must be a sample to represent boss correctly as people will simply judge the boss toward our attitudes and actions, otherwise it also contradict and create doubt in people mind.

In order to gain respect with my fellow staff :

    # be fair to everyone, no gossip behind, work as a team with harmony.

    # hand on or be there when they need help, give necessary advice, and listen on their opinions.

    # praise them when they do good things and be firm when they make mistakes.

    # encourage them in their strength and share about the weak points for their improvement.

    # when work success, give credit to staff but when work have problem always take responsibility to solve it, don’t just blame staff and put them down.

    Thanks

    Wan

This article is short and yet, it is very interesting, to me…

The Secret to success is having a far vision (huge goal) and work out plan to fulfill the smaller goal, which all these goals are in line to the far end goal.
    1. Having a firm and focus mind is very important because if we are not focus, most likely we will need to settle the unnecessary issues which consume a lot of time, effort, recourses, etc.
    2. Having a goal that is to bring benefit to ourselves and others. Reason is when the goal is only for ourselves, after going through one difficulty and another, at times, we will feel tired and to give up easily, but when we don’t work for ourselves, we will bear up the burden of others, while all these burden is up to our shoulder, we will then only be thinking of how to achieve the goals and not just focus on the difficulties that we are facing, because a great goal will make everything else become smaller and by then, the difficulties is already not so difficult anymore.

When we don’t want our boss to look bad, we will give in all we have to protect him, by doing so, it also help us to upgrade ourselves indirectly, because when we are helping our boss to go higher, we are also stepping up the ladders at the same time, and when we became the great help for our boss, he will also give us a hand to pull us up, so that we can help each other and to achieve a greater goal.

A person’s value is depends on how he carries himself, when we always give a helping hand to our colleague, be there when they are helpless are the first step to create a good relationship with our fellow colleague, doing our part of duty well and have integrity to fulfill our promises whenever we made, it will eventually create a strong and reliable pillar to them. When working near this pillar, they will also slowly adapt to this and later on become another pillar to other colleague, when everyone is helping each other to fulfill their goal, a harmonious work place will formed, and when working in this environment, we will achieve a greater goal together and everyone will feel good to it. Automatically, respect is gained.

Dearest Rinpoche… A very interesting yet simple article using common sense really! My comments below:

    1. The secret to success is sheer determination and hard work… but most of all a love for what we do because it comes hand in hand. We are most unlikely to have sheer determination and work hard at something if we did not love doing it to begin with.

    2. We need to make the person in the lead (or in some cases, our boss) look good because it is a reflection of ourselves. If we are constantly bad mouthing and worse still “back stabbing” our boss, what kind of picture does that paint?

    3. Respect is earned and eventually gained and that is through the examples we show while leading or working in a team whilst dealing with situations and others in a fair and logical manner. AND always give credit when credit is due!

    Thank you… Andrew

I’ve had my fair share of experience working in a multinational corporation, being exposed to a structure which emphasized team work towards a common goal. The lines between hierarchies were blurred to foster open (two-way) communication, harness talents and contributions through a sense of overall ownership towards the vision instead of towards a “boss.” Bosses are human beings and they will have good days and bad days. Thus, supporting our bosses and keeping the vision clear is important.

No matter what structure we find our working culture is like, knowing how to be successful in it is important. I appreciate this article and also the many people who have shared their opinions. Much thanks to Rinpoche for creating this opportunity to learn.

Effort is very important. Without effort, how do we even begin to improve, to acquire new skills, knowledge and all other good qualities essential for success?

I’ve just attended today’s Kechara Sunday Talk by Kevin Tan. The topic he shared with us was “Attitude is everything” There has been many key things Rinpoche has taught us to be successful, one of which is Attitude. If we have a “don’t care” attitude, even if we have talents, knowledge, skills and any other good qualities, we will not see our work flourish.

Making our bosses look good may come across as “playing politics” to get what we want.
But isn’t this fundamental of what we want at the end of the day?

    – If we have a boss who is exemplary and professional in work ethics, kind and caring towards the team, “making the boss look good” will only be the wisest thing to do as such a person will not come by easily. Achieving our common goals will be much quicker and the journey much more pleasant in working with such a boss.

    – If we have a boss who is unkind, ruthless, takes credit for what he doesn’t deserve, puts down others to look good.. ok the classic evil boss, then how?
As difficult as it is, I’d still do my best to make this boss look good. If we cultivate professional work ethics and kindness, even if an undeserving boss or sneaky team member looks good,..it doesn’t matter because :
    1. by doing our job well, we have gained and we take it with us no matter where we go and who we work with. People come and go, situation changes.
    2. Success and fulfilling visions doesn’t come from one person alone. Energy will be much worth while spent to make the boss look good than looking bad. What is there to gain when we make someone else look bad when we are connected to them.

In regards to our fellow team mates, being kind, reliable, trustworthy, and getting our hands dirty is a good place to start if we wish to gain their respect.

What an interesting post and I think it is a good guideline for people that is both Dharmic and worldly. It is interesting to note that people often equate being successful as only a worldly pursuit. I think this is not necessarily true because the most compassionate people on this earth are the most successful in enrolling others, benefitting others and organizing even more people to benefit more people.

Look at His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Mother Teresa, Reverend Cheng Yen of Taiwan and so many other great beings. They have people who run by these guidelines and more. The key to Dharma is not the method or the guideline but the motivation behind it. Hence, even the most worldly pursuit can be made into spiritual work.

    Dear Rinpoche,

Thank you for this article. The secret to success is to be focused on our goals and always check to see if our actions are in synch with our goals. Having milestones for our goals is also useful. We must be dedicated, versatile, embrace challenges and never be inert. Nurturing strong relationships with colleagues and business partners as well as dressing smartly will also help us to achieve success. Key to success is also never giving up! As soon as we give up, we have failed.

We should make our boss look good because if our boss looks good, he or she will be able to perform better and win respect from other people – internally and externally. Also, if our boss looks good, the employees also all look good. It is important to edify our boss and colleagues because by making them sound impressive, other people will look up to them and they will have more gravitas when they talk.

Gaining respect from our colleagues is via always keeping our word and delivering what we promise. That integrity makes people we work with trust us to fulfil what we promise so that they don’t have to chase us or worry that we will not deliver. When we do not deliver, because of interdependency, there is a multiplier effect and other people’s work is affected. Therefore, out of care for others, we must always do what we say so we do not burden others. That way respect is gained. When we go out of our way and help beyond our scope of work to support our colleagues so that our colleagues are successful, this also earns the respect and gratitude of our colleagues.

Also, always give credit where it’s due. When you acknowledge and promote each other’s successes, people will open their hearts and not worry that you will steal their thunder and be willing to work with you. However, if you take credit for other’s work, people will start to distance from you and soon nobody will want to work with you. Like the article says, there’s no need to praise ourselves but if we do a good job, others will recognise it.

Respect is gained when people sees us walk the talk. If the boss knuckles down and pulls his or her sleeves up together with the team, the harmony within the team will grow and people will see that the boss is one of the team and not above the team. I remember when I first saw Datuk May mopping the floor of the Gompa, immediately my respect for her went up! 🙂

    Thank you,

    With folded hands,
    sharon

    Dear Rinpoche,

Thank you for posting the above article. It’s very useful. Woud like to add on as follows:

Success is realised when I do the following:
    1) Get organised and be focussed with what I want to achieve in the short, medium and long term.
    2) Stay objective.
    3) Never talk down on my team mates.
    4) Create and maintain good relations with my team mates and other people that can help me achieve my goals.
    5) Dress smart.
    6) Be consistent and resilient.
    7) Never be contented with what’s achieved. Always strive for bigger results.
    8) Be humble.
    9) Be open to learning what’s new in my industry so that I can be ahead of the game.

It’s important to make my boss look good as well because when my boss becomes more successful, he’ll take me along to make him even more successful. It’s a win win partnership.

Team work is also very important for success. Earning the respect of our team mates requires integrity, delivering work on time that is free of mistakes, kindness and care.

    Regards,
    JP

What is the secret to success?
Very simple, work hard and deliver on time, no excuse, no complain just do it. While face problem or obstacle, seem as a good experiences make thing be better. never say give up!!!

Why make your boss look good?
Respect he or she always. whatever i do must think before action. Always remember the kindness they give me.

Make sure our job done and make sure we are honest what we had done. Complete our work without chasing by boss.

How to gain respect with your fellow staff?
Don’t talk bad each other. Always support each others, especially when one of them fall down. Cooperate, respect them, open-minded for other opinion.

I think if we really apply this three key points into our daily life, we will be successful in our career. And it also will help us have a successful relationship between our loved one, family, friend and all people around us.

  66. Lim Tat Ming on Dec 5, 2011 at 1:37 am

What is the secret to success?

The secret to success is to accept defeat and to offer the victory to others. No one wants to lose. Everyone wants to win. When we lose, others win. When others win, we win. How can we win by accepting defeat and offering victory? If we have the welfare of others in mind, eventually others will have our welfare in mind; others will give us the victory and accept defeat. This is in accordance with the Law of Cause and Effect.

    2. Why make your boss look good?

When our boss looks good, he becomes happy. When he is happy, he will take good care of his subordinates. Of course this is on the assumption that our boss is not selfish.

If our boss does not look good, then he will not be able to gain the trust of his bosses (i.e. the higher management). As a result, our boss may or will not be able to get the best allocation of projects in an organization. In the corporate world, the best performer gets to do the best job. When our boss looks good, he can secure better projects for his subordinates. Then if both the boss and his subordinates had performed well for the said projects, they will be well-rewarded by the management.

If our boss looks good, he will inspire the subordinates to emulate him. This motivates the subordinates to strive harder to become successful like their boss. This contributes to the personal development of the subordinates as well as the growth of the company.

No customer, supplier or management would want to deal with a boss who does not look good to them. Psychologically, when the boss looks good, it seems to imply that his subordinates are good too. This helps to establish a good working rapport between the customers and suppliers with the subordinates. When there is good working rapport, things can be accomplished easily.

If we make our boss look good, eventually we make ourselves look good.

    3. How to gain respect with your fellow staff?

    – Always think of others and wanting to benefit others
    – Be free from the Eight Worldly Concerns
    – Be sincere and honest
    – Honour our promises
    – Be respectful to others ( regardless of others’ race, age, financial status, experience, background etc)
    – Show a good example
    – Walk the talk
    – Be polite
    – Be kind and caring
    – Be generous

To be successful, one must has the “hunger, drive and committed” to see through the goals and visions..faithfully, loyally, harmoniously and progressively moving forward with passion, honesty, integrity, perseverance, courage and sacrifices.

Very importantly, it is the mindset that set oneself to be different and make the difference by taking the intiatives and accepting complete responsibilities of the results. It is the effort that a person put forth continuously in producing the outcome by transforming oneself through applications. Indirectly, by we embodying the qualities of our successful leader/boss and articulate the shared vision in a way that will inspires and enthuse others to follow suit will definitely reflect and make our boss look good.

Hence, respect will come forth without we asking for it.

  68. Wendyyyho on Dec 5, 2011 at 12:57 am

The secret to success is to have a goal that we passionately believe in and want to achieve. With that, everything we do will be geared towards that goal. We will be self motivated to do whatever it takes to achieve that goal and be able overcome all obstacles along the way because we are obsessed and focused on that goal that we want to achieve.

It is important to make our boss look good in the eyes of others so that people will have confidence in his capability of managing his work and people. People will see it as he is doing something right and would want to support him. In that way, it would be much easier for him to garner support for our organisation and lead it to success. If our boss is successful, it will inevitably benefit the organisation in terms moral, finances, reputation and support from others. Therefore, making our boss look good will make us part of a winning team that comes with all the benefits. A win-win situation.

It can’t be an overstatement to say that respect has to be earned. In work places, the number one way to lose the respect of our co-workers is to push our responsibilities onto others and take the easy way out. If we want others to respect us, never ever do that.
We must deliver our work without having to be pushed and reminded. When we make a mistake, admit it and take responsibility and provide a solution. In short, to gain respect of our fellow co-workers, we must be responsible in our work and be considerate to others.

  69. Kevin Tan on Dec 5, 2011 at 12:55 am

Climbing the corporate starts with not wanting to be a boss. It really starts with just doing the job in hand well every time. When offered more jobs, take it without complaining. When you work on the jobs given, you’ll gain experience and knowledge no one can take it away from you. With more experience and knowledge, you gain respect and confident from your colleagues , customers , stakeholders and bosses. Respect and confidence make you competent for larger job scope, thus, promotion. But having IQ is not enough, when you starts to work with others, you need good inter-personal skill, social skill, empathy, consideration and respect for others. In short, you need high EQ. But to lead others, IQ and EQ will not be sufficient. Manager manages things. Leader lead people. When you lead people, it is no longer just doing things right anymore. It is about doing the right thing. That will bring you to the area of spiritual quotient, SQ. A leader is not appraised according performance. Instead, a leader is appraised according to his wholesome initiative. Doing the right thing. On then, your staff and other stakeholders will accord you the title ‘Boss’. A good boss works for the staff. A good staff work with his/her boss. Do not be too engrossed climbing the corporate ladder too quickly. Spend more time making sure you have the ladder is up against the right wall first. A title in a company is invested by the company unto you. Whilst climbing up the ladder, do not forget people on the way up. Why? Well, you will get to meet the same people on your way down one day. Once back on the street, without your title, you are on equal ground to the prison next to you. No CEO, COO but Mr or Ms so and so. A successful person is one who still have many friends after the rat race is over. Not a lonely sod.

  70. patsy on Dec 5, 2011 at 12:51 am

Whether one is working in the corporate world or in a spiritual environment, the secret to success is to set a goal and work towards that goal. To quote Harriet Tubman “Every great dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience, and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world.”

Get out from the comfort zone, set up the plans and execute those plans and except challenges.

Take charge and be responsible and do not be laid back. Always have a good/right attitude. Speak up and speak well. To quote John Maxwell “The great leaders don’t get the people to come to them. They go to the people and give them a listening ear.”

Why do we want to make our boss look good? Logically speaking if he looks good then everyone in his team looks good too. How can we sell our “product” to others if our boss or company doesn’t have a good reputation? He is our leader and we respect his vision. That’s the reason why we stayed on the company. To work and support his vision.

Show respect to others and one will gain respect from others. Show leadership by example. Treat fellow staffs well, acknowledge and appreciate their work. Be honest and sincere and deliver what one promises. In return one will earn respect and trust from others.

  71. Nicholas on Dec 5, 2011 at 12:22 am

The secret to success is to start by having a GOAL. Next thing is the proper & detail PLANING & EXECUTION. From time to time we cross check the result and our GOALS. Fine tune could be needed as sometime unpredictable issue arises and necessary actions need to be taken.
Beside the above we do need to have certain qualities to support us to carried out the above work. Those are determination (never give up), honesty and a team player.

It’s important to make our boss look good. He/she leads the team and if he/she looks bad so to the team. The boss is the leader represents the team and eventually the whole organization. No matter how good a leader is the team also plays a vital role for the success as a whole. The team must support the boss to gain confidence from others to make the organization success.

To gain respect from our fellow staff is important for the success of the organization and also yourself. Personally to me if you respect a person when you work with him or for him you will co-operate fully or work with whole heartedly because you know this person deserve the best and you will learn and appreciate every single moment working with or for him. So in order for us to gain the respect we have to show a great example such as do what we say. Always encourage, support and protect our staffs. Praise them when they are good and guide them when they a wrong. Always treat them as a team where we move together and we fall together.

  72. abby on Dec 5, 2011 at 12:22 am

to me, to be success, we must step out from the comfort zone just like what Josh Goh said. By stepping out from our comfort zone, we could improve the good qualities in us and eliminate/improve the bad one. From this we could also cultivate some new good qualities in us. This is the best way to make ourselves grow!

Establish a good relationship with others is also very important, as we rely on the others no matter how. Always show our appreciation to others when they guide/help us in any ways. Always learn from others and listen to what they said, not just try to judge people. keep an open-minded is also very important.

Our boss are the person who teach us, guide us, and train us the most. No matter he/she uses a kind way or a nasty way to teach/guide/train us. If my boss looks good, it also means that im doing my part well and im a good employee, i never create problems to him/her. By doing this, people would respect my boss, thus they would respect me as well, regardless im just a small staff in the office or a staff with high positions.

Be sincere and humble, be tolerant and have a good temper are the keys to gain respect from others. I have a bad temper and it doesnt going to help me at all. Sometimes i want to get things done fastly(result oriented) by showing out my bad temper, even though i get the result that i want or expect, but i wouldn’t gain any respect from the others. The importance of the result is atcually equal with the process. Lastly, show respect to others is the key to gain respect from others.

Thank you for this very good sharing. Below is my comments:

    1) The secret to success is to have a clear goal, good planning, good image, team work and integrity.

    2) We have to make our boss looks good because the success of an organization depends very much on the success of the leader as the leader always represent the organization.

    3) In order to gain respect from our fellow staff, I think the most important thing is integrity, be a team player and always respect others and appreciate their work.

To be success in anything, we need to know our goal, be determined and not afraid to take the risks. Then we have to have a plan with actions and measurements that align to our goal, and of course a timeline. Results must always be matched with the measurements we set in ensure we are on the right path to success.

In a work place, usually we are working in a team where there will be a boss and co-workers. Our boss represents the team. By delivering quality job, our boss will look good, when our boss looks good, the whole team will gain the respect and credibility and thus looks good as well. Therefore, by making our boss looks good, we are actually making ourselves look good.

It is well said that respect is earned not demanded. To earn the respect from fellow staff, a leader has to provide the necessary guidance and assistance when needed. Do not just throw the tasks to the staff and leave them to their own devices. When things go wrong, as a leader take up the responsibility, do not point the finger, instead, work as a team to rectify the problem. Be a good listener to the staff, be caring but not controlling and of course deliver what is promised or committed.

  77. Phng Li Kim on Dec 4, 2011 at 10:09 pm

    Dear Rinpoche,
Thank you for this article. It is truly that simple. The key to harnessing power is to always be mindful not to abuse the power we have in our hands.

    1) The secret to success is hard work, logical thinking, consideration to consequences of our actions and decisions, follow through and completion. In short, honoring our words with actions and results. Although people commonly say, it is easier said than done, I would say then just do it. Why give ourselves such cliches and then just sit and do nothing with our lives. One more aspect to success is the willingness to be wrong and learn. Learning to succeed is as important as success in itself. How many people we have seen crumble after succeeding? Learning to succeed includes learning to maintain the success.

    2) If the Boss looks good, we look good. When we look good we get to keep our jobs. When we get to keep our jobs then do we still have the path to create success.

    3) Respect is definitely earned, even if by chance you step into position of power. Respect is earned by first giving respect to others. In any situation always create space for growth – inter personally and skills wise. People like and enjoy working with people who give them opportunity to grow, from this harnesses respect and more importantly loyalty.

    Much respect,

For my point of view Key to success is to work smart and hard, deliver your promises, think positive, not easy give up , observe and make wise decision.

To make our boss look good and support all the way is to accomplish ultimate success. If boss success also the key to own success too.

To be respected by fellow staff is honest, work in harmony, deliver work to be done on tme without push to others.

The secret to success is TO PLAN, EXECUTE AND DELIVER. Personally I operate from a simple model of reference of 5 steps which are:

    1) GOAL 2) PLAN 3) ACTIVITIES TO EXECUTE PLAN 4) RESULT CHECK 5) FINAL ASSESSMENT OF RESULT
In defining the above plan of actions to achieve my goal or goals I will ask questions with 5Ws (which are WHY, WHAT, WHERE, WHEN AND WHO) AND 2 Hs (which are how: the method and how much: the cost)

With the above in mind, I will constantly be conscious of being on track, accountable and deliver as my promise which is the GOAL. On completion of each and every goal completed, in the assessment of results, if SATISFACTORY, then ask what worked and if NOT SATISFACTORY, then what did not work. And most importantly learn my lessons from there.

It is the most important task to make the Boss look good because if he does, then he will be the image of the dept or company and in looking good, chances of success for the organization will be high. When the Boss succeed, he will create a bigger “pie” for everyone and everyone will benefit. When the Boss or Leader is well supported, he will have confidence to go forward in any direction without having to look back in fear of the carpet being pulled off his feet. This will definitely create success for all.

When you are able to deliver all the time, it is not necessary for fellow workers to respect you. As a matter of fact in real life, there may even be resentment against you. However, there will always be friends and foes in any environment, it is for you to establish care for every fellow worker. If you are able to deliver on time, then you should spend your excess time in assisting others to do their job and also be looking out for them not to fall. I believe that one alone in any organization will not represent success but that if one fails in the team, the whole team fails.

  80. KH Ng on Dec 4, 2011 at 8:37 pm

    Dear Rinpoche,

The secret to success is to have a vision that is not only for yourself but for the team as well; and if it also benefit many others then that vision is probably going to be successful. It must be a vision that others belief and is achievable. By vision, I also mean that it has to be something out of this world and not just something too easy. Then go for it and always motivating the team and others in believing in this vision. Basically the secret to success is to think of a worthwhile vision and act on it positively. Never give up. Just do it not matter what. Believe!

The reason why we should make our boss look good is that, he more than anybody else is the most important person in the team. He is the leader. He represent our vision and mission. Relatively, if he looks good then everybody else look good. If he doesn’t look good and somebody else eg I look good then there is disharmony on the outside already and most likely will cause disharmony on the inside. Then everything is in jeopardy. But it also depends on the boss. Good bosses never look bad! Never.Because they are respected and have creditability to withstand any negatives impacts.

Good bosses gain respect from fellow staff by having the above 2 points, ie, having the vision and having the belief and by acting on it . Failure doesn’t faze them. They just try again and again. All the while maintaining harmony and respect by earning it. They are the the leader but certainly not the “know it all” person. They are humble, fair, strict and firm. They listen to others and are focus and drives everyone forward. They make the decision and that the responsibility. They never blame others. Above all they have compassion and wisdom.

    1. The secret to success is to have short-term and long-term plans, deliver on time, take responsibility and accept challenges.
    2. We must make our boss look good because if we offer our loyalty and support, we will receive the same from him when he gets promoted. Also, we don’t bite the hand that feeds you.
    3. We gain respect from our fellow staff by being a good team member and meeting deadlines.

  82. Margaretlee on Dec 4, 2011 at 7:26 pm

The secret to success, in any work place is always to “Deliver” what you have promised or asked to do.

If you are the boss, other key ingredients to success is to always give credit to your staff, becasue without them, you also cant sail the boat alone. The credits is like an acknowledgement of the good and hard work your staff have put into it and people like to be acknowledged and appreciated, so they will give their best all the time. And I believe, one should always take good care of their subordinates and foster a family-like environment, afterall, people will give more when they know their welfare are also taken care of.

And if you are the employee, aother key ingredients to success is perhaps to be consistent in your work, this will sure win the boss’s trust and the chances of promotion will definitely be higher than others as you have earned the reputation of being realiable. All bosses love reliable employees.

Some workers may want to fight for the lime light with their boss, actually, if you are smart, let your boss take the lime light even though you may be the one behind the success of the project. As your boss gets more recognised, he would definitely need someone like you to consistently deliver the work from behind, so again chances of you taking a leadership role in the future will also be highly possible.

Working seems to be a big part in our life, whether it be a corporate/commercial context or in a spiritual environment. Respect is very important in any work place. And yet respect cannot be asked for except it can be given freely from others. In general, there are some DO’S and DON’TS you can gain respect by :

    1) Always be there for your fellow workers, willing to lend a helping hand when needed
    2) Be always humble
    3) Be a good listener and take people’s opinions into consideration
    4) Take good care of the people you are working with, give them a treat from time to time.
    5) Be direct and tell the truth
    6) Always give credits to people involved in the job and never take the credit alone
    7) Deliver what you have promised or asked to do and not to be reminded by others.
    8) Always praise others for their good qualities.
    9) Always be the one to promote harmony in the work place.
    10) Always speak nicely and politely to your fellow workers, never use any bad language

    1) Do not gossip from behind one and others
    2) Do not twist facts
    3) Do not put others down so you would look superior or better
    4) Do not dictate people what to do but always get a general consensus
    5) Do not point fingers at each other but take the lead to resolve any issues or problems objectively

Last but not the least, a sense of humour may go a long way too…..

  83. Henry ooi on Dec 4, 2011 at 7:04 pm

Success in building a career, getting a job promotion and a pay raise are in our own hands. We must have the yearn and drive fo be successful and not be laid back with a don’t care attitude. We got to have our own plans mapped out, short, middle and long term goals. Success ingredients are punctuality to work and meetings and in delivering deadlines. Progressive report to our boss is a must, do not wait until the task has ended. Be alert and efficient in the presence of our boss. These project enthusiasm and drive. Take initiative, speak up and give ideas. Keep to our promises. Do not give up on projects and our colleagues no matter how hard it may seem.

Importantly, integrity and good attitude is utmost.

Treat fellow co workers equal, be fair and show care, and have respect for them. Be a good listener to their problems, then offer advises and solutions. A good doctor listens then diagnoses. In return we earn their trust and respect. Steer clear from office politics and gossips. Reward our junior colleagues for their hard work but be firm to admonish when they erred.

We have to always make our boss look good especially to new, junior colleagues and clients. If we don’t “T-up” or sell our boss, clients would not be convinced when we make a sales pitch or when we introduce them. Our junior co workers may have more faith of our boss and the company when we do. Lead by example and the time will come when out junior colleagues will do the same for us. It is duplication.
Be honest and faithful to our boss and the company. Own up and apologize when we make a mistake and make a concerted effort not to repeat.
Do not talk bad of our boss, it is akin to slandering our parents. Listeners often wonder why are we still in the company when we are unhappy?

    Dear Rinpoche,

After being a corporate-animal for almost 20 years, this article still rings true to me!!

The secret to success is to work smart and stand up to be counted!

My ex-boss always tell me he doesnt measure his staff’s performance by the hours they clock in but by the results that they deliver! And to be successful working in multi-national companies is to make our bosses look good, after all we are there to support his/her work.

To be respected by fellow colleagues, we need to walk our talk and be honest. Most importantly, in my opinion, is to NOT claim credit when you didnt work on it!

In doing dharma work, the above ‘rules’ still apply and if all of us treat dharma like a corporate career (with passion and dedication, of course), our work will definitely flourish!

    With folded hands
    Siong Woan

Very interesting and informative article. In most cultures, women is consider as lower in status compared with men. Ancient times in India, man took the lead while women is seconded. But times has changed for the better where women are not degraded in society. They receive equal recognition, appreciation, and stature, yet in countries and places around the world, women are still viewed as inferior and treated accordingly. But in Buddhism women have been increasing in number and has proven that many of them have gained full enlightenment in a female body. In Buddhism is concerned there’s no discrimination toward women ,both men and women are equal. There‘s many female Mahasiddhas and Yoginis as in this blog. May it inspired many more to come. Interesting article and its great sharing knowledge.

Sleep paralysis is a feeling of being conscious but unable to move. It occurs when a person passes between stages of wakefulness and sleep. During these transitions, one may be unable to move or speak for a few seconds up to a few minutes. Some people may also feel pressure or a sense of choking. Sleep paralysis is a temporary inability to move or speak. It’s not harmful and should pass quickly, but at times can be frightening. It can affect anyone but is most common in young adults and they might have hallucination. The scary facts about sleep paralysis is those who suffer from it have said it felt like someone was choking them on their chest so they could not breathe.
As for me I have not experience as such before as least i know now what i can to do.
Thank you Vinnie Tan for sharing. Interesting read of these stories related to sleep paralysis.

nteresting as this texts been composed after being inspired to do so . That’s interesting as this nature are traditionally considered exceptionally potent in their blessings if the claim of divine inspiration is authentic. According to the account in the introduction, the author composed this text after being divinely inspired to do so. It’s a very rare kind and its acceptance been recognised and received praise by very high lamas of our tradition. Reading this article tell us all of how powerful Dorje Shugden when we invoke in our prayers.
Interesting read of the short biography of Ven. Geshe Kunchok Gyaltsen, the author of Mass of Vajra Fire.

That’s wonderful Rinpoche has composed prayers in English so as everyone could recite and practice. For beginners is such a meaningful insights and perspectives without commitments and initiation. Moreover each prayers is for a specific blessing that helps practitioners to gain attainments and overcome obstacles. Easy and simple for everyone to start off.
We are fortunate that everything Rinpoche did brought tremendous benefit to all sentient beings. Whatever prayers Rinpoche has composed are especially potent with blessings.

A great article , revisit this again of Tibetan Lamas and their dogs. As now I have a pet doggie with me, I came to understand more of them . Dogs are the most amazing creatures, they give us unconditional love. For me, they are the role model for being alive. Buddhists believe dogs also have the potential to become enlightened and can teach us about responsibility, love, and other Buddhist principles. The Q & A by Sandra Klein’s interview with the Venerable Gonsar Rinpoche gave us a better understanding and very informative of Tibetan dogs under Lamas care. ccording to the Buddha Dharma, all sentient beings have Buddha nature — from ants to humans. Though we often look at dogs as wonderful companions an teach us to embrace Buddhist principles. They, themselves, embody many of these principles.
Thank you Rinpoche for this great sharing.

Living with my wife, whose world is meticulously painted with the hues of OCD, is a journey that intertwines the essence of love with the complexities of the human mind. Her relentless pursuit of cleanliness and order, transforming even the most negligible corner into a testament of organization, often dances on the fine line between admiration and frustration. The sight of her steering clear from trash bins as if they were labyrinths of chaos, serves as a poignant reminder of the battles she fights within. Yet, it’s through these very battles that I’ve learned the profound language of patience and the unspoken strength of support. Therapy, in its gentle embrace, has been a beacon of light for her, guiding her through the stormy seas of OCD. It has not only offered her solace but has also unveiled the strength of her spirit, teaching us both the beauty of resilience. As she journeys through the pathways of healing, I stand by her, a testament to the power of love and the enduring promise of hope. Together, we navigate the complexities of her world, discovering that within the challenges lie opportunities for growth, understanding, and an unbreakable bond. https://www.mindfullyaliveonline.com/obsessive-compulsive-disorder-ocd/

Venerable Ajahn Chah was a Thai Buddhist teacher of the Buddhadhamma and a founder of two major monasteries in the Thai Forest Tradition. Well respected and loved as a man of great wisdom, he was also instrumental in establishing Theravada Buddhism in the West. Interesting life story, how he chose to leave the settled monastic life and became a wandering ascetic. Walking across Thailand, lived in forests, caves and cremation grounds while learning from the meditation monks of the Forest of various monasteries. He wandered through the countryside in quest of quiet and secluded places for developing meditation. He even lived in tiger and cobra infested jungles, using reflections on death to penetrate to the true meaning of life. After years of wandering, Venerable Ajahn Chah established a monastery where he taught simple, practice-based form of meditation, and attracted a numerous of students including western foreigners. He was one of the greatest Dhamma teachers of the modern era. His wise teachings have continued to guide thousands of people along the path of Dharma. Venerable Ajahn Chah’s teachings of the Thai Forest Tradition gradually spread across all over the world. Several of Ajahn Chah’s Western students have since established monasteries throughout the world. Just in Thailand itself, there are more than 300 branch monasteries in Ajahn Chah’s tradition. Ven erable Ajahn Chah used his ill health as a teaching point, emphasizing that it was a living example of the impermanence of all things and reminded people to endeavour to find a true refuge within themselves. The legacy of Venerable Ajahn Chah’s teachings and legacy continues into the modern age.

Wonderful blog written on the practice of Kalarupa for us to understand better. As an emanation of Manjushri, Kalarupa’s practice helps us to destroy ignorance and to develop wisdom overcoming our anger and suffering . Awesome Kalarupa manifested in multiple forms to help sentient beings who personifies enlightenment by the conquest of anger. Kalarupa also regard as one of the three main Dharma protectors of the Gelugpa is extremely fierce and ugly, and tames all kinds of spiritual ugliness. The fierceness of his iconography teaches us to remind ourselves that all the causes and effects of anger arising from ignorance are dreadful and distorted.

Nepal is a very spiritual country, having a huge Dorje Shugden mural in Kathmandu, is indeed a big achievement for Kechara. Located on Charkhal Road in Dilli Bazaar, the mural can be found midway between our two Dorje Shugden chapels which are in Putalisadak and Chabahil. It is also very close to one of Kathmandu’s largest shopping malls. Many locals , tourist will be able to connect them to a powerful deity that is so closely associated with their culture. Well the mural not only beautiful but also full of symbolism and everyone merely by seeing it is blessed. Thanks to those talented artists and generous sponsors making it a success.

All the art of living lies in a fine mingling of letting go and holding on. Letting go helps us to live in a more peaceful state of mind and helps restore our balance. A reminder for us all to go of attachment and meditating on impermanence and emptiness. We are to relinquish the domination of our ego and its habits to transform ourselves. A great reminder not to waste our previous life.

We are members of the Buddhist Temple in Taman Desa Jaya, Kepong, Kuala Lumpur and we have been issued membership by the president (DATUK YIP KUM FOOK), we are very sad because we are the foundation of this Temple

Now we can know who is always messing with people, and he always cheats money and women, he even uses Buddhism to find money.

Also, need to be careful with his brother-in-law (Simon Low Kok Meng) because he is a spy (CID) for DATUK YIP KUM FOOK and we will write some letters to AGONG SULTAN IBRAHIM IBN ALMARHUM SULTAN ISKANDAR as soon as possible.

The matriarchal cultures of the grandmothers have specific symbolism of animism shamanism, such as the horse, especially the blue horse, and the deer. These are two main symbols of a shaman woman and you can find them in many cultural folk lore, especially the Russian, Slavic, Siberian, Nordic, Finland, and Norway. It’s nice to see the Matriarchal Shaman Animism diety represented in Chinese.

An inspiring act of a selfless Lama feeding strays whether its night or day. Truly an example for us all to feed those lonely strays . Yes I do agree compassion starts with feeding strays. Reading this blog again to refresh myself to do more. Strays animals generally lead a life of poor welfare on the street. Feeding strays is a compassionate act.

The Unknown

The Known and unknown are both feared,
Known is being comfortable and stagnant,
The unknown may be growth and opportunities,
One shall never know if one fears the unknown more than the known.
Who says the unknown would be worse than the known?
But then again, the unknown is sometimes worse than the known. In the end nothing is known unless we endeavour,
So go pursue all the way with the unknown,
because all unknown with familiarity becomes the known.

What the meat industry figured out is that you don't need healthy animals to make a profit.
Sick animals are more profitable... farms calculate how close to death they can keep animals without killing them. That's the business model. How quickly they can be made to grow, how tightly they can be packed, how much or how little can they eat, how sick they can get without dying... We live in a world in which it's conventional to treat an animal like a block of wood. ~ Jonathan Safran Foer

One the day of Losar (new lunar year), it is always beneficial for Buddhist practitioners to get together in making abundant offerings to Buddhas on the altar to usher in goodness, prosperity and well-being of our loved ones. It's more auspicious this year as Losar and the Chinese New Year begin on the same date, 10th Feb, 2024. Back in Penang, our Kechara members came together to decorate the altar with abundance offerings for Dorje Shugden puja @3pm. Kechara Penang Study Group by Jacinta.

Umze for the day was Siew Hong. She's just been with us for slightly more than a year now but she's proven her capability in leading the puja. Our Penang group members are so proud of her and her commitment in attending the weekly puja. Despite being eloquence and smart, she has beautiful chant as well. When she leads, make sure you are there to hear her chant for yourself! Kechara Penang Study Group by Jacinta.

Dharma sharing by Hue before we proceeded with DS puja & Rinpoche Swift Return puja. Hue is one of the long time Kechara Penang members and he comes to puja regularly. He shared that he truly believes that Dorje Shugden and Rinpoche always there guiding him. He shared how sometimes DS will give him hints to avert troubles ahead or to alert him when he 'misbehaved'. Hope many will come to know more about this powerful Dharma Protector, Dorje Shugden aka DS. Having Dorje Shugden is like having a powerful ally that will protect us day and night. Just trust Him and have faith. Kechara Penang Study Group, 25/11/2023 by Jacinta.
